Hydroxychloroquine–Part 2

Yes Irene this is that drug that Donald the Orange has stated shows great promise in the treatment of Covid-19…..to remind my reader I covered this drug in the past…..https://lobotero.com/2020/04/08/hydroxychloroquine/

Since I wrote that post more info has come to light…like the drugs associated with this miracle drug (according to Trump)……

A malaria drug widely touted by President Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in US veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported. The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far at hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19. The study was posted on an online site for researchers and has been submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, but has not been reviewed by other scientists. Researchers analyzed medical records of 368 male veterans hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection at Veterans Health Administration medical centers who died or were discharged by April 11.

The AP reports about 28% who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. About 22% of those getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the difference between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could have affected survival. Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either. Researchers did not track side effects, but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.

Just maybe this is not the “miracle” that the Orangeman promises it to be…..plus in a retaliatory move Donald the Orange has fired the head of a health agency for not agree with him…..

The head of a government agency combating the coronavirus pandemic alleged Wednesday that he was ousted for opposing politically connected efforts to promote a malaria drug that President Trump touted without proof as a remedy for COVID-19, the AP reports. Rick Bright, former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, said in a statement that he was summarily removed from his job on Tuesday and reassigned to a lesser role. His lawyers, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, called it “retaliation plain and simple.” Controversy has swirled around the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine since Trump started promoting it from the podium in the White House briefing room.

BARDA, the agency that Bright formerly headed, is a unit of the Department of Health and Human Services created to counter threats from bioterrorism and infectious diseases. It has recently been trying to jump-start work on a vaccine for the coronavirus. “I am speaking out because to combat this deadly virus, science—not politics or cronyism—has to lead the way,” said Bright, who has a doctoral degree in immunology. “Specifically, and contrary to misguided directives, I limited the broad use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, promoted by the administration as a panacea, but which clearly lack scientific merit. I also resisted efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs promoted by those with political connections.” There was no immediate response from HHS.

On a side note ….you know those tests that according to Donald the Orange says are widely available?

Well here is a reminder for those with short memories when it comes to the crap coming from Trump…..

“This is probably the number one problem in America, and has been from the beginning of this crisis, the lack of testing,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican and the chairman of the National Governors Association, said on CNN Sunday.

Trump fired back Monday, insisting that there was “tremendous capacity” for coronavirus testing at U.S. labs. He said governors like Hogan just needed “to get a little knowledge” about the testing situation.

In fact, the country’s largest private labs say they have plenty of capacity to test samples sent from medical offices and hospitals. But governors in a wide array of states say healthcare providers can’t conduct the tests because of a lack of supplies such as swabs and a chemical known as a “reagent” crucial to the process.

Even with adequate supplies the country would need to give a tremendous amount of tests….

A cross-disciplinary team of experts argue in a new report that the United States will need “20 million tests per day by mid-summer to fully re-mobilize the economy” and “help ensure a safe social opening” in the midst of the pandemic.

“What we need to do is much bigger than most people realize,” reads the report’s executive summary. “We need to massively scale-up testing, contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine — together with providing the resources to make these possible for all individuals.”

This whole testing thing is down to semantics……test are there that is true…the problem is there is little supplies to actually run these tests.

  1. “We need to massively scale-up testing, contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine — together with providing the resources to make these possible for all individuals.”

Probably most Americans are completely fed up with this necessary routine.

    1. Why would anyone be fed up with the efforts to keep them alive…if they are then they are more damn stupid than I give them credit. chuq

      1. Exactly. But Fauci and Birx said one day you may test negative and the next day positive so one would need be tested several times a week and in and out of quarantine. Then there is tracing his family members and co-workers and all the links they have with others. It’s never ending. The disruption is making people crazy and most are at the point where they need to go to work sick or not and so desperate they’d choose that course despite the dangers. The fatigue from dealing with this has maxed out people’s tolerance and stamina.

      2. Sorry but their intolerance is secondary….protecting others is a prime concern…..being self-centered will get others in danger. chuq

  2. As I recall, it is one of Trump’s relatives (or associates) who stands to gain from adopting the malaria drug, as he has financial interests in the company. That is not only shameful, it should be considered criminal.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. What about the man (or woman) with kids and with no savings cushion who has not had a pay check for 5 weeks ? The refrigerator and pantry have been empty for almost a week ? Those of us with some savings and retirement income can “afford” to be so cavalier about it. They cannot.

    1. I agree they cannot….and these damn stim plans should work for people not these damn corporations that have been crapping their cash away on stock buy backs…let the suffer. chuq
