Trying To Reason With The Hurricane Season–2016

I begin with a joke…..

what did the hurricane say to the coconut palm?

“hang on to your nuts this is no ordinary blow job”.

(rim shot)

This post may not be of interest to many of my readers but my town was all but destroyed by Katrina and Camille 30 years before…..so I take the start of the season seriously and do my preparations as usual…..

Today begins the long watch for approaching storms…now until end of November….hopefully the only disaster in that time span will be the election of the wrong person to lead this country.

For those that may be in or near the Gulf Coast here is this years predictions for the hurricane season……

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there is a 70 percent likelihood that there will be 10 to 16 named storms this season (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which four to eight could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher). In a “normal” year, there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and two to three major hurricanes, NOAA said.

This is one of the toughest hurricane season outlooks ever made due to the abundance of atmospheric variables, said Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

The most influential variable would be the AMO (Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation). This pattern is characterized by cooling and warming of water temperatures in the Atlantic and intensity of the monsoon season over West Africa. If the Atlantic water temperature is warmer than normal and the monsoon season in West Africa is active, this pattern tends to produce more tropical systems in the Atlantic Basin. If the reverse happens, it tends to yield toward below-normal hurricane season. These patterns can last over 20 years.

Another important variable this upcoming hurricane season is the fading El Nino and forming La Nina. El Nino tends to suppress tropical activity in the Atlantic and La Nina does the opposite. This year, there is a 70 percent chance that La Nina will form by the end of this summer and early fall. Coincidentally, August, September and October happen to be the average peak of hurricane season, with 90 percent to 95 percent of tropical storms forming during this period.

I pray that we NEVER have to suffer through another Katrina…..that bitch ruined a lot of lives….mine included….for it was the aftermath of the storm that destroyed my right leg to the point of constant pain even with pain meds…..the only good thing that came out of that storm was it gave me more time to dedicate myself to my research and this blog……and the meeting of so many good friends…..so there was an upside.

See ya tomorrow….peace  out

  1. I was expecting a drum in the background do the usual ta-dum after that joke…cute.
But kidding aside, people who have never been through a hurricane don’t seem to take them seriously. They are simply afraid their windows will break and they’ll lose electricity.

    1. So true…it must be experienced to be a appreciated….Katrina lasted 14 hours and 37 minutes…..made for a long day….

  2. Good luck, my friend; being prepared is all you can do. Out here in California, we don’t get too many tropical storms, especially here in the northern half… But, we do have earthquakes, so, it’s good to always keep some water & supplies on hand for those times when we get shaken up… and, be ready to dash outside if stuff falls off the shelves….

All I can say, though, is, oh, well… such is life. Natural disasters can happen any time, any where, & the best way to be prepared is to accept it as part of life. If lightning strikes when you’re outside, well, it comes down to luck; and, a bit of common sense… Hey, sort of a metaphor for Life At Large, isn’t it?

It’s good you learned the lesson it teaches us when it does hit us hard; there is always some sort of balance that can be achieved, for all our pain must be balanced by an equal amount of joy, if we are alert enough to see it….

See ya, bro; stay dry & warm….

    1. The only good thing, if there is such a thing, is that we know ahead of time where it will hit….helps in the prep work….warm is nice but it is hot now so dry I can do….LOL chuq

  3. Great joke!
    So is this…
    Kurds new US proxies ? @barbaraslavin1 @PWoodfall @Reuters
conversaton is on my twitter page….
    Apparently so…
    for ages……
    meanwhile…
I had chronic pain 6/7 years ago for a year…awful… I researched the brain and the habit forming process in the brain that kept discharging nerve pain(and did not stop)…..found out how to stop the nerve firings which were constant..More or less instant relief.( used a scenar with sticky pads attached to my back which gave electric impulses straight into the site…L4/ L5….then came the rehabilitation….as the muscle spasms had produced locked muscles…over the damaged site and all down my legs……that was painful and it took about a year to get back my fitness…I made it back to fitness….but damm me… the site went again( last October)….no matter…back to the chiro and back to the machine….the scenar also reduces the pain…it is my constant companion.,,,it takes up to 2 years for a slipped disc to settle or an operation…no thanks)
    for your interest….

This article has some good points…..

    1. My leg was broken in 5 places and I have enough metal in there to build a small refrig…..I wish I could block it out….I am living with it but that is as best as I can do….

      1. My son ended up in a motor bike accident….2 months in hospital and then subsequent ops…left leg full of metal from hip to ankle and a large skin graft needed…he was 16/17 years of age..when you are that young the body heals…when you are old…it takes a great deal longer….if it heals….I live with mine with help. 🙂

      2. Like you, I am attached to my lap top as a result with frequent visits to get up and hobble around…..worse in the morning…I Will get better…will will will. grin…death holds no fear for me….;)

      3. Yep between the ‘puter and my books I am pretty well set in my routine now…..moving is not an option some days…..death is only the beginning….

      4. I was 61 when ‘it’ happened…..you must be born around 46/47 right?…grin

      5. I had a friend in Oz Perth…he was at art college with me….he was called up…I never saw him again…later I headed out crossed the Nullarbor Plain (bloody hot) east to Melbourne..I came back to the UK a year later ’69 via Italy and up….French student riots made us avoid Paris… ended up in Ostend…those were the days….mad.
We must be similar age…wink wink…1947.

      6. I certainly would not describe myself as an old fart! ask the dubious….I am forever young and feisty….grrrr and was …very fit…’till under a year ago.I will return to a ‘relative’ fitness soon…grin

      7. I should have clarified…he was called up…Vietnam.

      8. Not a lot! you poor bastard….needed more lessons? haha…bloody lucky you are still alive……some one is looking after you….grin

      9. Alive yes….they tried to change that….wounded 3 times….I went the 2nd time because I could not stand what my country had become….an unfeeling pack of pigs. winky wink

      10. you mean ‘unfeeling’ to your comrades in arms?

      11. Ha! you are the same age as the dubious….beat you…older, wiser and superior…..in age that is! grin
