Remember The “Havana Syndrome”?

Probably not….and since this news has somehow slipped dfrom the public’s mind I shall help them recall….

Havana Syndrome is a set of unexplained medical symptoms first experienced by U.S. State Department personnel stationed in Cuba beginning in late 2016. At the time, those diplomats had been dispatched to Cuba as part of the rapprochement between the two countries begun under President Barack Obama, after decades of severed diplomatic relations between them. The emergence of the ailments on Cuban soil strained those developing ties.

It was a big deal back in the day…..well all the accusations may have been pure BS…..

There has been much hype in recent years over headaches and other symptoms US diplomats and spies have experienced while deployed overseas. This phenomenon has been nicknamed the “Havana Syndrome” since the first reports of the symptoms came from diplomats in Cuba.

The assumption is that the mysterious illness is the work of a hostile foreign power, such as China or Russia, using microwave weapons. But NBC News reported Wednesday that the CIA has ruled out the possibility that the majority of Havana Syndrome cases were “the result of a sustained global campaign by a hostile power.”

The report reads: “The idea that widespread brain injury symptoms have been caused by Russia or another foreign power targeting Americans around the world, either to harm them or to collect intelligence, has been deemed unfounded, the sources said.”

According to NBC, hundreds of US diplomats and spies have reported Havana Syndrome symptoms and many are “disappointed” that the CIA isn’t blaming a foreign power. But the CIA assessment is not the only reason to believe the syndrome is not an attack on US personnel.

Many of the diplomats that reported the symptoms said they heard strange, loud buzzing noises. A 2018 State Department report that was recently obtained by Buzzfeed found that the culprit of the loud noise was likely local crickets. Separately, a group of scientists analyzed a recording of the mysterious sound and concluded that the noise was the call of a Caribbean species of cricket.

So all that chest thumping and finger pointing was actually the work of a cricket…..that poor cricket was used to tighten sanctions on Cuba.

Closing Thought–25Jan22

There has surfaced a memo/EO that would in effect have started the coup on 06 January 2021…..never before seen by the public…..

Among the records that Donald Trump’s lawyers tried to shield from Jan. 6 investigators are a draft executive order that would have directed the defense secretary to seize voting machines and a document titled “Remarks on National Healing.”

POLITICO has reviewed both documents. The text of the draft executive order is published here for the first time.

The executive order — which also would have appointed a special counsel to probe the 2020 election — was never issued. The remarks are a draft of a speech Trump gave the next day. Together, the two documents point to the wildly divergent perspectives of White House advisers and allies during Trump’s frenetic final weeks in office.

It’s not clear who wrote either document. But the draft executive order is dated Dec. 16, 2020, and is consistent with proposals that lawyer Sidney Powell made to the then-president. On Dec. 18, 2020, Powell, former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump administration lawyer Emily Newman, and former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne met with Trump in the Oval Office.

In that meeting, Powell urged Trump to seize voting machines and to appoint her as a special counsel to investigate the election, according to Axios.

The order empowers the defense secretary to “seize, collect, retain and analyze all machines, equipment, electronically stored information, and material records required for retention under” a U.S. law that relates to preservation of election records. It also cites a lawsuit filed in 2017 against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Additionally, the draft order would have given the defense secretary 60 days to write an assessment of the 2020 election. That suggests it could have been a gambit to keep Trump in power until at least mid-February of 2021.

The full text of the never-issued executive order can be read here.

Damn!

That was as close as this country has come to a coup in 200 years.

This is scary and that chance has not dissipated in the year since the attempt.

The Cost Of War

I will give Biden his props for ending the Afghan War.

Let’s take a look at the cost of war……

Afghanistan cost the US taxpayers. $2.3 trillion…..about $300 million a day…..think about those totals…..what good could that cash have done here in this country?

Some of the coasts of this war is the contractor abuse and fraud…..

It’s well known that waste, fraud, and abuse were widespread among contractors working for the US government in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the negative consequences of the heavy reliance on contractors to help wage wars go well beyond that to the question of whether and how the United States wages war.

The issue of waste in America’s endless wars should certainly not be ignored, given its immense costs to taxpayers. As early as 2011 — ten years into the Afghan war — the congressionally-mandated Commission on Wartime Contracting estimated that there had already been between $31 billion and $60 billion in waste related to contracting in the two war zones. There has been no comparable analysis since, but it’s safe to say that there have been tens of billions more in waste — including criminal fraud — in the most recent ten years of war. The Special Investigator General for Afghan Reconstruction has produced scores of reports documenting waste in Afghanistan, even as it has helped convict 160 companies and individuals of fraud and saved taxpayers $3.8 billion in the process.

All of this occurred in the context of the record surge in Pentagon spending that accompanied and was publicly justified by what was originally known as the Global War on Terror. As I noted in a joint report of the Center for International Policy and the Brown Costs of War Project published in September 2021, the post-9/11 surge in Pentagon spending resulted in $14 trillion in Pentagon spending from 2001 to 2020, up to half of which went to contractors. Among the report’s findings were that the biggest beneficiaries by far were the top five weapons contractors, namely Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman. These five companies alone have split $2.1 trillion in contracts since 2001. To give some sense of scale, Lockheed Martin alone received $75 billion in Pentagon contracts in 2020, which was more than one and one-half times the combined budgets of the State Department and the Agency for International Development. If the Biden administration is truly to put diplomacy first, this extreme militarization of our budget must be corrected.

https://inkstickmedia.com/how-private-contractors-disguise-the-real-costs-of-war/

Privatization of war has cost this country dearly…..

It is time for diplomacy to return to the world and armed conflict should be the last resort and not the first knee jerk action.

But thanks to the M-IC this idea will not see the light of day….war is great business.

“Join the Army–Visit beautiful and exotic places and kill the people”

That was a poster and slogan from back in the 60s at protests against war…..

It seems that the US military is offering the one thing that most Americans understand….MONEY.

The problem is declining enlistments…..

Labor shortages aren’t just hitting the private sector during the pandemic. The military has been affected, too, though the US Army is now offering a carrot it hopes will bring in more recruits. An enlistment bonus of up to $50,000—the Army’s biggest ever—is now on the table for newbies who embark on certain career paths and agree to a six-year active-duty enlistment, reports NBC News. “This is an opportunity to entice folks to consider the Army,” Brig. Gen. John Cushing says in a release. The Army hopes to use the financial incentives for jobs that are hard to fill or that it has a special need to fill at the moment, especially those that keep training bases up and running.

In the past, the most a recruit could hope for in terms of a bonus was $40,000. Now, officials have tacked on “critical accession” payments, as well as “quick-ship” bonuses if the recruit agrees to head off to basic training within 90 days. The example the release offers is someone who signs up to be an air and missile defense crew member, which comes with a $40,000 career-based incentive. Currently, that role also comes with a $9,000 critical accession bonus, and if the recruit packs up for basic training within the next 90 days, they can tack on an extra $1,000 quick-ship bonus to reach the $50,000 maximum.

That cap will admittedly be difficult to reach, as it’s for the most elite positions, such as signals intelligence and Special Forces, notes the AP. Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen, who heads up the Army’s recruiting division, tells the outlet that recruiters have faced big challenges over the past two years, as the pandemic has prompted school shutdowns—”we lost a full class of young men and women that we didn’t have contact with, face to face”—and a competitive job market that’s been luring young people who might otherwise consider the military.

The Army is counting on greed to fill the ranks….let me ask is that money worth the chance of spending a life trying to recover from PTSD or debilitating wounds?

Is your life worth $50K?

Worse Than Trump?

Could anything in government be worse than Trump?

To answer that question let us go to the polls…..

Wrapping up his first year in office, President Biden is “undeniably weaker than [when] he began it, with his poll numbers having plummeted and his party in danger of being swept out of power on Capitol Hill,” reports Politico. A look at the victories, the failures, the challenges ahead, and how American voters see it all:

  • Grades worse than Trump’s: Biden fares worse than his predecessor did at this point in his presidency, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll out Wednesday. Some 37% of 2,005 registered voters give Biden an “F” grade, compared to 31% who assign an “A” or “B” grade. In 2018, 35% of respondents gave Trump a failing mark, while 34% gave him an “A” or “B.”
  • Unhappy Democrats: More than 85% of Republicans and almost half of independents give Biden a “D” or “F.” Democrats have their gripes, too, with 25% assigning a “C” grade and 11% assigning a “D” or “F.” However, about 37% of Democrats and 18% of overall respondents give Biden an “A” for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • More approval ratings: Biden’s approval rating stands at 40% in the Politico/Morning Consult poll, with 56% disapproval—compared to 44% approval for Trump in early 2018. Gallup also describes a 40% approval rating this month, but puts Biden’s first-year average approval rating at 48.9%—higher than Trump’s 38.4%, which is the worst on record for a commander in chief, per the Hill. Biden’s rating reached as high as 57% in the first half of 2021 before falling to 43% in late summer.

Victories: On the other hand, there have been wins for Biden, among them the passage of a $1.9 trillion pandemic relief bill and a massive vaccine distribution program, per the BBC. Politico points to passage of a $1 trillion infrastructure bill to fix decaying roads, bridges, and water pipes, while CNN describes “a drop in poverty” and “a boom in hiring.” Some 6.4 million jobs have been added, per the BBC.

‘The job is not done’: With continued inflation, a threat of conflict with Russia, and the potential failure of voting rights legislation looming, Biden’s team now looks to reassure voters. “President Biden was elected to a four-year term, not a one-year term,” White House chief of staff Ron Klain tells Politico. White House press secretary Jen Psaki adds Biden entered office under “an incredibly difficult circumstance,” per CNN. And “the job is not done.”

  • Failures: That drop coincided with the deadly US withdrawal from Afghanistan, which followed Biden’s premature declaration of “independence” from the coronavirus. Amidst the virus’ continued spread, the country remains “as exhausted, angry and divided as ever,” despite Biden’s promise to bring unity, per CNN. Even Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledges a “level of malaisse.

None of this looks good for 2022 or 2024.

I told everyone a year ago that things would not get better with the Biden win….just that there would be a change in the White House.

But what will be our choices in 2024…..a raving lunatic or more of the same?

I weep for this country….as I have been doing since 1992.

That “Plant-Based” Fad

Does anyone else sick of the term?

I am seriously over the whole silly fad of ‘plant-based’ anything. It is only a marketing ploy to get get idiots to spend their cash on something that is not all that healthy to begin with….

Say what?

Xanthe Clay has no problem with the idea of people eating less meat and more vegetables. It would not only be healthier for humans but for the planet as well. But in an essay at the Telegraph, Clay has a warning for people chowing down on plant-based burgers, or chicken, or whatever: A lot of these products are ultra-processed and far from health food. “Junk” is actually the word Clay uses. And while they have a place in diets, that place should be the same one relegated to other types of junk food. As such, they should be eaten sparingly. “That lovely word ‘plant’ has a whiff of nature, countryside, health, fresh air, natural leafiness,” writes Clay. But many of the products flying this flag would be better associated with a manufacturing plant than one of the natural variety.

“(P)lease, don’t kid yourself that this is healthy food,” writes Clay. “While health experts exhort us to eat more vegetables, this isn’t what they mean. They mean actual vegetables, you know, cabbage and carrots and cauliflowers. The plant-based kind.” The problem is that food manufacturers have predictably saturated the market (and the airwaves) with products posing as healthy because of a “plant-based” label. Read the full essay, in which Clay runs through some preferred meat alternatives.

Plant based eggs?   Seriously?

I even read of a sugar substitute that sells itself as a plant based alternative…..if I am not mistaken I believe sugar is plant based.

These people are worried about the production of meat as a problem to the planet…. but has anyone thought about the increase in agriculture would do to the world?  Think pesticide run-off.

Please be wary of these slugs that are pretending to care about the planet….when all they care about is duping the consumer into buying more expensive ‘food stuffs’….has little to do with saving anything…..especially not money.

Saturday’s News Round-Up

The weekend begins and as my usual tact I will give news that did not make the MSM for various reasons.

First, the climate change (that issue that does not exist in some minds)…..

When Chris Rogers returned to the NSW Central Coast after a stint living overseas, he was eager to embrace the quintessential Australian lifestyle — a home where his kids could swim in the ocean whenever they liked and he could walk along the beach he loves every day.

But more than a year after powerful swells battered Wamberal Beach, causing massive erosion beneath the waterfront properties, he’s been left fearing his home could be washed away in the next storm surge.

“We’ve worked our whole life, this is our family home, and to look at your kids and not be able to comfort them is scary,” Rogers says.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-17/will-climate-change-put-an-end-to-coastal-living/100504100

Next is a subject that would make an interesting scifi movie……

Earth formed 4.5 billion years or so ago. Ever since then, it’s been slowly cooling on the inside.

While the surface and atmosphere temperatures fluctuate over the eons (and yes, those external temperatures are currently warming), the molten interior – the beating heart of our planet – has been cooling this entire time.

That’s not a glib metaphor. The rotating, convecting dynamo deep inside Earth is what generates its vast magnetic field, an invisible structure that scientists believe protects our world and allows life to thrive. In addition, mantle convection, tectonic activity and volcanism are thought to help sustain life through the stabilization of global temperatures and the carbon cycle.

Because Earth’s interior is still cooling, and will continue to do so, this means that eventually the interior will solidify, and the geological activity will cease, possibly turning Earth into a barren rock, akin to Mars or Mercury. New research has revealed that may happen sooner than previously thought.

Not good news…but what the Hell, right?

Finally more idiot news.

These days the younger generation cannot exist without their energy drinks for whatever reason…..everything needs to be flavored now the biggest insult….Coke with coffee…..

Coke with Coffee is a soda that yells at you with sugar. It writes flavor emails in ALL CAPS. It has zero chill — and double the caffeine of normal Coca-Cola.

The newest spinoff from Coca-Cola has mistakenly been called coffee in a can. That’s not really the case. This is very much still soda, just with some coffee vibes. With that said, it’s still potential nightmare fuel if it somehow ends up in the hands of a child.

Let’s use a beer analogy. If Coca-Cola is the normal flagship IPA from a big brewery, Coke with Coffee is the wacky, heavy double IPA that comes out as more of an over-the-top gimmick made with crazy ingredients.

https://www.masslive.com/food/2021/01/coke-with-coffee-review-i-drank-all-3-flavors-so-you-dont-have-to.html

AS a consumer of coffee….I do not want to dick it up….black no sugar is my choice…..I want it to taste like coffee….nothing else.

Now for the most useless news…..and it involves a toilet….

Back in 2003, somebody flushed a toilet in the middle of the night in Italy and the couple in the neighboring apartment thought, boy that was loud. Nineteen years later, that couple near La Spezia has finally won their legal case against the neighbors for too-loud flushing at night, reports the Times of London. The case reached the nation’s highest court, which cited principles laid out by the European Court of Human Rights in deciding for the couple, notes the Washington Post. The toilet was not only loud, it was reportedly used often—”aggravated by frequent night use,” is how the court put it.

The judges ruled that the flushing compromised the couple’s quality of life by disrupting their sleep and jeopardizing their health. As the case inched its way through the Italian legal system over the years, the full story emerged. Four brothers owned the apartment with the loud toilet, and they installed the water tank in a shared wall that happened to be the couple’s bedroom wall. Italy’s supreme court ordered the brothers to move the tank and pay the couple 500 euros (or about $565) for every year it was in place, reports the Guardian. That will amount to about $10,700 for the couple.

I feel so much better now that justice has been served.

Have a great day, my friends.

Do you feel guilty about anything?

Well in Florida (why is it always Florida) never fear you can be forbidden from making someone feel guilty.

A Florida bill pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to prohibit public schools and private businesses from making white people feel “discomfort” when they teach students or train employees about discrimination in the nation’s past received its first approval Tuesday. The Senate Education Committee backed the bill that takes aim at critical race theory—though it’s not mentioned explicitly—on party lines, with Republicans in favor and Democrats opposed, the AP reports. Democrats argued the bill isn’t needed, would lead to frivolous lawsuits, and would amount to censorship in schools. They asked, without success, for real-life examples of teachers or businesses telling students or employees that they are racist because of their race.

“This bill’s not for Blacks, this bill was not for any other race. This was directed to make whites not feel bad about what happened years ago,” said state Sen. Shevrin Jones, who is Black. “At no point did anyone say white people should be held responsible for what happened, but what I would ask my white counterparts is, are you an enabler of what happened or are you going to say we must talk about history?” DeSantis held a news conference last month in which he called critical race theory “crap” and said he would seek legislation that would allow parents to sue schools and employees to sue employers if they were subject to such teachings.

Critical race theory is a way of thinking about US history through the lens of racism. The bill reads in part: “An individual, by virtue of his or her race or sex, does not bear responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex. An individual should not be made to feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race.” Republican Sen. Manny Diaz, the bill’s sponsor, said it is not about ignoring the “dark” parts of American history, but rather ensuring that people are not blamed for sins of the past. The bill now heads to Senate debate, per ABC News.

Just another waste of time by a damn Repub….this does nothing to improve the society and move the state forward…..just another wedge issue to keep the slobbering Right in tow.

Deputizing a Nation

Recently I wrote about the amount of vigilantes that are hitting our streets….all claim to be ‘policing’ the society….but read it for yourself……https://lobotero.com/2022/01/04/vigilantes-on-parade/

Think back to the days of the Nazis when people were used to spy and inform on friends and family….or the East German Stasi that used people in the same manner…..and that disgusting trend is appearing here in the US…….

So now Texas deputizes its citizens to snitch on women getting abortions, while Oklahoma authorizes its parents to police school libraries. If an Oklahoma parent objects to a book in the school library, and it’s not gone in 24 hours, the librarian gets fired. Clearly this new vigilantism is a trend. Constitutional rights to privacy or against censorship are flying out the window.

What next? Well, think about it: Deputizing Montanans to rat on neighbors who won’t hunt wolves, or empowering oil and gas companies to sue pipeline protestors. Deputizing busybodies to report their neighbors for using birth control. Rewarding Floridians for informing the local prosecutor on anyone who uses the phrase “climate change” (after all, former governor Rick Scott banned the term, an imbecility he should never be allowed to forget). Authorizing anyone to punch anyone who tells them to wear a face mask. Deputizing parents to sue school systems that require ANY vaccines. Allowing anyone to ram their car into anyone they think “might be antifa.” Basically, just name anything currently annoying the idiotic average American reactionary and before long that creature will be deputized to take action against it, as if it were as objectionable as cannibalism. The list is endless.

So it’s time to turn this stupid fad on its head. California’s plan to deputize its citizens against gun manufacturers blazes the way. Governor Gavin Newsom produced this stupendous idea and he’s to be commended. If Californians sue gun manufacturers out of business – voila! No more school slaughters. Who cares about the second amendment, especially when Oklahoma already ditched the first? Clearly, it’s open season on the bill of rights – most of which American morons oppose on principle anyway.

Blue states could also deputize their citizens to sue hospitals that give beds to unvaccinated covid patients. It sounds nasty, but vaccine advocates will no doubt argue that anti-vaxxers are there by choice. They opted not to protect themselves against a lethal plague. And how is suing the hospital and doctors that enable their lousy choice any different from suing a doctor for providing an abortion to a 12-year-old raped by her HIV-positive uncle? Once you start chopping down constitutional rights, soon the whole forest disappears. But hey, Homo Americanus clearly thinks those rights are defective, insofar as he can be said to think at all.

Deputized Nation

Like I stated earlier….this is a disgusting trend to turn neighbor on neighbor…..I agree that something needs to be done to stop this slide in our rights.

If you are voting then know what you are voting for….not some face or some lameass slogan….this country deserves better from its people.

2024 Is Not That Far Away

I keep reading the hope that all this societal division can be overcome with a successful 2024 election…..I find it a delusion.

Here are the possible 2024 GOP candidates (this could all change but for now these seem like the most logical choices the GOP has to choose from…..

10. Mike Pompeo

9. Greg Abbott

8. Chris Christie

7. Donald Trump Jr.

6. Ted Cruz

5. Mike Pence

4. Tim Scott

3. Nikki Haley

2. Ron DeSantis

1. Donald Trump

All are batcrap crazy Trumpite kool-aid drinkers….if this is the final list of GOP candidates then very little will change.

Can you think of anyone else that would make this list?

And it is not looking good for the Dems either…..Biden is not doing well on approval…

The midterm elections could spell disaster for President Biden and the Democrats, if recent polling is any indication. A new Gallup poll shows an average of 47% of Americans surveyed in the fourth quarter of 2021 identified with or leaned toward the Republican Party compared to 42% for the Democratic Party—for a net swing of 14 points from the first quarter, when Democrats held a 49-40 advantage, CNN reports. As Gallup notes, a 5-point Republican advantage hasn’t been seen since 1995, after the party took control of the House for the first time since the 1950s.

Democrats could be in for what NBC News terms a “shellacking.” History shows that “in 1994, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018—when the president’s party suffered big losses—overwhelming majorities said the country was headed on the wrong track before the election; each president’s job rating was below 50%; and the president’s party trailed on the generic ballot,” the outlet reports. NBC’s October poll indicated 71% of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction and put Biden’s job rating at 42%. “The silver lining for Democrats is that they enjoyed a narrow lead on the generic ballot,” per the outlet, which notes its own latest poll is due out in a few days.

However, this speculation comes far too early for Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Poll, who argues the election will hinge on how the COVID-19 pandemic plays out over the coming months. “Remember that the pandemic affects almost everything—the economy, health care, education, employment, and family finances,” he tells the New Republic. Yet with others focused on the stalemate over voting rights legislation, Senate Democrats plan to push forward, even without the votes to change filibuster rules. As the Hill reports, there is talk of them forcing Republicans to stage a talking filibuster, with senators present on the floor, with an eventual simple-majority vote.

The polls are not looking good for Biden and his re-election….people think he should just move over for a better choice….

President Biden ends his first year in the White House with a clear majority of Americans for the first time disapproving of his handling of the presidency in the face of an unrelenting pandemic and roaring inflation, according to a new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. More Americans disapprove than approve of how Biden is handling his job as president, 56% to 43%. As of now, just 28% of Americans say they want Biden to run for reelection in 2024, including only 48% of Democrats, the AP reports. Asked on Wednesday at his news conference about his flagging popularity, Biden responded, “I don’t believe the polls.”

It’s a stark reversal from early in Biden’s presidency. In July, 59% of Americans said they approved of his job performance in an AP-NORC poll. His approval rating dipped to 50% by late September in the aftermath of the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan and during surging coronavirus infections. The latest poll shows that confidence in Biden’s handling of the pandemic has eroded as the omicron variant surges. Just 45% say they approve of Biden’s handling of COVID-19, down from 57% in December and from 66% in July 2021. Overall, the poll shows Biden in a better position than former President Donald Trump was at a similar point in his presidency; in February 2018, just 35% of Americans said they approved of Trump.

Americans are even more downbeat about Biden’s handling of the economy, with just 37% approving, often citing inflation. Gary Cameron, 66, of Midwest City, Oklahoma, said the president’s verbal gaffes and age—79—don’t give him confidence that Biden has the skill or energy to pull the country out of its malaise. Other respondents said Biden’s age and life experience have been an asset. Nicole Jensen-Oost, 79, of Plano, Texas, said Biden has demonstrated leadership and empathy through the pandemic. “This man has heart,” she said. “He’s compassionate, and the country needs that right now.” The poll was taken this week and reports a margin of error for all respondents of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Think about that for a moment…..Dems losing support and the GOP is gaining…a party that belongs to Trump and his minions…..does it concern you yet?

I will keep my readers updated as often as I can….and I will make my thoughts known on the Dem side of the equation.

All in all I weep for my country….all I have left is knowing that I am old and will not be around to see the final demise of a once great country.
