In my younger years I was fortunate enough to work in the Middle East……first in Tunisia then on to Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and finally in Syria……I made some very good friends in my time in Syria, the city of Halab (Aleppo to Westerners)……..the city was beautiful and full of history and culture……
Now with the civil war it is painful to see what has become of a once beautiful and serene city……..
Aleppo will never return to its beauty and historical significance….that is truly sad and just a bit depressing…..
But I guess you would have to had been there to appreciate the beauty……
Ah! “History and Culture!” Here’s “History and Culture” for you: Jesus proclaiming to an audience while predicting the future for the unbelievers said that not one stone of any known city on earth would be standing one upon the other before the end of Time comes.
It is a shame — a pity — sad that “History and Culture” must be consigned to the dust and to memory but that is the way it is with civilizations and savageries and since it in inevitable why worry?
I am guessing that within a few short years the same lament will be legitimately made over what was once the beauty of Sweden and much of Europe before the great migrations of “Refugees” began.
I doubt it….

I have to share your sadness; one needn’t have been there to see the contrast between the photos from your time there, and those showing some of the destruction….
And, Pennie is right, about what I’d say…. In at least one sense; a big part of the problem/issue IS the “stewpidity” of the average person, because, no matter which culture around the world they are from, their ignorance makes them easy targets for manipulation by those with no principles…
Humanity’s existence, in every field or view you can name, can be shown accurately on a bell curve (sorry, math does exist, and is relevant…).
If one considers where on the curve the average person can be found, we find that there are MORE than 4 BILLION people who have very little chance to ever control their own lives, because they do not have the capability to understand enough of themselves, or the world around them, to be able to discriminate between the lies and the illusions with which they are confronted every minute of every day….
Thus, they become putty in the hands of those who make and spread those illusions, in order to pursue their personal agendas, none of which have anything to do with anything other than their own benefit….
And, the circus goes on….. but, it isn’t funny any more…
