Closing Thought–26Jan21

Looks like the whole secession thing is becoming popular again…..

It was an idea that has made the rounds in the past……

Texas recently has taken the lead……I wrote about the idea in the state….https://lobotero.com/2021/01/06/secession-again/

A silly idea but it is not limited to Texas……

Washington Examiner reported that the chairman of the Wyoming Republican Party floated the idea of secession to form a neo-confederacy consisting of Republican-voting states.

“Wyoming GOP Chairman Frank Eathorne suggested the idea toWar Room Pandemic podcast host and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon in a weekend interview focused on the decision by Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-ranked Republican in the House, to vote in favor of impeaching Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection related to the deadly riot that took place at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6,” reported Mike Brest.

Eathorne told Bannon, a longtime adviser to Trump currently under indictment for an alleged border wall scam, “We need to focus on the fundamentals … Many of these Western states have the ability to be self-reliant, and we’re keeping eyes on Texas too and their consideration of possible secession. Now, they have a different state constitution than we do as far as wording, but it is something that we’re all paying attention to.”

I say let them go!

They will be begging to return in short order….once they lose the protection of the US and the benefits of being part of the country they will reconsider this ill-advised idea.

As I say often…”Can’t Fix Stupid”!

Biden And Medicare For All

In this age of a pandemic and worsening health problems that we Americans are facing…..we need solutions….and soon.

One idea that is gaining popular with the people of the US….not so much with corporate America or the leaders they have in their pockets…..is the plan for a Medicare For Al….hence forth to be known as M4A…..

Once I read the idea I was on board and wrote several posts in defense of the idea….

https://lobotero.com/2019/03/04/medicare-for-all/

https://lobotero.com/2020/03/04/medicare-for-all-again/

Now that we have a new president and he has the chance to solidify a legacy by embracing M4A…..but that would be a push for him…..https://lobotero.com/2020/03/31/biden-and-health-care/

Now is the perfect time for Biden to embrace M4A….

But in case you are not sure what this program would cover…..I can help…..

https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/1129/text

It appears that M4A is popular atl east with the Dems….

Democrats overwhelmingly threw their support behind “Medicare for All,” according to data released Tuesday from a Hill-HarrisX poll.

Increasing support for the national health insurance program may be linked to the coronavirus pandemic. Many businesses have closed permanently, leaving their former employees with no employment-based coverage. Medicare for All, which would create a nationwide single-payer health insurance plan for all Americans, was the cornerstone of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ suspended presidential campaign. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has not embraced the Medicare for All platform although many of Biden’s potential voters support the program.

Out of 948 registered voters who participated in the poll, 87 percent of Democrats said they were in favor of Medicare for All. Independent voters also leaned towards the idea with 69 percent supporting the concept. Less than half of the Republicans surveyed agreed with the idea with only 43 percent supporting providing health insurance to all Americans.

Since the program is so popular is there a way for Biden to get onto the bandwagon?

Advocates for Medicare for All have won the policy debate — a recent study from the Congressional Budget Office shows again that single-payer saves money, controls costs, and covers everybody, including for long-term care. There is tremendous popular support for Medicare for All. But we lack the backing among enough elected officials to win politically, including from the newly inaugurated President Joe Biden.

Our task is not to simply convince Biden to change his views on Medicare for All, but to change the political waters in which that view holds sway. Our task is to create the political will to topple the for-profit healthcare industry, which means building a popular movement that can vilify its business model, expose its corruption of policymaking and shine a light on its financial influence over elected officials, who should similarly be exposed and challenged electorally for protecting an inhumane system.

But will Biden get on the wagon?

His statement earlier is that would not…..

President Joe Biden suggested that he would veto the universal health-care legislation known as “Medicare for All” championed by his Democratic presidential primary rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, citing costs.

“Nancy Pelosi gets a version of it through the House of Representatives. It comes to your desk. Do you veto it?” MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell asked Biden during an interview Monday night.

“I would veto anything that delays providing the security and the certainty of health care being available now,” Biden responded. “If they got that through in by some miracle or there’s an epiphany that occurred and some miracle occurred that said, ‘OK, it’s passed,’ then you got to look at the cost.”

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/10/biden-says-he-wouldd-veto-medicare-for-all-as-coronavirus-focuses-attention-on-health.html

Which I believe he would do just that.

His legacy here will be that of enabling the health industry to continue their profit taking and setting the conditions on which Americans will get so little heath care.

South China Sea Gets Hotter

We have a new president and it is time for me to return to my main focus of this blog….international situations and conflict.

For years now the South China Sea has been a region of contention……China claims islands….other countries as well think a bunch of island belong to them…..the US has responded to this possible threat by sending a naval group to patrol the region.

A U.S. aircraft carrier group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt has entered the South China Sea to promote “freedom of the seas”, the U.S. military said on Sunday, at a time when tensions between China and Taiwan have raised concern in Washington.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement the strike group entered the South China Sea on Saturday, the same day Taiwan reported a large incursion of Chinese bombers and fighter jets into its air defence identification zone in the vicinity of the Pratas Islands.

The U.S. military said the carrier strike group was in the South China Sea, a large part of which is claimed by China, to conduct routine operations “to ensure freedom of the seas, build partnerships that foster maritime security”.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-southchinasea-usa-idUSKBN29T05J

China has now made the region a bit more dangerous.

China’s legislature passed a law on Friday that gives its coast guard more freedom to fire on foreign vessels. According to the text of the law released by China’s Xinhua, it aims to safeguard “national sovereignty, security and maritime rights.”

The law allows China’s Coast Guard to take “all necessary means”, including the use of weapons, to stop or prevent threats from foreign vessels. The law will allow the coast guard to stop and board vessels in China’s “jurisdictional waters.”

China’s Coast Guard is relatively young, having formed in 2013 after previously being part of Beijing’s People’s Armed Police. The new law gives China’s Coast Guard an authority most country’s coast guards have. Still, the law is significant because of China’s maritime disputes in the South and East China Seas, disputes that the US has involved itself in.

In the South China Sea, Beijing and several Southeast Asian countries have overlapping claims. Since 2015, the US began sailing warships near Chinese-claimed waters in the region, maneuvers that were stepped up during the Trump administration and will likely continue under President Biden.

In the East China Sea, China and Japan both claim the Senkaku Islands, known as the Diaoyus in China. Japan currently administers the uninhabited islands. Chinese coast guard vessels were recently spotted in waters near the Senkakus, which drew condemnation from Tokyo.

After winning the November presidential election, Joe Biden assured Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide that the Senkakus are covered under the US-Japan mutual defense treaty.

Back in October, then-National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien announced that the US Coast Guard was deploying ships to the Western Pacific. It’s not clear how far west the cutters have sailed, but O’Brien cited Beijing as the reason for the deployment, so there’s a chance the US Coast Guard can cross paths with China’s coast guard.

All it would take is one incident and this could become another endless conflict that we have found this nation fighting.

‘Insurrection’ News

The events on 06 January 2021 has been labelled an ‘insurrection’ and the situation is rolling along with the FBI identifying those criminals and arresting and charging them with a wide array of charges.

And the conspiracy to commit insurrection is running deeper than many of us thought.

Of course the words of Trump are most mentioned then followed by the antics of congressional members like Sen Cruz and Hawley……who face ethic charges…..

(Newser) – Republican Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz face an ethics investigation over their roles in fighting the certification of President Biden’s electoral victory and the Jan. 6 rally that turned into an attack on the US Capitol. “By proceeding with their objections to the electors after the violent attack, Senators Cruz and Hawley lent legitimacy to the mob’s cause and made future violence more likely,” a group of Democrats wrote Thursday to the Senate Ethics Committee. Hawley, of Missouri, called the complaint in a statement “a flagrant abuse of the Senate ethics process and a flagrant attempt to exact partisan revenge,” Politico reports. Cruz, of Texas, didn’t issue a response. Seven Democratic senators signed the letter.

The Democrats want the committee to look into whether Hawley and Cruz encouraged the mob attack on the Capitol; coordinated with organizers of the rally supporting President Trump that preceded the riot; received donations from anyone or any group that also supported the pro-Trump rally; and “engaged in criminal conduct or unethical or improper behavior.” Both Republican senators have faced demands to resign from the Senate since they voted against accepting the electoral results of Arizona and Pennsylvania that night. Hawley and Cruz have said they didn’t incite the riot, and both denounced the violence after it happened, per CNBC.

The new leader of the Senate, Schumer, is being pressured to punish those two Senators…..

Progressive advocacy group MoveOn is calling on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to deny committee seats to Sens. Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and other Republicans who attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and incited the violent siege of the U.S. Capitol Building earlier this month.

“Elected officials like Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and other senators who sought to use their power to promote the big lie to overturn the results of the 2020 election—and who incited a deadly insurrection—have no place in the U.S. Senate and most certainly should not be rewarded for their deadly attacks on democracy with seats leading important committees in the next Congress,” Rahna Epting, MoveOn’s executive director, said in a statement late Thursday.

“Senate Majority Leader Schumer must work to ensure that any power-sharing agreement with Mitch McConnell keeps these insurrectionist senators from committee positions where they can use their influence to further undermine our democracy,” Epting continued. “Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and their allies in the Senate must be held accountable for their attacks on our democracy.”

Good idea….but it does NOT go far enough.  There needs to be punishment And accountability.

It seems that new breaking news comes out every day……

Here is a scary thought…..about 20% of those that participated in the insurrection have military experience.

Nearly 1 in 5 people charged in connection to the violent Jan. 6 raid on the U.S. Capitol has some form of a military history, according to an NPR analysis.

Of the more than 140 individuals charged in the attack thus far, at least 27, or nearly 20 percent, have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military, NPR found.

The numbers are startling as only 7 percent of all American adults are military veterans, according to the Census Bureau.

https://thehill.com/policy/defense/535321-nearly-one-in-five-people-charged-in-capitol-riot-have-military-history

Organizers of the Trump rally prior to the breach were paid handsomely…..

Former President Trump’s campaign had paid out more than $2.7 million to several individuals and firms behind the Jan. 6 rally in Washington that devolved into a violent insurrection at the Capitol, the Center for Responsive Politics reported on Friday.

Several organizers listed on the event permit granted by the National Parks Service (NPS) and posted online by the Center for Responsive Politics previously held positions within the Trump campaign or had ties to those who did.

Federal Election Commission filings show that the former president’s reelection campaign made payments to several of those individuals through Nov. 23, the most recent day for which financial disclosures are available.

We all are appalled at the events on 06 January and most of us want them punished and future ‘incidents’ quelled before they do any damage to the nation.

Well Biden has seemed to make ‘domestic terrorism’ a policy focus.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced that President Biden ordered three US intelligence agencies to review the threat of “domestic violent extremism.”

Since pro-Trump demonstrators stormed the US Capitol building on January 6th, calls to combat “domestic terrorism” have been growing. Before January 6th, Biden’s transition team had said they were planning to pass laws against domestic terrorism, and the Capitol incident has made it a top priority.

“The January 6th assault on the Capitol and the tragic deaths and destruction that occurred underscored what we have long known. The rise of domestic violent extremism is a serious and growing national security threat,” Psaki said.

Psaki went on to outline the first steps the Biden administration is taking. She said Biden ordered the newly confirmed Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines to conduct a threat assessment along with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

Psaki said the assessment will produce a “fact-based analysis on which we can shape policy.” In addition to the intelligence analysis, the National Security Council is being tasked with finding ways to disrupt “extremist networks.”

It’s not clear if the assessment will lead to US government agencies being granted new authorities to counter domestic terrorism.

Congress is onboard with prioritizing domestic threats. Earlier this week, the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act was introduced in the House with bipartisan sponsors. The bill would establish offices within the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and the Justice Department to combat domestic terrorism.
