Sunday News

In case you are totally weary of the virus news and would like to learn something that does not relate to Covid-19 then IST is your logical choice on the weekends.

A warm Sunday here in the South…..rains have flooded a lot but it will soon be over… on to the news……

It is official now….the Space Force has its first recruitment ad…..

Just in time for the new Space Force……a new comedy on Netflix by the same name……
Netflix is about to skew one of the newest bits of cultural phenomenon that’s arrived in the last few years: the US government’s Space Force initiative. Ever since the current administration announced in 2019 that it was investing in Space Force, there have been plenty of jokes at its expense. Netflix’s Space Force series is looking to give all that mockery a nice home, with a strong comedic ensemble led by Steve Carell. But is Space Force really going to be the next Office, Parks and Rec, and/or Veep? The Space Force score on Rotten Tomatoes is out, and it may reveal that very answer!
Speaking of space……the US is basically selling the Moon….

The accords seek to establish ‘safety zones’ that would surround future moon bases to prevent what the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration called “harmful interference” from rival countries or companies operating in close proximity.

They would also permit companies to own the lunar resources they mine, a crucial element in allowing NASA contractors to convert the moon’s water ice for rocket fuel or mine lunar minerals to construct landing pads.

The accords are a key part of NASA’s effort to court allies around its plan to build a long-term presence on the lunar surface under its Artemis moon program.

More Moon stuff…..when we finally establish we own the Moon…..the most precious element may well be….human urine…..

As humanity pushes to settle the Moon, we’ll need to find ways to quickly build shelters and replenish the water supply. As it turns out, the solution to those life-and-death challenges may lie — well, within.

When it comes to fulfilling humanity’s base needs — food, water, and shelter — on the Moon, the European Space Agency (ESA) thinks that the secret ingredient could be human urine, Wired reports. According to ESA research, it could serve as a crucial component of the best building material available to lunar settlers.

One final space thought….the “Heavenly Palace”……the Chinese want to go into competition with the West on Space stuff…..

China has laid out an ultra-ambitious timeline to construct its “Heavenly Palace” space station — a plan that involves launch 11 missions before 2023, SpaceNews reports, to construct an orbital three-module lab.

The first piece to be launched into space is a massive, 20-ton core module that will eventually serve as astronaut quarters. China is hoping to launch the module as early as 2021, according to SpaceNews.

Move on….shall we?

I am a dog person…..and my buddy MoMo has a great nose and that got me thinking about a story I read the other day…..a story about Indiana Bones…..

n a sunny summer day in Croatia several years ago, an archaeologist and two dog handlers watched as two dogs, one after another, slowly worked their way across the rocky top of a wind-scoured ridge overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Bodies had lain in beehive-shaped tombs on this necropolis, part of the prehistoric hill fort of Drvisica, since the Iron Age. The two dogs, trained to detect human remains, were searching for scents that were thousands of years old.

Panda, a Belgian Malinois with a “sensitive nose”, according to her handler, Andrea Pintar, had begun exploring the circular leftovers of a tomb when she suddenly froze, her nose pointed towards a stone burial chest. This was her signal that she had located the scent of human remains.

The South is about to get a lot more noisy than normal…..

Some communities in the U.S. are about to get yet another surprise from what is shaping up to be a way-too-eventful 2020: Millions of cicadas making their comeback after 17 years underground. Sure, they may not be as menacing as as the giant murder hornets. But the large, winged-insects with giant bulbous eyes will definitely make their presence known with what Virginia Tech describes as their pronounced “cacophonous whining.” “Communities and farms with large numbers of cicadas emerging at once may have a substantial noise issue,” Eric Day, Virginia Cooperative Extension entomologist in Virginia Tech’s Department of Entomology, said in a news release. Up to 1.5 million cicadas per acre are expected to emerge in Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of North Carolina this summer, according to Virginia Tech.

Now in closing I have found the idea of the decade…..Fur Oil.

What is Fur Oil?

Good Question…..

Fur Oil has become a game-changer in beauty for targeting a long-forgotten part of our bodies: pubic hair. Instead of promoting hair removal, the brand praises proper care and maintenance of our bodies’ natural pubic hair growth via their rich, luxurious oil that’s meant to soften and nourish your hair “down there.”

We have haircare and skincare routines, but what about pube-care? Whether you’re fully waxed, trimmed, or au naturale with your pubic hair, you understand the hairy situations that come with maintaining your nether regions: ingrown hairs, itchiness, and a brittle feel, just to name a few.

So, if you haven’t already, it’s time to give your pubes some TLC!

No, we’re not talking about Kourtney Kardashian’s old-school mayonnaise trick — but don’t yuck someone else’s yum, guys. We’re talking about the cult-favorite Fur Oil, a soothing hair oil that’s made specifically for your pubic area in mind, but can also be used on any area of your body that sprouts hair (eyebrows, armpits, legs, you name it!).

Yesterday I found a great deal on fresh corn……13 ears for $1.56….and I went to the grill….

This will feed the two of us for a couple of days…..grilled corn…….yummy.

Returning To Work

Tomorrow it will be official in many states that the return to work is happening….and in doing so the CDC has issued some guidelines (if you are inclined to stay healthy)…..

As cities begin to reopen and employers call their staff back to the office, the CDC has issued several guidelines for how to remain safe and healthy back in an office-centric work routine.

The primary concern of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are employees who commute to the office using public transportation or ride sharing services, where there often is no way to ensure social distancing practices are used effectively.

The agency is suggesting that employers use incentive structures to encourage employees to minimize close contact with others during their commute. Straightforward options for those systems include reimbursement for parking or getting to work using single-occupancy rides.

The CDC also recommends that, if possible, employers should be accommodating to employees who wish to shift their hours, allowing them to commute during less busy travel times.

Of course, the health agency continues to suggest practices like washing ones hands upon arriving at the office and wearing a mask in public spaces with lots of people around. The new recommendations also suggest that employers should bar the practices of handshaking, hugging, and fist bumping in the office.

If you are returning to work tomorrow…..please adhere to these suggestions…..your health is more important than some silly political statement in defiance.

Be Well….Be Safe…..Be Informed……

Billie Eilish On Protests

I have been saying every time some protest breaks out that it ain’t over until a solution to the problems are found… words have been falling on deaf ears so when I saw this young performer let the words fly I was taken aback…..her words are marvelous……

As protests and violence continue to spread across numerous American cities in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, Billie Eilish wrote an impassioned statement on Instagram to condemn white people who aren’t willing to engage with the Black Lives Matter movement. Or rather, people who don’t want to escape their White Lives Matter mindset. “I’ve been trying to take this week to figure out a way to address this delicately. I have an enormous platform and I try really hard to be respectful and take time to think through what I say and how I say it, but holy fucking shit I’m just gonna start talking,” Eilish wrote in all-caps. “If I hear one more white person say ‘All Lives Matter’ one more fucking time I’m gonna lose my fucking mind. Will you shut the fuck up? No one is saying your life doesn’t matter. No one is saying your life is not hard. No one is saying literally anything at all about you. All you [motherfuckers] do is find a way to make everything about yourself. This is not about you. Stop making everything about you. You are not in need. You are not in danger.”

(there is so much more….

Well said Billie!

These protesters are making the news about the violence and destruction and not about the issue of the death…..the MSM looks for chaos that they can analyze ad nauseum and seldom touch on the death/s….

I still wait for the real conversation on race in this country……so far we have NOT touched on the issue….we have analyzed it to death (no pun intended) and still it is a reoccurring problem.

Where does this end?

Well it does not….until the race question is addressed.

Violence–Blame Democrats

The nation is witnessing the outcry of the people through the numerous protests on our city streets….

We could go into all sorts of sociological theories to point the finger at the culprit….but leave it to Donald the Orange to assign blame…..

Nope not Obama, per se…..not the media (for a change)….not even China…..this time it is the democrats…..

As protests erupted across the US for the fourth consecutive night over the death of George Floyd on Friday evening, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to urge people in Minnesota, where Floyd was killed, to vote out Democrats.

“Time for a change! #2020,” Trump said, retweeting the account @YoungDems4Trump, which listed the party affiliations of several Democratic elected officials in Minnesota.

As usual the person that some call “Mr. President” blames everybody handy or the last person he had on that meager mind….

This situation needs a strong leader of the American people and we get a dunce in the corner.

Then there are those weak kneed sycophants of Donald that carry his water for him….spineless ones like Ted Cruz….

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tried to defend President Donald Trump’s constant rants about “Obamagate.”

It didn’t go well.

Trump has repeatedly railed against former President Barack Obama, claiming “Obamagate” is the “biggest political crime in American history” without offering any details on what that supposed crime is.

When asked by a reporter to explain it earlier this month, Trump simply said, “You know what the crime is.”

On Wednesday, MSNBC analyst and editor of The Recount John Heilemann replied to Trump’s latest “Obamagate” tweet with another request for an explanation.

That’s when Cruz stepped in it:

This is assassination by innuendo……a classic propaganda trick….to accuse without proof and let the listener fill in the blanks.

Simpletons….being led by a mental midget disguised as the president.

At what point do Americans wake up to this fact?

Personally I feel it is too wide an expansion to be healed…..and the republic’s end is near if something does not change….and I see no chance of that happening……

Since the founding of the United States, politicians and pundits have warned that partisanship is a danger to democracy. George Washington, in his Farewell Address, worried that political parties, or factions, could “allow cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men” to rise to power and subvert democracy. More recently, many political observers are concerned that increasing political polarization on left and right makes compromise impossible, and leads to the destruction of democratic norms and institutions.

A new study, however, suggests that the main threat to our democracy may not be the hardening of political ideology, but rather the hardening of one particular political ideology. Political scientists Steven V. Miller of Clemson and Nicholas T. Davis of Texas A&M have released a working paper titled “White Outgroup Intolerance and Declining Support for American Democracy.” Their study finds a correlation between white American’s intolerance, and support for authoritarian rule. In other words, when intolerant white people fear democracy may benefit marginalized people, they abandon their commitment to democracy.

I have said many times that the old Franklin cartoon tells the tale of this country and may be predicting the future….

Medicine At Sea

During the time of medical emergency…..the whole world should be of one mind…..those that can should send help to the less fortunate… that of Cuba (here I do not care about their politics it is about the assistance for medical emergencies…..if you want to lambast Cuba then go elsewhere to do so….thanx)

Cuba has sent doctors and nurses to 15 nations as a help for the fight against Covid-19…..

One of Cuba’s flagship programs has been state-employed medical workers. The Cuban health system has always been the pride of the communist regime and highly praised by official propaganda, becoming almost a myth at the international level. For two years, the Trump administration has tried to eliminate that “good image” of Cuban doctors, labeling the doctors and nurses as exploited workers and agents of communist indoctrination, which made countries like Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia, when their administrations became more conservative, decide to do without them in order to replace them with others more friendly to Washington.

But the coronavirus pandemic has brought about a change in the image of the Cuban regime and, through an exercise in medical diplomacy, many are the countries that have changed their discourse with the island, and now are grateful for the help given. At least 15 countries have received Cuban doctors from Havana, including Italy and the small principality of Andorra.  The Generalitat of Catalonia has also requested the help of Cuban doctors, pending the decision of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Health, which have to evaluate whether it responds to a real need.

Cuba even offered to help Mississippi after Katrina and their offer was ignored….I think that was a mistake.

The US could be doing this very thing…..for we have two ships, medical ships, Mercy and Comfort…..are large naval vessels that are outfitted to go anywhere and dole out medical assistance….and yet we have all but moth balled these ships.

The white-hulled, 894-foot-long ships were designed with expansive surgical, laboratory and intensive-care facilities and 12 operating rooms. When deployed, about 70 civilian mariners operate each ship, and the embarked MTF’s size is dictated by the mission and beds planned, usually for 250 to 500 patients. Each ship can support a 1,000-bed capacity by double-bunking beds if needed.

But neither ship came close to reaching capacity, prompting scathing headlines and social media criticism that the deployments were unnecessary and politically driven. Both New York’s and California’s governors had requested the hospital ships, and officials praised the ships’ early medical support. Stay-at-home orders resulted in fewer trauma cases and infected patients sent to the ships. “Mercy and its highly-trained medical personnel… was critical to our ability to respond in the first stages of the pandemic,” Mark Ghilarducci, director of California’s office of emergency services, said in a statement.

Beyond Mercy: Navy’s COVID-19 Hospital Ship Missions and the Future of Medicine at Sea

These ships should be staffed and on stand-by to give assistance when it is needed… it should be equipped with the most up to date equipment and drugs that may be needed…..

The US could do more to repair the crappy foreign policy by having these ships available for humanitarian missions.

Memorial Day 2020

Closing Thought–30May20

When do we celebrate Decoration Day?

Google is just a click away.

For those that were too lazy even for Google…..

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2020 occurs on Monday, May 25.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

I am an old fart…I still remember on the day it is suppose to be remembered….

Today we remember those Americans that fell in the line of duty…..

We Remember and Honor..🇺🇸... - Memorial day 2020 | Facebook

I will spend time remembering those fellow Bush Bunnies in my unit in Vietnam…..

My unit was Company E….Third Brigade….9th Infantry Division.  We were the Long Range Recon Patrols of the Mekong Delta.

Let us start having an honest dialog about military service…..

For decades, pundits have gravely wagged their fingers at Americans for trivializing Memorial Day. Rather than reflecting in mournful solemnity on the many thousands who have lost their lives in service of their country, Americans instead — according to the usual chargedesecrate their memories by rushing to take advantage of the latest sales, guzzling down beer, and gorging themselves on hot dogs. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sales this year will (hopefully) be more sparsely attended, when they are held at all. The barbeques will mostly be limited to backyards, with just immediate family in attendance. The rhetoric of heroism and sacrifice will still be in the air, but now attached as much to health care workers as to uniformed service members. As we celebrate a Memorial Day like no other in recent memory, perhaps our pandemical circumstances can inspire more serious and meaningful observance of this day.

This Memorial Day, Let’s Finally Start Having an Honest National Conversation About Military Service

Canfield Memorial Day observance scaled back due to coronavirus ...

How To Memorialize Our Veterans

I am a unashamed antiwar activist……and I agree the best way to honor our veterans is to end all these endless wars and bring our troops home….

Another Memorial Day, another holiday filled with politicians rhapsodizing about the valiant sacrifices of courageous military men and women. Freedom isn’t free, we are told, as high officials extol the armed services for protecting Americans’ liberties.

It sounds so glorious. Especially eloquent tend to be the chicken hawks and summer patriots who had “other priorities” when it was their turn to serve. While busy today sending the young off to die in endless wars, they wax elegiac in praising needless deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, Korea, Lebanon, Somalia, Syria, Vietnam, and more.

War is a terrible constant of the human condition. It seems inevitable and sometimes is necessary. Indeed, America was born in war.

However, the great scandal of U.S. history is that so few of the nation’s conflicts were essential. For instance, the Mexican-American War was rank aggression which resulted in the seizure of half of Mexico. And that outcome was viewed as restrained at the time. After a brutal invasion, America’s most avaricious imperialists hoped to grab the entire country. “It is a gorgeous prospect, this annexation of all Mexico,” proclaimed the New York Herald. “Like the Sabine virgins, she will soon learn to love her ravishers.”

How To Honor Memorial Day: Stop Sacrificing Troops in Endless Wars

Today would be a good day to start having the conversation on how to get the US out of the cycle of endless wars…..

Consider it strange. The U.S. has been fighting in Somalia on and off (mostly on) since the early 1990s. (Who, of a certain age, doesn’t remember the “Black Hawk Down” fiasco?) Almost 30 years later, at a time when the U.N. secretary-general, supported by dozens of countries, has reasonably enough called for a global ceasefire so that humanity can refocus on “the true fight of our lives,” bringing Covid-19 under control, the US is still at war there. At a time when American naval vessels are turning into pandemic hot zones and the man in the White House has repeatedly denounced this country’s “ridiculous endless wars,” the Pentagon’s war in Somalia against an insurgent terror group by the name of al-Shabaab is actually escalating. No kidding.

Of course, if you were only attending to the mainstream media, filled with little but coronaviral news (and even more viral news about our president), you wouldn’t know it. You might hardly know that the US military was involved in Somalia at all. You would have to read TomDispatch Managing Editor Nick Turse’s recent investigative piece at the Intercept to discover that US air strikes in that country have risen radically in recent times. In the Obama years, from 2009-2017, the US carried out a total of 36 such strikes in Somalia. According to US Africa Command, by early April 2020, only four months into this devastating year, 39 such strikes had already been launched, essentially ensuring that the annual bounty of destruction there will top last year’s record 63 strikes. And mind you, at this moment, Covid-19 is beginning to tear a path of death through that country’s capital, Mogadishu.

The End of War As We Know It?

Spend a few  moments remembering those brave souls that went to war and never returned……

May we see an end to the violence and the obscenity that is WAR.

Who Was Randolph Bourne?

Randolph Silliman Bourne……

American literary critic and essayist whose polemical articles made him a spokesman for the young radicals who came of age on the eve of World War I.

Randolph Bourne was an American intellectual journalist who flourished for a few years in the second decade of the 20th century – in the Teens, the decade that ran from 1910 to 1920. Bourne wrote mostly for magazines during this period. His byline was particularly familiar to readers of The New Republic – until his radically antiwar views on the eve of the US government’s intervention in World War I got him fired.

He moved over to The Seven Arts, a newly launched magazine with a smaller circulation than The New Republic and one less well suited to Bourne’s particular talents and interests, since its primary focus was the arts, rather than social and political issues. He was able to publish only six antiwar articles in The Seven Arts before its doors were closed by an owner fearful of the Wilson administration and its Sedition Act of 1918, which made it a crime to criticize the Constitution, the government, the military, or the flag.

Meet The K9 Corps

It is Memorial Day and now is a good time to introduce my readers to the other veterans….the K9, the Dogs of War…..

Dogs are man’s best friend, but war takes that special bond to another level. Out on the front lines of brutal armed conflicts half a world away, US soldiers count on their canines to keep them safe from hidden threats and get them back home alive.

One of many dangers on the modern battlefield is improvised explosive devices, crude bombs that can be disguised as everything from part of a car to roadside trash, but US explosive detection dogs are trained to find these deadly weapons before disaster strikes.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Robert Citrullo, the kennel master who supervises the service’s 8th Military Working Dog Detachment at Fort Drum, told Insider that a dog he deployed with named Uran “definitely saved not only my life but multiple other service members’ lives by finding IEDs and other things that were just ready to go off and hurt someone.”

The Dude, a military working dog, awaits a CH-47 Chinook during a live-fire exercise at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, May 18, 2020.

Explosive detection dogs risk everything to keep US troops safe from hidden dangers on the battlefield.

These are valued members of the teams in combat…..they deserve all the respect that is given to the humans…..

So please remember the dogs that have died keeping our troops safe….they deserve the attention….and the respect.

“Get Over It!”

It is the “real” Memorial Day and as a Vietnam veteran I have often wondered why all the films made about that war feature mostly white guys….Blacks came home to worse things than us whites….and no one has ever cared…..

Spike Lee will change that…..finally the story of black Vietnam veterans will be told.

When Dedan Kimathi Ji Jaga returned from combat in Vietnam, he painted his walls black, covered his windows and sat in darkness all day. His injuries and post-traumatic stress were severe, but as with many African American soldiers in 1968, the US government gave him little support.

“They summarily released me back to the streets with no aid,” said the 72-year-old California resident.

Black veterans across America are hoping this painful and enduring legacy will get the attention it deserves in Spike Lee’s new film, Da 5 Bloods, which chronicles the journey of four African American vets who return to Vietnam in search of their fallen squad leader and buried gold.

“The plight of African American service members who served in Vietnam, where they are now, why they are the way they are, this should be brought to light,” said Richard D Kingsberry, a veteran in Charlotte, North Carolina, who began his service in 1972 in the navy. “A lot of African American service members never got cared for properly after they returned, and that is a life-altering impact.”

After so many years their stories can be told…..a bit late but maybe it will help people understand….

Here is a story that will NEVER be told…..
