Closing Thought–14Nov19

We all have read or heard about the mass shooting this year (348 so far) and the pundits and so-called experts have had a wealth of ideas to stop or at least slow down the rate of death.

One such ‘solution’ is to encourage the male fighting spirit…..

Horrific mass shootings routinely bring out strong and passionate views from all sides of the political spectrum. Is the breakdown in family to blame? Or is it not enough background checks and lax firearm regulations, violent video games, mental illness, a cultural fixation on aggression as a solution to problems? The pundits and politicians have all the answers—yet somehow the mass shootings don’t stop.

Behind this debate over violence, however, lies a counterintuitive truth about conflict.

In a certain way, mass shootings—most often perpetrated by males—are a sign that we need more fighting. They are a reclassification of violence from direct to indirect, a shift from confrontation to elimination. Let me specify what I mean here. Gun violence provides a false avenue for loners and sometimes mentally ill young men to store up resentment and then unleash it all at once in overwhelming, lethal force. Rather than direct conflict against bullies or a bitterly resented group as a whole, it provides a false alternative, a fake ace up the sleeve. Rather than confronting those who torture our psyches, weaponized violence gives the illusion that we can just eliminate such people and situations altogether.

In Defense of Male Fighting

Sounds nutty right?

Is this a “Fight Club”?

Well if it ends the mass shootings then I say let the suckers fight…..a couple of missing teeth is far superior than dying, right?

Just a thought!

How Can A “Stable Genius” Be So Damn Ignorant?

We have been told on several, possibly many occasions that Trump is a “stable genius” and a “really smart person”….and yet every time he opens his mouth he shows just how ignorant he truly is……

When Trump or whoever is sworn in as the president they must take the oath of office…… “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

I guess we could make the case that he has NO ability to to protect and defend the Constitution…..

My biggest problem with Trump is that he wants those around him to protect him and not so much the Constitution…..he wants loyalty to him and him alone…..the Constitution is just a prop to be run out at election time or to make a political point.

Does he, Trump, know what the job of an Inspector General is?

The work of the IG offices involves detecting and preventing fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement of the government programs and operations within their parent agencies or organizations. Investigations conducted by the IG offices may target internal government employees or external government contractors, grant recipients, or recipients of loans and subsidies offered through federal assistance programs.

To help them carry out their investigative role, Inspectors General have the authority to issue subpoenas for information and documents, administer oaths for taking testimony, and can hire and control their own staff and contract personnel. The investigative authority of Inspectors General is limited only by certain national security and law enforcement considerations.

Inspectors General are under the general supervision of the agency head or deputy, neither the agency head nor the deputy can prevent or prohibit an Inspector General from conducting an audit or investigation.

The conduct of the Inspectors General is overseen by the Integrity Committee of the President’s Council on Integrity and Efficiency (PCIE).

I bring this up because of a report circulating……

President Trump on Wednesday lashed out at the intelligence community inspector general over his handling of a whistleblower complaint raising alarm over Trump’s conversations with Ukraine.

In a series of tweets, Trump described the whistleblower complaint and related controversy as a “hoax” and a “scam.”

Trump also questioned Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) Michael Atkinson’s handling of the complaint and asserted that Atkinson “should have never let it start.”

“Why doesn’t the ICIG do something about this Scam? He should have never let it start, a Dem Hoax!”

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/465010-trump-lashes-out-at-intel-inspector-general-over-whistleblower-storm

Sorry but I want my politicians to include the president to follow the rule of law and not play word games or demand for personal loyalty over loyalty to the Constitution.

Someone should let the president know what the duties of an IG are….not that the “really smart person” would understand.

His attitude seems to be that NONE of our laws and rules apply to him….everyone else must play by his rules not those of the Constitution.

“Stable” my ass!

House Impeachment Hearing–Day 1

As a service to my readers I will offer summary of the day’s proceedings dealing with the impeachment hearing in the House for Pres. Trump…..

The moment has arrived: The public phase of the House impeachment inquiry of President Trump began on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Democrat Adam Schiff declared at the start of the hearing that the “future of the presidency itself” is at stake, while Republican Devin Nunes called the hearings a “carefully orchestrated smear campaign.” The first two witnesses were William Taylor, the top US diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Some highlights:

  • Another phone call: In a new piece of information, Taylor testified that a member of his staff overheard Trump ask about the “the investigations” during a phone call with diplomat Gordon Sondland, reports the AP. The call took place one day after Trump’s call to the Ukraine president in July. (Sondland and the Taylor staffer were in a restaurant together when Trump called.) During the conversation, Sondland told Trump the Ukrainians were poised to move forward. After the call, the Taylor staffer asked Sondland what Trump thought about Ukraine. “Sondland responded that President Trump cares more about the investigations of Biden, which (Rudy) Giuliani was pressing for,” said Taylor, per Axios.
  • More on that: Politico sees the call as “an explosive new detail,” and the Washington Post agrees, saying it ties Trump “more directly to the effort to pressure Ukraine to probe his political opponents.” Plus, it undermines Trump’s previous assertion that he barely knows Sondland. A post at Red State, though, scoffs at the idea this is significant. “Under any other circumstances a staffer claiming to have heard what a remote participant on a telephone call said in a private phone call would be laughed at,” it reads. “This kind of nonsense would not be allowed before any committee that still had a sense of shame.”
  • Trump denial: During a press conference with Turkey’s president after their Oval Office meeting, Trump denied knowledge of the overheard call. “I know nothing about that,” he said, per the AP. “First time I’ve heard it.”
  • Star witness? Taylor disputed the idea put forth by GOP Rep. Jim Jordan that he was a “star witness” for Democrats, reports the Hill. “I don’t consider myself a star witness for anything,” he said. “I’m not here to take one side or the other.” When Taylor said his “clear understanding” was that Ukraine aid and investigations were linked, Jordan shot back, “Your clear understanding was obviously wrong, because it didn’t happen.”
  • GOP strategy: In questioning Taylor about Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, GOP lead counsel Steve Castor said, “You certainly can appreciate that President Trump was very concerned that some elements of the Ukrainian establishment were not in favor of him, did not support him, and were out to get him.” Schiff warned Castor about commenting on “facts not in evidence,” but eventually allowed the question, reports the Washington Post. “So you certainly can appreciate President Trump’s concerns,” repeated Castor to Taylor, who responded, “I don’t know the exact nature of President Trump’s concerns.”

*******Let me help my readers out….the timeline for the aid thing….

THE TIMELINE July 18: Trump withholds military aid July 25: Trump demands Biden probe from Ukraine Sept 1: Sondland tells Ukraine aid contingent on probe Sept 9: Congress learns of whistleblower report exposing bribery scheme Sept 11: Military aid is magically released********

  • About Biden: When Kent was asked if there was any truth to the theory that Joe Biden pushed Ukraine to fire a prosecutor in order to protect his son, he answered, “None whatsoever,” per the Wall Street Journal. However, Kent confirmed that he reported his concerns about Hunter Biden serving on the board of a Ukraine gas company as a possible conflict of interest during the Obama-Biden administration.
  • More from Kent: He shot down the conspiracy theory, one pushed by the White House, that it was Ukraine, not Russia, that interfered in the 2016 election. “I think it’s amply clear that Russian interference was at the heart of the interference.”
  • Opening statements: Kent’s opening statement is here, Taylor’s is here, Nunes’ is here, and Schiff’s is here.
  • A ‘sham’: Before the hearings began, Trump lashed out in a series of morning tweets. “Millions of Americans will see what a partisan sham this whole thing is,” Trump wrote, quoting Rush Limbaugh. Trump also called out “NEVER TRUMPERS!” For the record, both witnesses denied they were “never Trumpers” during testimony. Trump later retweeted a number of Republican tweets denouncing the inquiry, and retweeted a White House tweet declaring, “New hoax. Same swamp.”
  • “Shadow war”: The AP reports a “shadow disinformation war” was already underway before the hearing began, and rounds up the intense social media scrutiny of the proceedings.
  • Was the POTUS tuning in? Trump told reporters during his meeting with Erdogan that he wasn’t watching the proceedings, a statement he reiterated later during their press conference. “I hear it’s a joke. I haven’t watched for one minute because I’ve been with the president” of Turkey, he said. He added that he wants to know the identity of the whistleblower whose complaint launched the impeachment inquiry.
  • As for the whistleblower: Schiff had said earlier Wednesday the House Intelligence Committee would take up a motion to issue a congressional subpoena to compel the whistleblower to appear behind closed doors, but ultimately that motion was tabled after Taylor and Kent finished testifying. Their testimony lasted five hours.
  • What’s next: Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, who was ousted in May on Trump’s orders, will testify Friday. Next week will see eight more witnesses testifying.
  • Takeaways from Wednesday: The AP has a few here.

THe GOP on the committee did just as I said they would….tried to turn the hearing into a circus staffed with clowns…..Nunes did not disappoint…..Jordan did not disappoint……the GOP has nothing to counter the evidence other than wanting a whistleblower’s name….that tells me the evidence must be spot on if they cannot counter it.

The first day is in the can….now we have a whole day for the MSM to analyze and the pundits to earn their money…..hearing to return Friday.

2020–Doom And Gloom

We have an election quickly coming to the horizon and we have those wise sages that are predicting all sorts of ‘doom and gloom’…..like Trump will be re-elected or the Dems will implode and go down as the worse defeat in history, or ….well I am sure you have heard some of the predictions….believe them or not…..it will be a historic election for so many reasons….too many to write about and besides this post is about the possibility of the parties imploded during this election…..or after….

I have read that the Democratic Party will not survive and I have also read that the GOP may not survive……which is it?

First the Dems……

Long, long ago, on Monday, when a Hillary Clinton victory seemed likely, the forecast for the Democratic Party looked grim. The party was confident that its aging candidate, the spouse of another former Democratic president, could win, and it was optimistic about winning control of the Senate. Clinton might serve (to borrow a phrase) as a bridge to the 2010s, but the next two elections would be much tougher: Democrats would be defending a lot of difficult Senate seats in 2018, and simple structural forces made it unlikely a President Clinton could hold the White House for two terms. Who would lead the party then?

Instead, the nightmare has arrived early. All of those dangers still beset the party, but now without the bridge of a Clinton presidency to ease the blow. Donald Trump will enter the White House with a Republican Senate and a Republican House. Because President Obama was unable to get the Senate to vote on his appointee for an open Supreme Court seat, Trump will immediately have the chance to appoint a ninth member to the Court, breaking a 4-4 tie. At the state level, Republicans now control at least 34 governorships, the most since 1922, and ran up their advantage in state legislatures.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/11/can-the-democratic-party-survive/507116/

More on the opinion that the Dems may not survive 2020…….

The last political party to dissolve was about 163 years ago when the Whig’s morphed into the newly formed Republican Party who unsuccessfully ran John C. Fremont in the 3 way contest of 1856.

It is quite possible that voters are now seeing the beginning of the end of the Democratic Party by virtue of internal dissatisfaction and divisiveness.

Can such a fractured party come together to mount a serious challenge to a flawed but productive Republican president?

https://patch.com/georgia/canton-ga/will-democrat-party-survive

Will they or won’t they?

Not to worry….there are predictions that the GOP could face problems because of this election…..especially since the party has been whittled down of basically old white guys and they are dying….

Outgoing Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas), the only black Republican in the House, warned in a new interview that the GOP needs to adapt and start looking like the rest of America or “there won’t be a Republican Party in this country.”

In an interview with Axios that aired Sunday, Hurd said that “we know where the trends are going” regarding demographics in America and that Republicans “know what we need to do.”

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/468782-gop-lawmaker-if-the-party-doesnt-adapt-to-changing-demographics-there-wont-be

Or maybe this will interest you…..

The Republican Party and American democracy are having a bit of a falling out.

A half-century ago, conservatives claimed to speak for a silent majority of the electorate; now they brag about representing the (even quieter) majority of American dirt and grass. The dispersion of Republican voters across the U.S. landmass can still paint electoral maps red, but the GOP’s standard-bearer has lost the popular vote in six of the past seven presidential elections. Last year, with voter turnout historically high, the party’s House candidates lost the nationwide vote by 8.6 percent. As of 2018, there were 12 million more registered Democrats than Republicans on America’s voting rolls.

These parties will survive but in what shape?

That ISIS Thing

We have not had much news about ISIS…as it should be because according to Trump he defeated them single handed….and yet they still exist….

Even before the recent raid that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the erstwhile head of the Islamic State, Donald Trump had spoken of how he had single-handedly defeated the caliphate.

“Now, when I came, the caliphate was all over the place,” the president said apropos of nothing during a news conference with the Australian prime minister on September 20. “I defeated the caliphate — ISIS.”

At a press conference on October 21, after pulling troops out of Syria, Trump put himself even closer to the battle with the Islamic State: “I’m the one that did the capturing. I’m the one who that knows more about it than you people or the fake pundits.”

The Islamic State and Trump’s Delusion

A look at this ISIS thing through the eyes of a Neocon think tank……

Almost as soon as it became clear that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was dead, the revisionism began about whether this was actually a good thing.

Some analysts predicted that al-Baghdadi’s death as a “martyr” would inspire others, becoming a “propaganda bonanza” for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

We should not be so gloomy. The death of such a sadistic killer and serial rapist is unambiguously good news.

It was also the last thing that ISIS needed. Caliphate relinquished, the group’s operations inevitably will be disrupted by the death of its emir, especially with Abu Hassan al-Muhajir—a potential successor—killed in a U.S. airstrike just hours later.

5 Things to Watch in Tracking the Future of ISIS

The group has been diminished but not gone……and they have a new tactic of terror….FIRE

A media outlet affiliated with ISIS has been instructing the group’s radical adherents to set forest fires in the United States and Europe to cause mass ecological disasters, according to posts on an internet forum dedicated to the terror group.

At least four propaganda posters that have appeared on the pro-ISIS Quraysh media outlet have urged followers to “ignite fires” as part of an ongoing jihad against America and its allies.

https://freebeacon.com/national-security/isis-tells-followers-to-set-forest-fires-in-u-s-europe/

The caliphate is down but not out……

Just months after the Islamic State militant group lost the last of its territory in Syria, and days after its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed in a U.S.-led raid, the group has found safe haven in a remote, ungoverned space in Iraq, as foreign fighters move across the border from Syria, military officials tell NBC news.

“The fight against ISIS is continuous,” said U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. William Seely, commander of Task Force-Iraq. “We’re seeing ISIS fighters move from Syria across hundreds of miles of desert.”

Their goal, Seely says, is to re-establish their physical caliphate in the region.

How many times must I say this….ISIS IS NOT DEFEATED!

It is only napping waiting for the day to return.
