Most rational people realize that there is something going on with the climate and weather……but for some reason the “centrists” Dems do not seem to want to make it an issue in the 2020….why is that?
There will be as many as 12 Democratic presidential debates over the next year. But none of them will be devoted to climate change — for now, anyway.
Presidential candidate Jay Inslee — who is running as a climate change candidate with a deeply developed plan to transform the nation’s energy system and rapidly slash carbon emissions — had urged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to host a debate dedicated exclusively to climate change. But Wednesday evening Inslee announced that his campaign received a call from the DNC “letting us know that they will not host a climate debate.”
What’s more, Inslee said the DNC told him that if he participated in another climate debate, outside of the DNC, the candidate and current governor of Washington would not be invited to any of the highly anticipated and televised DNC debates.

The Sunrise Movement is planning a massive program of protest to bring the issue to the forefront of the 2020 debate….
With the DNC set to vote next month on whether to host a 2020 presidential debate focused specifically on the climate crisis, the youth-led Sunrise Movement is planning a mass mobilization aimed at ensuring the Democratic leadership approves the grassroots demand that is backed by nearly every Democratic presidential contender and 64 percent of the party’s voters.
During the DNC’s national meeting on August 22-24, committee members from each state are expected to vote on a resolution calling for an official climate-focused debate, which activists argued is more necessary than ever after the first two Democratic debates in Miami, Florida devoted a combined 15 minutes to the planetary emergency.
Ahead of the vote, Sunrise said it plans to hold demonstrations at the local offices of DNC members nationwide to make clear that “the people demand a climate debate.”
Hopefully their efforts will bear fruit….the issue of climate change has been ignored long enough……

In response to news on Tuesday that a European Union satellite agency declared last month the hottest June ever recorded, 2020 Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders said, “Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to start treating this like a crisis and not a hoax.”
With campaigners across the world demanding leaders respond to the crisis of the rapidly heating planet as the “climate emergency” it is, Sanders was responding to a tweet by 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben noting new data released by the UN-supported Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) that showed global temperatures last month were the highest ever recorded for June since records began in the late 19th century.
Time to remove our collective heads from the sand…..time to make climate change a priority. PERIOD!
With so much funding from big business and global companies, there will always be a conflict between what they could do, and what they are prepared to do.

I am not a climate change denier. There is a human footprint affecting climate and there is a greenhouse effect. But I would like to remind Bernie re his and his party’s hypocrisy about crises and hoaxes. For more than two years they have accused Trump of being Putin’s lackey and made that hoax seem like a crisis. They even tried to frame the president with rogue government agents assisting and created a false crisis, a complete hoax. Trump has been screaming about the crisis on the border for two years and they called that a hoax. Oh, no invasion – it is a mere hoax. Now that the crisis cannot be denied they criticize Trump for not attending to this crisis which they have been calling a hoax. Trump, INS, HS, Border Patrol, and local law enforcement have been screaming for two years that they are underfunded, overwhelmed and do not have enough facilities , supplies and personnel for two years and they demonize Trump
and the agencies for alleged deplorable conditions. They called it a hoax for two years and would not cooperate with Trump and republicans for funding in order to capitalize on the crisis for political ammo. They call Trump a huckster and grifter. I think Bernie and Chuck and Nancy are the hucksters and grifters. But mere funding is just a band aid for this open border catastrophe.
The same thing happened as the Great Depression set in. Hoover did have proposals for modest government intervention to provide relief and recovery but the democrats opposed all his legislative attempts so that the real crisis would intensify and they would win the election of 1932. They put party above country just like they are doing now. Now I do think Hoover was too conservative and anti big government to be the right man for the time and FDR was the right man at the right time and I really am an FDR fan as I have an entire room in my house filled with FDR memorabilia. On the other hand , republicans and Trump that think climate change is a hoax are in the same class of jackasses as the democrats. The difference is that republicans are stupid and democrats are liars.
Both parties are damn liars…..Repubs need to grow a pair to be stupid…they just cannot muster a pair these days…..chuq
A lot of the candidates named climate change as the number one issue. They think it is important. They could talk about it themselves as part of their responses to questions. Since they don’t answer the questions they are asked they could work in climate change while they are avoiding the issues they were asked about.

Pete is correct. Centrist Dems are extremely wary of angering their corporate donors if they pursue aggressive climate mitigation policies or even speak about doing so in public. This is especially a concern for them heading into a presidential election campaign. Furthermore, this influence of big money on the party manifests itself on other issues as well such as universal healthcare which has broad popular support across the political spectrum. In fact, the impetus of the healthcare issue – along with the backlash against President Trump – were the driving forces behind Democrats’ big gains in the 2018 midterms. Yet, centrist Dems like Biden and Hickenlooper continue to rail against “socialism” like it was an infectious disease that needs to be eradicated.
The truth of the matter is that some socialist policies are very popular and very effective (e.g. Social Security, and Medicare) while others are more questionable (e.g. corporate tax breaks and subsides). Whenever we see so-called “centrists” taking an ideological position against socialist policies that not only work but also are helpful for candidates to run on, then their motives become suspect.
