“May The Fourth Be With You”
In Starship Troopers there was the “Mobile Infantry”….in Star Wars there were the “Imperial Troopers” and in various other SciFi movies there is the “Space Marines” or “Colonial Marines”…..why do I start with these movie moments?
Trump has taunted on a couple of occasions about a “space force”……
SpaceX founder Elon Musk cut through the excitement surrounding future travel to Mars Monday, noting “it’s difficult, dangerous,” and there’s a “good chance you will die.” A day later, President Trump appeared more optimistic, claiming Americans will reach Mars “very soon” and touting plans for a potential “space force” like in Star Wars, Politico reports. “My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a warfighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea,” Trump told an audience at a Marine Corps air station in San Diego on Tuesday. “I was saying it the other day … ‘Maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the Space Force.’ And I was not really serious,” he continued, per Business Insider. “Then I said, ‘What a great idea, maybe we’ll have to do that.'”
Trump may think he has a “great idea” the problem with that is it is not his…..
The idea isn’t Trump’s. A “Space Corps” was first proposed last July by Congress’ Strategic Forces Subcommittee. But it was left out of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act passed in November, with White House officials and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis speaking against it. Trump also seemed to take credit for advancements that could allow for flights to Mars as early as 2019. “You wouldn’t have been going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you,” Trump said, referring to his 2016 election rival Hillary Clinton. Trump later tweeted it was a “great honor” to address military members. In what CNN’s Jim Acosta refers to as “baffling,” Marine Corps was spelled “Marine Core” in a version of the tweet, since deleted.
Let’s say were have a space troopers what would the leadership be? A Space Command? Well….yeah.
A decision to form a Space Corps as a separate military department is on hold pending an independent study that is now under way. Meanwhile, another legislative push is ramping up to give space forces more autonomy than they currently have under the U.S. Air Force.
The House Armed Services Committee Strategic Forces subcommittee in its markup of the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act directs the establishment of a “subordinate unified command for space” under U.S. Strategic Command. This command would be “responsible for joint space warfighting operations.”
On another space related note….and speaking of a “Fence”…….
With space debris, thousands of small satellites scheduled for launch in the coming years, and more spacefaring countries than ever, the U.S. government is sorting out how to manage traffic and avoid accidents in a domain it relies on for commerce and security.
Space traffic management has been a major topic this week at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the world’s largest space conference. It kicked off with a speech by Vice President Mike Pence, who announced that daily management of space traffic would reside within the Commerce Department rather than the Federal Aviation Administration.
This is my tribute to “Star Wars Day” and “National Military Appreciation Month”……
