Closing Thought–05Feb18

Does everyone remember the promises of the campaign?  Of course not……if they did then Trump would be less popular than he is….but that aside…..does the reader remember all the promises of the return of American business from overseas?

The promise was that he, Trump, would make it such a positive business environment that those American companies would come streaming back…..

Harley-Davidson has crapped on that promise……

The iconic American motorcycle maker was part of President Donald Trump’s focus on U.S. manufacturing in the early days of his administration. Executives visited the White House in February to meet with Trump, who thanked Harley-Davidson “for building things in America.” But even Harley-Davidson had a manufacturing footprint overseas, and the Milwaukee-based company says the facility in Thailand will improve its ability to serve markets where demand is on the rise.

Harley-Davidson said the move will not impact its U.S. factories.

“Will not impact American factories”…..then why is the factory in Kansas City being closed?

Just asking?

Have a good evening…..peace out my friends…..chuq

Kasserine Pass

It is that time again when the old professor gives up a history lesson for all to try and ignore.

The Winter of 1942 was when the US entered into the shooting part of the war.

My interest is because my uncle and my father were part of this historical event…..This is when the US came face to face with Rommel and his Afrika Corps…..and it was not very pretty…..

Beware a Desert Fox when he’s cornered.

It was North Africa, in the winter of 1943, and American soldiers were feeling cocky as they prepared for their first ground battle against the Germans in World War II. So far, it hadn’t been a bad war for the U.S. Army. The GIs were well fed, well paid and well equipped, especially compared to their threadbare and envious British allies. Even better, their baptism by fire had been to splash ashore in Algeria and Morocco in November 1942, where the defenders had been unmotivated Vichy French soldiers who soon capitulated.

As I said it is a personal account for me…..my uncle and later my father were in North Africa…..my uncle was with the First Division and my father a little later with the Army Air Corps…..

This was the US first ass kicking of World War Two…..a learning experience and we know how the war turned out, right?

Through The Veil Of The Multi-Verse

If you are a fan of graphic novels then you will know about the travel between alternate realities….you know where everything is similar except for some small thing that changes everything.

Now for as long as I can remember the GOP has been the Law and Order party…..a platform strong on the rule of law…..and the Dems were those, according to the Conservs, that were soft on the rule of law.

Somewhere after watching the antics of the GOP in the last year we all stepped through some fog and into an alternate universe.

The aggressive Republican attacks on the FBI are the latest sign — if one were needed — that President Donald Trump has upended the longstanding norms of Washington, as he and his allies in Congress seek to undermine the one institution of government that conservatives have typically seen as a bastion of integrity and law-and-order.

Since at least the dawn of the New Deal, Republicans have excoriated any number of government entities (the Tennessee Valley Authority, the State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) as woolly-headed, hyper-regulatory and riddled with liberals — or worse.

And who would have imagined 40 years ago that the GOP would be defending Russia and attacking our main law enforcement agency?

I am still scratching my head……the same people that attacked me for saying anything remotely positive about Russia are now on Team Russia and are never saying anything negative about the situation with Russia.

The people that chanted “America:  Love It Or Leave It” are now basically saying “Leave Russia Alone”…..who knew such a reversal could or would take place?

Populism–What’s It Good For

The election of 2016 brought about the use of the term populism….it has been around for many many years but not used so much by the media when reporting on an election…..and the 2016 arrived and not knowing exactly what to do about the whole popularity of Trump and Sanders….viola the term “populism” found a new home……

Populists abhor restraints on the political executive. Since they claim to represent “the people” writ large, they regard limits on their exercise of power as necessarily undermining the popular will. Such constraints can only serve the “enemies of the people” – minorities and foreigners (for right-wing populists) or financial elites (in the case of left-wing populists).

This is a dangerous approach to politics, because it allows a majority to ride roughshod over the rights of minorities. Without separation of powers, an independent judiciary, or free media – which all populist autocrats, from Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Viktor Orbán and Donald Trump detest – democracy degenerates into the tyranny of whoever happens to be in power.

Periodic elections under populist rule become a smokescreen. In the absence of the rule of law and basic civil liberties, populist regimes can prolong their rule by manipulating the media and the judiciary at will.

Populism is a dangerous thing….the whole “voice of the people” is good cover but a dangerous trend in a democratic country.

Is It A One State Solution?

Just before Christmas our president recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel…..making good on the promises that he made to his bankers during his election…..and as one would expect the Palestinians did not find this announcement acceptable and violence has ensued.

It is time for a new beginning.

US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital came as no surprise to most Palestinians, for, after all the US’ political backing and military funding of Israel is older than the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Trump’s decision, however, has exposed the “peace process” for the last time as a complete charade. It also exposed the Palestinian leadership as corrupt, subservient and politically bankrupt.

If the Palestinian leadership had a minimal degree of accountability, it would immediately undertake a total overhaul within its ranks and activate all Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) institutions, bring all factions together under the umbrella of the PLO and declare a unified strategy inspired by the aspirations and sacrifices of the Palestinian people.

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/palestine-180116110352197.htm

Abbas is the leader of the PA and his tenure has been nothing but a hurry up ans wait strategy……a strategy that did nothing to further the plight of the Palestinian people……

When I first met Yasser Arafat in besieged Beirut, in the summer of 1982, Abu Mazen was not present. But when I met him again in Tunis, a few months later, he asked me to meet Abu Mazen, too.

Abu Mazen, it transpired, was the Fatah leader in charge of Israeli matters.

My first impression of Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) was that he was the exact opposite of Arafat. He looked like a schoolmaster.

Arafat was an outgoing type, who liked to embrace and kiss people and to establish close relations from the outset. Abu Mazen was much more reserved and withdrawn. Yet I liked his personality.

Even then, more than 35 years ago, he belonged to the first rank of the Fatah and PLO leadership, side by side with people like Abu Jihad (who was killed by Israel), Abu Iyad (who was killed by Palestinian extremists), Farouk Kaddoumi (who objected to Oslo and was excluded).

The whole peace process that has been debated for decades is about to slide into history…….

Since President Donald Trump declared that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the question has been whether this break with past American policy weakens or advances the cause of peace. A corollary to that question is whether the move effectively excludes Washington from the peace process.

https://www.realclearworld.com/articles/2017/12/19/peace_process_palestine_israel_jerusalem_history_112666.html

For decades the solution that most parties worked for was a two state solution….but since Trump’s announcement that solution has been losing its luster…..and now the possibility of a one state solution is getting more popular…….

The Israeli right, emboldened by President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, is not the only faction arguing for a single state between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Palestine Liberation Organization has also begun to ask whether that might not be such a bad idea, though it has a radically different view of what that state would look like.

As momentum ebbs for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both sides are taking another look at the one-state idea. But that solution has long been problematic for both sides.

But there is a problem there also…..the one state solution would have to give the Palestinians full rights as citizens of Israel…..not happening for the Palestinian population is expanding faster than the Israeli and within a generation the Israelis would become a minority….the Israelis could not stand for that…..democracy is the last thing that Israel would want for the Palestinians…….

Full equality will not happen in Israel for Palestinians….and the possibility for a peaceful one state solution is dwindling…..Zionists will not accept Palestinians as equals.

Troops plan for peace in the region is to blackmail the Palestinians…..while allowing the Israelis to get away with murder (pun intended)…….

Then BiBi has a new plan …….

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahy was talking up what he’s calling a “new model” for a peace deal with the Palestinians, which appears to be his latest alternative to the two-state solution, which he once again refused to endorse.

Netanyahu complained he wanted to avoid “labels” by talking about two states, but set out a policy which is clearly well short of such a solution, offering to allow the Palestinians to have “the whole trappings of self-governance,” but with Israel maintaining formal control.

Eager to avoid labels, Netanyahu was a bit vague beyond Israel keeping total security control over Palestine permanently, but appears to be suggesting that they’d be allowed to have some measure of autonomy within Palestine as an Israeli-ruled territory.

There is nothing new about this plan……it is a plan to try and head off the BDS which is gaining support almost daily….it is a plan to throw cold water on criticism on the international stage……only friend Israel has is one that they paid for in political dollars….the US.
