Onto 2024?

Closing Thought–06Jul20

I know we do not even have a good idea of what to expect for 2020…..but never mind the racist little shits are already looking to 2024 for a replacement of Trump at the head of a ticket of racist bullsh*t.

Who you may ask.

His name is Tucker Carlson….FOX propagandist.

The 2020 election is still months away, but it’s evidently not too early to start the speculation about 2024. And in this case, the speculation centers on Tucker Carlson of Fox News, who is the subject of multiple stories—most notably at Politico and Business Insider—that explain why he makes sense as the GOP candidate in the next election. Coverage:

  • The buzz: A story by Alex Thompson at Politico says party strategists are “buzzing” about the 51-year-old Carlson as a 2024 candidate, and a consensus is emerging that he would be an immediate frontrunner after the 2020 dust clears. “He’s a talented communicator with a massive platform. I think if he runs he’d be formidable,” says Luke Thompson, a strategist who worked for Jeb Bush’s 2016 super PAC. In all, 16 party bigwigs interviewed voice the same sentiment.
  • Ditto: Tom LoBianco at Business Insider reports that “a small group of New York donors also began talking at the start of June about running him for president in 2024.” He quotes conservative activist Jon Schweppe to explain the momentum: Carlson is “taking a moment when the GOP is lacking vision or any sort of moral clarity—and he’s providing it,” says Schweppe. “Naturally, his following is growing. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I hope the president is watching.”
  • The ideology: Think Trumpism, but without President Trump himself. Politico’s Thompson describes it as “a blend of anti-immigrant nationalism, economic populism and America First isolationism that he articulates unapologetically and with some snark.” And Carlson goes after the president publicly when he thinks Trump isn’t adhering to the vision.
  • The audience: Big, and growing. As Poynter notes, the latest TV ratings show that Carlson didn’t just lead all shows in the quarter, his Tucker Carlson Tonight “had the best viewership in the history of cable news.” Carlson drew a staggering 4.33 million viewers in the quarter, and that’s despite big-name advertiser boycotts over Carlson’s comments on the George Floyd protests. An example: “This may be a lot of things, this moment we are living through,” Carlson said. “But it is definitely not about black lives and remember that when they come for you, and at this rate, they will.” The Poynter piece also takes note of Carlson’s “flip-flopping” on the coronavirus response during this ratings period.
  • The clout: In a story about Trump at Vanity Fair, Gabriel Sherman reports that the president called Carlson late last week amid sinking polls and generally bad news and said: “What do I do? What do I do?” And the analyses above suggest that Carlson’s growing audience shows that more and more people are looking to him for a sense of where the party is headed. A piece at OutKick by Bobby Burack notes that Carlson’s audience is growing among all age groups.
  • Will he? Carlson “has not seriously broached” the idea of running, writes LoBianco, citing several sources. And Carlson has publicly dissed the idea of running for office previously. But some think he appears to be positioning himself for a run, as when he formally cut ties with the conservative Daily Caller, which he started. Yes, this talk of a 2024 candidacy may be “pure fantasy,” writes Seth Cohen at Forbes. “But if we have learned anything over the past several years, it is that, for better or for worse, sometimes television can become reality.” Carlson currently “has the ability to shift the perception of millions of Americans every day,” he notes. “The question is, in four years, would he want to move from being the shaper of that reality to the leader of it?”

Just what the country needs…..another liar and purveyor of BS labelled as news.

Something to think about as you prepare to vote in 2020.

Civil War Missed Opportunities

There is a lot of talk these days about the Confederacy…..especially the monuments to the “heroes” of the American Civil War….but this post in NOT about those stone monuments…..but rather the missed opportunities that could have lead to a quicker conclusion of the war.

WHAT IF THE South had marched on Washington D.C. in 1861 after the First Battle of Bull Run? Suppose General George McClellan had been bolder during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Picture General George Meade pursuing and destroying Robert E. Lee’s army once and for all after Gettysburg. Could any of these scenarios have led to an early conclusion to the U.S. Civil War?

Debates about how the bloody four-year conflict might have ended had one commander or another moved with greater haste, boldness, or discernment have raged for year

In fact, some of the war’s finest scholars, and more than a few ‘armchair historians’ as well, have explored all manner of ‘what if’ scenarios. And playing these sorts of guessing games carries risks – anyone bold enough to hypothesize is often greeted with scorn, derision and ridicule. After all, Civil War buffs are a passionate breed!

Nevertheless – and grasping full well the firestorm such speculation often ignites among aficionados of the period – I will offer up a few speculations of my own, stipulating as I do, that they are my own humble opinions, and nothing more.

Missed Opportunities – Four Battles That Might Have Ended the U.S. Civil War Long Before 1865

I still think that the South would have lost the war no matter what….they just did not have the industrial base for a prolonged conflict.

In full disclosure….my maternal grandmother’s name was Elizabeth Mae Davis…and according to the family tales and sagas she was related to Jefferson Davis.

I know there are many that like the study of the American Civil war….of which I am not one…..and if they have any thoughts on missed opportunities….please feel free to share….

Clinton’s Serbia/Kosovo

In the 1990s I was never a supporter of Clinton’s war in the Balkans….

The communist years

The former Yugoslavia was a Socialist state created after German occupation in World War II and a bitter civil war. A federation of six republics, it brought together Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims, Albanians, Slovenes and others under a comparatively relaxed communist regime. Tensions between these groups were successfully suppressed under the leadership of President Tito.

After Tito’s death in 1980, tensions re-emerged. Calls for more autonomy within Yugoslavia by nationalist groups led in 1991 to declarations of independence in Croatia and Slovenia. The Serb-dominated Yugoslav army lashed out, first in Slovenia and then in Croatia. Thousands were killed in the latter conflict which was paused in 1992 under a UN-monitored ceasefire.

It all began……

Milosevic in 1998 launched his fourth war in the former Yugoslavia, this time intending to address his “Albanian problem” by using his army to force out over 60 percent of the population of Kosovo. Given European and American inaction for years as people were killed in Bosnia earlier in the decade, Albanian Americans were fearful that history could be repeated in Kosovo. So, they organized themselves. They united different community factions, opened an office in Washington, D.C., and began engaging in one of the oldest of American traditions – petitioning their government to do something to stop the killing and rape in Kosovo.

Clinton put all the hopes of Kosovo in the hands of Hashim Thaci and now this person has been indicted for war crimes….

President Bill Clinton’s favorite freedom fighter just got indicted for mass murder, torture, kidnapping, and other crimes against humanity. In 1999, the Clinton administration launched a 78-day bombing campaign that killed up to 1500 civilians in Serbia and Kosovo in what the American media proudly portrayed as a crusade against ethnic bias. That war, like most of the pretenses of U.S. foreign policy, was always a sham.

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci was charged with ten counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity by an international tribunal in The Hague in the Netherlands. It charged Thaci and nine other men with “war crimes, including murder, enforced disappearance of persons, persecution, and torture.” Thaci and the other charged suspects were accused of being “criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders” and the indictment involved “hundreds of known victims of Kosovo Albanian, Serb, Roma, and other ethnicities and include political opponents.”

Kosovo Indictment Proves Bill Clinton’s Serbian War Atrocities

Another version to above article here…..https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/06/30/bill-clintons-serbian-war-atrocities-exposed-in-new-indictment/

This makes Clinton just as guilty in my book as Thaci…..I love the closing statement of the article…..

“Bill Clinton’s 1999 bombing of Serbia was as big a fraud as George W. Bush’s conning this nation into attacking Iraq. The fact that Clinton and other top U.S. government officials continued to glorify Hashim Thaci despite accusations of mass murder, torture, and body trafficking is another reminder of the venality of much of America’s political elite. Will Americans again be gullible the next time that Washington policymakers and their media allies concoct bullshit pretexts to blow the hell out of some hapless foreign land?”

That is a rhetorical question….for I already know the answer….and the media will make sure that it does occur again…..and again……

But Markets Are Booming!

We hear every day just how the markets are doing (that would be stock markets not the food markets…although they are doing well as well with the increase in prices….you know profits are far more important than the well being of the people)…..

But reality is a lot different than the Fantasy that if markets are up then the economy is in great shape……that is a stupid statement that keeps getting regurgitated day after day……

Ask the 47% workers that are unemployed.

According to newly released Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures, 47.2 percent of working-age Americans were without work in May, the highest level recorded since the end of World War II.

The numbers are based on the BLS employment-population ratio, which takes the total labor force and divides it by the number of those actually working. It is a more accurate measure of joblessness than the monthly unemployment report, which only counts those actively seeking work.

At the end of May the employment-population ratio stood at 52.8 percent; it stood at 61.2 percent at the start of the year. The employment-population ratio reached a postwar high of nearly 65 percent in 2000.

Poverty is expanding….regardless what some right wing dolts try to tell you…..I have written about this some 12 years ago…..https://lobotero.com/why-poverty/

Then there is the “inequality” thing……again many years ago a blog post…..https://lobotero.com/2010/03/09/the-creeping-cancer-known-as-inequality/

The virus has done little to change the slide of the workers into poverty….and it appears that the world economy will have a bad couple of years to come thanks to the pandemic…..

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has significantly increased its forecast for the contraction in global economy, warning that it will take a cumulative $12 trillion hit over 2020–2021. Updating its forecast yesterday, the IMF said the global contraction for 2020 would be -4.9 percent, some 1.9 percentage points below the forecast it issued in April.

It said the COVID-19 pandemic “has had a more negative impact on activity on the first half of 2020 than anticipated, and the recovery is expected to be more gradual than previously forecast.” Overall, this would leave 2021 gross domestic product (GDP) some 6.5 percentage points lower than the pre-pandemic projections of 2020.

We have an election approaching…you can help change the trajectory of the economy by voting……and it needs a change….

Trump’s nationalism is clear, but is U.S. capitalism turning nationalist too?

Broadly, U.S. employers neither think nor care much about racism. Some use it to divide employees, keep them from unifying around workplace issues, labor unions, unwanted political initiatives, etc. Most ignore it unless and until gross racism brings victims and anti-racists into the street in ways that threaten their commerce or the economic status quo. Then lip service against racism flows. Corporations make mostly cosmetic adjustments hyped by major public relations efforts. At best, a few genuine, usually marginal improvements are achieved in racial integration and the excruciatingly slow decline of institutional racism.

US global capitalist leadership of the last 50 years is now in decline
