Closing Thought–09Oct20

We all have heard the scary news that the president of the United States had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus and had to spend a few days under medical care at Walter Reed.

And there has been a wealth of speculation as to where he may have contracted the virus….was it from the presser in the Rose Garden…perhaps the rallies that he has and refuses to mask up…..just where could our Dear Leader have contracted this illness?

Not to worry.

As usual the president has someone he can blame to avoid him from admitting that he is a moron.

He is now saying that it could have come from a Gold Star Family……

President Donald Trump on Thursday after the commander in chief suggested that he might have contracted Covid-19 from Gold Star family members who were too close to him when telling stories of their loved ones who died in the line of duty.

Democrats said Trump’s comments, made in an interview with Fox Business Thursday morning, disrespected military families and shifted blame for his administration’s shortcomings on the coronavirus.

“Whether he intended it or not, the President has blamed an event with families who lost their loved ones in battle for giving him COVID. That is a shocking statement even for this President,” Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. “He must immediately apologize. Failure to do so would be yet another example of his callous disregard and disrespect for the women and men of our Armed Forces who we ask to stand in harm’s way.”

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/10/08/trump-gold-star-families-coronavirus-427875

This is so typical…..it is never his lackadaisical response to the pandemic and the total lies and misinformation that gave him the virus.

And yet he keeps saying that his aim is to protect the American people from this illness….really?

He cannot protect the White House staff and yet he thinks/believes he can protect the people with lies and bullshit.

And his supporters believe him……then you really cannot fix stupid.

But wait!  There is more news…..

Nancy Pelosi told reporters Thursday that she didn’t want to shift the focus from the coronavirus stimulus package under negotiation. But it happened anyway when the House speaker said Democrats plan to meet Friday to discuss the 25th Amendment, which spells out presidential succession and the process for removing an unfit president from office. “If you want to talk about that,” Pelosi told a reporter who asked about the amendment, “we’ll see you tomorrow.” She then expressed irritation over the lack of transparency concerning Trump’s health, the Hill reports. “Mr. President, when was the last time you had a negative test before you tested positive?” Pelosi said. “Why is the White House not telling the country that important fact about how this made a hotspot of the White House?”

Pelosi later said in an interview that treatments, including steroids, that Trump has received to combat COVID-19 could be imparing his judgment, per NBC. “The president is, shall we say, in an altered state right now,” she told Bloomberg TV. Trump answered in a tweet that “Crazy Nancy is the one who should be under observation.” In 2017, a Democratic House member offered legislation to create a commission that would decide whether a sitting president is fit for office, in line with the Constitution’s wording. Rep. Jamie Raskin said he’s going to update his plan. “I’ve got my 25th Amendment legislation from the last Congress, HR 1987, which I’m going to be dusting off and reintroducing,” he said.

Altered state?

What’s his excuse for the last 3 years?

But this thing is what I mean when I say Dems have great ideas they just cannot play politics.

Why do this?  They are leading by all accounts in this election then why do something that could change the dynamics?

The Death Of Che

Today in history….1781 the American forces started shelling British forces at Yorktown signalling the war is near a close.

Speaking of revolutionary fighters…….

On this day in history the revolutionary guerilla fighter Ernesto “Che” Guevara was executed in Bolivia……09 October 1967.

On October 9, 1967, socialist revolutionary and guerilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, is killed by the Bolivian army. The U.S.-military-backed Bolivian forces captured Guevara on October 8 while battling his band of guerillas in Bolivia and executed him the following day. His hands were cut off as proof of death and his body was buried in an unmarked grave. In 1997, Guevara’s remains were found and sent back to Cuba, where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans.

https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/che-guevara-is-executed

What about his life as a fighter and later a statesman…..

Guevara became part of Fidel Castro’s efforts to overthrow the Batista government in Cuba. He served as a military advisor to Castro and led guerrilla troops in battles against Batista forces. When Castro took power in 1959, Guevara became in charge of La Cabaña Fortress prison. It is estimated that at least 144 people were executed on Guevara’s extra-judicial orders during this time.

Later, he became president of the Cuban national bank and helped to shift the country’s trade relations from the United States to the Soviet Union. Guevara addressed the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1964, where he also expressed support for the people of Puerto Rico. One year later, he was appointed minister of industry. Guevara left this post in 1965 to export the ideas of Cuba’s revolution to other parts of the world. In 1966, he began to try to incite the people of Bolivia to rebel against their government, but had little success. With only a small guerrilla force to support his efforts, Guevara was captured and killed on October 9, 1967 in La Higuera by the Bolivian army, which had been aided by CIA advisers.

I have read his book on guerilla warfare…..very informative and should be required reading by the people that lead us to war whenever it is needed (needed in their tiny minds)…..

For those that would like to know more then may I suggest the book…..you can find the books…”Guerilla Warfare and “Che Guevara: a Revolutionary Life” on Amazon and both are well worth reading for a better look into the life of this complex individual.

All The Evidence We Need

I have been saying for years that the GOP does not like democracy very much for their actions since about 1980 have been to curb any and all of the pillars of democracy…..like voter suppression and the Constitution as a whole….yes they use the document as a political prop but they do NOT think it should be followed.

Recently a GOPer from Utah, Mike Lee, has shown the country the real agenda of the GOP…….

A top Republican senator has said that “democracy isn’t the objective” of America’s political system, sparking widespread outrage at a time when his party has been accused by Democrats of plotting voter suppression and questioning a peaceful transition of power in November’s election.

The Utah senator Mike Lee made the inflammatory declaration in an early morning tweet following Wednesday’s vice-presidential debate.

“Democracy isn’t the objective; liberty, peace, and prospefity are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that,” he wrote, misspelling prosperity.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/08/republican-us-senator-mike-lee-democracy

Lee is articulating a view that has long been in vogue on the American right but which Republican politicians were generally hesitant to express openly. The premise is that liberty is a higher value than democracy, and they define liberty to mean a right to property that precludes redistribution. That is to say, the far right does not merely view progressive taxation, regulation and the welfare state as impediments to growth, but as fundamentally oppressive. A political system that truly secured freedom would not allow the majority to gang up on the minority and redistribute their income for themselves.

Sounds a bit authoritarian in content to me.

Lee was a critic of Trump in 2016 even prompting him to withdraw at one point….but since then he has donned his knee pads and graveled at the lap of Trump.

Lee needs to look at the agenda…..

From the perspective of the right, Trump’s assault on democracy has advanced the cause of freedom and liberty, on net. His regressive tax cuts and deregulation have returned property to their rightful owners. Republicans believe that the political system must retain, and ideally expand, its counter-majoritarian features: restrictive ballot-access rules that restrict the franchise to the most “worthy” citizens, gerrymandered maps that allow the white rural minority to exercise control, a Senate that disproportionately represents white and Republican voters, and a Supreme Court that believes the Republican economic program is written into the Constitution.

Lee employs an age old GOP talking point to curb democratic progress….

Lee, who is among a swath of Republicans who recently tested positive for coronavirus, wrote: ‘The word “democracy” appears nowhere in the Constitution, perhaps because our form of government is not a democracy. It’s a constitutional republic. To me it matters. It should matter to anyone who worries about the excessive accumulation of power in the hands of the few.’

He added: “Government is the official use of coercive force–nothing more and nothing less. The Constitution protects us by limiting the use of government force.”

Anyone that still supports the GOP after this is not a patriot or a true American.

Peace Out!

2020–Who Gets My Vote?

I have done a lot of bitching about the slate of 2020 candidates….so I guess the question is…..just who will get my vote this time around.

I will be honest…I have not voted for a winner in a presidential election since 1975…….when I voted for Jimmy Carter.

Since that election I have not seen any main stream candidate as a good choice for this country to move forward…..I did not vote for Reagan or Bush or Clinton or Bush or Obama or Trump…..so I can safely said that I did NOT vote for the rogue in the White House.

I wrote on my opinion blog, Gulf South Free Press, about my beliefs and my issues I want to see in a candidate…..https://gulfsouthfreepress.wordpress.com/2018/04/04/who-are-you/

I vote my principles I refuse to settle for the least smelly candidate…..some think that my vote is wasted on a 3rd party candidate….and that is their opinion personally I think if you settle for the least offensive candidate then YOUR VOTE was/is wasted.

In 2016 I looked at the Green Party….I just could not put my faith in Jill Stein…I also checked out the Modern Whig Party, I liked what I read but they did not offer a candidate…..Libertarians I like the antiwar posture but their idea of hyper-capitalism turns me off…..I admit it I did check out a couple of the so-called Left wing parties….not impressed.

The major parties have historically eliminated the third parties by silly rules that make them the only game in town…..rules like…..A third party candidate will sometimes strike a chord with a section of voters in a particular election, bringing an issue to national prominence and amount a significant proportion of the popular vote. Major parties often respond to this by adopting this issue in a subsequent election. After 1968, under President Nixon the Republican Party adopted a “Southern Strategy” to win the support of conservative Democrats opposed to the Civil Rights Movement and resulting legislation and to combat third parties with southern agendas. This can be seen as a response to the popularity of segregationist candidate George Wallace who gained 13.5% of the popular vote in the 1968 election for the American Independent Party.

Then the states have ways of keeping 3rd parties off the tickets…..Nationally, ballot access laws are the major challenge to third party candidacies. While the Democratic and Republican parties usually easily obtain ballot access in all fifty states in every election, third parties often fail to meet criteria for ballot access, such as registration fees. Or, in many states, they do not meet petition requirements in which a certain number of voters must sign a petition for a third party or independent candidate to gain ballot access.

This is how the system chooses your candidate for you.

But that does not answer my question just explains why I have so little choice……but it is 2020…..

If this was the GOP of 1956 I would vote Republican…….

Image result for 1956 GOP platform images

Their 1956 platform is something they should be proud of…..

Sadly those days of principled Republicans are gone….gone….gone….

If I do not like the GOP and I think the Dems are a spineless bunch of centrists then where does that vote….my vote…. go?

Libertarian?  I like there antiwar and non-intervention positions but cannot vote for the hyper-capitalism that is killing our Middle Class…

The Green Party…..this is where I have put my vote in the past but it looks like the GPUSA has been shut down……Howie is just a tool of eco-capitalism.

Where oh where?

Reform Party?  Not interested.  Constitution Party?  Too religious for my liking.  A Socialist Party?  Nope most are too chaotic.  The Modern Whig Party?  I like some of their positions but they shut down in 2018……

Register as an ‘independent’ does nothing to help when most times there are only 2 or 3 choices and none are progressive enough for my vote.

A Progressive Party, Bull Moose Party, would be ideal for me…..https://lobotero.com/2010/11/12/how-about-a-new-bull-moose-party-2/

It is a shame and a bit pathetic that I have no  candidate to vote for in 2020 (for now)……. I will have to hold my nose and pick a lying toad or a spineless slug….not my idea of a constitutional democracy.

The Two-Party System Is Not Working—and Not Going Anywhere

https://newrepublic.com/article/146884/america-stuck-two-parties

I think it is moronic to limit the voter’s choices to two parties…..we need a viable third party….a point I wrote about 9 years ago here on IST….https://lobotero.com/2010/11/12/how-about-a-new-bull-moose-party-2/

There is a party that represents the best policies of progressives….

Check them out……http://www.progressivebullmoose.party/welcome-to-the-bull-moose-revolution/  or maybe here……https://progressivepartyusa.com/

While I like most of their policies in their platform I am disappointed that they have little foreign policy in there……an in depth look at their platform…….http://www.progressivebullmoose.party/platform/

The Mission statement for the Progressive Party….

Our mission is to return political and economic power to the American people. By raising money and running candidates under our own banner—the Progressive Bull Moose Party—we aim to end the era of big money, big corporate-controlled government—rule by the super rich—and return power to the people.

There is also another alternative party that I have been looking at…..the Citizens Party….a check of their platform/mission statement  tells me I have more in common with them than the two major parties…..but check them out for yourself……http://www.votecitizens.org/platform

It should not be this difficult to find a suitable candidate for my vote……but sadly it is.

My thought on the two major candidates that are reaching for my vote…..

“Home By Christmas”

That is the latest promise issued by the president about our weary troops in Afghanistan.

President Trump made a new comment on the pullout of Afghanistan, saying that it is now his intention to have all remaining US troops out of Afghanistan by Christmas. That’s substantially sooner than previous statements on the matter.

This seems to be a very recent policy change. Just hours before Trump’s comments, the national security adviser said that there would still be 2,500 US troops left in Afghanistan by early 2021. This is roughly in line with previous comments on the matter.

Troop cuts in October and November are intended to get troop levels to around 4,500 in November, a goal that the Trump Administration has pushed for some time. With troop cuts ahead of schedule, even more cuts were possible.

Having the last troops out of Afghanistan by Christmas puts even more pressure on the Afghan government and Taliban to make good on efforts to make a deal, at least on a framework, or risk a new round of violence.

(antiwar.com)

After almost 20 years it is time for us to rid ourselves of this conflict….15 years too late……

Even the most enthusiastic interventionists must now recognize that the war is militarily unwinnable. The hopes of a peace agreement between the Taliban and Afghan government should not delay the end of American involvement in the war and our full withdrawal. Anything less confirms Washington’s unwillingness to recognize two decades of failure and condemns yet more American troops to pointlessly sacrifice their lives and limbs.

https://outline.com/3MSMVw

People like me have been calling for this very thing for a decade maybe longer.

I worry that this is a promise in words only for after all it is the election season and our president has made many many promises that have not been kept.

Or could there be what some call a “surprise” that would require the US to extend their presence…we will be told it is for awhile….and we know we have heard all this before.
