Closing Thought–02Aug19

I have written ,much about the problems that our veterans are having….their mental health……suicides were on the rise at a time when the VA has its problems as well…..I have written about these problems often….

I revisit my post on veterans suicide because I read that the UK seems to be having a like problem with the veterans…..

A coroner has warned that more military veterans suffering PTSD may take their own lives unless urgent action is taken to improve their care.

Emma Brown, the coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, has written to NHS services and police highlighting a catalogue of failures in the treatment of Lance Corporal Dave Jukes in the months leading up to his suicide.

Earlier this month, she ruled the 49-year-old veteran from Birmingham, who had served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia, took his own life last year after repeated calls for help were largely ignored.

In a strongly worded letter seen by The Sunday Telegraph, she has urged NHS England, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust and West Midlands Police to learn from mistakes in the soldier’s treatment.

It is a crying shame that these men and women made it home to their loved ones only to face PTSD that could just as lethal as any enemy on the battlefield.

Hopefully my readers in the UK will fill in any blanks that I may have in this issue.

After Debate BS

The second Democratic debate is in the can (thank God for small wonders)….and now the DNC is setting the rules for the next debate….rules that will not allow anyone not in the so-called “Top Tier” to participate.

Sorry but CNN fed these people red meat so they would attack and try to destroy a fellow Dem…..who thought we would hear Dems attacking Obama’s policies?  We did on debate night.

This is illustrates just how sad the Democratic Party is these days.

Now the next debate in Houston……

Look at those that have “qualified”….they are not the best but rather the favorites of the media and the DNC

The Democratic field may look a lot smaller by the time next month’s debates roll around, the New York Times reports. The Democratic National Committee has new rules to determine who makes the cut, which could exclude a dozen or so of the remaining candidates. To appear in the Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 debates in Houston, candidates must have 2% backing across four polls and 130,000 unique donors by August 28. Seven are shoo-ins: Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Julián Castro and Andrew Yang meet only the donor requirement, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar only the polling requirement. Vox lists the candidates at more serious risk:

  • Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet
  • Montana Gov. Steve Bullock
  • New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
  • Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney
  • Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard
  • New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
  • Former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel
  • Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper
  • Washington Gov. Jay Inslee
  • Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam
  • Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton
  • Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan
  • Former Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak
  • Billionaire and environmentalist Tom Steyer
  • Author and activist Marianne Williamson

Once again the DNC is deciding who gets the coverage in this election cycle….they want only those that they approve of…..they are influencing who the voter will have to place their votes….not whom the voter wants but rather who the MSM wants.

Yes I am cheesed because my candidate is the list and no she is not the most popular with the MSM or the moderates in her party…..her message is getting stomp0ed on by collusion between the media and the moderates.

I agree that some of these candidates need to go home and play with the wife/husband…..but that decision should be made by the voters not the clowns and cowards that control the DNC….the biggest of which is Perez a big business lackey.

Now look at the MSM…..the debate was so important that a suicide of some Kennedy takes the place in importance.

North Korea–A Missile Too Far?

His Majesty Trump and the Beloved Supreme Leader of DPRK have been passing niceties for over a year….and all that time NK continues its research and its missile launches……like a few days ago….

North Korea on Wednesday fired several unidentified projectiles off its east coast, South Korea’s military said, less than a week after the North launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea. Observers say the launches were aimed at ramping up pressure on the United States to make concessions as the two countries are struggling to resume diplomacy on the North’s nuclear weapons program. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the latest launches were done from the North’s northeastern area. It said South Korea’s military is monitoring for possible additional launches by North Korea, the AP reports. It wasn’t immediately known exactly what North Korea fired or how far the projectiles flew.

The launches came six days after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles that Seoul officials say flew 370 miles before landing off the North’s east coast. North Korea’s state media said leader Kim Jong Un supervised a test of a new missile Thursday designed to deliver “solemn warning” to South Korea over its purchase of high-tech US-made fighter jets and its plans to conduct military drills that Pyongyang sees as an invasion rehearsal. South Korea’s military said the flight data of the weapon launched Thursday showed similarities to the Russian-made Iskander, a short-range, nuclear-capable missile. A North Korean version could likely reach all of South Korea—and the 28,500 US forces stationed there—and would be extremely hard to intercept.

This is a problem that the UN felt it needed to address….

Britain, Germany and France have asked the United Nations Security Council to meet behind closed-doors on Thursday on North Korea’s latest missile launches, diplomats said.

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles early on Wednesday, the South Korean military said, only days after Pyongyang launched two similar missiles intended to pressure South Korea and the United States to stop upcoming military drills.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believed the missile launches were “just another reminder of the importance of restarting talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

It is important enough for the UN to want some action and/or explanation…..but the action was not considered a threat to the US and Trump…..

The guided rockets flew about 250 km, and John Bolton says that they in no way violated Kim Jong Un’s pledge to the US to test launches. North Korea says the rockets were tested to confirm their usability.

Bolton clarified that the US would only consider ICBM tests a problem, and that certainly wouldn’t impact these rockets. This is also in keeping with Trump not being outraged by past short-range missile tests.

North Korea’s state media says that the rocket systems would be of major use in the event of a ground war. This is clearly once again aimed at South Korea, not the US. North Korea has been trying to develop rockets to shore up their forces, which historically are heavily reliant on artillery.

And yet Iran launches a few missiles and the Trump DoD and Bolton lose their small minds and predict catastrophic results unless the US acts against Iran……just saying.

Is a third summit so politically important that Trump and his minions will overlook everything short of a nuke strike on one of our allies?

Oh By The Way….NK has set off even more missiles as of yesterday….but not to worry they are not important….maybe Trump should tell Japan that….what a dunce!

Afghanistan Yo-Yo Policies

The policies governing our involvement in Afghanistan has always been a bit of a yo-yo….first promises then the walk back……

Even Obama was a yo-yo on this…in 2008 he promised to end the war in Afghanistan and bring our troops home…..he lied……

In addition to inheriting an economy in crisis when he took office, President Obama inherited two wars, one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan. An early opponent of President George W. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq in 2003, Obama promised during the 2008 election campaign to withdraw American troops as soon as possible. In February 2009, he announced a plan to bring troop levels down from 160,000 to 50,000 by August 2010, including the removal of all combat forces. The remaining troops, he added, would be withdrawn by the end of 2011. For several years, the withdrawal proceeded smoothly, in part because Obama was able to build on the gains achieved by Bush’s “surge” of 20,000 additional troops in 2007, which had helped the government of Iraq to restore a measure of stability to the country. By 2012, only 150 American troops were in Iraq, a number that remained level for about three years.

Mayor Pete has promised to bring the troops home in his first year in office….

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a veteran of the Afghanistan War, on Tuesday vowed to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan during his first year in office if elected president.

“We will withdraw. We have to,” Buttigieg said during Tuesday night’s Democratic debate.

Pressed by CNN moderator Jake Tapper about whether he would do so in his first year, Buttigieg replied, “Yes.”

“Look, around the world, we will do whatever it takes to keep America safe, but I thought I was one of the last troops leaving Afghanistan when I thought I was turning out the lights years ago,” Buttigieg said.

Now where have we all heard this pile of manure before?

To answer that….several of the 2020 candidates have promised the same…..

Even Trump and his Boyz get in on this deception……on 29 July 2019 Trump said…..”Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Monday that the administration intends to reduce the number of US ground troops in Afghanistan some time before the 2020 presidential election. Timing and size are not yet settled.”

Then on 31 July 2019 the story changes…..

Fresh off of reporting that President Trump had called for a substantial drawdown of US troops from Afghanistan before the 2020 election, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo now says that the reporters “got it wrong” and that there is no deadline for troop cuts.

Pompeo had said just the day prior that Trump was “unambiguous” about the drawdown, and that the policy was “end the endless wars, draw down, reduce.” It’s not clear how that could’ve been misinterpreted, though Pompeo now insists that’s not the policy.

Rather, Pompeo merely says that troop cuts are his personal “hope,” that he’d like to see US troops out before the next election, glibly adding to reporters on his flight that he’d also hope to see US troops out of Afghanistan before the plane lands.

Where that leaves actually US policy is unclear. There are ongoing talks with the Taliban which are said to be aiming for a deal that would end nearly two decades of US occupation of Afghanistan, and even though that deal seems quite close, the administration continues to downplay the possibility of actually following through in any real timetable.

So any props I gave Trump for his announcement I rescind…..this is so typical of foreign policy or what passes for foreign policy….the ups and downs of the Yo-Yo.

As I was finishing up this post word came out that a deal maybe close between the Taleban and all others….

The US is nearing an agreement under which it would remove thousands of troops from Afghanistan, and the Taliban would denounce al-Qaeda and agree to a cease-fire. That would take US troop levels from about 14,000 to fewer than 9,000, roughly the number there when President Trump took office. The preliminary deal has come after months of talks involving the Taliban and Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US ambassador to Kabul who was born in Afghanistan. Trump picked him last year to work on an agreement. “I would say that they are 80 or 90 percent of the way there,” one official told the Washington Post. “But there is still a long way to go on that last 10 or 20 percent.” A Taliban spokesman said Thursday that it looks promising but added, “We hope there won’t be any obstacle, but it also depends on the seriousness of the Americans.”

The Afghan government has already selected a team to negotiate directly with the Taliban, and officials said they welcome that provision. But some worry what the Taliban will do when US troops leave. “The Americans call this a peace negotiation, but the Taliban definitely perceive it as a withdrawal negotiation,” one official told the Post. A State Department official took issue with that, saying the US goal is peace. More than 2,400 American troops have been killed in the war, per Fox News, which has also cost the US more than $900 billion

I want to be optimistic but that feeling has left the room when dealing with Trump “news” announcements.
