Why Camp David?

Closing Thought–09Sep19

There was an attempt to hold secret talks between the US and the Taleban on the possibility of a peace agreement…..and dear Mr. Trump decided to cancel the meeting…

Many months of tough negotiations between US and Taliban officials came to a draft agreement which some analysts believe was going to be formally finalized as a peace deal this weekend. That will not happen.

President Trump took to Twitter on Saturday announcing that he has “called off peace negotiations” with the Taliban, citing anger over one of the Taliban’s car bombings in Kabul last week.

Trump also revealed that he had planned secret talks with both Afghan President Ghani and Taliban leaders at Camp David, but that in the course of his new decision, he had canceled those meetings as well.

It is unclear, then, whether Trump’s saying he “called off” the negotiations just refers to this weekend, or to the entire process. The US State Department was unclear, and referred questions to the White House.

Everybody scrambled to defend the president’s decision……of course they are spin it to the point that they, Taleban, has been killing Americans and to hold such a meeting with a group that [protected the group that attacked on 9/11.

Now there is the reason…….it was a political decision nothing else.

It would have been used against Trump in the upcoming 2020 election….so all the “reasons” were just fluff…the real reason was a electoral decision.

The spin is to cover the fact that the president is a moron for even considering such a meeting just days before any 9/11 remembrances…..these meetings would appear to be a spit in the faces of those that died on 9/11….just think of the ammo he would give to his opponent in 2020….

A Peace Race?

I am an unapologetic antiwar supporter.

I have been so for 40+ years…I have never supported a war after 1972……I believe there are other answers to the world’s problem beyond killing people to make a point.

Back in my days of protests there was a slogan that made the rounds….”War is good business….Invest your children”…..basically the war machine will use everything possible to keep the wars going…..but we should not believe the hype of the M-IC…..

Vice President Mike Pence was the commencement speaker at West Point. In part, he told the graduating cadets this: “It is a virtual certainty that you will fight on a battlefield for America at some point in your life. You will lead soldiers in combat. It will happen…And when that day comes, I know you will move to the sound of the guns and do your duty, and you will fight, and you will win. The American people expect nothing less.”

What Pence didn’t mention that day is why he could be so sure that this will come to pass. Or who the primary beneficiaries will be, if or when it does. Because the winners won’t be the American people, who see their taxes go to missiles instead of healthcare and education. Nor will they be the soldiers themselves—some of whom will return in flag-draped caskets while many more sustain life-altering physical and psychological injuries. The winners also won’t be the citizens of other countries who experience death and displacement on a horrific scale from our awesome military might. And our planet’s now-fragile climate won’t come out on top either, since the Pentagon is the single largest oil consumer in the world.

Give Peace a Chance: Don’t Believe the War Profiteers

To me it is way past time to stop and re-think all our endless wars of aggression…..

I read a piece in The American Conservative stating that war does not make sense anymore……

Trump and his group of mindless thugs have thumped their chests over Iran and few people actually want another war especially our combat vets…..

Majorities of veterans and the general public agree that the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan weren’t worth fighting, and hold similar views about the ongoing US military campaign in Syria.

The findings come from a new survey of American adults produced by the Pew Research Center. The Iraq war in particular was seen as futile, suggesting that public sentiment is in line with the conclusion of US military strategists who say the biggest beneficiary of the 2003 invasion was Iran.

We are fighting wars that make no sense….other than to keep defense contractors in business and profitable……we always hear about the arms race….how about a new approach…a Peace Race?

In late April, the highly-respected Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reported that, in 2018, world military expenditures rose to a record $1.82 trillion. The biggest military spender by far was the United States, which increased its military budget by nearly 5 percent to $649 billion (36 percent of the global total). But most other nations also joined the race for bigger and better ways to destroy one another through war.

This situation represents a double tragedy. First, in a world bristling with weapons of vast destructive power, it threatens the annihilation of the human race. Second, as vast resources are poured into war and preparations for it, a host of other problems―poverty, environmental catastrophe, access to education and healthcare, and more―fail to be adequately addressed.

How About a Peace Race Instead of an Arms Race?

Peace is far more desirable than the death and destruction of war…..then why not take a chance and…….Give Peace A Chance!

GOP Is Cowardly As Well

I have written many times just how cowardly I think the DNC/DCCC has become…it tries to pick the candidates for the voter with the help of the MSM…..and now the GOP has joined into the undemocratic practice.

They are choosing the candidates for the voter……trying to head off any embarrassment for “you know who”……

Four states are poised to cancel their 2020 GOP presidential primaries and caucuses, a move that would cut off oxygen to Donald Trump’s long-shot primary challengers.

Republican parties in South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas are expected to finalize the cancellations in meetings this weekend, according to three GOP officials who are familiar with the plans.

The moves are the latest illustration of Trump’s takeover of the entire Republican Party apparatus. They underscore the extent to which his allies are determined to snuff out any potential nuisance en route to his renomination — or even to deny Republican critics a platform to embarrass him.

This means the newest challenger to Trump will face a steeper hill to navigate……

President Trump just picked up another opponent in the Republican primaries: Mark Sanford, the former South Carolina governor and congressman, has decided to launch a longshot challenge to the current occupant of the Oval Office, reports the AP. “I am here to tell you now that I am going to get in,” Sanford said in an interview on Fox News Sunday. When asked why he was taking on an incumbent who’s popular within the party, Sanford said: “I think we need to have a conversation on what it means to be a Republican. I think that as the Republican Party, we have lost our way.”

The 59-year-old Sanford has long been an outspoken critic of Trump’s. He frequently questioned Trump’s motivations and qualifications during the run-up to the 2016 presidential election and called Trump’s candidacy “a particularly tough pill to swallow.”

That makes 3 challengers to Trump’s candidacy……

Tell me what you think….should the party decide who should represent the people and take it out of the hands of the voter?  Or should the voter be lead around by the nose?

Back To Afghanistan

First, more sad news another American soldier was killed in Afghanistan……

A Green Beret sergeant from Idaho was killed in action Thursday in Afghanistan, becoming the 15th U.S. combat casualty there this year as the Pentagon prepares to draw down its forces in the country.

Although the Pentagon has not yet officially released the soldier’s name, he was identified Friday as Sgt. 1st Class Dustin Ard on the Facebook page of Idaho State Rep. Rod Furniss

Ard is survived by his pregnant wife and 3-year-old daughter, according to Idaho media.

Ard was killed at the outset of a raid alongside Afghan commandos in Afghanistan’s southern Zabul province, the New York Times reported Friday. A Pentagon spokesman could not confirm those details but said an investigation has been initiated.

I have been writing about the possibility of some sort of peace for Afghanistan…my most recent post from just days ago……https://lobotero.com/2019/09/03/afghanistan-deal-or-no-deal/

Word has leaked out the president has brought together the parties in a secret meeting and hawks are scrmabling to beat down this attempt…..

Nine former U.S. envoys to Afghanistan put their names on an article posted on the Atlantic Council’s blog on Tuesday. The article, titled “U.S.-Taliban Negotiations: How to Avoid Rushing to Failure,” makes the argument that if a major withdrawal of U.S. troops occurred in Afghanistan, the country would fall into a “total civil war.”

The article was posted just a day after U.S. negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad announced an agreement was made between the U.S. and Taliban for a withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops over the next five months. The deal is still pending approval from President Trump.

While the point these diplomats make about Afghanistan falling further into civil war after a U.S. withdrawal may be true, this article is full of the usual taking points that has kept the U.S. in this seemingly endless war. Afghanistan has been ravaged by civil war for decades, and while 14,000 U.S. troops maintain a presence in the country today, almost daily violence still occurs.

Former US Envoys to Afghanistan Want To Kill Peace Deal

Will these attempts be successful?

Well one could see it that way…..

Lobbyists and war hawks have a great sway over our foreign policy….the only way to go now is more war, more destruction and more deaths.

I think we need a “peace race” (post to come)…….this country has had enough war and killing….time to “give peace a chance”.
