Secession Again?

Closing Thought–06Jan21

Keeping with the tone of the day……

WE all know about the last time parts of the US decided to secede and it did not end well for those that broke away…….and the calls for secession again became loud…..https://lobotero.com/2012/12/03/secession-fever-2/

Then the electoral college went and elected the provocateur Trump in 2016 and the calls for secession grew even louder….championed by the man elected to the office…..https://lobotero.com/2018/04/29/secession-is-still-popular/

During Trump’s tenure as president the calls for secession and civil war have grown at an alarming pace……and now that he has lost the 2020 election and he and his minions try to overturn the vote the calls again are increasing for secession the possibility of a civil war…..

Right-wing figures online are now toying with the ultimate act of resistance against Joe Biden’s win over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election: secession and civil war. The  idea has picked up steam in the past few days, thanks to a boost it got from talk radio host and Medal of Freedom recipient Rush Limbaugh.

Limbaugh made waves on Wednesday when he said, “I actually think that we’re trending toward secession.” I see more and more people asking what in the world do we have in common with the people who live in, say, New York?”

Limbaugh also added: “I see a lot of bloggers … have written extensively about how distant and separated and how much more separated our culture is becoming politically and that it can’t go on this way. ” There cannot be a peaceful coexistence of two completely different theories of life, theories of government, theories of how we manage our affairs. We can’t be in this dire a conflict without something giving somewhere along the way.”

But after Limbaugh’s comment gained media attention, he claimed on Thursday that he was not in any sense advocating for secession or civil war. Rather, he said, he was just describing something that he’d been hearing about from others, because of how divided the country is.

Then there are those state senators that want to use the military to annul the election by declaring martial law…..

… two Republican state senators, Bob Steinburg of North Carolina and Amanda F. Chase of Virginia, through public Facebook posts and in subsequent interviews, have declared that President Donald Trump should suspend civil liberties and declare martial law in order to stay in power. Both state senators have repeated Trump’s baseless claims of widespread election fraud and various other right-wing conspiracies. Steinburg was reelected to the statehouse this past year, while Chase is running for governor of Virginia.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Steinburg reiterated comments made earlier this month by retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, suggesting Trump invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807, deploy soldiers and suspend habeas corpus. In an interview with WRAL Tuesday night, Steinburg alleged he was just “putting out there options that others say still remain on the table,” although he later added that he would welcome a coup, insinuating a vast conspiracy was working against Trump.

Will these traitorous dicks get their way?

Will we have another civil war?

Or is it just cowards and the spineless venting and pouting because their dictator lost?

Think about a little American history…the Hartford Convention…..

U.S. history, a secret meeting in Hartford, Connecticut, of Federalist delegates from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont who were dissatisfied with Pres. James Madison’s mercantile policies and the progress of the War of 1812 (“Mr. Madison’s War”), as well as long resentful over the balance of political power that gave the South, particularly Virginia, effective control of the national government.

The more extreme delegates raised the possibility of secession, but others sought only to dictate amendments to the Constitution that would protect their interests. Ultimately, the convention adopted a strong states’ rights position and expressed its grievances in a series of resolutions against military conscription and commercial regulations (along with some stringent criticisms of Madison’s administration) that were agreed to on January 4, 1815.

So you see the idea of secession of the 1850-60s is not a mew concept to Americans…

06Jan21–A Day In Infamy

We had one when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and now the next Day Of Infamy is upon us…..Pearl was an attack on the country from a foreign entity…..this time it will an attack on the very structure of our republic.

06 January is the date that the Congress meets to certify the electoral win for Joe Biden but there are some within our government, that will work to deny the win by Biden….

The latest traitor to the American system is Se. Ted Cruz….along with 11 other GOP Senators…..

Acknowledging that their effort to keep President-elect Joe Biden from assuming office is unlikely to succeed, 11 Republican senators committed anyway Saturday to voting to reject Electoral College votes on Wednesday. The group said in a joint statement that a commission should be appointed by Congresss “to conduct an emergency 10-day audit of the election returns in the disputed states,” the Hill reports. Once the states have the findings, their legislatures could hold a special session to consider changing their electoral votes. “Accordingly, we intend to vote on Jan. 6 to reject the electors from disputed states as not ‘regularly given’ and ‘lawfully certified'” until the audit is in. The statement was signed by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Steve Daines of Montana, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Mike Braun of Indiana. Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama also were listed.

This is what Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was hoping to avoid, per Axios. Republicans facing reelection in two years now will have to go on record as opposing President Trump’s wishes to fight Biden’s victory or as endorsing the battle cry of election fraud. Many of them already have rejected that notion. “We are not naïve,” the statement issued Saturday said. “We fully expect most if not all Democrats, and perhaps more than a few Republicans, to vote otherwise.” Individual Republicans have said as much. “In the end, I don’t think it changes anything,” Sen. John Thune said. Sen. Ben Sasse said it’s a stunt to help presidential hopefuls win over Trump’s supporters. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri was the first senator to say he’d object; the 11 senators plan to cite more specific grounds for their votes. The announcement of the state-by-state election results will be made in a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.

Then there are those representatives in the House that are part of this circus….like Gohmert (a d/bag from the word go)……

A federal appeals court has thrown out GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert’s last-ditch attempt to subvert President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, his second rejection in two days in the Texas lawmaker’s attempt to empower Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the results.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals gave very short shrift to Gohmert’s legal effort, dismissing it summarily in a one-paragraph opinion issued Saturday evening.

The unsigned decision noted the district court‘s ruling that Gohmert and 11 Arizona Republicans — who would have been electors for President Donald Trump — lacked legal standing to pursue the case.

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/2137193339126/judge-throws-out-gohmert-suit-aimed-at-empowering-pence-to-overturn-2020-election-results

And Gohmert is not alone in the House…..at least 140 GOP representatives will likely vote against the certification of the the Biden win……

At least 140 House Republicans are planning to vote against counting electoral votes that would certify the election for President-elect Joe Biden, two Republican congressmen told CNN

Biden won 306 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed to secure the US presidency, and flipped five states that in 2016 voted for Trump.

https://www.businessinsider.com/140-house-republicans-to-vote-against-biden-electoral-college-confirmation-2020-12

Noe VP Pence has signed onto the silliness and the traitorous actions….

Vice President Mike Pence, who will be presiding over the joint session of Congress on Wednesday and is required to announce Biden as the winner, has endorsed the effort, the New York Times reports. Pence “shares the concerns of millions of Americans about voter fraud and irregularities in the last election,” a statement by his chief of staff says, adding that he “welcomes the efforts of members of the House and Senate to use the authority they have under the law to raise objections and bring forward evidence before the Congress and the American people on Jan. 6th.” A dozen Republican senators have said they’ll object to the electoral results.

President Trump’s team welcomed GOP senators’ plans, per CNBC. “It’s encouraging to see so many patriots step up and demand an investigation into the rampant voter fraud and irregularities we saw on November 3rd,” said Jenna Ellis, senior legal adviser to the campaign. “Our country will love them for it!” Trump tweeted. But the objections have “zero chance of succeeding,” an election law expert wrote on CNN, though they’re nonetheless dangerous. “American democracy cannot survive the losing party refusing to accept defeat,” Joshua A. Douglas said. It’s “an attempt to subvert the will of the voters,” Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar said, pointing out that the votes of millions of Americans have been “counted, recounted, litigated, and state-certified.” Republican Sen. Mitt Romney said, “I could never have imagined seeing these things in the greatest democracy in the world.”

Sorry Mitt but that label may not long apply to the US.

Here’s a thought…..as per the Constitution if Biden cannot be certified as the winner of the 2020 election then…Speaker Pelosi becomes acting president….is that really what the GOP truly wants.

All this is a silly political game to move the narrative forward that there was massive voter fraud….of which there has been NO proof….most any on the minor lapses were committed by GOP operatives not the people voting…..but that somehow is never the story being told.

As far as I am concerned these people are TRAITORS they are violating their oath of office and should suffer dire consequences for their betrayals.

This day too shall live in INFAMY…..the day when elected officials betrayed their country for some minor demagogue.

Hold these toads responsible for their ill-advised actions!

06Jan21–What To Expect

The Georgia election and the the theater of the absurd in the Congress…..

Today is the big day….the day when idiots will try to shanghai the Constitution and attempt to not certify the Biden win of the presidency.

But what can we expect from the Congress/

By now, everyone knows the drill: Congress meets Wednesday to formally certify the electoral college results, with VP Mike Pence scheduled to preside. This is normally routine stuff, with the joint session lasting all of 23 minutes in 2013 and 41 minutes in 2017, notes CBS News. But the 2021 version is expected to last all day and possibly into the wee hours of Thursday morning because of Republican objections on behalf of President Trump. Coverage:

  • The schedule: Congress convenes at 1pm Eastern, and Republicans are expected to challenge the results in six states (Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin), per NBC News. Each objection can be debated up to two hours, meaning it’s possible the session will go longer than 12 hours.
  • The process: States are called one by one, alphabetically. If things follow the normal procedure, a clerk will hand Pence an envelope with the state’s electoral vote count, and he will read it aloud, explains the Washington Post. Congress then votes on whether to accept the results.
  • Objections: For the six states in question, one member from the House and one from the Senate must raise an objection for a challenge to proceed. At that point, the chambers break off to separately debate it. Then each chamber votes on whether to sustain the objection, with a simple majority prevailing, per NPR. It’s possible an objection might clear the Senate, though it’s all but impossible in the Democratic-controlled House. Because an objection must clear both chambers to succeed, the effort is widely seen as a futile one for Trump’s allies.
  • So far: As of Tuesday, we know this of the GOP senators: Ted Cruz will object to Arizona’s results, Josh Hawley to Pennsylvania’s, and Kelly Loeffler to Georgia’s, reports the Post.
  • Pence’s role: President Trump and his allies think otherwise, but an explainer at New York concludes that Pence doesn’t have the power to override results in favor of the president. “According to law and precedent, Pence is confined to the merely administrative chore of opening the certifications state elected officials have sent to Congress, arranging for their tabulation and then noting any challenges to a given state’s announced electors from members of Congress.”

There you have what to expect today…….more on this Day of Infamy next post.

Let the circus begin!

Georgia On My Mind

There has been lots of coverage and speculation over the run-off election in the state of Georgia……it is all about control……

As of this writing one race is too close to call and the other seems like the Dem has won…..

The Associated Press and other outlets called one of the two Senate runoff races in Georgia: Democrat Raphael Warnock beat incumbent Kelly Loeffler, becoming the first Black senator Georgia has ever elected. Democrats must also win the other race, which remained too close to call as of the time of this posting, in order to win control of the chamber. As ballots were being counted, President Trump and his allies were on Twitter making familiar claims. Specifically, that a scheme was underway to, yes, steal the election. “Looks like they are setting up a big ‘voter dump’ against the Republican candidates. Waiting to see how many votes they need?” Trump himself mused. Others in the GOP had similar takes: “Democrats scrounging up votes from mystical places again….,” tweeted Tomi Lahren, while Kayleigh McEnany wondered, “Why are they stopping the vote count in Democrat Chatham county, Georgia? This sounds familiar!”

Trump’s take on the evening had the New York Times‘ numbers guy, Nate Cohn, replying: “DeKalb County (and all Georgia counties) posted the exact number of in-person early votes long before election day. They even posted their names, addresses, etc.” Trump was also tweeting about his own, ostensibly lost, race: “If Vice President @Mike_Pence comes through for us, we will win the Presidency. Many States want to decertify the mistake they made in certifying incorrect & even fraudulent numbers in a process NOT approved by their State Legislatures (which it must be). Mike can send it back!” Meanwhile, observers of the runoff were tentatively noting things also looked good for Democrat Jon Ossoff, though all the votes are not expected to be counted until later Wednesday. Decision Desk HQ had called the race for him in the wee hours of Wednesday, but no other outlets had as of this posting.

Osoff is creeping ahead of Perdue as of this writing.

I await the comments from Donald the Orange and his mindless supporters.

This is gonna be EPIC!

Good News For Some Americans

The pandemic has caused many pains but the most painful is the loss of income…..

The legacy of 2020 will endure in America’s collective memory for many reasons: a deadly pandemic, a vicious presidential election.

It also brought the most severe recession in almost a century, which hurtled millions into poverty and joblessness and created burgeoning inequality.

That financial pain has been concentrated among certain groups, like racial minorities, women, low earners, those without college degrees and workers in the service economy, like restaurant and retail jobs that require face-to-face contact. (These categories often overlap.)

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/01/the-covid-recession-brought-extreme-inequality-in-2020.html

But there is some good news…..at least for some……

A New Year starts and I wish the good news was that the pandemic was slowly winding down but since that is not the case…..irregardless there is some good news for some of our fellow citizens…..wage increases…..

2020 was a devastating year for underpaid frontline workers.

But even in the face of public health and economic crises triggered by Covid-19, the Fight for $15 movement persisted, and now 24 states and 50 municipalities throughout the U.S. are set to raise minimum wages in 2021.

On New Year’s Day, 20 states and 32 cities will increase their minimum wage, with the wage floor in 27 of those jurisdictions reaching or exceeding $15 per hour. The January 1 raises will be followed by another round of wage floor hikes later in 2021, when four additional states and 18 localities will increase their minimum wage, 13 of them to at least $15 per hour.

That’s according to a new report, Raises From Coast to Coast in 2021 (pdf), released Thursday by the National Employment Law Project (NELP), which monitors worker remuneration and advocates for higher minimum wages nationwide.

“Despite the pandemic, the Fight for $15 movement continues to gain strength, with more cities and states than ever before raising their wage floors, including dozens of local jurisdictions raising wages to $15 or more,” said Yannet Lathrop, senior researcher and policy analyst with NELP and author of the report.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/12/31/raises-coast-coast-2021-new-year-higher-minimum-wages-24-states-and-50

Too bad it is not ALL American wage earners…hopefully that will be future benefit…..

I hope this helps some of you to make a better life for your family….as they say…”every little bit helps”….
