Feeding The Authoritarians

Closing Thought–13Jan21

After the breaching of the Capitol building made me think about who was feeding these slugs to make them commit such affront to the country…..not including the uneducated babbling from some on social media.

It is no secret that I do not think much of most so-called “think tanks”….mainly because most of them start with a conclusion and they have the analyst fit the meat of the paper to fit the conclusion they desire.

But what is a think tank in actuality?

A think tank is an organization that gathers a group of interdisciplinary scholars to perform research around particular policies, issues or ideas. Topics addressed in think tanks can cover a wide range, including social policy, public policy, economic policy, political strategy, culture and technology. Think tanks can also be referred to as think factories or policy institutes.

Then there different types of think tanks….

  1. Ideological tanks- These organizations work towards solving a problem based on an ideological philosophy. Also known as advocacy tanks, research is targeted towards convincing policymakers to adopt their solutions.
  2. Specialist tanks- These institutes have a specific thematic focus, such as foreign policy, poverty or the environment.
  3. Subnational tanks- These are government-related think tanks that work at smaller stages than the national level. For example, think tanks that focus on a specific state’s policies.
  4. Practical tanks- Referred to as “think and do” tanks, these institutes are similar to non-governmental organizations (NGO) and conduct more practical efforts, such as funding charity projects.

Now that you know this….let us move on….

I found that many Right wing “think tanks” seem to promote the more authoritarian premises…one comes to mind readily is the Heritage Foundation which feeds many of the polices of the GOP.

Read about it here…..https://www.ned.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Commanding-Ideas-Think-Tanks-as-Platforms-for-Authoritarian-Influence-Rolland-Dec-2020.pdf

Don’t get me wrong….I think most of these organizations, Left or Right, have a false impression they push as part of some agenda.

Run The Country Like a Business

How many times in your lifetime have you heard that a business has the skill set to be a good and effective president?

For decades the GOP has been running businessmen as presidential candidates with the slogan that a successful businessman would be best for the country.

First let me say….It Is Bullshit!

I think the last GOP president that was a businessman proved just how much crap that promise is.

A business needs to turn a profit to remain alive…..the government cannot turn a profit when the very people that should know better spend their energy stopping the flow of revenue.

A lot of Americans think the country should be run like a business.

This is a problem on a few levels. Most obviously, a country isn’t a company. Businesses exist to turn a profit; countries do not, and competence in business rarely translates to competence in politics.

Treating the country like a business also encourages Americans to think of themselves as customers rather than citizens. Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner spoke directly to this idea in a 2017 interview: “We should have excellence in government … The government should be run like a great company. Our hope is that we can achieve successes and efficiencies for our customers.”

How long must we suffer the BS of the GOP…..apparently for an eternity….for the GOP continues to lie and scrape out a position in a country that needs more from the government than Repubs are willing to work for…..

Does The Middle Class Really Exist?

It did once but it no longer has the same meaning as in the past.

When I was young there was always the meme that if you work hard and do the right thing you will find yourself living the American dream…..living in the Middle Class.

Sadly that seldom came true after about 1970…..the American people found greed and all its evils….and they liked it.

I have been telling my readers the loss of the Middle Class for years.(sadly few would listen)…..

https://lobotero.com/2018/11/09/wheres-that-middle-class/

https://lobotero.com/2017/06/14/who-or-what-killed-the-middle-class/

https://lobotero.com/2009/12/05/where-has-the-middle-class-gone/

There are many others but you need to look around IST on your own…..

That mythical place called the Middle Class…..sorry but it NO linger exists….

Delia did everything right. She went to college, she got a teaching degree, she found a reliable job, and she got married. She and her husband had two kids. “We followed the traditional path to middle class and economic security,” she told me. “Or so I thought.”

As a teacher in New Jersey, Delia, age 41, makes around $115,000 a year; her husband, who works as a carpenter, makes $45,000. Their $160,000 combined family salary places them firmly in the American middle class, the boundaries of which are considered to be two-thirds of the US median household income on the lowest end and double that same median on the highest, and adjusted for location. (According to the Pew Middle Class Calculator, Delia’s household income places her family in the “middle tier” along with 49 percent of households in the greater tri-state area.)

To most people, $160,000 sounds like a lot of money. “Middle tier” sounds pretty solid. So why does Delia feel so desperate? She’s able to put $150 a month into a retirement account, but the family’s emergency savings account hovers at just $400. Going on vacation has meant juggling costs on several credit cards. “I don’t feel like I’ll ever have a day that I won’t be worried about money,” she said. “I’m resentful of my partner for not making more money, but more resentful of his crappy employer for not paying him more.”

And yet the GOP and Centrist Dems keep trying to sll the antiquated idea of a Middle Class.

Do Not Believe It!

Look around and tell me what you see.

Could Russia Finally Dominate The World?

The USSR tried unsuccessfully to dominate the world in its day and failed……climate change is real and could it be just the thing Russia needs to finally dominate?

Around the world, climate change is becoming an epochal crisis, a nightmare of drought, desertification, flooding and unbearable heat, threatening to make vast regions less habitable and drive the greatest migration of refugees in history. But for a few nations, climate change will present an unparalleled opportunity, as the planet’s coldest regions become more temperate. There is plenty of reason to think that those places will also receive an extraordinary influx of people displaced from the hottest parts of the world as the climate warms. Human migration, historically, has been driven by the pursuit of prosperity even more so than it has by environmental strife. With climate change, prosperity and habitability — haven and economic opportunity — will soon become one and the same.

And no country may be better positioned to capitalize on climate change than Russia. Russia has the largest land mass by far of any northern nation. It is positioned farther north than all of its South Asian neighbors, which collectively are home to the largest global population fending off displacement from rising seas, drought and an overheating climate. Like Canada, Russia is rich in resources and land, with room to grow. Its crop production is expected to be boosted by warming temperatures over the coming decades even as farm yields in the United States, Europe and India are all forecast to decrease. And whether by accident or cunning strategy or, most likely, some combination of the two, the steps its leaders have steadily taken — planting flags in the Arctic and propping up domestic grain production among them — have increasingly positioned Russia to regain its superpower mantle in a warmer world.

While we ignore the consequences of climate change the Russians are preparing for their day of ascension…

Will we wake up in time?  Or will we try to snooze our way through the coming crisis?
