75,000–Thank You

Closing Thought–17Jun20

Back in September 2011 I got my 5,000th comment and I was so pleased I even wrote a special thank you to all my readers and commenters…..https://lobotero.com/2010/09/10/a-special-thank-you/

Well 9 years later and I want to send another “special thank you” to my readers and comments…We have gone over 75,000 comments together….granted I am not breaking records here but those that comment are cherished and much appreciated.

I am so pleased with those that choose to comment on my many posts….I have many new commenters and I am supremely thankful for all of them….and I have also lost a few regulars along the way….some have stopped blogging for various reasons and others have decided to stop visiting for I am an opinionated SOB and some did not like the comments they got for me. For that I am sorry….but like I tell many I follow the advice my grandfather gave me many years ago…”If you smell sh*t then say so”………

I hope we continue to have a good back and forth….and we add many more by the next time I feel I need to issue a formal “thank you”….

Once again…thank all of you for your time and your readership….may we have many more comments and time ahead of us.

Be well and be safe…..

Hydro….Or Is It Dex…..?

Our president has spouted lots of manure and spread the the good things the drug can do……but read it for yourself…..https://lobotero.com/2020/04/23/hydroxychloroquine-part-2/

The drug that Donald the Orange thinks is the bee’s knees is hydroxychloroquine….but he may be the only person that thinks it is adequate for the treatment of Covid-19….but the FDA does not really agree with the president…..

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine no longer have the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s blessing for use against coronavirus infections when given outside of a clinical trial.

In March, the agency authorized using the malaria drugs for hospitalized patients with COVID-19 who couldn’t participate in clinical trials. But the legal criteria for issuing an emergency use authorization are no longer met, the agency said in a statement June 15.

The FDA has canceled emergency use of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19

There is a drug that shows promise but only on patients that are already on a ventilator…..

Researchers running the largest randomized, controlled trial of coronavirus treatments are heralding a “major breakthrough”: the first drug shown to reduce deaths from COVID-19. Dexamethasone isn’t new. Rather, it’s a generic steroid widely used to reduce inflammation. But it’s “the only drug that’s so far shown to reduce mortality [for COVID-19]—and it reduces it significantly,” says Oxford University’s Peter Horby, co-leader of the “Recovery” trial, per the Guardian. Around 2,100 hospitalized patients received 6mg of dexamethasone once a day for 10 days, while about 4,300 patients receive the usual care. Dexamethasone didn’t appear to benefit patients whose treatment excluded respiratory intervention. But it was found to reduce deaths by one-third in ventilated patients (saving one person in eight) and by one-fifth in patients receiving oxygen only (saving one in 25).

This could have a huge impact on death rates, as half of all COVID-19 patients who require ventilators later die, per the BBC. “This is a result that shows that if patients who have COVID-19 and are on ventilators or are on oxygen are given dexamethasone, it will save lives, and it will do so at a remarkably low cost,” says trial co-leader Martin Landray, also of Oxford, per Reuters. The cost of the drugs used in the trial was a little over $6 per patient, per the BBC. And dexamethasone is “easily obtainable anywhere in the world,” reports the Guardian. Landray says hospitalized patients at the greatest risk from the disease should be treated with dexamethasone immediately. In a separate study, the Recovery team found hydroxychloroquine, the drug touted and allegedly taken by President Trump, didn’t benefit patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

There is a drug that can help with symptoms once the infection is detected…..

US regulators on Friday allowed emergency use of an experimental drug that appears to help some coronavirus patients recover faster. It is the first drug shown to help fight COVID-19, which has killed more than 230,000 people worldwide. President Trump announced the news at the White House alongside Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn, who said the drug would be available for patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the AP reports. The FDA acted after preliminary results from a government-sponsored study showed that Gilead Sciences’s remdesivir shortened the time to recovery by 31%, or about four days on average, for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study of 1,063 patients is the largest and most strict test of the drug and included a comparison group that received just usual care so remdesivir’s effects could be rigorously evaluated.

Those given the drug left the hospital in 11 days on average, versus 15 days for the comparison group. The drug also might be reducing deaths, though that’s not certain so far. Dr. Anthony Fauci said the drug would become a new standard of care for severely ill COVID-19 patients. The drug has not been tested on people with a milder illness, and it’s currently given through an IV in a hospital. The FDA invoked its emergency powers to speed experimental drugs to patients. In normal times, the FDA requires “substantial evidence” of a drug’s safety and effectiveness, usually through one or more large patient studies. But during public health emergencies the agency can waive those standards, simply requiring that a drug’s potential benefits outweigh its risks. Gilead has said it would donate its current stock of the drug and is ramping up production. No drugs are approved now for treating the coronavirus, and remdesivir will still need formal approval.

There is the drug news during the time of a pandemic…..

Trump On Police Reform

After thumping his chest like the crazed primate that he is over the protests and the “attacks” on the police….LAW AND ORDER…was his Tweets on multiple days……but now trying to gain the upper hand especially when an election is a mere few months away he, Trump, has signed a Executive Order on police reform…..

President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday designed to improve police training in the wake of the George Floyd killing. “Reducing crime and raising standards are not opposite goals,” said Trump. His order falls short of what activists have been demanding, reports the Washington Post, though more sweeping reform measures are working their way through the House and Senate. Some highlights of Trump’s order, via the AP and USA Today:

  • Database: It would set up a national database to more easily track abusive officers and ideally prevent them from being hired elsewhere.
  • Training: It would encourage police departments to emphasize de-escalation training for conflicts, using federal grant money as leverage.
  • More help: It would set up a “co-respondent” program encouraging police departments to work more closely with social workers on calls involving issues such as mental health, drug addiction, and homelessness.
  • Chokeholds: Trump said chokeholds would be banned “except if an officer’s life is at risk,” though senior administration officials clarified that the order prohibits chokeholds ””except in those situations where deadly force is allowed by law.” The holds already are widely banned in police departments, per the AP.

Some of these points are good points…..but if they are not adopted by all PDs then these are just farts in the wind….which is what most police reforms in the past have been.

Training if done properly then it will help….again only if all PDs choose to become part of the solution if not then little will change.

My favorite part of his 27 minute diatribe was his statement on law and order and the people….

President Donald Trump on Tuesday delivered a rambling and authoritarian speech in which he defended U.S. police, attacked racial justice demonstrators, and proclaimed that Americans “want law and order” whether they know it or not.

“They demand law and order,” Trump said of the U.S. public. “They may not say it, they may not be talking about it, but that’s what they want. Some of them don’t even know that’s what they want, but that’s what they want.”

Really….a person who has no idea what the people are all about knows what is best….if that is not a fascist point of view then maybe you need to look up the definition.  He knows what his ‘slaves’ want.

Looks like Donald the Orange got the jump on the GOP who promised a package on police reform soon…..

Republicans, who have long touted themselves the party of law and order, appeared initially resistant to pursuing policing reforms in the immediate wake of George Floyd’s death and the protests that followed. But amid the growing chorus for police accountability, GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill are readying their own reforms.

Republicans in both the Senate and the House are starting to lay down some initial markers of reforms days after Democrats introduced broad legislation focused on police accountability. But it remains to be seen how much common ground will exist in the proposals and whether Democrats negotiate with the GOP on what many expect would be more incremental changes to policing.

Just 8 days ago Congressional Dems offered up a bill on police reform….

Changing rules on “qualified immunity,” which can make it almost impossible to sue police for misconduct.

• Banning chokeholds and other practices that can lead to physical harm or death.

• Ending “no-knock” warrants in drug cases.

• Requiring police departments to report data on use of force and creating a national database to track police misconduct.

• Creating a national standard saying force should be used by officers only when “necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury.”

• Limit the transfer of military equipment to local police departments.

I think the Dems bill would do more to cease some of the abuses of the police….but there are some parts of it that I do not think will help

All in all…I do not see any of the incidents going down….damn I hope I am wrong but I think these ‘reforms’ are just band-aids for gun shot wounds (no pun intended) of police violence and abuse.

Border Disputes Worldwide

The pandemic and the protests have sucked all the airtime out of the media …..but the world disputes did not stop while the US was having its problems…..disputes like…..Korea, India/China, Syria/Turkey, etc

Let’s look at these disputes that could lead to all out war unless calmer heads prevail.

The year 2020 continues to be fraught with international tensions even as a global pandemic altered everyday life, leading organizations such as the United Nations to repeatedly call for calm.

Borders disputes, a recurring theme, have been among the most serious points of contention and have increasingly turned violent.

The rivalry includes conflicts over territory, natural resources and political miscalculation. In this list, Newsweek has gathered six local flashpoints that have global consequences.

Sadly the tension along the India/China border has erupted into more than just hard feelings…..

At least 20 Indian soldiers, including a senior army officer, were killed in a confrontation with Chinese troops along their disputed border high in the Himalayas where thousands of soldiers on both sides have been facing off for over a month, the Indian army said Tuesday. The incident—in which neither side fired any shots, according to Indian officials—is the first deadly confrontation between the two Asian giants since 1975, reports the AP. The Indian Army initially said in a statement that three Indian soldiers had died, but later updated the number to 20 and said 17 “were critically injured in the line of duty at the standoff location and exposed to sub-zero temperatures in the high altitude terrain.” The statement did not disclose the nature of the soldiers’ injuries.

Two Indian security officials told the AP that soldiers from the two sides engaged in fistfights and stone-throwing, which led to the casualties. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said Indian forces had “violated the consensus of the two sides, crossed the border illegally twice and carried out provocative attacks on Chinese personnel, resulting in serious physical conflicts between the two border forces.” The rep gave no details on any Chinese casualties but said Tuesday that China had strongly protested the incident while still being committed to maintaining “peace and tranquility” along the disputed and heavily militarized border, where India is building a strategic road. Army officers and diplomats have held a series of meetings to try to end the impasse, with no breakthrough.

Remember That Vaccine?

This should have been posted 3 weeks ago but the events on the ground became more important for a time…..

Good news for the treatment of the virus and especially for the markets….a company, Moderna, and the peasants danced…….https://lobotero.com/2020/05/21/covid-19-miracle-of-miracles/

Who will benefit the most from this new “miracle drug”?

Moderna for one……

Moderna’s stocks skyrocketed 30 percent after the media touted the company’s announcement that eight participants in its coronavirus vaccine trial had elicited neutralizing antibodies after receiving the mRNA vaccine as a cure for the pandemic. The Dow shot up over 900 points in the resulting stock market frenzy, and Moderna’s stock rose to a peak of $87 per share before it settled at above $80 on closing. The company’s value swelled to $29 billion despite not having had any products in the markets to date.

Over the weekend, CNN Business reported that Moderna’s chief financial officer, Lorence Kim, “exercised 241,000 options for $3 million on Monday. He then immediately sold them for $19.8 million, creating a profit of $16.8 million.” In a similar maneuver, Moderna’s chief medical officer, Tal Zaks, spent $1.5 million on options, then immediately sold the shares back for $9.77 million, netting a profit of $8.2 million.

While we wait for the Moderna to make as much ill-gotten gains from economic news…there are treatments being used to fight this pandemic….

Aggressive public health measures to stem the tidal wave of coronavirus infections have left people isolated, unemployed and wondering when it will all end. Life probably won’t go completely back to normal until vaccines against the virus are available, experts warn.

Researchers are working hard on that front. At least six vaccines are currently being tested in people, says Esther Krofah, chief executive of the FasterCures center at the Milken Institute in Washington, D.C.  “We expect about two dozen more to enter clinical trials by this summer and early fall. That is a huge number,” Krofah said at an April 17 briefing. Dozens more are in earlier stages of testing.

In unpublished, preliminary results of a test of one vaccine, inoculated people made as many antibodies against the coronavirus as people who have recovered from COVID-19 (SN: 5/18/20). The mRNA-based vaccine induces human cells to make one of the virus’s proteins, which the immune system then builds antibodies to attack. That study was small, only eight people, but a second phase of safety testing has begun.

As we wait for a vaccine, here’s a snapshot of potential COVID-19 treatments

And the Covid-19 saga continues….just like the profits for the health industry.

Speaking of profits…….the bill for his treatment….

Flor, 70, who came so close to death in the spring that a night-shift nurse held a phone to his ear while his wife and kids said their final goodbyes, is recovering nicely these days at his home in West Seattle. But he says his heart almost failed a second time when he got the bill from his health care odyssey the other day.

“I opened it and said ‘holy [bleep]!’ “ Flor says.

The total tab for his bout with the coronavirus: $1.1 million. $1,122,501.04, to be exact. All in one bill that’s more like a book because it runs to 181 pages.
