Lawrence Of Arabia Revisited

Back a long time ago I went to the movies and saw Lawrence Of Arabia….I was already interested in history but this made the desire to learn more that much more intense.

After university I went to work in the Middle East and found that there was not an Arab alive that saw his person in a heroic light……if anything, to them, he was a coward and a liar two things that Arabs hate…..after learning more about Lawrence I cannot watch the movie without feeling some sort kinship with the Arabs……

Now as in then, it’s not that the West wants to save the Middle East – it’s that the West wants the Middle East.

How About A “New Narrative”?

Ya think?

Since the beginning of this thing we are having confronting ISIS I have said that their, the government, response has been knee jerk at best….that there seems to be very little new being applied to a new battlefield….and the government has struggled to find a way to explain it to the adoring public without giving away strategic info…….

With all the criticism the admin boyz have been tapping dancing at a feverish pitch…..now it appears that these people have finally figured out that their words and explanations have been anything but clear and simple…..and now they havew decided that it is time for a “new narrative”……

According to Pentagon officials, they are feverishly at work on a “new narrative” for public discussion about the ongoing war against ISIS, centering on growing criticism of the apparent lack of a concrete plan for how to win the war or any end-game theory.

“To say there’s no strategy is just flat out wrong,” insisted Army Col. Christopher Graves, the public affairs officer for the war, and others say the goal is to present the notion that there is a strategy in place in a “concise, easy to understand way.”

The official narrative on the war has struggled mightily to find its voice so far, in no small part because officials have repeatedly ruled out things like combat troops and “boots on the ground” before announcing deployments into Iraq, and a lot of revision of what was really promised leading President Obama to eventually insist it was only a pledge for no battalions.

It remains to be seen exactly how the Pentagon aims to shift the narrative this time, but conspicuously absent from early conversation on this “new” narrative is laying out exactly what that nebulous strategy to win the war actually is.

And despite Pentagon assurances that they “welcome debate” on the strategy, that’s the one thing that’s least likely to happen, as the administration has so far seemed to base the public narrative of the war on a series of vague pledges to eventually wipe out ISIS in some unspecified way with some unspecified force, all the while escalating in ways that publicly they had insisted were ruled out. There are doubtless more escalations in the cards for the ISIS war, and the Pentagon goal is not to start a debate about that, but rather to convince the public to acquiesce.

Do you buy any of this?  Damn you guys are easy!

If you have a problem with the “end game theory” let me know and we can discuss it……

This is nothing but a ploy to shut down the criticism and give them time to do an end run on the public…..

Better Late Than Never!

You know whenever conservs talk about Jimmy Carter it always a mention of a wimp or worse and it always comes back to the Iranian hostages and the failed rescue attempt……it always the fault of him being a ….wait for it…..a liberal.

Speaking of the hostages….I read a report during the Christmas break about these people……

Survivors of the Iranian hostage crisis will be awarded up to $4.4 million each, more than three decades after their 444 days in captivity. The terms are laid out in a spending bill President Obama signed into law last week, which also includes reparation for victims of other terrorist attacks, including the 1998 US Embassy bombings in East Africa, reports the New York Times. The 1981 agreement that secured the release of those taken hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran on Nov. 4, 1979, barred them from seeking amends. Legal appeals were later blocked, though renewed pleas for compensation followed the release of 2012’s Argo. Finally, when bank BNP Paribas was forced to pay $9 billion for violating sanctions against Iran, Sudan, and Cuba, this year, Congress moved to set aside $1 billion for terrorism victims.

The 37 surviving hostages will receive up to $10,000 per day of captivity, while spouses and children can receive a lump sum of up to $600,000, per the Times. The money should be awarded within a year. “The money can’t bring back family members, or the 444 days of their lives. But it would bring some closure and some justice,” Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson tells the Telegraph. “I had to pull over to the side of the road, and I basically cried,” a former embassy security guard says of hearing the news, noting it took “36 years, one month, 14 days” for Iran to be held accountable. “I don’t believe that they will ever, ever apologize,” he adds. “They don’t believe that they did anything wrong.” Officials note many of the hostages were tortured and continue to suffer, including from PTSD. The law signed Friday also designates $2.8 billion for victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families.

After I read this I had a thought…..what can we expect from a country that treats its veterans so shabbily or the treatment that the 9/11 first respondents have had to endure…..why would the Iranian hostages get some sort of expedient justice?

Nothing says love or thank you like being screwed for 35 years.  But hey…that is just what we do when people out use their usefulness.

I am sick and tired of our politicians trying to appear to care…they do NOT and NEVER have!  And I am beginning to think badly of the American people as well……

The Season of Peace And Joy

We are in the middle of what some people call “the season of peace and joy”…..the problem is that for most it is only a fleeting concept…..for they want to feel something and they cannot…..

It’s the time of year when people sing about peace and goodwill. Unfortunately in the United States, too little thought accompanies the nice words. Otherwise Americans would be in the streets demanding that President Obama shut down the war machine. They would also be repudiating every presidential candidate who endorses the fundamentals of America’s criminal […]

Yep…..I am a peace-nik (a slur from the 60-70’s)…..after experiencing the obscenity of war how can one be anything but?

A Memory Shared: Aleppo

In my younger years I was fortunate enough to work in the Middle East……first in Tunisia then on to Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and finally in Syria……I made some very good friends in my time in Syria, the city of Halab (Aleppo to Westerners)……..the city was beautiful and full of history and culture……

Now with the civil war it is painful to see what has become of a once beautiful and serene city……..

Aleppo will never return to its beauty and historical significance….that is truly sad and just a bit depressing…..

But I guess you would have to had been there to appreciate the beauty……

If You Want To Be Happy For The Rest Of Your Life

A big question for philosophers has been what is “Happiness”……what should a person do to achieve total happiness?

I have said for many years that the American public is too consumed with the material world…..that the possession of “stuff” does not bring one the happiness that we all seek…..

Is it possible that I may have been mistaken?

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life……then….GO SHOPPING!

There really is something to retail therapy: A new study in Social Psychological and Personality Science finds material purchases bring a person longer-lasting happiness than experiential purchases, like concert tickets or a trip to the zoo. In other words, whoever said money can’t buy happiness was lying, reports Complex. Researchers at the University of British Columbia set out to gauge how happy a material purchase—be it a sweater or a coffee maker—made a person feel in the weeks after they got the item home. After asking shoppers to record how they felt about an item up to five times per day, researchers found material purchases delivered repeated bursts of happiness for weeks, while experiential purchases brought only a brief dose of pleasure.

The happiness that came from a visit to the spa, a sporting event, or a weekend getaway was more intense, though, and people tended to view such purchases more favorably when asked their thoughts about six weeks after Christmas. “The decision of whether to buy a material thing or a life experience may therefore boil down to what kind of happiness one desires,” a researcher explains in a release. He breaks the study down like this: “Consider a holiday shopper deciding between tickets to a concert or a new couch in the living room. The concert will provide an intense thrill for one spectacular night, but then it will end,” he says. “In contrast, the new couch will never provide a thrilling moment to match the concert, but will keep the owner snug and comfortable each day throughout the winter months.”

Shopping?  Really?

Of all my “stuff” there is only one thing that I could not live without…..my books!

Sad…..I am so glad that I was taught better……I get little joy out of shopping….I live on a fixed income so any frivolous spending makes life a wee bit harder….at least for me….besides what is the old saying…”You cannot take it with you”……

10th Anniversary

Did everyone have a great day yesterday?

The day after…I do hope that everyone had a pleasant and happy Christmas…..I apologize for my laziness during this last week or so….I have been up to my butt in prep work for teaching and of course the prep work for the big day….I do hope that all will understand the absence at times…..thank you.

A decade ago my life changed….a change that would have a lasting effect on my life as I go forward…….

Ten years ago today I fell from a ladder while working in a house damaged by Hurricane Katrina…..the fall broke my right leg in 5 places and my right hand (concrete is extremely hard)……after 2 operations and lots of rehab I had to retire….that was the hardest part of the accident…..learning to deal with a bum leg and retirement.

I did what many people do….I started feeling sorry for myself and playing with depression….you see I began to believe that my usefulness was at an end…..the more I thought about it the deeper I sank into depression and self-pity…..

After about a year I thought my days of writing political commentary were over…I was never a big computer user….that is until I discovered blogging.  That was perfect for my mental rehab and my source of commentary….

I thought that I was going to just sit and wait for the days to click by until my dirt nap….blogging gave me an outlet and a new outlook on retirement….and as they say….”the rest is history”……

It is Saturday and one of my days that I post on anything but the daily news…..so go out and enjoy the rest of your days off and Monday will begin again…..

Merry Christmas–2015

merry christmas 4

Or if you prefer…….which I never understood the silliness wrapped around this…….

The day of days that every kid alive has waited on all year…..is finally here and their wishes and hopes can be a miracle…..

candles and nuts at christmas

This will be my only post today for the most obvious of reasons….I want to spend the day with my granddaughter and my lady love, daughter and son-in-law…..we will be dining on turkey, my fabulous dressing, peas, yams, green bean casserole (my daughter’s fave) cranberry sauce and french bread and a lovely Spanish Rose wine…..and my daughter’s creme brule, it is to die for……

I would like to thank everyone for their continuing support of IST and I sincerely wish that everyone has a joyous day and all your wishes come true….you guys have helped make this a great year for this little blog…..I truly appreciate it.

I will return tomorrow and we can start up again…..until then….have a day, my friends.

A little humor before I go……this is the dumbest argument since paper or plastic……..

This Man Knows Everything He Needs To Know About Muslims

I read this piece and just had to post it here on IST……there has been so much said about Muslims and their religion and this piece is excellent…..I will not post a link because it will spoil the post…..I hope the author will forgive me for posting the whole thing……(I will explain my reasoning later)……

SALINA, KS—Local man Scott Gentries told reporters Wednesday that his deliberately limited grasp of Islamic history and culture was still more than sufficient to shape his views of the entire Muslim world.

Gentries, 48, said he had absolutely no interest in exposing himself to further knowledge of Islamic civilization or putting his sweeping opinions into a broader context of any kind, and confirmed he was “perfectly happy” to make a handful of emotionally charged words the basis of his mistrust toward all members of the world’s second-largest religion.

“I learned all that really matters about the Muslim faith on 9/11,” Gentries said in reference to the terrorist attacks on the United States undertaken by 19 of Islam’s approximately 1.6 billion practitioners. “What more do I need to know to stigmatize Muslims everywhere as inherently violent radicals?”

“And now they want to build a mosque at Ground Zero,” continued Gentries, eliminating any distinction between the 9/11 hijackers and Muslims in general. “No, I won’t examine the accuracy of that statement, but yes, I will allow myself to be outraged by it and use it as evidence of these people’s universal callousness toward Americans who lost loved ones when the Twin Towers fell.”

“Even though I am not one of those people,” he added.

When told that the proposed “Ground Zero mosque” is actually a community center two blocks north of the site that would include, in addition to a public prayer space, a 500-seat auditorium, a restaurant, and athletic facilities, Gentries shook his head and said, “I know all I’m going to let myself know.”

Gentries explained that it “didn’t take long” to find out as much about the tenets of Islam as he needed to. He said he knew Muslims stoned their women for committing adultery, trained for terrorist attacks at fundamentalist madrassas, and believed in jihad, which Gentries described as the thing they used to justify killing infidels.

“All Muslims are at war with America, and I will resist any attempt to challenge that assertion with potentially illuminating facts,” said Gentries, who threatened to leave the room if presented with the number of Muslims who live peacefully in the United States, serve in the country’s armed forces, or were victims themselves of the 9/11 attacks. “Period.”

“If you don’t believe me, wait until they put your wife in a burka,” Gentries continued in reference to the face-and-body-covering worn by a small minority of Muslim women and banned in the universities of Turkey, Tunisia, and Syria. “Or worse, a rape camp. That’s right: For reasons I am content being totally unable to articulate, I am choosing to associate Muslims with rape camps.”

Over the past decade, Gentries said he has taken pains to avoid personal interactions or media that might have the potential to compromise his point of view. He told reporters that the closest he had come to confronting a contrary standpoint was tuning in to the first few seconds of an interview with a moderate Muslim cleric before hastily turning off the television.

“I almost gave in and listened to that guy defend Islam with words I didn’t want to hear,” Gentries said. “But then I remembered how much easier it is to live in a world of black-and-white in which I can assign the label of ‘other’ to someone and use him as a vessel for all my fears and insecurities.”

Added Gentries, “That really put things back into perspective.”

I know I have some more Right wing readers and they will be pleased that I posted such a piece……and after they read it I will let them know what this is all about…..and I pray that the author will understand why I broke protocol and posted the entire piece……

The Islam No One Knows

There is much suspicion surrounding Muslims worldwide….mostly because groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS have sucked all the air out of the religion leading people to believe that that is all there is to Islam….not so……

In an apartment in Amman, Jordan, three men sit with a man named Mohammed. Their goal: convince the 20-year-old Syrian not to join an armed jihadist group. Later, after Mohammed agreed to hold off for at least 40 days, one of the men declared victory. “Once they open their hearts and join us,” he says, “they never go back.” The men are adherents to Dawah, an Islamic movement that may have up to 50 million followers worldwide—and a reported 50,000 in the US, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Rooted in a 1921 Islamic revival in northwest India, Dawah calls on followers to convey the virtue of “loving thy fellow Muslims and non-Muslims.” Now proselytizing in more than 200 countries, Dawah members give a short talk, offer a blessing, and ask people to join them at a mosque for a prayer and lecture.

Dawah is an apolitical movement that its leaders call nonviolent; followers don’t debate their beliefs or broadcast them via social media. Critics, however, say Dawah’s adherence to conservative practices (like segregating men and women in public and requiring women to cover themselves) make it a possible gateway to extremism. Indeed, shoe bomber Richard Reid followed Dawah and John Walker Lindh, who joined the Taliban, apparently went to Dawah events in the US. Still, former CIA analyst Graham Fuller says the movement should be welcomed as a nonviolent alternative to extremist groups. “If some people say, ‘Look, we don’t want Dawah here at all,’ then they are not living in the real world,” he says. “[Dawah] is speaking to a very basic need to express one’s faith beyond prayer.”

I know this is not what some people want to hear and will ignore any positive aspects of a religion they do not like…..

All I do is try to help in the understanding…..not convert.  I dislike it when religion is used to fuel the dislike of a people…..
