Turkey and Iran Reach Agreement on Conditions for Syria Peace

Yes sports fans Turkey and Iran have come top an agreement on the Syrian civil war…..

I know that countries and pundits alike have been looking for a way to end the death and destruction in Syria….among other countries….and it appears that Turkey and Iran have come to some sort of agreement on how to proceed…..

In a stunning diplomatic surprise, Turkey and Iran have announced a preliminary agreement on fundamental principles for a settlement of the Syrian conflict.

The dramatic turn in the diplomacy of the Syria War was revealed in Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim’s regular weekly speech to the ruling AKP Party in the parliament and confirmed by a senior Iranian foreign ministry official Tuesday.

Both Yildirim’s speech and the Iranian corroboration were reported Tuesday by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and Al-Hayat, Arabic-language newspapers published in London, but the potentially pivotal development has been unreported thus far in Western news media.

This is all well and good…..just I have one problem with this idea……

Where is the input of the Syrian people?  After all it is their country…..well at least for now…..I believe they should have a voice in any solution offered.

They had NO input in 1918 and look where that eventually came to…..maybe they should have the lead voice on any solution that involves their country…..just a thought.

Whatcha think?

But I guess since that plan is not what everyone wanted…….bullets are always easier then words……

  1. Warfare and destruction are in the very DNA of that region … has been for centuries and will be for centuries to come … any “Peace” will be temporary at best. No amount of International intervention will ever do anything to help the situation … never has, never will.

      1. John, I respect you and I refuse to trash anything you say…..may be a failing but it is my failing…

      2. Ohhh … Trash me to your heart’s content. There is no sin in saying what is in your heart. We need more openness and transparency in the world of information and idea exchange these days. Lay it on and fear nothing. I have a thick skin. Come now, don’t be shy!

  2. What should happen and what will happen are two different things. Yes bullets are easier than words chuq and of course “might makes right”. I’m not sure I actually believe Syria needs to remain in tact but I guess it would be for the best….that is only a guess. Yes I wish the actual Syrians were consulted but isn’t this just Turkey and Iran saying what they will support or won’t support. How can they actually make a pact without some Syrian factions fighting it, if they don’t agreer am I just a fool? ~~dru~~

  3. I can’t believe for a second that the Syrians haven’t been praying for some peace and stability. Turkey has been hit hard with all the Syrian refugees and attacks by ISIS. The last straw was the recent failed coup which Turkey is convinced was US led.

Guess which country is not taking in Syrian refugees? You guessed it! SAUDI ARABIA

I have been following Sputnik News for this story. The below excerpts are from the 7/28/16 post, “Russian Deal With Turkey Could Spell Game Over for US and Rebels in Syria.”

This point of view has been echoed by Dr. Bassam Abu Abdallah, Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at Damascus University, who told the newspaper that Syria is not counting on the negotiations in Geneva, but rather on a rapprochement between Russia (with Iran’s approval.) and Turkey.
“The Riyadh-formed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) (Saudi Arabia) is prone to US influence and the influence of the Middle Eastern states and is not acting in the interests of Syria,” he said.

While he does not expect any progress in the negotiations, the expert suggests that the failed coup attempt in Turkey will push Ankara to reconsider its foreign policy objectives.

The US has been accused of being behind the attempted military overthrow, he said. Washington is also for the further break up of Syria and for creating Kurdish autonomy.

All the above, he said, is unacceptable to Turkey, and so it will try to get closer to Russia and Iran and might make the decision to close its border with Syria which will result in a dramatic change in the balance of powers on the battlefield, he concluded.

Recent reports suggest that the next round of intra-Syrian talks could be scheduled for the end of August. The Syrian government delegation, as well as three opposition groups — the Riyadh-formed HNC (Saudi Arabia), the Moscow-Cairo and the Hmeymim groups — have been taking part in the UN-mediated Geneva talks on the peaceful settlement of the conflict.

The latest round of talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The HNC (Saudi Arabia) walked out of the negotiations, citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
For US, Losing Turkey to Russia is a ‘Major Geopolitical Setback’

    Looks like, it went well.
