My Thoughts For New Bloggers

I know there is a wealth of blogs that offer advice on ways to make your new blog more popular…..so my thoughts are what worked for me….they are just my thoughts not an official “advice” post.

If you are starting a blog for the first time and your desire is to be a “popular” blogger then I suggest you pick a subject that will generate followers….blogs like photography, fiction/poetry, fashion, beauty, even food…..these seem to generate more interests than blogs, like mine, that are more an educational and informative posts…..in short current events may not be the attention grabber you are searching for….sorry.

These days it seems that what you wear, how look and what you eat are far more popular than learning….attempting to teach is not as ‘glamorous’ for most these days.

My blog, IST, has been around for about 15 years and the best I have done is 4000 followers….with about the average of 100 hits a day….that is not breaking any Word Press records.

In the early days of IST I would check my stats daily and got discouraged daily…..even considered dropping my blog several times….but I decided that what I was writing needed to be written and from that point on I ceased to be concerned about the stats and concentrated on my content…..I have never regretted my decision.

Please do not get me wrong….I am very thankful for my regular readers….they are the best and you will find these loyal readers and commenters as well….just not in the numbers you were hoping for.

It seems that only a handful of people actually care about what is happening in the nation and the world.  Keep in mind that you are competing with about 500 million other blogs for readership.

If you focus on stats instead of content then you will probably be disappointed every day…..that is if you are starting your blog as a personal journey of discovery.

You could pay sites that promise all sorts of amazing stats….and there is lots of advice blogs as well…..

Again this is not an advice post just a few observations that I have made in the last 15 years.

If you are serious about blogging then be patient and do not get discouraged….do what you want to do with your blog.

Those Historic “Giants”

WE all have knowledge of the giant Goliath that was brought done by a pea shooter….then there are those giant TV shows about the big guys that have been here since history began…..but are they just fallen angels? Maybe some form of ET that visited to make us a better race…..surely there is evidence somewhere.

Those TV things try to convince us of the existence of such beasties. Shows like ‘Ancient Aliens’……but there is evidence!

Evidence that they did not exist!

It seems every time you look away from the Internet for more than a few minutes these days there are about five new conspiracy theories to catch up on by the time you come back. 

Go for a jog, look at the computer, and suddenly the Internet believes that Hillary Clinton and Tom Hanks flay children alive in order to harvest their blood (no, really, this is an actual conspiracy theory). But even given the strangeness and speed of conspiracy theories these days you might be shocked to learn that the Vatican – in conjunction with the Smithsonian, no less – is suppressing the truth about the existence of gigantic human skeletons, confirming the existence of giants and somewhat messing up our evolutionary tree.

There’s even evidence, in the form of the worst photoshop jobs you are ever likely to see.

I will begin with some pandemic news that will make you smile or cringe….

Will we begin using anal swabs for Covid testing?

Coronavirus testing is getting even more uncomfortable. At least that’s the case in China, where health authorities have begun using anal swabs to test for the virus, Gizmodo reports. According to a report by Chinese state media’s Global Times, “Studies have shown that the coronavirus survives longer in the anus or excrement than those taken from upper body tracts.” Not everyone agrees with the new testing method, the Washington Post notes, reporting that the move to use anal swabs instead of nasal or throat swabs has prompted “widespread discussion and some outrage.” A poll on Chinese social media platform Weibo found that 80% of respondents “could not accept” the method.

“Everyone involved will be so embarrassed,” one Weibo user said. Still, Li Tongzeng of Beijing’s You’an Hospital told state broadcaster CCTV that “Applying extra anal swabs can improve the detection rate of infection and reduce missed diagnosis” and they are only being used for people in virus hotspots under quarantine, Australia’s ABC reports. Not all doctors in China are on board, with one telling Global Times: “There have been cases concerning the coronavirus testing positive in a patient’s excrement, but no evidence has suggested it had been transmitted through one’s digestive system.”

Okay that is officially iky…..

More Bigfoot news…..an open season on the beastie…..

Unusually tall and hirsute people might want to stay out of the woods in Oklahoma in October. A state lawmaker has filed a bill directing the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Division to establish a Bigfoot hunting season, KFOR reports. Republican Rep. Justin Humphrey, who comes from a district in southeast Oklahoma known for Bigfoot sightings, wants the season to coincide with the annual Bigfoot festival in Honobia, reports Fox. “A lot of people don’t believe in Bigfoot, but a lot of people do,” Humphrey says. “Just like some people like to go deer hunting, while some don’t.”

Humphrey says providing Bigfoot hunting licenses will help attract tourists. “The overall goal is to get people to our area to enjoy the natural beauty and to have a great time, and if they find Bigfoot while they’re at it, well hey, that’s just an even bigger prize,” he says. Humphrey says the final version of the bill will state that people are encouraged to trap, not kill, the mythical creature, possibly with a $25,000 bounty. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation spokesman Micah Holmes says the bill is real, but the department is unlikely to play along. “Here at the department, we use science to make management decisions, and we do not recognize Bigfoot as a wildlife species in Oklahoma,” Holmes says.

Leave it to a Republican to come with a worthless waste of time and energy.

I have many cat lovers here on IST and since I write a lot about our canine companions it is only fair that I pass on some news about those feline friends….

You may soon come to love catnip as much as your cat. New research suggests the chemicals derived from catnip and silver vine, an even more potent plant that grows in the mountains of Japan and China, can ward off pesky mosquitoes. Masao Miyazaki, a biologist at Japan’s Iwate University, spent five years examining catnip and silver vine, eventually unearthing a silver vine chemical called nepetalactol, which is similar to but more potent than nepetalactone, the key compound in catnip. When paper pouches full of nepetalactol were put in cages with 25 domestic cats, 30 feral cats, and a five big cats housed at zoos, most felines went nuts for the stuff, rubbing against it for 10 minutes on average, while ignoring an unlaced pouch, per Science. This resulted in elevated levels of beta-endorphins, also known as the “happiness hormone,” researchers say.

But they were interested to know whether there was more to the feline obsession than pleasure. And the findings suggest that “rolling [in nepetalactol] is rather a functional behavior,” says Miyazaki, whose study appears in Science Advances. Working off previous research showing nepetalactone could be as effective a mosquito repellant as DEET, per the New York Times, Miyazaki’s team applied nepetalactol and a neutral substance to cats, then exposed them to hungry mosquitos, finding half as many insects landed on the cats treated with nepetalactol. Researchers therefore suggest cats “use plant metabolites for protection against insect pests.” While it doesn’t necessarily explain why cats love plants like catnip, this potential benefit might apply to us. Per Science, the team has already patented an insect repellent based on the research.

An IST Thought

Closing Thought–29Jan21

The apathy is deafening!

I never have been what some would called a “popular” information blog but I do have a core followers of about 4100….followers that stay once they follow. I know that is not breaking any records for a blog but it makes me happy that people come and stay for the most part.

I have noticed that during the so-called ‘insurrection’ my numbers shot up but now that that event is been lowered in interests the number have fallen back to normal range.

Once Biden was close to taking that oath people showed much interest and now that that event has come and gone the interests in events has subsided.

I am trying to educate my readers on what to expect from a Biden administration…..I am getting push back for most people are of the mind of Trump was beaten and now gone (but not to be forgotten)…..

I am trying to point out that while we changed the person occupying the throne of power that very little will change…..those endless wars will continue, wasting of money on bigger and better weapons, the health system will continue as it is with higher drug prices and the insurance industry in control, infrastructure will continue to suffer and that unity that all politicians desire will be fleeting at best….in short your life will continue as it is today.

NO one seems to give a crap!

Yes we have ridden ourselves of the slug that proceeded Biden….that is the only change we will get.

The truth is I am bored!

Biden does that for me…..I was bored with him the first time he ran for president back in 1987….and I have seen nothing to change my opinion in all those years.

Since I am bored with our politics and few people seem to give a sh*t I have decided to slow my roll on posts….I will step back for a few weeks and post a limited amount on a daily basis.

I am not going away just stepping back for awhile…there is only so much I can say to educate the reader on Biden for most do not care….Trump is gone and that is all that matter in 2020.

The concern should be for the future of this country and yet apathy runs rampant….that is troubling for me.

Of course that will change as events warrant.

2020 The Worst In History

There are so many events that could make the year 2020 as the worst in history……but for this post we will look at the economy….

The markets are at all time highs….and too many in Congress want us to believe that the economy is going great guns…..it is not….maybe for millionaires but as a total entity…..2020 SUCKED!

The final report on the 2020 economy is in, resulting in bleak historical comparisons but also hope for a better 2021. In terms of the specific numbers, the economy grew by 4% in the final quarter of the year, below estimates of 4.3%, reports CNBC. For the full year, that means the economy—as measured by gross domestic product—shrank 3.5%. Coverage:

  • Comparisons:The economy’s yearly decline of 3.5% is the worst in 74 years, reports the AP. In 1946, the mark was 11.6%, thanks to the end of World War II. The 2020 decline is the first since a fall of 2.5% in 2009, during the Great Recession. The worst ever was 12.9% in 1932, during the Great Depression.
    Context: All in all, given the pandemic and unprecedented political turmoil, “the economy closed in fairly good shape,” writes Jeff Cox of CNBC. “There has been a broad recovery, but economically speaking, we’re not out of the woods yet,” is how Ben Herzon of IHS Markit puts it to the Washington Post.
  • On the horizon: Economists expect sluggish growth to continue in the early part of this year before picking up later if vaccines get the pandemic under control, reports the Wall Street Journal. “Coming out of the disaster of the pandemic, we’re going to see outsized growth from the second quarter onwards and a sharp decline in joblessness,” says Joseph Brusuelas of RSM US LLP. Two estimates cited in the story predict annual growth of 4% or 5% in 2021.
  • Relatively stable: The figure of 4% in the final quarter follows wild swings earlier in the year. GDP contracted 31.4% in the second quarter before rebounding by a record 33.4% in the third, notes CNBC.

So basically do not buy the hype that the media and the GOP would have you believe…..

Bested By Amateurs

Have you heard the news?

The news where the hedge funds lost their collective butts.

A bunch of non-professional day traders pulled the veil over the big hedge funds…..all around the stock for Game Stop……

Two major players have admitted defeat in the “David and Goliath” battle over GameStop’s share price—but other Goliaths have made a fortune. The stock surged to a new high of $347.51 at the close of trading Wednesday, up almost 135% for the day, making a profit of around $2 billion for the firm’s largest three shareholders, and smaller profits for a horde of others, the Guardian reports. On Tuesday, two of the short-sellers targeted by an army of Reddit users closed their positions after taking major losses, reports CNBC. Andrew Left of Citron Research said the loss had been “100%.” Melvin Capital is believed to have lost billions on its bet that the retailer’s share price would drop, but fund manager Gabe Plotkin said rumors of a bankruptcy filing were untrue.   • What happened? NBC explains how the struggling video game retailer became Wall Street’s hottest stock, rising more than 8,000% in six months. The frenzy began when amateur investors on the Reddit r/wallstreetbets community and other forums began buying stock and pushing the price up. Hedge funds that had shorted the stock—borrowing shares with the aim of profiting by selling them and rebuying them at a lower price later—were left in a squeeze when they had to rebuy the stock at a higher price, which sent the price even higher.
  • Professionals are “reeling.” The Wall Street Journal says professional investors are “reeling from their losses” as power shifts from them to day traders and newbie investors who use sites like Discord and Reddit to discuss which stock to pile into next—and to mock short sellers for their massive losses. On Wednesday alone, investors who took short positions in GameStop lost an estimated $14.3 billion.
  • White House is monitoring the situation. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that the White House and Federal Reserve are monitoring the situation with GameStop and other companies that have seen meteoric share price rises, reports Reuters. Fed chief Jerome Powell rejected suggestions that policies including ultra-low interest rates were the cause of asset bubbles.
  • Forum goes private. The r/wallstreetbets forum on Reddit was taken private late Wednesday and reappeared with a note from moderators saying that with a flood of new users, it was becoming impossible to enforce content policies, the Verge reports. “We have grown to the kind of size we only dreamed of in the time it takes to get a bad nights sleep,” they wrote.
  • AMC is also heating up. The nightmare for short-sellers is continuing with steep rises in the shares of struggling companies including AMC Entertainment and BlackBerry. The Wall Street Journal reports that the flurry of activity was so intense Wednesday that AMC Networks, which has no connection to the other AMC, also spiked more than 20%
  • AOC speaks out. “Gotta admit it’s really something to see Wall Streeters with a long history of treating our economy as a casino complain about a message board of posters also treating the market as a casino,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Wednesday. Sen. Elizabeth Warren also weighed in, tweeting: “With stocks soaring while millions are out of work and struggling to pay bills, it’s not news that the stock market doesn’t reflect our actual economy.”
  • Where will it end? The New York Times notes that despite the hype, GameStop the company “isn’t noticeably different from a month ago,” which makes its share price appear “wildly inflated” and a risky bet indeed. The “weird little bubble” could cause the price of more solid stocks to drop if big investors have to offload them to cover their losses, according to the Times.

I think the Biden admin will either find the move illegal or they will put in massive restrictions and regulations.

Biden’s Climate Change

When Joe Biden was elected he promised to act and act decisively on the question of climate.

He has done just that with the stroke of a pen on an Executive Order…..

“Today is climate day at the White House,” President Biden declared Wednesday as he signed executive orders to “confront the existential threat of climate change.” “We’ve already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis. We can’t wait any longer,” Biden said, per the New York Times. The executive actions include a pause on new oil and gas leasing on federal land and an order for the Department of the Interior to conserve 30% of America’s lands and water by 2030. Federal agencies have been asked to “eliminate fossil fuel subsidies as consistent with applicable law.” More:

  • Focus on jobs. Biden tried to get ahead of criticism that the measures will eliminate jobs at a time of mass unemployment, the BBC reports. ” When I think of climate change and the answers to it, I think of jobs,” Biden said. “We’re going to put people to work. We’re not going to lose jobs. These aren’t pie-in-the-sky dreams. These are concrete actionable solutions.” He said millions of people will be able to get jobs “modernizing our water systems, transportation, our energy infrastructure.”
  • Ambitious goals. Biden aims to make the electricity sector emissions-free by 2035, followed by the rest of the economy by 2050, the AP reports. The orders will “supercharge our administration’s ambitious plan to confront the existential threat of climate change,” he said Wednesday.
  • A big tent. Biden’s climate plan is backed by a broad coalition that includes racial justice groups, auto companies, labor unions, and the US Chamber of Commerce, Politico reports. But holding the coalition together long enough to get Congress to approve trillions in funding will be a challenge.
  • A “whole-government” approach. Biden’s orders established a National Climate Task Force with leaders of 21 government agencies, the Guardian reports. He also established an environmental justice council to address the disproportionate impact of climate change on low-income and minority communities.
  • An “essential element” of foreign policy. The executive orders state that climate action will be an “essential element” of foreign policy and national security decisions. John Kerry, Biden’s international climate change envoy, denied Wednesday that the administration would make concessions to China on issue like human rights or the South China Sea in return for progress on emissions, Vox reports. “Those issues will never be traded for anything that has to do with climate,” he said. “That’s not going to happen.”
  • Opposition from oil companies. Oil companies have slammed the halt to new leases on federal lands, saying the move will cost jobs and make the US more dependent on foreign energy. But environmental advocates note that energy companies can still extract oil and gas from the existing leases they stockpiled during the Trump administration, the Los Angeles Times reports. “If what this pause does is say to the oil companies, ‘OK, you have thousands of permits you’re not using, let’s work on those,’ that’s still a lot,” said Nada Culver, vice president of public lands for the National Audubon Society.

It is an ambitious plan and I am behind him for the most part…..but I am not optimistic that he can get much of it into policy…..the push backs will be many….

But then…nothing new.

Our 51st State?

Closing thought–28Jan21

For years I have been writing about the fact that there is a place here in the continental United States that has no representation in DC.

That is the region we have called the District of Columbia.

Well finally there is a move to make the District the 51st state……

“There’s never been a time when statehood for the District was more likely,” Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said Wednesday after reintroducing a bill for statehood for Washington, DC in the House. Holmes, a Democrat, is DC’s only representative in Congress and since the district isn’t a state, she doesn’t have voting rights. The bill, which passed a House vote last year, was also introduced by Senate Democrats led by Delaware Sen. Tom Carper, the Hill reports. It would give DC—which has 700,000 residents, more than Vermont or Wyoming—full representation in Congress and authority on local issues.

Norton said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has committed to bringing statehood up for another vote. President Biden has voiced support for statehood, but unless Democrats end the filibuster, the legislation has no chance of passing the Senate, NBC reports. The district is heavily Democratic—Biden took 92% of the vote in November—so the Senate’s 50 Democrats would be unlikely to get 10 Republicans to vote in favor of statehood. Advocates including Carper, however, say the issue of fair representation for DC should not be partisan. They also note that if DC was a state with the power to activate its National Guard, there might have been a faster response to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot

I say it is about time that the people of DC get the representation they deserve.

But let us not forget that there are other regions that the US claims that also has little representation…..like Puerto Rico.

Could this lead to the long awaited recognition and representation?

What about other regions?  Like US Virgin Islands or Guam for instance.

Civis 101–US Constitution

These days I seems to me that the American people need to get a better knowledge of our government and no better place to start the US Constitution.

I have found that there is a serious lack of knowledge on the workings of our government….many like to reference the Constitution of the United States when trying to make their point….but usually are ill informed about the document.

This series will attempt to reintroduce the reader to Civics and the working of government……I shall begin with the US Constitution…..the document that started this republic on the road we travel.

I would like to thank teachingamericanhistory.org for this post on the Constitution.

We present below the text of the Constitution as ratified in 1787. Text in blue has been superseded or altered by subsequent Amendments to the Constitution as indicated.

 
Too many people spend time using the Constitution without having the foggiest idea what the document contains.
 
If you want to use the Constitution to make your point then maybe  knowledge of the document is called for.
 
And that knowledge should include the amendments to the Constitution….the Bill of Rights…..
 
The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. It spells out Americans’ rights in relation to their government. It guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual—like freedom of speech, press, and religion. It sets rules for due process of law and reserves all powers not delegated to the Federal Government to the people or the States. And it specifies that “the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”

“Unity”

Now here is a word that is getting a workout.

I personally am tired of the redundancy.

A wishful thinking at best.

We now have a new president and the hard work to heal the country will begin.

That is the narrative that the Biden admin is trying to get the country to embrace.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program on Sunday, Biden’s incoming chief of staff, Ron Klain, made it clear that all those who conspired with Trump to overturn the election, including Republican Senators Josh Hawley (Missouri) and Ted Cruz (Texas), would be welcome at inauguration proceedings on January 20.

Klain told host Jake Tapper that it was “more important” that those who attended the inauguration listen to the “message Joe Biden will have for the country… and that’s going to be the message of moving this country forward. It’s a message of unity. It’s a message of getting things done.”

Klain added, “There are people in both parties we can work with to move this agenda forward.” He said that Republicans might “disagree with us on a lot of things, on tax policy, health care, whatever. But we are going to try to work hard with people in both parties.”

A fine sentiment and is needed…..however I think that it is just that….a sentiment….

Can this nation truly heal from the Trump debacle that some call his presidency?

Seriously?

About 34% of the American people approve of the Trump presidency…that breaks down to about 3 in 10 people support Trump….that does not sound like any unity is on the horizon..

In case your math sucks…..that is about one third of the nation.

Sorry but the wish for unity is an idle hope that is far from reality.

In his inauguration speech Biden used the word “unity” several times….

“The rise of political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism, that we must confront and will defeat.” It “requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in democracy: unity. Unity.”

I know many Americans are calling for unity and hoping we can come together in a rainbow and unicorn moment….it ain’t happening people!

All the division that Trump fed in this country is still there.  About 47% of American still worship the ground he walks on….do you think they will have a change of heart?

I do not!

His presidential pardons have released the people that will be most influential to him in his future endeavors….whatever those will be.

Take Congress…he still has Trump loyalists still in place to do his bidding.

I mean even the GOP is split on Trump….if Trump makes good on his mode of revenge the formation a “Patriots Party” the GOP could be destroyed from within.

I have wanted to see the Republicans find a new path but I do not think the Trump Road is the way to go….although the party has been heading in the Trump direction since 1980.

Unity is just another word for nothing else to use.
