Closing Thoughts–06Aug19

Some good news from the Korean War….more than two dozen MIAs have been identified by the remains returned by North Korea….

Defense Department officials have identified 25 more missing service members from the cases of remains turned over by North Korean officials last year, a major advance for dozens of families who have waited decades for closure in the deaths of their loved ones.

The identifications were first announced by Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday afternoon and later confirmed by officials at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency during their annual briefing to families of the Korean War, held in Washington.

On Friday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the news “A promise kept from the agreement between (North Korean) Chairman Kim (Jong Un) and President Donald Trump … to return all of our fallen heroes.”

This excellent news for the families of these fallen heroes….may they now get the closure that they have waited so long to obtain.

This is one of the few positive things to come out of the dealings with Kim and North Korea…..these families deserved to know the fate of their loved ones.

06 August 1945

The time is 0815 hrs!

And the Atomic Age begins!

74 years ago today the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima…..and for the first time a theory became a weapon and a new age had begun.

President Harry S Truman, announcing the news from the cruiser, USS Augusta, in the mid-Atlantic, said the device was more than 2,000 times more powerful than the largest bomb used to date.

An accurate assessment of the damage caused has so far been impossible due to a huge cloud of impenetrable dust covering the target. Hiroshima is one of the chief supply depots for the Japanese army.

The bomb was dropped from an American B-29 Superfortress, known as Enola Gay, at 0815 local time. The plane’s crew say they saw a column of smoke rising and intense fires springing up.

Now as the world marks the release of this weapon of destruction a Declaration has been issued…

Around the world today, we see self-centered nationalism in ascendance, tensions heightened by international exclusivity and rivalry, with nuclear disarmament at a standstill. What are we to make of these global phenomena? Having undergone two world wars, our elders pursued an ideal — a world beyond war. They undertook to construct a system of international cooperation. Should we not now recall and, for human survival, strive for that ideal world? I ask this especially of you, the youth who have never known war but will lead the future. For this purpose, I ask you to listen carefully to the hibakusha of Aug. 6, 1945.

A woman who was five then has written this poem:

Little sister with a bowl cut / head spraying blood

embraced by Mother / turned raging Asura

For years I have read and written about the possibility that this weapon may have not been needed……now the American Conservative has written an article on this attack…..

August 6 usually doesn’t make headlines in America. But mark the day by what absence demonstrates: On the 72nd anniversary of the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and some 140,000 non-combatants, there is no call for reflection in the United States.

In an era when pundits routinely worry about America’s loss of moral standing because of an offish, ill-mannered president, the only nation in history to employ a weapon of mass destruction on an epic scale, against an undefended civilian population, otherwise shrugs off the significance of an act of immorality.

But it is August 6, and so let us talk about Hiroshima.

Don’t Whitewash the Hiroshima Bombing

With the rise of nuclear desires the possibility of something horrible could be unleashed but let us hope that this series of destructive power should never be used on humans again.

More Of The Gun Debate

If only that were true….a gun debate.

I wrote about the gun violence over this past weekend and I asked several questions……https://lobotero.com/2019/08/05/trump-on-gun-control/

I asked what if anything our dear beloved supreme leader would have to say or do…..I got my answer…..

The president on Monday spoke out against the weekend shootings in Texas and Ohio, first on Twitter and then in a 10-minute address from the Diplomatic Reception Room. Trump tweeted in part that “Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying…. ….this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!” CNN reports he did not mention background checks in his subsequent scripted remarks, where he spoke out against the internet, social media, and “the gruesome and grizzly video games that are now commonplace.” The president said that “in one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul.”

In the AP‘s view, Trump didn’t get specific about solutions and “signaled he would oppose large-scale gun control efforts pushed by Democrats,” which the AP saw as evident in his comment that “mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun.” The Washington Post, however, heard a number of “possible steps,” including a mention of “red-flag laws” designed to better surface mentally ill people who should be barred from buying guns. One other comment that gained attention: his closing remarks, in which USA Today reports Trump mistakenly stated, “May God bless the memory of those who died in Toledo. May God protect them.”

Dude the attack was in Dayton….not in Toledo.  I thought he watched the news.

Ever noticed how stiff and uncomfortable Trump appears when he has to stick to script?

We now have what Trump will do to prevent this from happening again…..control video games…..

Video games are partly to blame for mass shootings, Donald Trump has said.

Games that “celebrate violence” should be discouraged and made harder to buy, the president suggested.

“We must stop the glorification of violence in our society,” he said during a speech in the wake of a spate of shootings. “This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace.

“It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. We must stop or substantially reduce this, and it has to begin immediately.”

That ought to make a difference.  The country can sleep well tonight.

Yet another cop out by a Repub on gun violence…..as usual and expected.

“It’s like this speech was written in an alternative universe where none of the things Trump did over the last month happened,” tweeted HuffPost reporter Igor Bobic.

Trump delivered the speech—his first public appearance since the tragedies—Monday morning from the White House flanked by Vice President Mike Pence. “In one voice our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy,” Trump said.

“These sinister ideologies must be defeated,” he continued. “Hate has no place in America.”

(Common Dreams)

But wait!  Trump is already trying to hold gun debate hostage…..

“We can never forget them, and those many who came before them,” Trump tweeted about the victims of the weekend’s carnage. “Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!”

(Vice News)

Does not take a Repub to start waffling does it?

Homeboy Trump screwed up the city and then there is old Uncle Joe Biden who screwed up the state….

The Washington Examiner reports Joe Biden made a bigger goof at a San Diego fundraiser Sunday night when he referenced “the tragic events in Houston today and also in Michigan the day before.”

In usual fashion Biden avoided offering any real solutions for the problem…..lip service is NOT a solution…as we well know after decades upon decades of violence and death.

This is exhausting.

I am finished.

The Return To Saudi Arabia

The big news in the US media was that Saudi women can now leave home without a male guardian…..and just months ago women are allowed to drive….but that is not the news that needs reporting.

I wish this was a sequel to Lawrence of Arabia but sadly it is not ….it is the return of the large numbers of American troops into the kingdom of Saudi Arabia….for their protection (again).

In 1990 history was made….US Troops stationed in Saudi Arabia….

It was big news. U.S. military forces streamed into Saudi Arabia in response to a supposedly serious threat to the kingdom’s eastern region. The American troops were invited by nervous Saudi royals; it wasn’t an American invasion per se. Everything unfolded smoothly at first; still, the consequences would be severe for the United States. Pick up the latest Military Times, or any other news source, and the story will seem recent, if not worthy of any special attention or alarm. Indeed, US troops are headed into Saudi Arabia right now, but that’s not the situation described above.

No, that happened in August 1990, in response to the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq—a nation, few remembered, that the US had previously backed in its aggressive war with Iran (1980-88). The kingdom then served as a launch point for the U.S.-led Persian Gulf War (1991) which drove the Iraqis from tiny Kuwait. American soldiers pulled out of Saudi Arabia just over a decade later, in 2003. Now they’re rolling back in. History, as it’s said to do, seems to be repeating itself.

This time, however, the ostensible threat to Saudi Arabia comes from naughty Iran, the American national security state’s current favorite exaggerated villain. And, of course, Iran—unlike our onetime “partners” in Iraq—hasn’t invaded anybody. Thus, the US troop infusion is more preemptive than reactive. It’s no matter; few Americans (or even most media/political elites) seem to notice.

US Troops Are Back in Saudia Arabia – This Will End Badly

Dear Saudi monarchs:  Just give a call to your good buddies Trump and Jared the weasel and all will be yours…..and poof more wasted American taxpayer dollars.

Let’s be honest…this has nothing to do with the flow oil….it is all about the criminals in the Kingdom monarchy that are afraid of losing their station and wealth…and of course the first thing they do is turn to the US wjo has been training and arming the Saudis for decades and yet they are incapable of defending themselves……can anyone say waste money?

Also keep in mind that the first group of troops in Saudi in 1990 is what lead Osama down the terrorist path.
