Closing Thought–23Apr20

The pandemic has the world in flux…..Supermarkets are suffering….shopping is suffering…..farmers are suffering……and now we hear that breweries are staring to suffer….

Germany’s Werneck Brewery has survived world wars, economic crises, and decades of declining beer consumption. But after 400 years it has finally met a fatal challenge: the coronavirus. The brewery, which the AP reports traces its history to 1617 and has been owned by the same family since 1861, is closing for good, taking with it 15 full-time jobs and more part-time positions. Also gone is a chunk of local history and tradition in Werneck, a town of 10,000 in the brewery-rich state of Bavaria. German brewers fear its demise is the leading edge of more closures as the virus outbreak threatens the existence of the country’s many local producers of the national beverage—community institutions, often family owned for generations, whose buildings and affiliated taverns are regional landmarks in a country where the hometown brew is a sentimental favorite despite national competition.

Hardest hit are smaller breweries that like Werneck that depend on supplying kegs to local taverns and events such as local festivals. Retail sales are providing some support as people drink at home. Breweries are trying things like drive-through sales and even shipping beer and glasses to customers so they can join an online tasting. Family member and brewery manager Christine Lang said the decision to close came with “many tears.” The beer market was already hard fought with tough price competition, she said. Then came the virus, and the restaurants the brewery depended on were suddenly closed. The head of the German Brewers Association said that “many breweries will not survive this crisis, that is already becoming clear.” For Lang something irreplaceable has been lost. “My family and I will miss it very much. The brewery has been … part of every dinner table conversation all our lives. We will be missing part of our identity, and in a way the region will too.”

Even Oktoberfest is in jeopardy……

Since social distancing and Oktoberfest go together about as well as beer and milk, this year’s festival in Bavaria has become the latest COVID-19 casualty. This is the first time the beerfest has been cancelled since World War II and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter says it is a “bitter pill to swallow,” Bloomberg reports. Last year’s festival attracted around 6 million visitors. This year’s event had been scheduled to run from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, but authorities said that with no coronavirus vaccine available, the public health risk was simply too high, the Guardian reports. This isn’t the first disease-related cancellation in Oktoberfest’s 210-year history: It was called off amid cholera outbreaks in 1854 and 1873. Other iconic events including the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain have also been called off, reports the AP.

Germany without beer will be ripe for revolution…..how long before the US has a similar problem…..what will the faithful do without their daily dose of alcohol?

Biden’s Foreign Policy

As long as you are sheltering at home…..why not start learning about the candidate/s?

Well sports fans looks like Biden will get the nod for the Dem nomination……he needs to thank the media for pushing his old ass across the finish line.

I am a foreign policy wonk so I would like to look into the policies of Biden……and after years of watching him his are not all that special.

When former Vice President Joe Biden presented his vision for “rescuing” U.S. foreign policy in Foreign Affairs, his grim performance in the early election contests suggested he would never get the chance to put his ideas into practice. But now that Super Tuesday has propelled his candidacy to frontrunner status, it’s time to take a second look at what Biden is proposing.

Biden offers a proudly restorationist foreign policy. His main pitch is to bring back U.S. global “leadership” after its supposed Trumpian aberration, rather than to deliver what the American people  need and increasingly demand: a clean break from decades of policy failure, to which Biden himself has contributed.

One would expect Biden to defend the overall foreign policy record of the administration in which he served as vice president. Yet one might also expect him to tell voters a few ways in which he intends to do things differently. Biden declines to do so. His essay ignores the debacles of the Obama administration, if he recognizes them as such.

Biden does not reference the chaos in Libya to which the administration contributed by bombing the country and prolonging its civil war, still raging to this day. He says nothing about how the administration armed unaccountable, allegedly moderate Syrian fighters for years, compounding the country’s humanitarian nightmare. He does not acknowledge U.S. complicity in the 2009 military coup in Honduras that destabilized the country and sent thousands fleeing as refugees. To the contrary, Biden boasts of his success in helping to secure “a $750 million aid program to back up commitments from the leaders of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to take on the corruption, violence, and endemic poverty driving people to leave their homes there.”

Why Joe Biden’s foreign policy vision isn’t so visionary

For years Biden has misled the public on his foreign policy bona fides……3 major lies….his Iraq war vote, the Osama Raid and his Afghan vote……

Former vice president Joe Biden has spun his foreign policy bona fides for the better part of two decades in order to make them fit with the political zeitgeist. Now, as he nears the Democratic nomination, it’s time for the media to take a closer look.

With that in mind, here are three of Biden’s most outrageous distortions of his national security record.

3 Tallest Biden Tales on Foreign Policy

His lack of showing any responsibility for Obama’s screw ups takes him off the ballot for me….plus his constant misspeaking on foreign policies……

But think about something the American Conservative brought to light…..Biden’s foreign policy help give us Trump……

For anyone who wants nothing more than to return this country to the status quo ante Trump, Biden might make for an acceptable candidate. He is, after all, a consummate political insider. He knows his lines and he recites them (or reads them off a teleprompter) with apparent conviction. Unlike Trump, he at least sounds presidential. Yet Biden is also a card-carrying member of the political establishment whose myriad failures vaulted Trump into the White House in the first place.

If elected, Biden can be counted on to take the country back to where it was before Trump showed up to spoil the party. My progressive friends are unhappy with that prospect. So should conservatives be as well.

Hydroxychloroquine–Part 2

Yes Irene this is that drug that Donald the Orange has stated shows great promise in the treatment of Covid-19…..to remind my reader I covered this drug in the past…..https://lobotero.com/2020/04/08/hydroxychloroquine/

Since I wrote that post more info has come to light…like the drugs associated with this miracle drug (according to Trump)……

A malaria drug widely touted by President Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in US veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported. The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far at hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19. The study was posted on an online site for researchers and has been submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, but has not been reviewed by other scientists. Researchers analyzed medical records of 368 male veterans hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection at Veterans Health Administration medical centers who died or were discharged by April 11.

The AP reports about 28% who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. About 22% of those getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the difference between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could have affected survival. Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either. Researchers did not track side effects, but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.

Just maybe this is not the “miracle” that the Orangeman promises it to be…..plus in a retaliatory move Donald the Orange has fired the head of a health agency for not agree with him…..

The head of a government agency combating the coronavirus pandemic alleged Wednesday that he was ousted for opposing politically connected efforts to promote a malaria drug that President Trump touted without proof as a remedy for COVID-19, the AP reports. Rick Bright, former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, said in a statement that he was summarily removed from his job on Tuesday and reassigned to a lesser role. His lawyers, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, called it “retaliation plain and simple.” Controversy has swirled around the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine since Trump started promoting it from the podium in the White House briefing room.

BARDA, the agency that Bright formerly headed, is a unit of the Department of Health and Human Services created to counter threats from bioterrorism and infectious diseases. It has recently been trying to jump-start work on a vaccine for the coronavirus. “I am speaking out because to combat this deadly virus, science—not politics or cronyism—has to lead the way,” said Bright, who has a doctoral degree in immunology. “Specifically, and contrary to misguided directives, I limited the broad use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, promoted by the administration as a panacea, but which clearly lack scientific merit. I also resisted efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs promoted by those with political connections.” There was no immediate response from HHS.

On a side note ….you know those tests that according to Donald the Orange says are widely available?

Well here is a reminder for those with short memories when it comes to the crap coming from Trump…..

“This is probably the number one problem in America, and has been from the beginning of this crisis, the lack of testing,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican and the chairman of the National Governors Association, said on CNN Sunday.

Trump fired back Monday, insisting that there was “tremendous capacity” for coronavirus testing at U.S. labs. He said governors like Hogan just needed “to get a little knowledge” about the testing situation.

In fact, the country’s largest private labs say they have plenty of capacity to test samples sent from medical offices and hospitals. But governors in a wide array of states say healthcare providers can’t conduct the tests because of a lack of supplies such as swabs and a chemical known as a “reagent” crucial to the process.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/04/21/coronavirus-trump-claims-there-plenty-tests-states-disagree/2997841001/

Even with adequate supplies the country would need to give a tremendous amount of tests….

A cross-disciplinary team of experts argue in a new report that the United States will need “20 million tests per day by mid-summer to fully re-mobilize the economy” and “help ensure a safe social opening” in the midst of the pandemic.

“What we need to do is much bigger than most people realize,” reads the report’s executive summary. “We need to massively scale-up testing, contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine — together with providing the resources to make these possible for all individuals.”

https://futurism.com/neoscope/experts-20-million-tests-per-day

This whole testing thing is down to semantics……test are there that is true…the problem is there is little supplies to actually run these tests.

Covid-19 And Civil Rights

This from my Opinion blog, Gulf South Free Press, there seems to be some concern on the loss of freedoms during this pandemic…..chuq

Gulf South Free Press

There have been many institutions in our society that have been altered by the Covid-19…..including our civil liberties. We have had a lot of back and forth about this virus but the one subject that has been a bit silent is that of civil liberties…..and now it comes to light on IST…….

Philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote, “Neither a man nor a crowd nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely or to think sanely under the influence of great fear.” The United States is now in the grip of such a fear. It is prostrating before authoritarians in government who have waited for such a moment and now relish in ordering us indoors.

In loudly applauding the authoritarian shutdown orders of American governments, many seem to be conflating at least a few separate sets of issues that relate to different areas of expertise.

The first area of expertise is…

More Covid-19 Sad News

Not all the news around the Covid-19 is about the health and medical issues…..racism and conspiracies abound….

First the racism from days gone by…..

There’s been a surge in harassment toward Asian Americans in recent weeks: According to Stop AAPI Hate, an organization that’s been tracking self-reported incidents, more than 1,100 physical and verbal attacks against Asian Americans have been documented since late March.

The high number of reports, which have been submitted over just two weeks, is especially striking since people across the country have predominantly been sheltering in place. The incidents — logged through the Stop AAPI Hate website, which launched on March 19 — are wide-ranging.

In one, an Asian American child was pushed off her bike by a bystander at a park. In another, a family at a grocery store was spat on and accused of being responsible for the coronavirus. For some, including one Japanese restaurant owner, the harassment has come in the form of vandalism.

Among these reports, which come from 46 states, there are notable patterns: women were more likely than men to say they were targeted, several incidents involved children, and harassment was more likely to occur at retail stores and pharmacies now that people in most states are sheltering in place.

These idiots are the ones that listen to the moron in the White House when he calls it a China virus…..mental midgets echo this sentiment that has no validity…..a virus has NO nationality.

And the other thing are the conspiracies flowing around the Covid-19…….now it is dealing with the new 5G network……

The CCTV footage from a Dutch business park shows a man in a black cap pouring the contents of a white container at the base of a cellular radio tower. Flames burst out as the man jogs back to his Toyota to flee into the evening. It’s a scene that’s been repeated dozens of times in recent weeks in Europe, where conspiracy theories linking new 5G mobile networks and the coronavirus pandemic are fueling arson attacks on cell towers. Popular beliefs and conspiracy theories that wireless communications pose a threat have long been around, but the global spread of the virus at the same time that countries were rolling out fifth generation wireless technology has seen some of those false narratives amplified, reports the AP, which says the claims range from the coronavirus being a coverup for 5G deployment to 5G installations actually having created the virus.

Officials in Europe and the US are watching the situation closely and pushing back, concerned that attacks will undermine vital telecommunications links at a time they’re most needed to deal with the pandemic. Some 50 fires targeting cell towers and other equipment have been reported in Britain this month, leading to three arrests. Telecom engineers have been abused on the job 80 times, according to trade group Mobile UK, making the UK the nucleus of the attacks. Photos and videos documenting the attacks are often overlaid with false commentary about COVID-19. Some 16 have been torched in the Netherlands, with attacks also reported in Ireland, Cyprus, and Belgium.

I am sure that there are other idiots out there…if anyone has a story about them please share it with me.
