Closing Thought–16May19

I live in the Deep South and I hear all the time just how the South has changed they are calling it the “New South”…..that attitudes are changing and that the old days are gone…..

I never believed the hype! I have not seen anything changing in my region and then I read this from Georgia…..

A Georgia councilman who came to the defense of the city’s mayor after she was accused of racism said that interracial marriage is “just not the way a Christian is supposed to live.”

Mayor Theresa Kenerly of Hoschton came under fire recently after she allegedly told a member of the council that she rejected a job applicant “because he is black, and the city isn’t ready for this,” according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Kenerly later denied that she made the remarks.

“I do not recall making the statement attributed to me regarding any applicant for the City Administrator position, and I deny that I made any statement that suggest (sic) prejudice,” she said in a statement.

Hoschton, which is nearly all white, has a city code against discrimination based on “race, national origin, color, religion, creed, age, sex.”

Councilwoman Hope Weeks confirmed in an email that Kenerly made similar remarks to her in the parking lot.

Read the entire report here.

There is nothing “new” about the South…the same bigoted opinions are still there…just hiding beneath some smiles and lies.

The “New South” looks and sounds a lot like the “Old South”.

#23–Bill De Blasio

Holy crap!

How many more ego-centric tools want to be president?

The news has broke….NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio has thrown his hat into the fray for the nomination of the Democratic Party…..this situation is now become a joke.

Really?

Does the country need 23 candidates to choose from?  A country that cannot make up its mind whether paper or plastic!

What does he bring to the table?

Another day, another Democratic candidate. This time it’s New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who announced his 2020 campaign with a video and an appearance on Good Morning America, reports ABC News. The 58-year-old, currently in his second term, is running on a “working people first” theme. If he wins, he’ll need to do a better job managing secrecy: The Washington Post notes that his launch was revealed in advance by a sharp-eyed teenager in St. Louis. Gabe Fleisher, 17, spotted a notice from the Democratic Party in Sioux, Iowa, announcing that de Blasio would be in town Friday for the “first stop on his Presidential announcement tour.” Fleisher tweeted the news Wednesday, meaning the teen’s Wake Up To Politics newsletter scooped every other media outlet.

“There’s plenty of money in this country,” de Blasio says in his video. “It’s just in the wrong hands.” He adds that he’s a New Yorker, and “I’ve known (President) Trump’s a bully for a long time. This is not news to me or anyone here, and I know how to take him on.” De Blasio may have name recognition, but FiveThirtyEight notes that he is unpopular in his home city and has suffered some high-profile policy failures—for instance, he campaigned on a promise to curb homelessness, but New York’s shelter system has only gotten more crowded. And his liberal base wasn’t too thrilled that he tried to bring Amazon to town. “Then again, he has some debates coming up, and he isn’t a stranger to a crowded primary field, so don’t rule him out just yet,” writes Chadwick Matlin.

To me he is a typical politician…..say what he needs to get elected then do what he wants…..for instance when he was running for re-election he was asked if he would give the people of NYC a full 4 years if he won re-election……his answer was…YES!  That being the mayor was all he wanted to do.

He lied!  He will lie if in office as president.

He needs to stay put and focus on the needs of NYC…let the other 22 focus on the nomination.

Just another ego trip to clutter up the 2020 election cycle.

Where Bills Go To Die

I have said many times that the US Senate is a waste of time….it is an old fart’s club that has outlived its usefulness…..

I was chastised a couple of times for calling for the Senate to be abolished and to stick with just the House for our bills and laws……one guy many years ago almost hit me with his cane…..

But I stand by my assertion that the Senate is where bills go to die….it does nothing to move this country forward.

To illustrate this is a report that came out the other day…….

Since January, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has prevented over 100 bills that have passed in the House from even coming up for a vote. His actions obstruct and ignore legislation that millions of Americans backed by electing a Democratic House majority in 2018.

“We have multiple, House-passed bills awaiting action. Leader McConnell need only call them up for debate. But instead, the legislative graveyard, where good legislation doesn’t even get debated or amended — let alone passed — is upon us,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a floor speech on Monday.

Senate Democrats noted last month that more than 100 bills passed by the House “are awaiting legislative action in the Senate.”

A full 53% of votes cast in 2018 supported a Democratic agenda, versus 45.2% for Republicans. Democrats had a popular vote majority of more than 8.6 million votes, the most in 44 years (since right after Nixon resigned).

“The progressive agenda — ending pharma greed and making medicines affordable, ensuring students can graduate without debt, raising the minimum wage and putting more money in the pockets of working families — delivered a Democratic majority to Congress,” said Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus in a statement to Shareblue Media.

The McConnell-engineered logjam includes popular legislation like H.R. 1, the “For the People Act,” which included a number of anti-corruption measures, as well as enhanced rules and guidelines to increase voter participation.

The House also passed the “Paycheck Fairness Act,” which makes it easier for women to challenge pay discrimination, as well as the “Background Checks Act,” which protects children and families by expanding background checks for gun purchases.

Those bills all had support from Democrats and Republicans, yet McConnell has chosen to hold politically motivated show votes rather than take up bills with changes Americans want.

This just illustrates how disconnected the GOP is from the rank and file human in this country.

As I keep saying…..”The Senate is where good bills go to die”….we do NOT need these old farts anymore…..time for them to take their place at the Smithsonian…..as a display of the political relics they truly are.

Maybe it is time to reconsider this bicameralism thing…….https://lobotero.com/2019/04/24/against-bicameralism/

Regime Change By The Book

Have you been watching the antics of the US foreign policy in trying to force regime change in Venezuela?

So far three (3) attempts and three (3) failures…makes one think that it is all so much manure that the Trump Boyz are spreading.

The US has a history of attempted regime change…some successful and others were a disaster for the people to the targeted country…..

Since my typing is slow and labored these days….I will turn you over to more academic writers….for now…….

The United States (US) and the Soviet Union (USSR) did not go to war with each other between 1945 and 1991. Instead, both superpowers sought to wield global power and influence by manipulating smaller nations. They did this in many ways: through diplomacy, treaties and alliances; by providing aid or trade deals; by supporting friendly political groups or leaders; and by supplying arms, military equipment and training. The US and USSR also exerted pressure on ‘unfriendly’ foreign governments. In extreme cases, American and Soviet agents worked to change or overthrow these governments. In Europe, the Soviets installed socialist regimes loyal to Moscow, while elsewhere the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) orchestrated or supported coups that displaced socialist or left-leaning governments. These interventions often brought about disruption, conflict and significant human suffering. During the Cold War, several democratically-elected leaders were replaced with puppet governments, military juntas or dictators who were authoritarian, violent and corrupt.

Now that so many of the US attempts at regime change have gone terribly wrong…the US Special Forces has written a book on the proper way to go about regime change and/or coup……(Let is write there is now a how to book on regime change)…
US Special Operations Command can now be said to have literally written the book on US-imposed regime change, with the book “Support to Resistance: Strategic Purpose and Effectiveness” released this week by their official school.

The official study covers 47 distinct cases of US special forces trying to intervene in various countries from 1941-2003. It did not include some of the more famous US-backed coups, as the study said they did not involve “legitimate resistance movements.

This meant a few pages covering each incident, attempts to sort them into various categories, and determinations if they were successful or failures. Overwhelmingly, they determined their own interventions were successful.

Apparently anticipating the problems in years to come, the study also addressed mounting unrest across the Middle East in its early portion, and waved this away by arguing that it was generally the fault of the Soviet Union, and would’ve happened no matter what the US did.

Okay right about here I need to say…WTF?

To begin with there have been a couple of “how to” books over the years and most are in my library…….maybe if “leaders” would read more they would not have to waste time and money writing a book that is already in print….several to be exact……

Form ten years ago…..”How To Stage A Military Coup’ by David Hebditch and Ken Connor….from Skyhorse Publishing….

Then from an older book…..from 1968….”Coup D’Etat–A Practical Handbook” by Edward Luttwak from Harvard University Press…

Maybe if they read more then their feeble attempts at regime change would be more successful.

Just Saying!
