New polling shows public trust is eroding regarding the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as news outlets attempt to catalogue President Donald Trump’s lies about the crisis.

Yahoo! News and YouGov surveyed 1,635 adults across the country this week, finding that 53% of Americans do not trust the president to tell the truth about the virus, officially known as COVID-19. 

Seventy-nine percent of Democrats surveyed said they agreed that Trump can’t be trusted, while just 16% of Republicans agreed. 

The poll revealed lopsided levels of trust along partisan lines, with 79% of Democrats saying they believe Trump is lying to the U.S. public about the crisis and just 16% of Republicans reporting the same.

President Trump said Monday that he wants to reopen the country for business in weeks, not months, and he claimed, without evidence, that continued closures could result in more deaths than the coronavirus pandemic. “We can’t have the cure be worse than the problem,” Trump told reporters at a press briefing, echoing a midnight Sunday tweet. “We have to open our country because that causes problems that, in my opinion, could be far bigger problems.” Trump acknowledged there were trade-offs, “there’s no question about that,” but claimed that, if closures stretch on for months, there would be “probably more death from that than anything that we’re talking about with respect to the virus.” The comments were further evidence that Trump has grown impatient with the pandemic, reports the AP, even before it has reached its expected peak.

“I’m not looking at months, I can tell you right now,” Trump said Monday, adding that America will soon be back open for business. He said, though, that states could continue to enforce stricter measures. In recent days, tensions have been rising between those who argue the country needs to get back up and running to prevent a deep economic depression, and medical experts who warn that, unless more extreme action is taken, the human cost will be catastrophic. “We can’t shut in the economy. The economic cost to individuals is just too great,” Larry Kudlow, Trump’s top economic adviser, said in an interview Monday on Fox News Channel. “The president is right. The cure can’t be worse than the disease, and we’re going to have to make some difficult trade-offs.”

President Trump has put a date on his desire to have the US running at normal speed: Easter, which is a little less three weeks away. Trump made the comments at the White House while participating in a virtual town hall for Fox News, reports CNBC. “We’re opening up this incredible country,” he said. “Because we have to do that. I would love to have it open by Easter.” Trump has said in recent days he’s worried that a prolonged shutdown would cause more damage to the US than the coronavirus itself. Critics fear that easing up on travel restrictions will worsen the pandemic in the US, but Trump argued the alternative is worse. “We’re going to lose more people by putting a country into a massive recession or depression,” he said. “The other people, you’re going to have suicide by the thousands, you’re going to have all sorts of things happen.”

Easter this year falls on April 12. “I would love to have that,” said Trump. “It’s such an important day for other reasons, but I’d love to make it an important day for this. I would love to have the country opened up, and rarin’ to go by Easter.” Earlier this month, Trump laid out a 15-day plan to slow the spread of the virus, and that period ends on March 30. “We’ll assess at that time,” said Trump, per the Washington Post. His comments come amid a continued rise in cases. Earlier Tuesday, the World Health Organization warned that the US is poised to become the new “epicenter” of the pandemic, reports Reuters. In the last 24 hours, 40% of the world’s new cases came from the US, says a WHO spokesperson. The current US total is just shy of 50,000, per the New York Times. The US death toll is 615.

• Echoing that: Former Goldman Sachs chief Lloyd Blankfein is in Trump’s camp here. “Extreme measures to flatten the virus ‘curve’ is sensible—for a time—to stretch out the strain on health infrastructure,” he tweets. “But crushing the economy, jobs and morale is also a health issue-and beyond. Within a very few weeks let those with a lower risk to the disease return to work.”
• Opposing view: No, no, no, argues Jordan Weissmann at Slate. “This is an extremely dangerous line of thinking, and not just because it will likely lead to more casualties,” he writes. “Encouraging Americans back to work before the virus is contained will not save the economy from catastrophe. Rather, it will set the country up to limp along, half-functioning as the pandemic spreads further.” It’s the worst of both worlds, he fears. Instead, he advocates a national lockdown for at least three weeks.
• Phased return: Any return to normalcy would likely be phased in once the 15-day period Trump initially laid out ends on March 30. For example, the elderly or those with underlying health issues could be asked to remain in isolation, while healthier people would be encouraged to return to work. The guidelines could vary geographically, per CNN. More specifically, the White House could lift federal guidelines but allow states to act on their own.
• Quarantine lite: At the Week, Joel Mathis thinks a “quasi-quarantine”—somewhere in the middle of the two opposing camps—is in our future. In reality, “shelter in place” orders can’t last too long, he writes. But “it is still possible to maintain some level of social distancing and other healthy practices under such circumstances,” he adds, citing a friend’s Shanghai photos of a rooftop dinner party in which everyone was wearing safety masks.
• Key advisers: “Remember that Trump has no public health professionals in his circle of informal advisers,” writes Jonathan Swan at Axios. “Those are not his go-to calls when he’s in the residence late at night. They’re all business or media folks.”
• 2 voices: Reaction to the idea isn’t breaking down the way you might expect. Trump supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham, for example, tweeted that Trump should listen to health experts, not economic ones. “There is no functioning economy unless we control the virus,” he warned. But New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a frequent Trump critic, sounded closer to Trump’s line of thinking. “You can’t stop the economy forever,” he said Monday. “So we have to start to think about does everyone stay out of work? Should young people go back to work sooner? Can we test for those who had the virus, resolved, and are now immune and can they start to go back to work?”
