I have written on the “race conversation” that all say we need…..and as usual we as Americans are all talk….that conversation my never take place….but it sounds good to call for it……
I read this piece by Kristof and found it very enlightening….please read and let my know your thoughts…..
“What we whites notice is blacks who have “made it” — including President Obama — so we focus on progress and are oblivious to the daily humiliations that African-Americans endure when treated as second-class citizens.”
This has always been a big part of our failure to address racism. We acknowledge that blacks are no longer under the yolk of slavery and assume they are all equal to advance themselves as whites are. But as Senator Cory Booker’s experience in 1992 demonstrated, it just isn’t so.
Well said Larry…..after the Civil Rights thing we accept that they are capable but we want them to ‘act’ white….sorry not gonna happen…
I don’t belong to the “we” whites. Why group all whites in one pool? Sounds a bit racist.
I think it is more like the consensus…..where I live it is pretty much like that…..and I live in a more progressive part of the state….and that is scary…to say the least….
So the consensus depends on where you live and if you have been a victim of a crime. I guess the blacks think that Holder and Obama are their to help them, they aren’t they are there to line their pockets and the likes of the Sharptons of the worlds. If Obama, Holder and Sharpton cared, they would have gone to Chicago and help clean up their own streets.
What point would their appearance in Ferguson or wherever been a good thing….they are screwed no matter what they do……yes it depends on just that….if you live in a upscale suburb you are less likely to know what these people are feeling…..you can sympathize but that does not mean you can understand…..
I don’t get the distruction of the businesses that is there to serve the community. What good did all that distruction do? Nothing.
You are correct…it did nothing except give the media something to fixate on…
