Closing Thought–12Feb18

My recent stay in the hospital showed me how serious the flu season is this year….all their employees that did not get a flu shot must wear a face mask when dealing with patients.

A lot of bloggers have written or posted about the flu season this year……I guess I will join the band.

This flu season is a beast, and the CDC warned Friday that we aren’t done yet. Another 10 children have died from the flu, bringing the total this season to 63, NBC News reports. That’s still fewer than the 110 who died last flu season. But USA Today reports the US is seeing the highest rates of flu-related hospitalizations since the CDC started keeping track of that stat in 2010. And 7.7% of all doctor visits are related to the flu—the highest rate since 2009.

It could still get worse. “We don’t know if we have hit the peak yet,” says acting CDC director Anne Schuchat. We’re in week 11 of this flu season; flu season typically lasts for 16 weeks but can run as long as 20 weeks. “We could potentially see several more weeks of increased flu activity,” Schuchat says. It’s as yet unclear exactly why this flu season is so bad.

Many people like to self-medicate and save the cash that most doctors get without using a gun…it is robbery…..

Here are 10 herbs that some swear will help you beat a cold this season…..

If you feel a cold coming on, consider the benefits of herbal medicine.  The following herbs have been shown to be effective at battling the common cold.

  1. Echinacea:  Echinacea is known for its ability to enhance the immune system.  It stimulates white blood cells, increases production of interferon and increases immune cells ability to destroy invading microbes.  Six studies show that echinacea significantly reduces the risk of respiratory infection.  A separate six studies show that echinacea shortens the duration of colds and flus.(3)
  2. Astragalus:  Astragalus is a tonic and adaptogen.  Studies show that it boosts immune system and fights viruses, bacteria, and inflammation.(3)
  3. Elderberry:  Elderberry can inhibit the enzyme that the flu virus uses to penetrate cell membranes.  In one study, elderberry juice mixed with raspberry extract, glucose, citric acid and honey inhibited both type A and type B influenza virus.(3)
  4. Garlic:  Garlic boosts immune function and kills a broad range of microbes.  Studies show that garlic is active against cold and flu viruses.  Garlic also functions as an expectorate to help remove mucus from the body.(3)
  5. Licorice root:  Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which has been shown in studies to inactivate and inhibit a wide range of viruses.  It also contains a polysaccharide ingredient that increases the bodies production of interferon and activates while blood cells. (3)
  6. St. John’s wort:  St. John’s wort can inhibit influenze A and parainfluenza viruses.
  7. Lomatium:  Lomatium has been used by Native Americans for bacteria and viral infections.  Studies show that it is potent against viruses and bacteria.(3)
  8. Stinging Nettle:  Studies show that this herb inhibits influenza A virus and is also packed with nutrients.  Nettle contains high amounts of carotenoids and flavonoids that help ease allergies. (3)
  9. Lemon Balm:  Test tube studies show that lemon balm or Melissa oil has antiviral effects against parainfluenza and other bacterial infections. (3)
  10. Peppermint:  Peppermint oil helps relax the airways and open congested sinuses and nasal passages.  One study shows that inhaling peppermint relieves respiratory discomfort.(3)

Instead of purchasing over the counter medicines that often leave you feeling groggy and run down, consider herbs that will help boost your immune system, shorten your time of sickness and allow you to return back to your daily routine.

Take care of yourself….be well……chuq

I Love A Parade!

I admit it…I have been lazy for the last couple of weeks since I came home from the hospital….just have not been interested in writing much.

I decided to get back into the saddle as they say….but with what subject?  DACA….nope there is enough bullshit flowing around that subject…the possible shutdown….nope that is something that happens at least once a year and is not that interesting….what then?  How about the parade thingy?

Good idea!

As usual this subject breaks down along the lines of those with Trump support and others in opposition to him….my opinion is why?  I mean we already have these things especially on Memorial Day, 4th and Veterans Day…..so we do not need to plan any others…period.

I find myself in agreement with Sen. Paul……we seem to agree on the stands of war and foreign policy (mostly)….he wrote an op-ed about the parade idea.

A military parade in the nation’s capital? The last military parade in Washington was in 1991, after our victory in the first Iraq War.

Though the martial image of high-stepping soldiers is not one I tend to associate with our nation’s Founders’ distrust of a standing Army, I’m not against a victory celebration. So I propose we declare victory in Afghanistan, bring home our 14,000 troops and hold a victory parade.

We defeated the enemy in Afghanistan. We killed or captured the terrorists who planned, plotted, or aided in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. We killed the ringleader, Usama bin Laden. We disrupted the terrorists’ camps where they plotted and trained. We dislodged the Taliban government that aided and abetted bin Laden.

There!  The perfect reason to have a parade….this president and his need for a pat on the back at every turn can have his day….he gets a thank you and the admiration of the nation…..the perfect formula to keep this president happy and off Twitter.

Then there is a Naval response to the parade thing……

In recent days, news has emerged of potential plans for a military parade in the style of France’s annual Bastille Day défilé. Perhaps the spectacle of the French military parading through Paris inspired our Commander-in-Chief to investigate the possibility of a similar event here.

As an active duty officer in a sea command, I ask you, as my appointed leadership, to respectfully decline this request.

Our fleet faces a readiness crisis. Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer has said that every readiness question must start with the mention of our 17 dead shipmates on the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) and Fitzgerald (DDG-62), and this proposed movement of people, parts, and equipment must be considered through the same lens. Our reasons for rejecting this proposal fall into three categories: The fiscal, the material, and the philosophical.[1]

I like Sen. Rand Paul’s suggestion.

Ignorance About Slavery

When it comes to the subject of American slavery the student is woefully misinformed for the most part.

Every American knows though some do not want to acknowledge that the American South was a hot bed of slavery…….too many make too many excuses for the   situation and our educational system is no help in teaching the real story of slavery……

Just eight percent of American high school seniors can identify the cause of the Civil War; less than a third (32 percent) know which amendment abolished slavery in the U.S.; and fewer than half (46 percent) know that the “Middle Passage” refers to the harrowing voyage across the Atlantic undertaken by Africans kidnapped for the slave trade. These are only a few of the more unnerving findings from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project, which concludes that in classrooms across the country, the subject of slavery is as mistaught as it is misunderstood.

Drawing from online surveys of 1,000 12th-graders and more than 1,700 social studies teachers, along with an exhaustive analysis of the 10 most widely read U.S. history textbooks, the SPLC’s latest report attempts to assess how well the country understands its original sin. In a word, the results are “abysmal.”

More on the study made on the subject of slavery as taught in our high schools……

https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/02/04/582468315/why-schools-fail-to-teach-slaverys-hard-history

I am old and I live in the South……I have heard just about every  excuse possible for the act of slavery….none of them are acceptable…..at least to me.  Ignoring the institution will not make it go away……teaching falsehoods will not make it more acceptable.

A Coming Russia-Ukrainian War?

I could bore the crap out you with posts about a memo….or how many Trump advisers have hit the pavement……or…….

I do a lot of reading and studying world events looking for that next war to inflict damage on the human race.  I spend hours reading and analyzing events that are not necessarily reported by the mainstream media.

The Ukraine has been a hot spot for a couple years now…..the US and Russia are facing off……a face-off that could become a hotter conflict any day now….why?

A new draft law adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament and awaiting Petro Poroshenko’s signature threatens to escalate the Ukrainian conflict into a full-blown war, pitting nuclear-armed Russia against the United States and NATO

While much of America’s – and the world’s – attention focused this weekend reflecting on Donald Trump’s first year in the Oval Office, holding one-year anniversary events for the historic Women’s March and drawing up balance sheets of his promises and achievements, Russia has had a rather different issue on the front-burner: a possible war with Ukraine.

The situation in the Donbass region of south-eastern Ukraine has been a feature of Russia’s political talk shows for the past couple years, along with the military campaign in Syria and more recently the stages in the preparation for presidential elections on March 18.

All these situations are stretching the US military thin….so thin that a breaking point is very close.

The US is making the world a safer place…..one war at a time.  And most of them are useless use of American military power.
