Closing Thought–07Apr20

In these days of yore and a rampaging virus the election of 2020 has little interest anymore….not to the media….not to the people and not to most bloggers.

But it should be for we are talking about the future of this country….step up and pay attention!

Looks like Biden will be the presumptive Dem nominee that will meet Donald the Orange in November…….if true then how are the two doing in a head to head match up?

With his approval rating at a high point, President Trump is now running nearly even with Vice President Joe Biden among voters in a new poll. As the pandemic has worsened, the president has erased most of last month’s 7-point gap between the two, the Washington Post reports. Biden’s lead among registered voters is 49% to 47%, which is within the margin of error. Among adults overall, 50% back Biden and 44% support Trump. Biden’s only rival left for the Democratic nomination appears to be out of the picture. The big lead that Sen. Bernie Sanders had in February has nearly flipped, and Biden leads him 55% to 39% among Democrats and independents who lean that way. The Post-ABC News poll, taken last week, reports a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Other polls in the past week also show Trump’s support for the November election running lower than his 48% approval rating, Politico points out. A Monmouth University poll has Biden at 48% and Trump at 45%. Fox News found a bigger lead for Biden, 49% to 40%. All three polls show support for Trump’s handling of the pandemic to be higher than his overall approval rating; the Post-ABC poll found voters split about evenly between when asked whether they trust Trump or Biden more to deal with outbreak. Still, the polls indicate less support for a second term. The biggest difference was in their supporters’ fervor. The Post-ABC poll found 55% of the registered voters backing Trump were very enthusiastic about it, while 32% were less so. Just 28% backing Biden expressed very enthusiastic support, with 45% saying they were somewhat less enthusiastic

Let’s say Biden beats Trump….how will that play in the “war” against a raging virus?  I mean the damage would have already been done… will he, Biden, cope with the aftermath of the devastation?

War Criminal Gets A Monument

My regulars know that I do like my history and try to pass on a little knowledge to my visitors.

This Covid-19 thing has made my historical posts dwindle down to a trickle unless it is something about pandemics through the ages.

I would like to rectify my oversight…..

My newest history lesson is about an Italian general in Ethiopia during World War 2 and his escape from the atrocities that he carried out……his name was Rodolfo Graziani……

The town of Affile in Italy’s Lazio region erected a mausoleum to Italian Army Marshal Rodolfo Graziani in August 2012. The event occurred 57 years after the controversial marshal’s death on January 11, 1955. As emcee of the elaborate memorial service, Mayor Ettore Viri was joined by a special delegate from the Vatican. Emblazoned with the words “Fatherland” and “Honor,” Graziani’s new tomb cost Italian taxpayers $160,000.

The event touched off an uproar because of Graziani’s role in war crimes in Ethiopia in the aftermath of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935-1937. As a result the Lazio parliamentary regime cancelled funding for the project in 2013 in the wake of a negative reaction at the polls in regional elections. The Lazio Regional Council’s legal action to remove Graziani’s name from his own monument reportedly is still pending.

In the postwar bloodlust by the Soviet Communist Party that occurred in April 1945, no real Italian war crimes trials ever emerged as they did at both Nuremberg and Tokyo. This was partly because almost all the captured top Fascists had been simply gunned down without any hearings. The elimination began with Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, identified as “Il Duce” to his followers as the leader of the National Fascist Party, on April 28, 1945, and continued downward.

Italian War Criminal Rodolfo Graziani

Too many war criminals escaped their just rewards for their cruelty….even some Nazis that were protected by the US…..Operation Paperclip……

Although he officially sanctioned the operation, President Harry Truman forbade the agency from recruiting any Nazi members or active Nazi supporters. Nevertheless, officials within the JIOA and Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—the forerunner to the CIA—bypassed this directive by eliminating or whitewashing incriminating evidence of possible war crimes from the scientists’ records, believing their intelligence to be crucial to the country’s postwar efforts.

Just goes to show with the right connections or right profession anyone can escape the atrocities that they committed….and all in the name of “democracy”…..

It is pathetic!

It Only Works For The Wealthy

We now have a new stim plan that will help (supposedly) all aspects of society……and yet I have my doubts.

You know some of the rhetoric and the actions taken during this trying time smacks a lot like the 2008 crash “solutions”…..

Seriously! It all sounds too damn familiar.  Think back to 2008…..

From December 2007 to November 10, 2011, the Federal Reserve, secretly and without the awareness of Congress, funneled $19.6 trillion in cumulative loans to bail out the trading houses on Wall Street. Just 14 global financial institutions received 83.9 percent of those loans or $16.41 trillion. (See chart above.) A number of those banks were insolvent at the time and did not, under the law, qualify for these Fed loans. Significant amounts of these loans were collateralized with junk bonds and stocks, at a time when both markets were in freefall. Under the law, the Fed is only allowed to make loans against “good” collateral.

Six of the institutions receiving massive loans from the Fed were not even U.S. banks but global foreign banks that had to be saved because they were heavily interconnected to the Wall Street banks through unregulated derivatives. If one financial institution in this daisy chain of derivatives failed, it would set off a domino effect.

The Dark Secrets in the Fed’s Last Wall Street Bailout Are Getting a Devious Makeover in Today’s Bailout

The article sounds all too familiar.  The wealthy gets the bailout and protection and the people get crumbs and lies.

The American people are now starting to think that maybe the wealthy will get the good news more so than them…..

New polling out Wednesday backdropped by the continuing coronavirus outbreak shows that most of the country believes the U.S. political system works only for the wealthy and elite rather than for working people.

In a survey of 1,002 Americans taken by The Hill/HarrisX, 57% of respondents said they believe the political system serves the interests of the wealthy and powerful versus 32% who said it works for all Americans.

Low-income Americans were more likely than people who are well-off financially to say the system works for wealthy insiders—61% to 55%. Women were 12% more likely than men, and Democratic and independent voters were more likely than Republicans to say the U.S. government is designed to serve elites.

Bloggers like myself have been telling the American people this very thing for, in my case 14 years, and now they see it…..better late than never, as they say.

Sad part is when all this is over those same people will return to voting for the spineless slugs that work for the corporations and wealthy…..what does that say about the voter?

More sad news waiting to happen…..

Critics slammed the Trump administration for considering “rewarding vulture capitalists profiting off a crisis.”

As desperate workers, the unemployed, and small businesses struggle to obtain benefits authorized under the multi-trillion-dollar coronavirus stimulus package President Donald Trump signed into law late last month, the White House is reportedly considering an additional slate of aid measures that critics say would disproportionately favor the wealthy while providing little relief for those most in need.

The Washington Post, citing two anonymous officials familiar with White House discussions, reported late Sunday that the Trump administration is weighing “a payroll-tax cut, a capital-gains tax cut, creating 50-year Treasury bonds to lock in low interest rates, and a waiver that would clear businesses of liability from employees who contract the coronavirus on the job.”

Yet more help for the wealthy while us peasants struggle to pay bills and eat……but what can you expect from capitalism?

Those Health Concerns

Now more than ever have Americans shown concern for their health….us old farts have been concerned for a very long time but the younger among us are starting to see the need for all Americans to have adequate health care.

Covid-19 has shown the holes in our present system of medical care…..and the rise of this virus can be traced back to the Reagan era.

In the 1980s, US hospitals began to transform from institutions providing comprehensive care, no matter how long it took, to healthcare factories intent on shuffling patients in and out as quickly as possible. While this was meant to save money, shortages of basic equipment during the coronavirus outbreak have revealed the high price of these cost-cutting measures.

The shortage of beds, masks, ventilators, and other lifesaving equipment that is now putting American lives at risk can be traced back to federal healthcare reimbursement changes that were initiated during the Reagan administration and have continued ever since, experts say.

Specifically, this cost-cutting trend began in 1983, when Congress changed the reimbursement system for Medicare, says Stephen Mihm, a University of Georgia history professor who has studied the evolution of US healthcare financing.

Reagan-Era Medicare Changes Leave US Vulnerable to COVID-19, Experts Say

Funny how just 3 months ago I was getting all sorts of anti Medicare For All comments and now they just are not there in numbers…..the pandemic has done one thing….the popularity of Medicare For All has gone up……

Support for Medicare for All among U.S. voters has reached a nine-month high in a Morning Consult/Politico tracking poll as the deadly and ongoing coronavirus pandemic lays bare the horrors and systemic inefficiencies of America’s profit-driven healthcare system.

The survey (pdf), released Wednesday, found that 55 percent of U.S. voters support Medicare for All, a nine-point jump since February. While support for Medicare for All is highest among Democratic voters at 75%, a majority of Independents—52%—also support the policy, along with 31% of Republicans.

Time to stop pussy footing around…..lives are at stake….DROP THE Eligibility AGE NOW!

The coronavirus pandemic and resulting economic collapse could cause a staggering 35 million people in the U.S. to lose their employer-sponsored health insurance over the next several months, with lower-income Americans bearing the brunt of the damage.

That’s according to a report (pdf) released Friday by the research and consulting firm Health Management Associates (HMA). The new analysis warns that, depending on the severity of U.S. job losses, “the number of people receiving coverage from an employer could decline by 12 to 35 million, including both workers and family members.”

The worst-case scenario presented in the report projects a U.S. unemployment rate of 25%—equal to the jobless rate at the peak of the Great Depression. Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis predicted last month that the unemployment rate could reach 32% by the end of June.

As more Americans are infected and die the more the calls will be for the government get off their collective asses and do something about this poor health care.

People like me have been saying that for decades….and it is a shame that it takes a killer pandemic for some to see the need.

What Will The Post-Pandemic World Be?

In these days as we stay at home and try to lead a normal life you are trying to decide what will we do do after day to keep our sanity…..but has anyone thought about the post-pandemic world we will be left with?

Well a couple of us bloggers try to look to the future as a way to cope with our need to understand the consequences of this disease.

First, the “world order”….the US is not showing any leadership in the world handling this virus……

Meanwhile, the 11 million people of Wuhan in China, where the pandemic began, are starting to return to a more normal life, with the city’s subway system running again and businesses reopening. In the province of Hubei (Wuhan is the capital), 4.6 million people returned to work last week, while another 2.8 million returned from quarantine in Hubei to jobs in other parts of China, a mass migration that seemed unthinkable a month ago.

But international trade and travel will be severely depressed until the world as a whole recovers from COVID-19, so no country can fully recover as long as others are still in the grip of the pandemic. Different countries are trying different approaches to the problem based on their own economic, political and healthcare systems. We can all learn from each other and we will have to help each other get through this. COVID-19 has mainly hit the people of wealthier countries first, because they travel more and carry it with them from country to country. But unless and until it is eradicated globally, no country will be immune.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has stressed timely and systematic contact tracing and testing as the key to fighting COVID-19. This means quickly tracing the contacts of each infected patient and testing them, whether they show symptoms or not.

But who will come out of this crisis on the other side of disaster?

In turn, the US’s lack of leadership has opened a multi-pronged diplomatic opportunity to China, which having overcome the first wave of the virus is now exporting testing kits and ventilators to other countries. So far the list of countries receiving aid from Beijing corresponds markedly with the countries whose leaders have embraced China’s $1trn Belt and Road Initiative: Italy, Serbia, Venezuela and Liberia. Serbia’s president used the opportunity of an arriving aid plane to blast the European Union whose solidarity, he said “was a fairytale”.

Some seem to think that this pandemic will make this world a worse place…..authoritarianism will rise…..loss of rights….etc…..

In the United States, one Party, the Republicans, doesn’t even pretend to be concerned about the growth of wealth-inequality after 1980; but the other Party, the Democrats, do make that pretense; and so a deal is being worked out in the U.S. Congress that both Parties will tout as being a ‘balanced’ bailout bill, because it will bail out both the megacorporations that the billionaires own and control, and the public — their workers (especially the ones that those billionaires are now laying off). Because of the enormous give-aways to the billionaires, deficit-spending by the government will be soaring out of control, and ultimately paper money will plunge in value, which will bring on a global depression that will be even worse than 1929. Some governments will find ways to nationalize the wealth of billionaires and perhaps also of centi-millionaires in order to fund the continuing needs of the public, and there will be a scramble by many of those super-rich to relocate to countries where they still will be able to bribe enough government officials so as to provide safe haven for their accumulated wealth. Graduated exit-taxes will be instituted by any of the industrialized countries that aren’t totally corrupt, but the most extremely corrupt industrialized countries will experience massive capital-flight and a future as a “third world” nation, under extended martial law.

The Post-Coronavirus World Will be Far Worse Than the Pre-Coronavirus World

Now this is a subject that needs expanding……

Any thoughts?
