But Is It Kosher?

It has been a helluva week…..some great comments here on IST…..dealing with the pain of an accident from 10 years ago…..lots of politics to make me ill and some real good exchanges on other blogs….all in all a good week.

I close my week out with a post on something that I found and just could not let it go past without spotlighting it.

For Jews some things are Kosher and some are not….from what I understand, granted not much, there is a certain code that must be followed for anything to be labeled “Kosher”…..method of slaughter, et al…..

I read a piece yesterday that took me aback…..can marijuana ever be Kosher?

Good news, stoners who celebrate Pesach! Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, whom the Times of Israel identifies as “the leading living ultra-Orthodox halachic authority,” has ruled that marijuana is kosher for Passover. Kanievsky has said pot can be eaten or smoked during the holiday, though there’s one tiny catch: it should be used as part of a medical treatment program

So it is Kosher for Passover and then it is not?

How does that work?  Must it be chopped with a special knife?  Maybe one has to wear some sort of secret underwear…..can something be Kosher once a year?

  1. Though I’ve never actually seen or studied the rules for determining what is or isn’t kosher, the pattern seems to have more to do with the techniques used to prepare the food than the food itself. The ancient Tribe had some rather weird beliefs about certain animals, and plants; combine those with the delusions involved in trying to figure out what a God thinks they should do, and you end up with some odd rules, for sure….

I would guess this is just another way to try to make sense out of something that really has no basis for existing at all… The delusions that created the rules in the first place cannot ever actually be reconciled in reality, for they are not based on anything that actually exists there… Why should we expect any of it to make sense? It starts with a false assertion, based entirely on assumptions with no evidence… I don’t care who you are, you cannot make something out of nothing, no matter how powerful an imagination one has….

      1. LOL…. I think you may be right, about the underwear, not the knife… For meat, I know the knife has to be a certain kind, and never have touched the blood of certain animals, or some such nonsense. They’re just stupid enough I would believe it if the rule was, only a bearded man wearing wool underwear can cut the meat, or it becomes unkosher…. I’ve seen a couple of the rules that are just that idiotic….

If you start with BS, you don’t end up with Hollandaise… I’m a chef, I know.

      2. Nope…that only works in the other direction… we can make crap out of a sirloin, but, the other way, like kosher, makes no sense…

      3. I have never understood dietary restrictions….if you are hungry then f*cking eat…it is that simple. chuq

      4. I’m with you on that one… I’m a chef, & changes to what I’m making due to religious restrictions don’t make any sense. Allergies, yes; delusions, no. They can find somewhere else to eat, where they’ll make changes for them due to insanity…

      5. If I owned my own place, there wouldn’t be any salt or pepper on the table; you’d have to ask for it, and, would not be invited back if requested… Yes, tastes are different, but, when you eat out, you go to find new tastes, not your same old same old… I’m a little harsh about it, because I don’t let food leave the kitchen unless I KNOW it’s right.

Hmph… guess that’s where my curmudgeon got its start….

      6. I am a traditionalists…..the food should be prepared the way it was intended….I do not like something tarted up to make it “fusion” or whatever they are calling this abortion…chuq

      7. Well, I like traditional, too, but, there are some damn good new ideas for combining different cuisines. I agree most fusion foods are absurd, and not really tasty, but, there are some pretty good Hawaiian dishes that go well with American twists to them. I also like to use Chinese spices & sauces with regional dishes from other countries… But, damn it, they should TASTE it before trying to push it; sometimes I wonder what they were thinking….
