Closing Thought–16Jan19

I could do some retro review of a Clint Eastwood movie from the 70s but personally they were all pretty sucky movies…..the old “Spaghetti Westerns” with the weird sounding guns and the bad music.

Awhile back one of my closing thoughts was about the Congress finally making lynching a hate crime…….after 200attempts and finally a success……my post on the situation……https://lobotero.com/2018/12/20/closing-thought-20dec18/

I bring this up because there are some that want to alter the law on lynchings…..and as one might expect it is some religious sorts that want the change….

The U.S. Senate last month unanimously passed a bill that would explicitly make lynching a federal crime. Not everyone, however, is pleased with passage of the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act.

Liberty Counsel, an evangelical nonprofit that opposes gay rights, and its chairman, Mat Staver, are taking issue with the bill’s inclusion of LGBTQ people.

“The old saying is once that camel gets the nose in the tent, you can’t stop them from coming the rest of the way in,” Staver said in an interview with conservative Christian news outlet OneNewsNow. “This is a way to slip it in under a so-called anti-lynching bill, and to then to sort of circle the wagon and then go for the juggler [sic] at some time in the future.”

Staver told OneNewsNow that his organization, which has been labeled an anti-LGBTQ “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is lobbying lawmakers in the House to have them remove the bill’s “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” language before taking a vote.

Not a fine example of Christian love, huh?

This is why I dislike most Christians……they are the most hypocritical of people…..plus they are usually conservative and that is just boring.

Museum Of The Bible

The bigots in the family that owns Hobby Lobby has run into trouble with their expansive project…….the Museum of the Bible.  (Basically this is just a money maker for the family fleecing the gullible)

These “people” are searching the world looking for antiques that prove the Bible is accurate down to the last comma…..but they have run into a bit of trouble……their display on the Fertile Crescent was comprised of many STOLEN artifacts from the war in Iraq and the National Museum of Iraq…..

I have a big problem with stealing a people’s history and culture no matter who the Hell you think you are….I have written about the stolen artifacts on display…..https://lobotero.com/2015/10/28/speaking-of-good-christians/

There was more I had to say……https://lobotero.com/2018/05/03/the-theft-of-history/

This incident put a big hole in their displays on the land of the Bible…..but a recent find will put another hole in their displays….

I seem that they, the Museum, got their hands on some fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls to add to their displays of the Holy Land…..first they bought and displayed stolen artifacts from Iraq and now it appears that they bought and displayed FAKE Dead Sea Scrolls…..

Less than a year after it opened, Washington’s Museum of the Bible is admitting that at least some items in its centerpiece collection of Dead Sea Scrolls are fakes. The embarrassing announcement Monday is the culmination of a technical analysis by a team of German scholars. They concluded that at least five of the museum’s 16 fragments are apparent forgeries, per the AP.

The authenticity of the collection was being questioned even as the $500 million museum held its grand opening ceremonies in November 2017. The scrolls are a collection of ancient Jewish religious texts first discovered in the mid-1940s in what is now Israel. Most are tightly controlled by the Israeli Antiquities Authority. But around 2002, a wave of new fragments began mysteriously appearing on the market, despite warnings from Biblical scholars

The harder they try to prove their premise the easier it is for them to be hoodwinked…..and the profiteers are making millions off these closed minded fools.

But the slap on the wrist that this group gets is nothing to the damage they did to a nation’s history and culture….there needs to be a harsher sentence than  a minor fine and promise to be good.

FDR was neither radical nor conservative, no matter what his defenders and critics claimed, both then and now. One part “traitor to his class” and another part defender of capitalism, he was both dangerously power hungry and the savior of American-style liberal democracy. This man was—like his party’s co-founder, Thomas Jefferson—an enigma, an unknowable sphinx. And yet he was the man for his moment. Indeed, FDR and his “New Deal,” as both a response to economic depression and reorganization of society, represent one of the most profound transitions in U.S. history. FDR served as president (1933-45) longer than anyone before or since, elected four times by wide margins. His opponents feared the man, and his supporters canonized him with rare and remarkable passion.

Class Dismissed!

I Said What?

Rep. Steve King of Iowa has a loong and disgusting history of making insulting and racist comments and statements.

Congressional Republican leaders agreed to strip Rep. Steve King of his positions on House committees Monday after he lamented in an interview with The New York Times that the term “white supremacist” had become offensive.

The Iowa Republican tried to clarify that he rejects white supremacy, but with his long history of creating uproar across the nation with his racially-charged comments, those objections largely fell on deaf ears.

While defending his remarks in the past, the Iowa Republican has claimed he is regularly misquoted and that he doesn’t trust most media outlets.

Before his recent re-election, King was under fire for reports that he met with members of the Freedom Party, a political organization founded by a former Nazi SS officer, during a trip to Europe funded in part by a Holocaust memorial nonprofit.

Some of the remarks he has made in the past……

Finally the GOP has grown a spine and stepped up and acting against King for his blatant racism…….

“This is not the first time we’ve heard these comments,” McCarthy said of King’s remarks. “That is not the party of Lincoln and it’s definitely not American.” McCarthy met with King for an hour before House GOP leaders decided to kick him off the committees. “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization—how did that language become offensive?” King wondered in a New York Times interview last week, in which he described the Democratic Party as “no country for white men.” After losing his committee seats, King claimed his remarks had been misunderstood and said McCarthy had made a “political decision that ignores the truth.” (King was defended by David Duke after a controversial tweet in 2017.)

After years of out right bigotry what made the House decide to do the right thing and punish this toad?  Was this just the GOP trying to find a way to change the conversation?

I am pleased they did act but it is not enough….there should be NO place for a bigot in the US House of Representatives.  Period!

Was Osama Right?

****Please this is only a post of an opinion of several people….it is posted here as an engine for thought and conversation….I by NO means am implying anything other than a source for discussion****

Back in the 70s when there were numerous terrorist attacks there was an argument the “one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter”….this is a paper from a grad student…..

The ‘One man’s terrorist…’-cliché challenges the notion that ‘terrorism’ and ‘freedom fighting’ are mutually exclusive concepts where the former is always illegitimate. “The question of who is a terrorist,” writes Ganor (2002:287), “depends entirely on the subjective outlook of the definer.” By definition, the slogan will almost hold true by definition, if taken to its logical extremes. After all, it only takes ‘one man’ to consider the act freedom fighting for it to become such – and this ‘man’ can very well be the terrorist him or herself. The power of the slogan thus derives from its implicit invitation to assess a terrorist act from the perspective of the terrorist; emphasising the importance of critically reflecting on what factors influenced the choice of resorting to terrorism. But this subordinates a means or tactic – terrorism – to an end or strategic goal – fighting for freedom. As such, the slogan implicitly holds (paradoxically) that ‘terrorism’ is inherently bad while ‘freedom fighting’ is good, and that labelling an act freedom fighting precludes it from also being viewed as terrorism.

Interesting right?

Discuss.

Now Osama…we all know him as the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and was later killed by SEALs for his “crimes”.

Now think about something…..what if Osama had legit gripes?

You’re not supposed to utter these words, but what the heck: Osama bin Laden had a point. No, his grievances, as well as those of his followers and sympathizers, didn’t excuse the mass murder of 9/11—not by a long shot. After all, I am a native New Yorker whose family and neighborhood were directly touched by the horror of those inexcusable attacks. Still, more than 17 years after the attacks on the Pentagon and twin towers, it’s worth reflecting on bin Laden’s motives and discussing the stark fact that the United States government has made no moves to address his gripes.

Now is as good a time as any. The U.S. military remains mired in wars across the Greater Middle East that have now entered their 18th year. The cost: $5.9 trillion, 7,000 dead American soldiers, at least 480,000 locals killed and 21 million refugees created. The outcome: more instability, more violence, more global terror attacks and a U.S. reputation ruined for at least a generation in the Islamic world.

An interesting thought, right?
