Closing Thought–15Aug19

It is that time again….the approach of another tiresome exercise we call an election. Since it is that time again the “S” word is being passed around like a cheap hooker….of course the GOP will use it as some sort of grade for the Dems……..even that person in the White House is using it liberally (no pun intended)……

But did you know that our Beloved Supreme Demagogue back in 2009 back during that crash of the markets had offered a solution of our problem…nationalization……

Though it surely won’t matter to his legion of supporters, back in 2009, business mogul Donald Trump supported the bailing out of the banks. Not just that, he suggested he was comfortable with the national government taking them over ― at least temporarily ― as a means of market stabilization.

The comments came during an interview with CNN’s Larry King in April 2009. King, who has since left the network, asked Trump what he thought of the new president, that being Barack Obama. Trump replied that he “really like[d] him” ― which, for any other current Republican presidential candidate, would probably be considered apostasy in its own right. But then Trump went further:

You do realize that some sort of nationalization is par for socialism, right?

Does that make His Majesty a socialist?

He is a person with absolutely NO principles……all he has is his showmanship after years of reality TV, the popularity of the mindless…..he will say whatever gets him attention….personally I have NO use for egocentric d/bags….and even less use for a pretend “genius”who went to the best schools and made Daddy proud.

Call It “Domestic Terrorism”!

The last round of mass shootings and the media has once again gone to great lengths to try and label them as “Domestic Terrorist” acts.  (Another in the news as I ready this for post)

The media is all over this terminology…..pundits are spending countless hours making the case for it.

The problem is there is NO unified definition of what a domestic terrorist act details.

A good place to start is here…..

The number of bereaved families and friends of those massacred by white terrorists in the United States tragically continues to expand. Within the last year alone bodies riddled with the bullets of military-style weapons lay strewn on the streets of large cities like Pittsburgh and El Paso to small towns like Poway and Gilroy. Fueled by anti-Semitic and anti-Hispanic rhetoric, the paranoid projections and racist rhetoric of white nationalism and white supremacy have been weaponized into white terrorism.

Yet white terrorism also stalks those seeking refuge at our southern border. Imagine a distraught mother, reeling from the murder of her child. With other young children at risk, she decides to begin a perilous journey to escape any further violence. Because she hopes to prevent being attacked on the long trek, she joins with others, equally at risk. Having only a vague hope of joining distant relatives once she arrives at her destination, she and her children withstand the many deprivations over the long haul. Finally, arriving at what she has been told is a land of refuge, her children are ripped from her care. She, in turn, is taken to an overcrowded caged facility where she finds hundreds of others languishing in deplorable conditions.

White Terrorism

That said….why is this act of terrorism so difficult?

The best is from the Patriot Act…..remember that?

Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act (Pub. L. No. 107-52) expanded the definition of terrorism to cover “”domestic,”” as opposed to international, terrorism. A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act “dangerous to human life” that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping. Additionally, the acts have to occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States and if they do not, may be regarded as international terrorism.

Section 802 does not create a new crime of domestic terrorism. However, it does expand the type of conduct that the government can investigate when it is investigating “terrorism.” The USA PATRIOT Act expanded governmental powers to investigate terrorism, and some of these powers are applicable to domestic terrorism.

The definition of domestic terrorism is broad enough to encompass the activities of several prominent activist campaigns and organizations. Greenpeace, Operation Rescue, Vieques Island and WTO protesters and the Environmental Liberation Front have all recently engaged in activities that could subject them to being investigated as engaging in domestic terrorism.

Do not mistake my words for some sort of opposition….I want these low life slugs punished but there is the chance that unless we are careful then we could allow the government to go too far….as they have done on so many other issues.

Let me give my readers a couple of things to think about in the dealing with “Domestic Terrorism”…..

Beware Calls in US for Domestic ‘Terrorism’ Laws

As usual the debate and discussion will go on and on…..and the shooting deaths will go on and on……

At least one GOPer has some courage…..Sen. McSally of Arizona….

“For too long we have allowed those who commit heinous acts of domestic terrorism to be charged with related crimes that don’t portray the full scope of their hateful actions,” says GOP Sen. Martha McSally. And so on Wednesday she revealed she plans to do something about it. The Arizona senator released a discussion draft of a new bill that would make domestic terrorism a distinct federal crime—and CBS News explains why that would be necessary: “Domestic terrorism is defined in the US legal code but it is not codified as a law that can be prosecuted.” As such, federal authorities end up charging those suspected of domestic terrorism with other offenses, like hate crimes or weapons possession.

McSally explained the ramifications of that to CBS: It “makes it more difficult to track acts of domestic terror and reduces uniformity in charging and sentencing.” The Arizona Republic reports she’ll introduce the bill once the Senate’s summer recess ends. Politico sees her move as a sign that Republicans are “getting serious” about responding to the recent wave of mass shootings with legislation. It offers context for McSally, too: She’s going head to head with Mark Kelly in the state’s 2020 special election for John McCain’s seat, “a contest in which firearms and fighting crime will loom large.”

How far will this go in a do nothing Senate controlled by cowards and spineless toads?

This is a problem in search of a solution and all concerned are looking in the wrong direction.

SEALs Have A Problem

My first reaction is to say “NO SH*T”…..

I have been writing about their problems for a couple of years now….https://lobotero.com/2019/07/29/what-the-hell-has-happened/

Now the commander of the SEALs has recognized the problem in public…..

The commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command put the words “We have a problem” in bold font. “I don’t know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately,” reads the July 25 letter from Rear Adm. Collin Green, the man in charge of Navy SEALs. The letter obtained by CNN and the New York Times orders commanders to bring forth problems and recommendations for how to ensure ethical and professional behavior following a series of embarrassing incidents, reports CNN. “This is our main effort and my top priority,” Green writes, noting the culture of the force “is being questioned … for good reason” as “some of our subordinate formations have failed to maintain good order and discipline.”

Retired Navy SEAL Eric Deming brought his concerns to Green on Monday. “I got two boys that are old enough, I wouldn’t even let them be part of [the force],” he tells CBS News. An entire SEAL platoon was sent home from Iraq after allegations of sexual assault and unauthorized drinking. Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, accused of war crimes, was convicted of unlawfully posing with an enemy corpse. And two SEALs were implicated in the 2017 hazing death of a Green Beret just months after members of SEAL Team 10 were found to have used cocaine in April 2018. Green says addressing such issues is necessary to “recalibrate our culture and regain our credibility.” The head of all special operations forces, Gen. Richard Clarke, is expected to address ethics in his own letter to the force, per CNN.

Recognizing the problems is not a solution…it can be a good beginning but progress must be made.

Then ask…is it a problem that can be corrected?

I have even heard rumblings that the SEALs should be abolished…and I have read an opinion on this questions…..

I recently saw this question posed on Quora and it made me think. Let me start by answering with my opinion, which is NO. But . . .

It’s interesting to look at the history. Marcinko ended up in Federal Prison after he founded Red Cell. I’ve met the man, did booksignings with him, and even was asked to co-write some of his fiction, which I declined. I just didn’t agree with his leadership philosophy as set out in Rogue Warrior. Essentially it was “Do it MY way” not the Navy’s way. His rules took precedence over the legal rules. To me, that was a recipe for disaster which is bearing fruit now.

I’m not certain but I’ve heard that Admiral McRaven who commanded SOCOM and was a SEAL was assigned to 6 and asked to be transferred out due to the slack command culture.

Should the SEALS be abolished?

I hope that the SEALs find a solution……as long as we continue our adventurism and interventions worldwide we will need the SEALs at full capacity and at the ready.

After writing this draft news came out that the head of the SEALs has ordered an investigation…..

The head of U.S. Special Operations Command is initiating a comprehensive review of all Special Operations Forces culture and ethics, according to a memo he sent to commanders Friday evening.

“Recent incidents have called our culture and ethics into question and threaten the trust placed in us,” Gen. Richard Clarke wrote. The review will focus on recruiting, how new SOF members are selected, how leaders are trained and grown, how the force is educated about ethics and how ethical failures are addressed.

The review comes after a string of high-profile incidents involving Special Operations Forces, which include the Navy SEALs, the Green Berets and the Delta Force, among others.

This is a long time coming….hopefully this will help the SEALs change the course they have been traveling.

The Economy, Stupid!

The markets have had wild swings for about a year now….but with that the profits roll on for the corporations…..the president’s lack of economic knowledge and the wild lies of something good is just making things worse.

And this past week it has come to a head (as they say)…..it happened in the bond markets……

An economic alarm bell has sounded in the US, sending warnings of a possible recession ahead—and sending the Dow plunging 800 points by the end of the day. Yields on 2-year and 10-year Treasury notes inverted early Wednesday, a market phenomenon that shows investors want more in return for short-term government bonds than for long-term bonds. It’s an indication that investors have lost faith in the soundness of the US economy, the AP reports. What appeared to be a slight thaw in trade relations between the US and China that had sent markets sharply higher Tuesday was quickly forgotten, with the Dow opening down 400 points. By 12:30pm ET it was down nearly 650 points; a half-hour later it had plunged 737 points, or 2.6%, reports CNBC. By end of day it was down 800, the S&P 500 was down 86, and the Nasdaq was down 242, per Marketwatch.

CNBC notes that bank stocks like Bank of America and Citigroup have been the big losers today, down 5% and 5.2% respectively, as “it gets tougher for [them] to make a profit lending money in such an environment.” The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note hit 1.622%, falling below the yield of a 2-year, which was 1.634%. The last inversion of this part of the yield curve was in December 2005, two years before a recession brought on by the financial crisis hit. An inversion like the one taking place Wednesday has preceded the last nine recessions dating back to 1955. When a recession might hit, if it does, is a little hazier. Months or even years have passed after an inversion takes place, and before economists can connect the two. Marketwatch notes Wednesday was the Dow’s worst day this year.

Here comes the “R” word…. a “recession”…..some are running worried….

Then there are the multiple lies about China and tariffs….remember when he said China would pay for the tariffs not the American people?  That was the same lie as Mexico would pay for that damn silly border wall.  Don’t forget the lie about all the billions flowing into the coffers of the nation…that was a lie as well…..

If China was gonna to pay and the pain would all be on someone else then why did Trump decide to postpone tariffs until mid-December?

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday backed off his Sept. 1 deadline for 10% tariffs on remaining Chinese imports, delaying duties on cellphones, laptops and other consumer goods, in the hopes of blunting their impact on U.S. holiday sales.

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-trade-china-tariff/trump-backs-off-china-tariff-plan-with-delays-for-cellphones-laptops-idUKKCN1V31CR

Would “impact US holiday sales”…..that should tell you everything you need to know about these pseudo-economic solutions….even if you are not a genius like our Supreme Leader Trump.

Afghan News

You my reader may not get all the information about our longest war and that is why I am here…..I am spotlighting these wars and the foolishness that goes with them and then there are the damn lies to the public.

Recently there was good news.bad news coming out of Afghanistan…..first a peace deal with the Taleban was imminent then it was a failure and kicked to the curb….now it must start all over again….again…..

With hopes for an imminent peace deal in Afghanistan, there were reports that the US military was starting to scale back operations in the country, both limiting combat operations, and advisory missions.

Gen. Scott Miller, the US commander of Afghanistan, insisted the reports are “inaccurate and speculative.” Other officials say there have been no changes to US operations in Afghanistan of any kind.

(antiwar.com)

In the meanwhile Afghanistan is the proving ground for new and improved technology….

18 years into the war, the Pentagon has found Afghanistan as a nice proving ground for a lot of different new military technology, hoping to show that new artificial intelligence efforts and cloud computing can make information-sharing in an occupation more efficient.

The Afghan War has gone really badly, of course, and better than what they had isn’t a tall order. In addition to the computer upgrades they’re getting, US Army forces are also being given pocket-sized drones to deploy for the first time.

The drones, like the AI, aren’t meant as a serious bid to turn around the long lost and almost-over war. Rather, they’re to allow the Pentagon to say these things have been tested in war conditions, for their funding going forward and use in America’s presumptive future wars.

(antiwar.com)

Should we go or should we stay?

The president wants to end the war in Afghanistan.

Since entering office thirty months ago, Donald Trump has looked for ways to exit America’s longest conflict, but has been stymied, repeatedly, on execution.

https://nationalinterest.org/blog/skeptics/trump%E2%80%99s-afghanistan-exit-or-mirage-71016

Come on people…remove head from sand…..and look at the reality of Afghanistan…..

Afghanistan at the moment is a deeply fractured and divided society. The Afghan government is simply too weak, corrupt, and internally divided to extend its writ over the entire country. Afghan security forces are bloodied and beleaguered and don’t possess the independent capacity, manpower, resources, or enablers to defeat insurgency. And as long as the Taliban continue to enjoy a haven across the Durand Line in next-door Pakistan, Kabul will not have a monopoly on violence. Whether we like it or not, the Taliban are an integral part of Afghan society that Washington can’t wish away.

Time for the people of this country to demand an end to this insanity…..Afghanistan will get NO better no matter how long we remain….so cut our losses and declare it a win and bring our war weary troops home for a much deserved rest.
