Summer 1919

Closing Thought–24July19

Happy Birthday Mom….she would have been 98….I miss you.

A hundred years ago history was made…..it was made but seldom taught nor spoken of in most circles…..it is known as the “Red Summer”…..

America in the summer of 1919 ran red with blood from racial violence, and yet today, 100 years later, not many people know it even happened.

It flowed in small towns like Elaine, Arkansas, in medium-size places such as Annapolis, Maryland, and Syracuse, New York, and in big cities like Washington and Chicago. Hundreds of African American men, women and children were burned alive, shot, lynched or beaten to death by white mobs. Thousands saw their homes and businesses burned to the ground and were driven out, many never to return.

It was branded “Red Summer” because of the bloodshed and amounted to some of the worst white-on-black violence in U.S. history.

Hundreds of African American men, women and children were burned alive, shot, hanged or beaten to death by white mobs. Thousands saw their homes and businesses burned to the ground and were driven out, many never to return. It was branded “Red Summer” because of the bloodshed and amounted to some of the worst white-on-black violence in US history. Beyond the lives and family fortunes lost, it had far-reaching repercussions, contributing to generations of black distrust of white authority. But it also galvanized blacks to defend themselves and their neighborhoods with fists and guns; reinvigorated civil rights organizations like the NAACP and led to a new era of activism; gave rise to courageous reporting by black journalists; and influenced the generation of leaders who would take up the fight for racial equality decades later.

“The people who were the icons of the civil rights movement were raised by the people who survived Red Summer,” said Saje Mathieu, a history professor at the University of Minnesota. For all that, there are no national observances marking Red Summer. History textbooks ignore it, and most museums don’t acknowledge it. The reason: Red Summer contradicts the post-World War I-era notion that America was making the world safe for democracy, historians say. But that could change, the AP reports. A monument has been proposed in Arkansas. Several authors have written about the bloody summer. A Brooklyn choral group performed Red Summer-theme songs like “And They Lynched Him on a Tree” in March to commemorate the centennial. At the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Mathieu and an author plan to present some of their findings July 30. (The AP’s full story is worth a read)

Ask ten people what the Red Summer was about and you will get answers but none would be accurate.

Buy Your Career

It is not something new that the wealthy buy their positions in any presidential administration….it is just a way of life in the DC or our political system.

So when I read the William Barr had gave a bunch of dollars to the GOP Senate…..I was not surprised….may be you will be……

Attorney General William Barr donated $51,000 to the committee tasked with electing Republican senators just as the Republican-led Senate began considering his nomination in late 2018.

Quartz released the details of the conveniently timed donations in a report on Thursday.

Barr occasionally made political donations to the Republican Party between 1993 and 2018.

“In the lead up to his Senate confirmation hearings for attorney general earlier this year, his giving habits suddenly changed,” Quartz reported. “Barr’s donations became far more frequent, notable for their size, recipients, and possible utility to him.”

He gave thousands to the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) between November 7, 2018, and February 14 of this year, when he was confirmed. Barr’s nomination was publicly announced by Trump on December 7.

Again the old saying holds true….”American politics is the best government money can buy”……

And tomorrow is the big day….a former DoJ employee testifies before Congress…..and the games will begin in earnest.

A Party Of Fear, Party Of Lies

If you not sure what I mean by the title then I need to help you out….I am talking about the GOP, the modern day Republican Party, the party of old white guys, the party of no big policies just fear and lies.

I have little use these days for the Democratic Party but for the GOP I truly despise them (I do not use the term “despise” lightly)….all they are capable of doing these days is the spread of lies and most importantly FEAR.

History has shown that the two parties had the same issues but with different approaches….those days have died slowly and under Trump have bee replaced with NOTHING but slogans, insults and lies.

The politics of fear led by President Trump attacking undocumented immigrants and religious minorities is pushing our political parties apart. Political divisions in the United States are increased when our two major political parties do not agree on what are the important issues.

Historically, Democratic and Republican parties essentially agreed on the important issues, but differed in the approach to dealing with them. There was still agreement about the top issues after President Obama was elected. In 2009, the electorate of both parties ranked terrorism, economy, and jobs among their top 5 priorities. Indeed, even 5 years ago, in 2014, the economy, jobs and social security were among the top 5 concerns of both parties.

The major separation occurred after President Trump’s election in 2016. Opinion poll data show that in 2019 Republicans prioritized fear issues—terrorism, immigration, and military—while Democrats focused more on institutional support issues such as health care, education, and the environment. These are significant differences, the one signaling concern with protection, safety and security, while the other is more future-oriented and enabling. Party members agree that things have changed recently. In 1987, only 25% of those surveyed said there was a great deal of difference between Republicans and Democrats. But by 2019, 54% gave this view.

The Fear Party

The GOP has become a spineless worthless lump of manure….a rotting corpse of its once noble self….

Fear, fear, fear. Fury at dissent. Democrats are traitors.

Are you as tired of these old firebombs as I am? Tired of voting Republican in order to save the country from some dreadful looming monstrous fate? Fatigued by insinuations that we’re so weak that the Islamic State group or Iran or North Korea or commies right next door are about to do us in?

Let’s get a grip.

This type of speech is un-American. It’s undemocratic. Take Krauthammer’s screed. How can you compromise with a “totalitarian left”? You can’t.

More on the subject….

Plus one more opinion of the death of the GOP……

Darwin Is Coming for the GOP

It cannot come soon enough for me…..hopefully it will be replaced by a party that has issues and solutions…..a far cry from the GOP of today.

I shall hold a wake for their departure……just make it soon I am getting NO younger.

But here is an idea…..now that you are a dying party why not embrace the platform and issues from 1956?

Image result for 1956 GOP platform

Why not return to being a party of ideas and solutions?

Why not get on the right side of history for a change….whatcha got to lose?

News On Afghanistan

Afghanistan this country’s longest war EVER!

For 18 years this war has given us a wealth of news….most of which was contradicted the next day sometimes within hours of the issue…..so to say that this is updated news would be disingenuous….

DOD Report on Afghanistan – June 2019

First news that will not make many of your news hours….our troops are being exposed to deadly toxins as reported in my post……https://lobotero.com/2019/07/22/thoughts-on-veterans/

Second is the rise of hunger within the country…..

It’s become a tragically familiar scene in this part of south Asia. Drought, war and flood have combined to create a tragedy in Afghanistan that is – in some places – as severe as anything since the US-led coalition invaded the country in 2001.

Child malnutrition is one symptom of this triple-headed crisis.

“This is the highest rate of patients in 18 years,” said Dr Mirwais Aabidi, who runs the Mofleh Pediatric Hospital on the fringe of Herat, a major city in western Afghanistan.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/middle-east/after-18-years-of-liberating-war-afghanistan-s-children-are-starving-to-death-20190620-p51zjr.html

Then there is the chest thumping by our beloved supreme leader…..he gave his thoughts of winning the war in Afghanistan…..

The commander-in-chief made a bold pronouncement Monday: “If I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be gone. It would be over in, literally in 10 days … I don’t want to go that route.” The comments came during an Oval Office meeting with Pakistani Prime Minster Imran Khan; USA Today reports the two leaders’ countries have been working toward the route Trump does want to take: lowering the current US troop level in Afghanistan. Right now, it’s at about 14,000, and Trump expressed that he believes Pakistan can use the relationship it has with the Taliban to “help us out to extricate ourselves” from the country, reports the AP.

Politico reports Trump referred to “plans” that would allow him to win the war but explained “I just don’t want to kill 10 million people.” He criticized “our leadership” for getting in a 19-year-long situation that currently has our troops focused on “building gas stations” and “rebuilding schools. … The United States, we shouldn’t be doing that. That’s for them to do.” The AP describes the relationship between the US and Pakistan as a “yo-yo” that hit a low point when former President Obama ordered a raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound without first communicating with Pakistan. But it sees Pakistan as wanting “to reset relations with the US in hopes of securing more investment, trade, and possibly a restoration of American aid that Trump cut” in the face of the country’s economic hardship.

Afghanistan needs to end…….just pick a day and call the war a success and bring the troops home.
