Closing Thought–02Mar20

Who was Emmet Till?

He was a black teenager tortured and lynched in Mississippi in 1955……and finally the US government has voted to make lynching a hate crime after 65 years and 200 attempts to make it a hate crime…..

Sixty-five years after 14-year-old Emmett Till was lynched in Mississippi, the House has approved legislation designating lynching as a hate crime under federal law, the AP reports. The Emmett Till Antilynching Act, introduced by Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush, comes 120 years after Congress first considered anti-lynching legislation and after dozens of similar efforts were defeated. The measure was approved 410 to 4 on Wednesday. The Senate unanimously passed virtually identical legislation last year, although that bill wasn’t named for Till. President Trump is expected to sign the bill, which designates lynching as a federal hate crime punishable by up to life in prison, a fine, or both. One of the four who voted no, Republican Ted Yoho, tells CNN he did so because the bill represents “overreach” by the federal government, interfering with state’s rights.

The other “no” votes came from Republicans Louie Gohmert and Thomas Massie and independent Justin Amash. Rush, a Democrat whose Chicago district includes Till’s former home, said the bill will belatedly achieve justice for Till and more than 4,000 other lynching victims, most of them African Americans. Till, who was black, was brutally tortured and killed in 1955 after a white woman accused him of grabbing her and whistling at her in a Mississippi grocery store. The killing shocked the country and stoked the civil rights movement. Congress has failed to pass anti-lynching legislation nearly 200 times, starting with a bill introduced in 1900 by North Carolina Rep. George Henry White, the only black member of Congress at the time. “This justice is long overdue,” said Sen. Kamala Harris, who along with Cory Booker and Tim Scott co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill.

All I can say it is about goddamn time!

This news in conjunction with the news that Minnesota voted down the law that allowed slavery as a punishment.

My take on the news…..https://lobotero.com/2020/02/24/closing-thought-24feb20/

Those Desert Rats

World War Two in North Africa gave the world some unlikely heroes…the Desert Rats of Tobruk……

The term “Rats of Tobruk,” a moniker applied by the Nazi propagandist broadcaster William Joyce (“Lord Haw-Haw”), referred more generally to any of the Allied troops who defended Tobruk, Libya. Tobruk, a key deepwater port city, had been captured on January 22, 1941, by the Desert Rats and the 6th Australian Division as part of a major Allied offensive that saw Italian forces under Rodolfo Graziani effectively wiped out. A counteroffensive launched by Rommel in March enjoyed spectacular success, negating most of the Allied territorial gains, with the notable exception of Tobruk.

Some say that the North African forces were the beginnings of the special operations forces……I disagree……

But before the “Rats” of Tobruk there were others also called the Desert Rats…..but these “Rats” were in the Great War (WW1)….

Contrary to popular belief the special forces began with the these men……

Striking where the enemy is weakest and melting away into the darkness before he can react.

• Never confronting a stronger force directly, but willing to use audacity and surprise to confound and demoralize an opponent.

• Operations driven by good intelligence, area knowledge, mobility, speed, firepower, and detailed planning executed by a few specialists with indigenous warriors…

…this is unconventional warfare.

Here is the story of one of its earliest First World War practitioners…

2020 Another One Bites The Dust #16 & #17

The first four voting competitions are in the bag with South Carolina being the last and it would be the last chance for Tom Steyer…

His poor showing told this candidate that it was time to save his cash and leave the trail…..

Third place wasn’t good enough: Billionaire Tom Steyer ended his 2020 campaign Saturday night after the results in the South Carolina primary became clear. As the Hill notes, Steyer invested large in South Carolina, but he finished well behind winner Joe Biden and couldn’t take second place from Bernie Sanders. With more than 60% of returns in, Steyer had 11.5% of the vote, behind Biden (49.7%) and Sanders (19.3%). Steyer has never held elective office and campaigned instead on his business experience, notes the Washington Post. He spent an estimated $150 million of his fortune on the race, most heavily in South Carolina and Nevada, where he finished fifth.

Steyer will not be alone….Mayor Pete is also quitting while the quitting is good…..he has about as much support in the black community as I have among Righties…..time for him to go…..he will sit back and try to make the case for a position in the next presidency……as usual it is about him not the country or the party…..a typical centrist move.

Democrat Pete Buttigieg is ending his campaign for president. Three people with knowledge of Buttigieg’s decision tell the AP he is informing campaign staff. They were not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. His campaign says Buttigieg will speak Sunday night in South Bend, Indiana. Buttigieg rose to the field’s top tier but failed to notch enough wins in the critical early states necessary to keep his bid moving forward.

The millennial, Afghan War veteran, and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, defied expectations in a field of better-known candidates for months while becoming the first openly gay top contender for a major party nomination. “Mayor Pete” burst onto the scene with a blitz of national media a year ago and impressive fundraising. He leaned hard into a next-generation message of urgency on pressing issues while preaching a message of hope and inclusion.

The Dem field gets smaller and smaller…..some are hanging on by their finger tips and next Tuesday’s Super vote should help show some of the other candidates the exit sign.

My candidate is still in there but I fear her days are numbered….I will continue to support her until the day she decides to exit and then I will look for a new place to put my support.

Until that day I shall let Queen show Mr. Steyer the exit……

Who’s next?

More to come.

In Saner Thought

It is another Monday and another quiz. I may re-evaluate this feature after the first of the year. Since it is not too damn popular, I may discontinue it. I was hoping that it would help educate the people on history, politics and such, but so far it has not lived up to my expectations. The first meeting of the Inkwell 4 in january will determine its fate.

Enough whining and I shall move on to the question.

In politics, who were the “Half-Breeds”?

Not especially difficult, but will require a little thought. Good luck and good hunting.

That Afghan Peace Deal

After much anticipation from us foreign policy wonks a peace deal has been inked between the Taleban and them US…..

US officials and Taliban representatives have signed an agreement after months of negotiations in Qatar’s capital that is aimed at ending the United States’s longest war, fought in Afghanistan since 2001.

Saturday’s agreement, signed in Doha in the presence of leaders from Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, will pave the way for the US to gradually withdraw its troops.

(aje.com)

This is great news…..but in case the media does not offer the conditions/wording of the peace deal I will help you out.

A comprehensive peace agreement is made of four parts:

1. Guarantees and enforcement mechanisms that will prevent the use of the soil of Afghanistan by any group or individual against the security of the United States and its allies.

2. Guarantees, enforcement mechanisms, and announcement of a timeline for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Afghanistan.

3. After the announcement of guarantees for a complete withdrawal of foreign forces and timeline in the presence of international witnesses, and guarantees and the announcement in the presence of international witnesses that Afghan soil will not be used against the security of the United States and its allies, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan which is not recognized by the United States as a state and is known as the Taliban will start intra-Afghan negotiations with Afghan sides on March 10, 2020, which corresponds to Rajab 15, 1441 on the Hijri Lunar calendar and Hoot 20, 1398 on the Hijri Solar calendar.

4. A permanent and comprehensive ceasefire will be an item on the agenda of the intra-Afghan dialogue and negotiations. The participants of intra-Afghan negotiations will discuss the date and modalities of a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire, including joint implementation mechanisms, which will be announced along with the completion and agreement over the future political roadmap of Afghanistan.

But if you need to see the entire wording of the agreement then I can help here as well…..https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/02/taliban-peace-agreement-200229134403285.html

I think this is a good thing…..after 2 decades any way home for our troops is a good thing.

The group BringOurTroopsHome is also pleased with the deal….

Sgt. Dan McKnight, Afghanistan war veteran and founder of BringOurTroopsHome.US, Saturday praised President Donald Trump’s announcement of a peace agreement with Taliban forces that could lead to total withdrawal of U.S. forces in Afghanistan some time next year. The announcement came a day after McKnight blasted Congresswoman Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., for attempting to publicly undercut Trump’s efforts.

“After nearly two decades, we’re grateful that our Commander-in-Chief stood with the American people and with America’s fighting men and women and their families,” McKnight said, “and ignored the wolf-crying demands of chicken hawks such as Liz Cheney, whose family profiteered from hundreds of millions of dollars in military contracts, literally making money off wars they sent other people to fight.”

“The demands Ms. Cheney tried to dictate to the president earlier this week were designed to do one thing,” McKnight said, “prevent him from keeping his campaign promise to end the longest war in American history and bring our troops home. Thank you for listening to the American people, Mr. President, and ignoring Chicken Hawk Cheney.”

Now it is time to start searching for ways to end the other endless wars we are still fighting.
