Long Live The Oligarchy

Whenever I write about the failing of our democratic principles there will always be someone who, without an argument, wants to remind me that we are a republic not a democracy.

Yes we are a republic so then maybe we ALL should stop using the term “democracy” all together…..and stop saying we are promoting “democracy” around the world….apparently we are not.

I have had many conversations here on IST about the possibility that we are not a democracy but rather an oligarchy….

Huh?

Oligarchy (Greek Ὀλιγαρχία, Oligarkhía, from óligon, “few,” and arkho, “rule” ) is a form of government in which political power effectively rests with a small, elite segment of society. The term was used by Aristotle to refer to despotic power exercised by a small and privileged group for often corrupt or selfish purposes. In most classic oligarchies, governing elites were recruited exclusively from a hereditary ruling caste, whose members tended to exercise power in the interests of their own class.

Oligarchies have sometimes been synonymous with aristocracies, which were ruled by members of a noble class, or with plutocracies, ruled by the wealthy members of a community. However, neither wealth nor noble birth are necessary conditions for belonging to the privileged group which rules an oligarchy. Historically, there have been organized oligarchies, and unofficial oligarchies in which a group of “advisers” dictated the policies of an official ruler. In practice, almost all governments, whatever their form, are run by a small minority of members of society, and it is necessary to further examine the ways in which these individuals acquire and retain power in order to correctly understand whether a system of government is a oligarchy.

A couple of years ago this supposition was covered by the New Yorker…..

From the Dept. of Academics Confirming Something You Already Suspected comes a new study concluding that rich people and organizations representing business interests have a powerful grip on U.S. government policy. After examining differences in public opinion across income groups on a wide variety of issues, the political scientists Martin Gilens, of Princeton, and Benjamin Page, of Northwestern, found that the preferences of rich people had a much bigger impact on subsequent policy decisions than the views of middle-income and poor Americans. Indeed, the opinions of lower-income groups, and the interest groups that represent them, appear to have little or no independent impact on policy.

Now a new study as confirmed our greatest fear…..IT is official!

The U.S. government does not represent the interests of the majority of the country’s citizens, but is instead ruled by those of the rich and powerful, a new study from Princeton and Northwestern universities has concluded.

The report, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens” (PDF)

After sifting through nearly 1,800 U.S. policies enacted in that period and comparing them to the expressed preferences of average Americans (50th percentile of income), affluent Americans (90th percentile), and large special interests groups, researchers concluded that the U.S. is dominated by its economic elite.

You can sleep well tonight in knowing that our country is now in the hands of the oligarchy.

  1. At the very least our Oligarchy could have chosen a frontman less resembling a buffoonish clown so eagerly manipulated .i don’t think this is conducive to a good nights sleep. 🙂 I think we were a democracy plodding along in the hands of a do nothing leader (with the exception of Obama care but without the guts to come forward with crucial information in a timely manner for fear of being perceived partisan ) as a result …well here it is.

      1. Well, same here but there are people in this world who need help and but for the grace of God go you and I. They are not allowed the option of not caring, and there are those of us who do care about these people who need support from one of the wealthiest countries in the world and it is certain that the incoming administration will handily rid them of any support that they can. I was not surprised to learn that the Ethics committee is being dissolved by the republican congress.

      2. As the Scriptures have said, “You shall always have the poor with you.” Fact of life. Too bad. Been there, done that and when I was bankrupt in 1978 living under bridges and eating out of tin cans for a year … there was no one who would give me anything but “Prayer.”

The average Christian I met in those days had a stock saying, “I’ll pray fer ye, but I ain’t got nothing to give ye.”

        Hypocrites all!

    1. Thanx for the Ping and the mention…..I love this country but you are right….wer have let our standards slide in the name of “small government”….I wish I had a magic wand so that I could get thru to a typical American…they have NO idea what is happening….chuq

  2. Calling the US a democracy has always represented the basic flaw in that form of government, for, it never was a democracy; it was designed as democratic republic. But that’s too hard for most people to think about, or understand, so, they just call it what sounds good, and assume that makes it real…A democratic republic requires citizens who are smarter than that.

Oligarchy, or plutocracy, take your pick. Me, I just call ’em sub-human assholes, but, what do I know?

    (A lot, actually….)

    gigoid, the dubious

  3. Things may be changing with “traditional” power holding but until recently there is little doubt that America was a plutocracy, not an oligarchy, and definitely never has it been a democracy. The term “democracy” was put out there as blatant misdirection, and boy, did that piece of vile propaganda work well… until now. Now the powers that be don’t even need to pretend any longer: they’re in, the rest are out. “Slave for us, or die. Nothing ever did change, we just let you think you were changing things because you had two cars in the driveway and a garage full of stuff.” But whether it’s a plutocracy or an oligarchy in the end, it won’t make an iota of difference for the deluded masses holding nothing but a cap in their hands begging for bread from a passing armored limo.

    1. As it is going today the days you describe are not far off….unless some things change….and change is NOT an American tradition….so we are so screwed……chuq

    2. Plutocracy, The Oligarchy, aka the 1%. Bernie Sanders is right. It is not OUR world while others own it and run it. Learn what you need to know. They have had control of our world for thousands of years! They created a Heaven on Earth for themselves, at our expense!

Those of royal blood, who are privy to the reality of the situation are born into powerful families who control our world.

  4. A few people today have brought up the Oligarchy, calling it various names (aka the 1%, etc.). Jesse Ventura, Bernie Sanders, and others.

The reality is that the Oligarchy is nothing new. It has been around for thousands of years. There will never be anything upon this Earth other than the Oligarchy ruling our world unless we do something about it. And to do that, we must first realize the reality of the situation.
