Birth Of An American Hero

91 years ago today a true American revolutionary was born…..the country is better for knowing him.  Americans have always been proud of their revolutionary spirit and few others have exhibited that spirit as did Malcolm X…..

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

In 1963 there were deep tensions between Malcolm and Eiljah Muhammad over the political direction of the Nation. Malcolm urged that the Nation become more active in the widespread civil rights protests instead of just being a critic on the sidelines. Muhammad’s violations of the moral code of the Nation further worsened his relations with Malcolm, who was devastated when he learned that Muhammad had fathered children by six of his personal secretaries, two of whom filed paternity suits and made the issue public. Malcolm brought additional bad publicity to the Nation when he declared publicly that Pres. John F. Kennedy’s assassination was an example of “chickens coming home to roost”—a violent society suffering the consequences of violence. In response to the outrage this statement provoked, Elijah Muhammad ordered Malcolm to observe a 90-day period of silence, and the break between the two leaders became permanent.

Malcolm left the Nation in March 1964 and in the next month founded Muslim Mosque, Inc. During his pilgrimage to Mecca that same year, he experienced a second conversion and embraced Sunni Islam, adopting the Muslim name el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. Renouncing the separatist beliefs of the Nation, he claimed that the solution to racial problems in the United States lay in orthodox Islam. On the second of two visits to Africa in 1964, he addressed the Organization of African Unity (known as the African Union since 2002), an intergovernmental group established to promote African unity, international cooperation, and economic development. In 1965 he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity as a secular vehicle to internationalize the plight of black Americans and to make common cause with the people of the developing world—to move from civil rights to human rights.

The growing hostility between Malcolm and the Nation led to death threats and open violence against him. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm was assassinated while delivering a lecture at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem; three members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of the murder. He was survived by his wife, Betty Shabazz, whom he married in 1958, and six daughters. His martyrdom, ideas, and speeches contributed to the development of black nationalist ideology and the Black Power movement and helped to popularize the values of autonomy and independence among African Americans in the 1960s and ’70s.

He was an American hero and should be treated as such…..to ignore his contributions because of color or ideology is a dis-service to the nation and the man.

Damn!  He sure did know me…….

Healthcare Is Healthcare

What a marvelous topic…it has been the butt of jokes and the stuff of rants for years….not to mention all the wasted time Congress has spent on the issue…..is the ACA a bad idea or is it just a bad idea because it came from a president that some dislike?

With all the back and forth over Obamacare does any one have any thing positive to say about it that is more along the facts and not a rant…..

I do!  I do! (he said waving his hand in the air like a crazed primate)…..

For the first time ever, fewer than 10% of Americans lack health insurance, according to data released Tuesday by the CDC. And CNBC calls that “a clear sign of ObamaCare’s impact.” In 2015, only 9.1% of Americans—about 28.6 million people—were uninsured. That’s down from 14.2% in 2013 when ObamaCare really started to go into effect, the Hill reports. That drop amounts to another 16.2 million Americans who now have health insurance. “Today’s report is further proof that our country has made undeniable and historic strides thanks to the Affordable Care Act.” Sylvia Burwell, secretary of health and human services, tells CNBC. “Our country ought to be proud of how far we’ve come and where we’re going.”

But regardless of ObamaCare’s success in reducing the ranks of the uninsured—the Obama administration estimates more than 20 million Americans have gained insurance since the ACA passed in 2010—the Hill reports that Republicans still plan to use it as a wedge issue in November. Donald Trump and Senate Republicans believe hitting Hillary Clinton over ObamaCare will propel them to victories. “This healthcare law has been devastating to the Democratic Party,” John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, tells the Hill.

Is there any other facts that pertain to our health care?

Oh so much more…..since Bernie entered into the race for the Dem nomination there has been a new call for a single payer health care system…..and surprisingly enough a good portion of the populace agree with Bernie……

A majority of Americans support the single-payer, “Medicare-for-all” style health care system proposed by presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

A new Gallup poll found that almost six in 10 U.S. adults would prefer a federally funded health care system that provides insurance for all Americans

Gallup presented the three leading presidential candidates’ proposed health care policies, without naming the candidates, and asked participants what they thought of them. A majority of Americans agreed with Sanders’ proposal, without knowing that it was his.  (read one…..)

With Superdelegates, Who Needs Voters?

If you partake in the American political system by voting for your favorite candidate then you should be commended…..but if you look beyond the thrill of participation then you will see that the voter is not really needed at all.

About now some will think that I have flipped my ever-loving mind, right?

If you are a Dem voter then there are delegates called the “superdelegates” these are people that are pledged to one candidate or another….the problem is this election most of these pledged themselves to Clinton before she had any opposition and they are staying there….

The number is large enough that voters are not needed after a certain point in the primaries….but check out what I am going on about……

Every election cycle, family members call to ask how they should vote on propositions and for which candidates. Our readers frequently ask the LA Progressive to prepare a “progressive slate.” They know we work hard to stay on top of issues while also keeping tabs on the positions candidates have taken. That requires a lot of effort but staying informed is essential for democracy to work. Thomas Jefferson said, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.”

We agree. We like freedom. So using our energy to educate ourselves and others seemed like a worthwhile expenditure of time and money.

Well, turns out, that expended energy may have all been for naught. In other words, keeping tabs on the goings on in the political sphere could have been a big waste of time, especially in light of the transcripts uncovered by Branko Marcetic, an investigative journalist from In These Times. Marcetic has uncovered documents that reveal the true reason that the Democratic Party instituted the superdelegate system. It appears that the intention, all along, was to take power away from “the people” and put it into the hands of a concentrated few.

This is NOT a democratic way to pick a nominee……it is what is always being done…..the system is gamed in favor of a certain candidate……

Time for this stupid practice to end….let the voter decide who the nominee should be….PERIOD!

Air Crash–Just What The Media Needed

Over the night we have had another air crash and the victims are the 66 most important people of the day….

A flight from Paris to Cairo carrying 56 passengers and 10 crew disappeared from radar early Thursday morning, the airline says. EgyptAir Flight 804 was lost from radar at 2:45am local time when it was flying at 37,000 feet, the airline says. It says the Airbus A320 had vanished 10 miles after it entered Egyptian airspace. Egyptian armed forces are searching for the plane, which was carrying 56 passengers, including one child and two babies, and 10 crew. EgyptAir later confirmed the nationalities of those on board as including 15 French passengers, 30 Egyptians, one Briton, two Iraqis, one Kuwaiti, one Saudi, one Sudanese, one Chadian, one Portuguese, one Algerian, and one Canadian, the AP reports.

A tragedy indeed but why am I so sarcastic about the reporting?

This is a story that the media desperately needed…..for a couple of days they have harped on the mini-riot at the Nevada delegate selection meeting…..where the Bernie supporters were angered and began protesting….and the story was reported by a reputable journalist that even chairs were thrown…..death threats to other DNC officials……well yesterday the story was developing that it was all a false report and all the news channels had run with the lie…….embarrassing, right?

Jon Ralston, the dean of political reporting in Nevada, has spread nothing less than a pack of lies about what went down at the state’s Democratic convention on Saturday. And the fact averse oligarchic national media has run completely riot with the provable falsehoods. No chairs were thrown at the convention Saturday. No death threats were made against the chair of the convention Roberta Lange. And Bernie Sanders delegates were not simply mad because their louder shouting was ignored.

Source: The Faux Fracas in Nevada: How a Reporter Manufactured a Riot

Now the MSM has a disaster that they can fixate on and speculate their butts off and never have to admit that they reported a lie…..the American people will be so enthralled with the hunt for this plane and the only thing they will remember about this mini-riot is the lies spread by the media.

Since there were NO Americans on the flight and it has nothing to do with the US there is NO need for days of endless speculation….the only reason is to divert the news from the lies that they have reported.

It is not about the plane but rather about saving face.

The Hillary Clinton/Neocon Merger

By now my readers know that I will NOT be voting for Hillary and her entourage in November…there are many reason why I dislike her…..she is a candidate of the 1% and she is a bigger neocon than GW ever was…..all we have to look forward to if she is elected is more of the same crap we have today…..if she is a progressive then I am a Mexican gardener……

But since I believe the foreign policy will be the most important issue in the next few years…..yes the economy needs repair but we are chasing too many wars for too few good reasons…..and Hillary and her neocon buddies will rule the day….

In this crazy year — actually a non-stop circus for 18 months — the press has engaged in an orgy of vitriol and bloodletting against the presumptive Republican nominee for the presidency with a hysteria I have never seen in my life against any mainstream party candidate. And the Donald probably deserves a great deal of it.

Yes, we can all see now how Trump is engaged in shredding, maybe even remaking the Republican party — creative destruction. That, in the view of many including myself, is basically a good thing, given how far off the rails of reality the party has drifted.

Trump has trashed the neocon war party, blamed George W. Bush for the debacle in Iraq and elsewhere, wants to throttle way back on foreign wars, and has declared a readiness to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin — otherwise treated in the US press as toxic and satanic. (Though even Chuck Hagel, former Secretary of Defense, recently had the temerity to suggest that things with Russia were getting dangerous and that we should be in constant dialog with Putin.)

Do you want to see this country in more and more wars?  That is what you will have if you vote for Hillary and her neocon buddies……

While I am not impressed with too many of the candidates this time…..but Hillary is a nightmare waiting to happen.

I weep for your children.

Defeating ISIS

Everybody knows who or what ISIS….or is it IS….no wait it is ISIL….no wait…..the subject is so confusing that there are very few that have any idea what this group is other than Muslims……and because they claim to be then ALL Muslims must be in league with this barbarous organization….this group is almost as confusing as using the term Terrorism…..it is all semantics with little knowledge….mostly regurgitation from lesser informed sources.

That is okay because these lesser informed dolts know how to defeat ISIS and none of their solutions take any thought or planning……just rhetoric for the peasants……

Personally, I would like to hear a plan for this defeat that we hear so much about…..I found one plan……

The islamic state poses a grave danger to the United states and its allies in the
middle east and around the world reports that it is not currently planning an attack against the American homeland are little comfort. its location, the resources it controls, the skill and determination of its leaders and fighters, and its demonstrated lethality distinguish it from other al-Qaeda-like
groups. Its ability to offer safe-haven and support to terrorists planning attacks against us is beyond any terrorist threat we have ever seen. The thousands of American and European citizens who are fighting alongside the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra in Iraq and Syria constitute an unprecedented threat to our security regardless of whether those groups intend to attack us. the
islamic state is a clear and present danger to the security of the United states. it must be defeated. Developing a strategy to accomplish that goal is daunting.
the situation today is so bad and the momentum is so much in the
wrong direction that it is impossible to articulate a direct path to an acceptable endstate in Iraq and Syria. American neglect of the deteriorating situations in both countries has deprived us of the understanding and even basic ground intelligence needed to build a strategy. We must therefore pursue an iterative approach that tests basic assumptions, develops our understanding,
builds partnerships with willing parties on the ground, especially the sunni Arabs in Iraq who will be essential to set conditions
for more decisive operations to follow.

House to debate repealing 2001 war authorization

Finally!  Someone has grown a set and stepped up to do the right thing……

After the 9/11 attacks the US Congress passed the 2001 war authorization…..and ever since it has been used for the constant wars that we are fighting for the last 15 years.

The House will debate an amendment on Wednesday whether to repeal a 2001 authorization for use of military force that the administration is using for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The amendment, introduced by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), would take effect 90 days after the defense bill is passed, and force the administration to seek new authority from Congress to wage its military campaign against ISIS.

The debate does not mean that it will be repealed…but at least it is a start to control the endless wars that we are now involved in fighting.

What’s Killing the American Middle Class?

For decades I have been watching the middle class slowly disappear…..for me it was most pronounced with the election of Bill Clinton and the leadership of the DLC……I admit it has been in decline before he was elected but with that election the downward spiral became more pronounced…..NAFTA was a horrible idea for the working class of the US and yet we are doing similar agreements almost every administration……

So the question should be…..What is killing the American middle class?

Richard Eskow: Americans work more hours than citizens of any Western European country, a burden that keeps them away from their families, friends, and personal activities.

A new study by the Pew Research Center spurred a rash of headlines last week about “the dying middle class.” But the word “dying” might be more appropriate if we were watching the regrettable but inevitable effects of natural forces at work. We’re not. We’re seeing the fruits of deliberate action – and sometimes of deliberate inaction – at the highest levels of power.

The great American middle was never large enough, even at its height. It always excluded too many people – sometimes, shamefully, merely for their skin color. And now, instead of growing and becoming more inclusive, it’s fading away instead.

It’s true that the middle class is dying, but not from natural causes. It’s being killed. What – and, for that matter, who – is responsible for its slow death?

Sadly I do not see the situation improving much no matter who is elected….but as usual we Americans will soldier on and make others rich…..it is the American way.

Anti-war Is Pro-American

Yes Irene I am an unapologetic anti-war supporter…..my days in the service of my country in Vietnam has taught me the folly of war.  It is an obscenity that needs to be experienced to understand.

But these days to be so is not as popular as one would think……these days we see “bad guys” behind every international incident…..and some seem to think that if you oppose war that you are some sort of traitor to the country.

Even the “god child” of the conservatives, Thomas Jefferson, was not a big supporter of war….

Thomas Jefferson declared the American way of interacting with the world to be “peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations – entangling alliances with none.” However, over the course of at least the past seven decades, the US government has turned this admonition on its head. Peace? The US government has waged wars of […]

You see people anti-war is pro-American no matter what the supreme nationalists want you to believe……

I bring this up right now because the US is poking Russia in the eye….yet again…..and I am afraid in these days that it could escalate beyond the rhetoric of the original Cold War…..

If the United States ever ends up stumbling into a major conventional or nuclear war with Russia, the culprit will likely be two military boondoggles that refused to die when their primary mission ended with the demise of the Soviet Union: NATO and the U.S. anti-ballistic missile (ABM) program.

The “military-industrial complex” that reaps hundreds of billions of dollars annually from support of those programs got a major boost this week when NATO established its first major missile defense site at an air base in Romania, with plans to build a second installation in Poland by 2018.

Source: Escalations in a New Cold War – Consortiumnews

Contrary to the words of Jefferson the US….is neither searching for peace or commerce (other than making the toads in the M-IC wealthier than they are now) or avoiding international entanglements….

And then there is the Russian reaction to the new NATO missile shield…..

Sorry but all this sounds like the beginning of the original Cold War……

With the problems in the Middle East….and now this…..how can it all end?

With my last breath I will still say that there are better ways to solve problems and situations than going to war.

Sanders’ Potential Foreign Policy

I know I harp on the importance of foreign policy in this election…..and I will admit that I am a non-interventionist…..I do not think that going to war can solve the problems in the world….I do say that there are times when war can be justified….

To say that I am not impressed with the foreign policy of Hillary or Trump would be an understatement….they are both neocons regardless what they would like to label themselves.

Likewise with Bernie….but I do not think that he is a neocon and his lack of any foreign relations experience could bite him in the butt if he were to be elected……

I am always look for articles about the candidates foreign policy positions to help my readers understand why this is so important…..

I found an article that presses the issue that Bernie’s lack of substantial experience in foreign policy could be a plus and a positive sign……

Progressives like LA Progressive editor Dick Price have indicated many domestic reasons why progressives prefer Bernie Sanders to Hillary Clinton. A recent New York Times editorial also emphasizes his domestic stances but concedes that “Mrs. Clinton outflanks him on both knowledge and practice of foreign policy.” This essay, however, will argue that we voters should pay more attention to Sanders’ dovish approach to foreign policy, as contrasted to the more hawkish and belligerent positions of Clinton and Trump. As president, he would be less likely than Clinton or Trump to involve us in foreign entanglements that would cause more human and economic pain and divert attention and resources from important domestic problems.

Source: Sanders’ Potential Foreign Policy: An Ignored Strength? – LA Progressive

I do not know for sure if I can agree with this position….for one, Bernie would have to deal with a Congress that is mostly neocons and neo-liberals….in other words pro-war…..that alone would prevent any sound and rational policies almost non-existent…..

What say you after reading the piece…..is it a positive or a negative?
