Just Who Was The Worse Monarch?

I like these types of things for it makes me think and hopefully my readers as well…..this post is about the worse monarchs in history.

We Americans may have a different take to this question….I am sure that many will say George III of the UK…..but with a little knowledge that would not be accurate…..

So without further ado….who were the worse monarchs in history?

From ‘Bad King John’ and the debauched Gaius Caligula to the “useless” Mary, Queen of Scots, historian Sean Lang rounds up nine of the worst kings and queens in history…

History has no shortage of disastrous rulers; this list could easily have been filled with the Roman Emperors alone. Rulers have been homicidal, like Nero or Genghis Khan; incompetent, like Edward II; completely untrustworthy, like Charles I; or amiable but inadequate, like Louis XVI of France or Tsar Nicholas II.

Some royal stinkers were limited in their capacity to do serious harm: the self-absorbed Edward VIII by his abdication, the narcissistic prince regent and king, George IV, by the constitutional limits on his power. And the mass murderer and self-proclaimed ‘Emperor’ Jean-Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Empire might have featured on this list had his imperial status been international recognised, but it wasn’t.

Nearly-rans include the French Emperor Napoleon III, whose delusions of competence led to disaster in Italy, Mexico and finally defeat at the hands of Bismarck, and the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, a ludicrously gauche and immature ruler but not actually responsible on his own for launching Germany, and the rest of Europe, into the First World War.

There you have this person idea of the worse…..do you agree or do you have someone to add to the list?

Are The Candidates For 2020 Set?

Thanx to this damn pandemic our selection for the upcoming election for president is between Trump and Biden…..if that is the case how do they stack up against each other…..

Biden has led Trump in every national poll taken in the past month and a half. But his advantage in these polls varies — and has rarely been decisive. A Quinnipiac University poll taken from March 3 to 8 (before the severity of the coronavirus pandemic was widely acknowledged) saw the former vice president with an 11 percentage point lead on Trump (with a 2.8 percentage point margin of error), for instance, but an Economist/YouGov poll taken April 5-7 gives Biden a 6 percentage-point lead (with a 3.1-point margin of error). And a CNN-SSRS poll published Thursday, conducted from April 3 to 6, shows Biden leading Trump 53 to 42 percent, one of the rare polls showing Biden topping 50 percent.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/4/9/21213793/biden-presumptive-democratic-nominee-trump-2020-polls-swing-state

Keep in mind that polls had Hillary leading Trump as well…..and we know how that ended up.

His choice for VP will be making news soon…..how should he glo about the choice?

We already know one such criterion: Biden has pledged to choose a woman. But what else is he looking for in a vice presidential nominee?

One view of the vice presidential selection process, often expressed by people who themselves work for campaigns, is that the presidential nominee is making a personal choice, opting for someone whom he or she connects with and feels would be a strong partner in governing. Another view, according to research we (Adler and Azari) have done, is that the vice presidential choice often reflects broader dynamics in the party. In this view the nominee often chooses a running mate who connects with some broader goal of the party or who helps appeal to some faction or ideological bloc in the party that is not well represented by the candidate at the top of the ticket.

How Will Biden Choose His Running Mate?

He promised that he would choose a woman for that position…and some think that Kamala Harris is the prime suspect…..

Aaron Blake of the Washington Post ranks the “most logical” candidates. No. 1 on his list is California Sen. Kamala Harris, the only black woman who is currently a senator or governor. “Her presidential campaign flamed out after an early surge, and given her background as a prosecutor, it is easy to see playing the traditional VP role of attacking the opposition,” writes Blake. Of course, she trained much of that early venom on Biden himself. Rounding out Blake’s top five, in order: Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin. The latter is the first openly gay person elected to the Senate.

A post at SFGate notes that Harris, 55, currently has the best odds at the PredictIt, a prediction market exchange. In fact, she is doing more than twice as well as the No. 2 there, Klobuchar. Then comes Whitmer, Warren, and Stacey Abrams, who gained a prominent national profile by nearly winning the Georgia governor’s seat in 2018. The AP, meanwhile, notes that Harris just made two fundraising moves likely to raise speculation about her as a VP pick. She set up a joint fundraising operation with the Democratic National Committee, and she made a surprise appearance at a virtual fundraising event Wednesday for Biden. He’s the right choice at a time when people “need to have hope,” said Harris. The former VP also spoke. “I’m so lucky to have you be a part of this partnership going forward,” he said of her. “I’m coming for you, kid.”

Any thoughts?

Although Bernie has bowed out of the race there are points that Biden should steal from Bernie’s campaign…..as well as other…..I mean he is pretending to be a progressive then talk like one…..

He certainly has an issue platform, a mix of old Obama administration priorities like a public option for health care and new left-wing commitments like a $15-an-hour minimum wage. It’s a clear platform, if not a particularly creative one. That could be fine, though, as Biden seems to have triumphed against a 2020 Democratic field with a number of creative policy entrepreneurs. Some touted policies that were either new to a presidential race, or newly prominent because of the candidates backing them.

Biden would do well to crib liberally from his ex-rivals’ plans. He’s already started, by endorsing Elizabeth Warren’s bankruptcy plan and moving closer to Bernie Sanders by endorsing free public college for students from families making under $125,000. But there are a lot more good ideas out there for him to borrow.

Here are nine of the best ideas from the field that he should be exploring.

While I may not support Biden at this time….. he will get a second look from me if he has some truly progressive ideas….so far he is a complete dud on that stage…..

Brazil Gets It Right

Since this pandemic became a world problem there has been one voice that has become the voice and the poster child of the anti-pandemic lunacy…..Brazil’s Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro sparked fury on Tuesday with an extraordinary address to the nation in which he rubbished the quarantine measures and travel restrictions being implemented by many state governors and urged Brazilians to return to work and schools – in contradiction of his own health ministry’s counsel.

The comments stunned state governors – many of whom are now in open revolt against the president.

The Brazilian people have started protesting in favor of throwing this guy from office……

Brazil erupted to the sound of banging pots and pans and shouts of “Bolsonaro out!” with housebound protesters expressing their anger toward the president. The protests took place in major Brazilian cities and even included projections of “Bolsonaro out!” onto the sides of buildings, according to social media videos.

Finally someone has stepped up to knock these naysayers down….naysayers like this tool Bolsonaro…..in Brazil it appears to be the military…

On April 4 there were reports that General Walter Braga Netto was now the “operational president” of Brazil, with President Jair Bolsonaro effectively stripped of his decision-making powers. Netto, an Army General, had been the chief of staff for Bolsonaro. He was put in power by the Armed Forces’ high command after Bolsonaro was isolated by his cabinet, governors and other political leaders over his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initial reports came from Argentine investigative journalist Horacio Verbitsky. A high-ranking official of the Brazilian Army told his Argentine counterpart that Bolsonaro is no longer involved in decision making. Verbitsky said, “There was a telephone communication from a high ranking Brazilian army official with one from Argentina, in which the Brazilian informed them that they had taken the decision to circumvent President Bolsonaro in all important decisions.” Bolsonaro is described as a “monarch without effective power.”

Brazilian Military Curtails President Bolsonaro’s Power Over COVID19 Dispute

That is one way to rid the country of a health threat…..

But I have to ask….was this action to protect the people or was it just the military wanted power?

Covid-19 And War

This country is spending trillions (that is with a “T”) on the fight against this virus that is ravaging around the nation…..taxpayer cash…….as as trillions (again that is with a “T”) fighting our numerous wars of aggression.

Here is a thought….I am a antiwar person….and I think we should use our response to this pandemic to bring our troops home and fight the real enemy we have at this moment….Covid-19.

Can anyone think what our society might have spent six and a half trillion dollars on instead of 20 years of war in the Middle East for nothing? How about the trillion dollars per year we keep spending on the military on top of that?

Invading, dominating and remaking the Arab world to serve the interests of the American empire and the state of Greater Israel sounds downright quaint at this point. Iraq War II, as Senator Bernie Sanders said in the debate a few weeks ago, while letting Joe Biden, one of its primary proponents, off the hook for it, was “a long time ago.” Actually, Senator, we still have troops there fighting Iraq War III 1/2 against what’s left of the ISIS insurgency, and our current government continues to threaten the launch of Iraq War IV against the very parties we fought the last two wars for. This would almost certainly then lead to war with Iran.

The U.S.A. still has soldiers, marines and CIA spies in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Mali, Tunisia, Niger, Nigeria, Chad and only God and Nick Turse know where else.

America, We Have To End the Wars Now

This virus has illustrated that the US just does not have the funds to wage these forever wars….time to end the silliness…..

For the better part of the past two decades, the United States has indulgently and counterproductively wasted over $6 trillion and thousands of lives on unnecessary wars abroad. The towering costs imposed on our country by coronavirus now exposes how Washington’s skewed priorities left the nation fragile internally and vulnerable to a crisis. For our own security, it is time to end these pointless drains on our resources and prioritize strengthening America

The most egregious examples of our expensive and unnecessary military deployments abroad are the combat operations in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Africa. The Department of Defense will receive $165 billion in overseas contingency operations funding for Fiscal Year 2020 alone. These operations will include a total of over 93,000 troops (including regional support troops).  Those are staggering numbers.

Since Trump has declared this fight against this virus as a war…then let’s spend those trillions where they are needed…..in this country.

The UN has asked for a global ceasefire…….and I think it needs some thought and some action…..

The initial international reaction to COVID-19 has more often than not been characterised by divisions and suspicion, as states failed to cooperate and accused one another of mishandling the disease. UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s call for a global ceasefire in the face of the pandemic thus struck a rare positive note amid the prevailing gloom. On 23 March, when Guterres first proposed an immediate cessation of hostilities “in all corners of the world”, to allow all actors to focus on battling the virus and facilitating humanitarian aid to affected populations, the idea seemed fanciful. Still, armed groups from Colombia to the Philippines endorsed the idea in the days that followed. By early April, the UN could cite twelve countries in which at least one party to a conflict had acknowledged the appeal, although with differing levels of zeal and very unequal degrees of follow-through.
