Closing Thought–24Feb20

Minnesota is in the news for the last couple of years….they have an outspoken Congresswoman in Rep. Omar and they have a candidate of president on the Dem side. Amy Klobuchar…..but there is another issue from Minnesota that caught my eye……that of slavery.

When slavery was abolished over a century ago, America was ready to leave that harrowing part of its history behind for good.

But in Minnesota — and multiple other states slavery is technically still a part of their constitution. Lawmakers introduced an amendment on Thursday which would remove a clause from Minnesota’s constitution that allows slavery to be used as a punishment for crimes.

The bill of rights in the 1857 Minnesota Constitution states that: “There shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the state otherwise than as punishment for a crime of which the party has been convicted.”

Minnesota Rep. John Lesch is the chief author of the amendment, which will receive a hearing in the house judiciary committee on Tuesday.

Just another of those FYI posts that IST is becoming famous for writing…..

The Trump Second Term?

This ought to get some of my Trump supporters into a better mood…..

I know that this could be the horror scenario for some…..but sadly too many pundits are seeing the second term as a more likely scenario than not.

This prediction from the Hill….

I’m not a professional political analyst, so my political analysis is worth about what you pay for it. However, a few people who know that I called Donald Trump as the 2016 winner, starting back in 2015, have asked me what I think now.

My prediction for the 2016 race was based on a variety of observational and anecdotal evidence. I listened to Democrats, Republicans and independents across the U.S. I talked to people who consider themselves apolitical. I heard from taxi and Uber drivers, the Verizon man, stay-at-home moms, college grads, professionals, blue-collar delivery workers. And I watched nearly every rally of Trump and his opponents.

Now, that same unscientific methodology has led me to conclude that Trump has already secured a second term — no matter who his main opponent turns out to be.

https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/483344-why-trump-has-already-secured-a-second-term-no-matter-who-his-opponent-is

Is it his undying support from the American people of could other forces be at work……say….cyber forces…..

The letter, dated February 11, says that between May and July 2019, personal data may have been compromised “in a data breach” of a system hosted by the Defence Information Systems Agency.

The agency provides direct telecommunications and IT support for President Donald Trump, Vice-President Mike Pence, their staff and the US Secret Service, according to its website.

https://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/3051674/us-agency-responsible-donald-trumps-secure

Could the break down in cyber security help others to influence the electorate?

Players….like….Russia?

American intelligence officials told House lawmakers last week that Russia already is interfering in the presidential campaign in an effort to see President Trump reelected. Republican and Democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee attended the meeting on what a Democratic official called a briefing on “the integrity of our upcoming elections,” the New York Times reports. Lawmakers were told that this time, Russia also plans to interfere with the Democratic presidential primaries. The plan includes attacking election infrastructure, per CNN, as well as hacking and weaponizing social media.

Trump was angry that the briefing was held, concerned that Democrats would use Russia’s interference against him in the campaign. He was especially irked that Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff heard the intelligence officials’ finding. Republicans at the briefing challenged the conclusion, saying Trump has been tough on Russia. “I’d challenge anyone to give me a real-world argument where Putin would rather have President Trump and not Bernie Sanders,” Chris Stewart of Utah said in an interview later. In addition to securing Trump’s reelection, the intelligence officials said, Russia wants to instill doubt about the integrity of the election.

I know….it is that Russia thing yet again…..

Think about it…if the Dems do lose the election (God forbid) then they will need someone to blame and who is a better bad guy than Russia.

Not to worry…Trump has him some stoolies in Congress to keep him in the loop….

The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee denied reports that Russia was intervening in the 2020 presidential campaign to support Donald Trump’s reelection.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) was interviewed by Laura Ingraham on Fox News about the breaking news on Russia.

“A senior U.S. intelligence official told lawmakers last week that Russia wants to see President Trump reelected, viewing his administration as more favorable to the Kremlin’s interests, according to people who were briefed on the comments,” The Washington Post reported Thursday. “Trump learned about Pierson’s remarks from Rep. Devin Nunes (Calif.), the committee’s ranking Republican and a staunch Trump ally, said one person familiar with the matter.”

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/02/devin-nunes-denies-russia-is-intervening-in-the-2020-election-to-support-trumps-reelection/

Then there are those pundits on the MSM that will push for a second term for Trump…..millionaire pundits like MSNBC’s Matthews……

As Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared headed for a decisive victory Saturday in the Nevada caucuses, MSNBC host Chris Matthews pondered whether President Donald Trump’s re-election might be better for the Democratic establishment than the Vermont senator’s multiracial, multigenerational movement taking over the party.

“I’m wondering if Democratic moderates want Bernie Sanders to be President?” said Matthews. “Maybe that’s too exciting a question to raise. Do they want Bernie to take over the Democratic Party in perpetuity? Maybe they’d rather wait 4 years and put in a Democrat that they like.”

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/02/msnbcs-chris-matthews-suggests-four-more-years-of-trump-might-be-better-for-democratic-party/

Matthews has always been a bit of a political coward.

Pro And Con Of Mayor Pete

College of Political Knowledge

#8 in Series

Mayor Pete is having a good couple of weeks…..first in Iowa then in New Hampshire and had a pretty good debate….but now he is getting more scrutiny than before.

Still early in the process but there is a saga being presented for Mayor Pete…Pro and Con……

Let’s start with the “Pro”…….

The begin with the source of this article is a conserv site that supports Trump mostly….take it for what it is…..

The Democratic primary has rapidly devolved into a bitter squabble between 78-year-old socialist Bernie Sanders and 78-year-old billionaire Michael Bloomberg. Former vice president and 77-year-old train enthusiast Joe Biden is also technically running. The self-described “party of the future” appears to be doing everything in its power to ensure a second term for President Donald J. Trump.

The most youthful Democrat with a realistic shot at the nomination is Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of Indiana’s fourth-largest city who won’t shut up about the time he studied abroad in Afghanistan. He’s riding high after strong finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire but is in for a rude awakening once the voting starts in states that aren’t dominated by his core demographic of wealthy whites with graduate degrees and West Wing fetishes.

https://freebeacon.com/politics/hillary-young-healthy-winner/

Now for some anti Mayor Pete news……

This is from FOX News (do I need to tell your where their loyalties lie?)….and interview with Mayor Pete’s brother-in-law……

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg‘s brother-in-law, Pastor Rhyan Glezman, slammed the Democratic hopeful for his comments Tuesday night, when the candidate claimed he doesn’t see “any compatibility” between supporting President Trump and the teachings in Scripture after declaring that God “does not belong to a political party.”

“Yeah, in the height of intellectual dishonesty for Pete to make claims that there’s no compatibility with being a Christian and voting for Trump, [when] Pete, in fact, is the one who is pushing agendas and rhetoric that is against, clearly against Scripture,” Glezman said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight

https://www.foxnews.com/media/buttigieg-brother-in-law-pastor-rhyan-glezman

Neither of these stories do I agree with in any shape or form……all of it sounds more like oppo research for the Trump camp in the upcoming general election

After the Nevada vote Mayor Pete is acting like the spoiled child candidate….he lost but he will not go on until his little tantrum is over…..

Pete Buttigieg’s campaign has a few requests of a Nevada State Democratic Party “in light of material irregularities” in state caucuses still being tallied, CNN reports. The campaign asks the party to “release early vote and in-person vote totals by precinct,” “correct any outstanding second alignment errors identified by presidential campaigns,” and “explain anomalies in the data.” Team Buttigieg is the first to doubt the Nevada results that—with 60% of precincts counted—have Sen. Bernie Sanders ahead with a crushing 46%, followed by Joe Biden (19.6%), Buttigieg (15.3%), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (10.1%), and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (4.8%), per the New York Times.

So this is about challenging Biden for second rather than Sanders for first, as the Buttigieg letter makes clear. But does it hold any water? Politico notes there’s been talk of some precinct volunteers and voters getting confused about how Nevada’s early voting was included in individual precinct results. It was also the state caucuses’ first try at early voting, and nearly 75,000 took part. Meanwhile, state party official Molly Forgey has responded thusly to the Buttigieg letter: “We never indicated we would release a separate breakdown of early vote and in-person attendees by precinct and will not change our reporting process now,” she writes in part. “As laid out in our recount guidance, there is a formal method for requesting a challenge of results.”

You lost in Nevada just move on to South Carolina.

Outta Cash?

The Dem have been running hard and now that a billionaire has come to call they need to spend even more money on votes…..

Looks most 0f the 2020 Dem candidates are running low on cash…..all except Bernie….that is……

At a time in the race when running a presidential campaign is getting more expensive, many of the Democrats remaining have less money. After being camped in Iowa for what seemed like ages, the candidates now have multiple, scattered primaries ahead. And on top of competing with Bernie Sanders’ fundraising surge, they now face a billionaire climbing in the polls who can spend as much as is needed. Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Elizabeth Warren are nearly out of cash, Politico reports. Financial disclosures filed Thursday night show Biden down to $7.1 million, Buttigieg with $6.6 million, Klobuchar at $2.9 million, and Warren having just $2.3 million. At the other end is Sanders, who has close to $17 million. For January, the candidates raised $58 million in total and spent nearly $357 million, per the Hill.

The struggling candidates are taking steps. Buttigieg, who raised $6.1 million in January but spent more than twice that, asked supporters this week to kick in another $13 million by Super Tuesday on March 3. “We are now also up against a billionaire who is throwing colossal sums of money on television instead of doing the work of campaigning,” he wrote, referring to Michael Bloomberg. Tom Steyer also is funding his own campaign. Warren has taken out a $3 million line of credit, though she had a strong month in January, collecting $10.2 million. The problem was that she spent twice what she took in. With the new need to buy ads in 14 states, super PACs are stepping in, as well. A new one, Persist PAC, lined up more than $1 million worth of ads this week for Warren.

I have been saying that some will not last past South Carolina but the mass exodus will be after Super Tuesday, 3 of March…..

Soon the candidate count will be down to a more manageable total….one the media can run with in their attempt to influence the voter.

Iraq And The US Troops

We have heard all the crazed chest thumping about the troops that Iraqis are calling to leave…..Trump and his boys have said that they would not take troops out of Iraq……and I wrote about it recently…..https://lobotero.com/2019/10/24/iraq-ya-gotta-go/

And yet they have offered to take some troops out…..

In January, the Iraqi parliament voted 170-0 for the government to seek a full pullout of all foreign troops. President Trump reacted with threats, and while Iraq’s former PM had backed away, the matter of US presence is still an issue. But weeks later, things may be changing.

Over the past week, the Pentagon has talked with senior Iraqi officials, telling them they are prepared to discuss withdrawal in some form. The US has even offered a plan for a partial pullback of troops from some parts of Iraq.

The position right now is that the US is willing to leave certain Shi’ite majority areas, and cut down the number of troops in Baghdad. The US had ruled out leaving Ayn al-Assad air base, calling that a “red line.”

That is a major shift, as previously the US position was that they would not consider any specific cuts, and rather would engage in wholesale renegotiation of all US-Iraqi ties going forward.

(antiwar.com)

It appears that it is only a good idea when it is his, Trump, idea…….

This is typical of the Trump policies….knee jerk reactions nothing substantial…..

Do not get me wrong…..any reduction of our forces anywhere in the world is an excellent idea…..this is talking about the process not the idea…..

Who were The Knights Of Hospitaller

Please do not confuse these people with the now famous knights of the Holy Land, the Knights Templar, they we two distinct groups of crusaders.

The Crusades became more popular with modern bloggers after the attacks of 9/11 and the term “crusaders” came back into vogue.

But there has been enough “magical, mystery” BS passed around on what some call the “history” channels on your Boob Tube.

The Knights of Hospitaller…..On February 15, 1113, the reigning Pope of the Catholic Church, Pope Paschal II, issued a Papal Bull titled “Pie Postulatio Voluntatis,” recognizing the Order of Hospitallers, a military order of Catholic knights that had existed in the Holy Land since about 1099.  The order had begun in Jerusalem during the 11th Century in service of an Amalfitan (established by people from the Italian city-state of Amalfi) hospital that was founded in Jerusalem to see to the medical needs of Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land, part of the Christian Crusades.  Known more formally as The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, the Hospitallers saw themselves as protectors of Christian pilgrims in a very dangerous land teeming with robbers and warring factions.

February 15, 1113: Who Were the Knights Hospitaller?

These knights were tasked to protect the pilgrims to the Holy Land…..and that was what the Templars were tasked to do as well….so what is the story here?

The difference is simple, and not very subtle; the Templars ceased to exist, and the Hospitallers certainly exist right now, working for the sick. Originally the latter were of a military order, the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. The name comes from the dedication to St. John the Baptist of their headquarters in Jerusalem.

These are not their only names: from 1310 they were the Knights of Rhodes, and from 1530 the Knights of Malta, but they were established themselves first in (or around) 1070 with Muslim permission, managing a hospital for sick pilgrims in Jerusalem. They only became a formal order of knights when the city fell to the first Crusaders in 1099.

2020 Nevada Caucuses Results

It is a Sunday and the FYI portion of IST today will be the vote in Nevada……

Saturday the campaign for the Dem candidates came to a head in Nevada….and the results are mostly in and the results are….

In Nevada, it was no contest. Bernie Sanders cruised to an easy win, with the AP and the major networks calling the race as soon as the very first precincts reported. Those early results, here via Politico, showed why:

  • Sanders, 54%
  • Joe Biden, 18%
  • Elizabeth Warren, 10%
  • Pete Buttigieg, 8%
  • Tom Steyer, 6%
  • Amy Klobuchar, 2%

The win for Sanders follows his victory in New Hampshire and his virtual tie in Iowa, thus giving him clear front-runner bragging rights. Biden, meanwhile, declared himself back in the 2020 race after disappointing results in the earlier states. “We’re alive and we’re coming back and we’re gonna win,” he told supporters. Michael Bloomberg was not on the ballot.

This should be a beacon for the media…..those people that do not do well in a diverse electorate will soon be history….

If they are not out now then South Carolina should be the end of a couple of campaigns…..

Questions!  I have questions.

Will there be any surprises on Super Tuesday, 03 March?

Will Biden’s firewall hold?

Will Bernie breeze through to the nomination?

Where the Hell is Bloomberg?

Not to worry there is yet another debate soon and South Carolina looms…..25 February ahead of the vote……

Onward!

Those Damn Liberal Professors!

The weekend is a time for me to vent about stuff that I have neglected during the week…..and this draft is in response to something that I heard months ago……and I finally found a time and place to post it.

But first Word Press has informed me that today is my 12 year anniversary on WP…..actually I began on Blogger in 2006….but that does not count on the WP thing….so there 12 years and still going strong.

Now onto the meat of this post….

For a few decades people on the Right have been whining and yelling about all those liberal teachers that are destroying society by teaching socialism or at least Left leaning courses.

I get a chuckle at these “experts” on the University system and the teaching techniques….especially when most have never set a foot in a collegiate classroom.

To begin with the first two years of studies is pretty much the same for everyone and the course is taught from an “approved” textbook from the school administration.  If someone is to blame then the Board of Directors would be the one.

After that the student gets into the meat of his/her studies….again from “approved” textbooks…..and anything that would be considered to be taught is also “approved” by school administration….the student has a handful of elective course they can take and some of them maybe a bit “radical”.

I read a report from knowledge hating Right wing site, Campus Reform, about some course that were being taught in “liberal” schools….

In 2018, students at college and universities across the country had thousands of courses from which to choose. A handful of those classes, though, caught the attention of Campus Reform because of their politically biased nature.

In continuation of our 2018 Year In Review roundups, here are the five most politically biased courses of 2018.

https://www.campusreform.org/

Okay those courses do have political bias….but they are electives and the choice of the student…..no one forces them to take these courses….

The war of knowledge is being won…..why?

There is NO grand conspiracy in education…..An educated person would see how moronic these types of attacks truly are….

Then we have those that think that Americans have little shared experiences….

Jill Lepore, of Harvard and The New Yorker, has produced a provocative piece for Foreign Affairs, part of a special section to the magazine on the resurgence of nationalism. Lepore’s contribution enjoins us, as Foreign Affairs editor Gideon Rose puts it, “not to resist nationalism but to reappropriate it.” Indeed, Lepore calls for nothing less than “a new Americanism and a new American history.”

The problem, as Lepore sees it, is that around the 1970s, the country’s historians turned away from writing about the American nation because of an aversion to the evils of nationalism. The writing of history moved into a new era, focused on the experiences and cultures of national sub-groups and the promise of supranational globalization. But that left a big hole in the national consciousness. Lepore quotes historian Thomas Bender: “A history in common is fundamental to sustaining the affiliation that constitutes national subjects. Nations are, among other things, a collective agreement, partly coerced, to affirm a common history as the basis for a shared future.”

The Intellectual Assault On Our National Identity

All the Right’s attacks on the college education is just a way to try and silence those that see then saw the problems of this society.

I would not change a thing about my education…not even those teachers that I did not like…..I learned from them all….and so will anyone else.

Tomorrow will be news from Nevada……

Eating For Stupid?

Weekend yet again and I am waiting for the vote tally out of Nevada……so while I wait how about a little dietary news?

The Western Diet, as opposed to the Med Diet, could be making us Westerners more stupid.

A “Western diet” (or the “Western pattern diet”) is exactly what you think: Fatty, sugary, salty, and lousy with red meat and processed products — in stark contrast to diets comprised mostly of whole grains, or plants, or legumes, or natural fats.

As you also might guess, the Western diet is regularly linked to historical upticks in obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and so on. But now, thanks to new research coming out of Sydney, Australia’s Macquarie University, we can finally add “making us stupider” to the mix of risks run by abiding a contemporary eating philosophy best summed up by the value system colloquially understood to be NOM NOM NOM.

The research was titled “Hippocampal-dependent appetitive control is impaired by experimental exposure to a Western-style diet” and published in the richly-titled, possibly gout-diseased Royal Society Open Science.

https://futurism.com/neoscope/western-diet-brain-function-dumber

So that fatty, processed foods, salty, etc diet is making us Westerners more dumb…then could be extend those findings to explain the mental process of Repubes?

And yet the other side of that coin is……older people should eat more fatty foods to help save their memory…..

Diet’s implications for our memory and brain health are well documented. Leafy greens, beans and legumes, and even fatty foods have been shown to support our brains and prevent cognitive decline.

While following guidelines for healthy eating and being mindful of nutrients for our brain may seem like lifelong practices, new research is investigating whether we actually need to be adjusting our diet as we age.

https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/study-links-high-risk-of-memory-loss-to-low-levels-of-this-food

I guess that shoots my theory about Repubes in the ass, huh?
