Games People Play…..

Recently I was surprised to see that one of my followers, w1nt3l, knew of Henry George and the land value tax……it is an economic theory that I think would solve a lot of problems…..but few know of his theory these days of runaway greed….

When you were a kid or maybe just yesterday…did you ever play Monopoly?  Did you get a monopoly game for Christmas?

Did you know that Henry George was the inspiration for the original Monopoly……..BAM!  Drop the history bomb!

This is a little something to explain the game and its origins…..

A brief history of America’s favorite board game……(you just knew there would be a historic perspective in there somewhere, right?)

Source: Monopoly’s Radical, Anticapitalist, Feminist Origins – by Andy Warner

Back in the 80’s I studied at the Henry George Institute…..and to this day I firmly believe that his land value tax would be an excellent policy for this country to follow.

The Birth Of The “Ministry Of Truth”

Does anyone recall the “Ministry of Enlightenment and Propaganda”?

Do not hurt yourself diving for Google…..it is the title that Hitler bestowed on Joseph Geobbels…..there was a governmental agency that had a lock on the “Truth”….why do I bring this up?

I am so glad that you asked that one important question.

While you were out wasting your hard earned cash on gifts for people that probably could care less our present president, the one we have now…not the one waiting in the wings for the helm of the government……signed a bill into law…..

President Obama quietly signed the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act into law, which authorizes a military spending budget of $611 billion, and includes the dangerous Counter Disinformation and Anti-Propaganda Act.

This bill, as we reportedly previously, will “Criminalize ‘Fake News, Propaganda’ on the Web,” a key piece of legislation meant to crack down on free speech and independent media. In Layman’s terms, the act will allow the government to crack down with impunity against any media outlet it deems “propaganda.” The next piece of the legislation will provide substantial amounts of money to fund “counter propaganda,” to make sure the government’s approved stories drown out alternative media and journalists who question the status quo.

The “right to free speech and freedom of the press,” is guaranteed by the First Amendment to The U.S. Constitution. It is a foundation of American values, put in place by our Founding Fathers to protect our liberties, is now being endangered by this new law.

(A post on Free Speech would be a good way to start 2017)

This is not the first time that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was used to disguise a piece of legislation. Back in 2012, Obama signed a law that allowed for the “indefinite detention of American citizens” without a judge or jury. Then in 2013, Obama signed an NDAA bill that packaged an end to the Smith-Mundit act that prevented the government from using propaganda against its own citizens enabling the government again to legally produce propaganda.

What does that mean for you if you are an independent journalist or blogger? You can read more here, but it means that for simply writing this and asking questions and pointing out that Obama always signs these bills around the holidays like I did in this poem, if I am accused of “fake news” or propaganda, I could face criminal charges.

In other words the stage is now set for the U.S. government to legally crack down on every media outlet that the they deem to be “foreign propaganda.” The ministry of truth is setup. Welcome to 1984.

Plus we have a leader that has much animosity toward the media….how will that play out after 20Jan?

Voting Against One’s Own Best Interests

There has been a disturbing trend in America….that is voters actually voting against themselves….how very American of them.

Take my state…in 2010 we had a Dem rep in DC…he was pro-life, pro-gun, pro-military, pro seniors…..he voted the way that the conservative majority in my area wanted him to vote…but for all his good deeds for the people of Mississippi he was voted out in favor of a Tea Party douche, Palazzo…..Taylor’s only crime was he was a Dem, a Blue Dog Dem…..in essence the people voted against their own best interests because of rhetoric….the perfect example of what our politics has become….petty and pathetic.

After Taylor’s loss I tried to interview locals to see why he would lose the election to a no nothing loser…..there were lots of reason but most of them made little sense but the one thing that most agreed on was the GOP tied him to Pelosi…..the man was more conservative than some Repubs…so their reasons made little sense to me….

I have tried to understand how people could do this sort of thing to themselves and a good reason escapes me at every turn.

But now the Atlantic has published an attempt to explain the phenom…..

Governing is often a cause-and-effect business. Give workers a tax break on retirement accounts? More people save for life after the working world. Offer a rebate for old cars? Drivers scrap their gas-guzzling Explorers in favor of sensible Corollas, and average fuel efficiency goes up.

It’s easy to sell something to voters when the costs and benefits are immediately obvious. But that’s not how most policies work. Many look downright terrible in the beginning—what, pay more taxes?—and deliver a payout only if people collectively change their future behavior. Take a carbon tax: Industry would pay more to produce energy, making stuff more expensive, but the price pressure might prompt an eventual shift to alternative fuels, which could deliver an overall benefit to society.

This phenom does not appear to be going anywhere….the American people will continue to vote against their own best interests….

Russia, To Boldly Go…….

Looks like this situation is the one that will dominate the last days of a helluva year, 2016…..Did or did not Russia do some unauthorized hacking?

As usual there are two sides to every story…..those that are outraged and those that are trying desperately to ignore the reports with the hopes something else will materialize to capture the attention of the public…..

This whole Russia hacking thing is unusual and I just had to offer my historical perspective on the situation…..

Source: Ain’t Karma A Bitch? – In Saner Thought

It fascinates me to see how many Americans are lining up on the side of the defense of Russia….a decade ago I would have called these people idiots and morons…..

I think many Americans are too distracted with the election to care or read about something other than the “great” job Trump will do for this country (another bit of fantasy….IMO)…..

I read a piece in VOX that actually tries to explain the situation with the Russia hack…

National security has been the focus of virtually all of my professional life. I was in Washington on 9/11 and saw the smoke rising from the Pentagon. I arrived in Iraq shortly after the 2003 US invasion and spent several years living in Baghdad and writing about what had quickly become a bloody civil war. I covered the Bush administration’s decision to surge troops into Iraq in 2007 and the Obama administration’s decision to surge troops into Afghanistan in 2009. I’ve written about US spying efforts abroad and foreign spying efforts inside the US.

But I’ve never covered anything quite like Russia’s hack of the Democratic National Committee’s servers and the email account of Clinton campaign chair John Podesta, moves designed to steal and then release information damaging to the Democratic presidential nominee.

True, we will have to wait an see just what tack our new president will take on this situation….I believe we are in for a long 4 years….and this could well be the opening salvo of a new Cold War.

There should be more attention to what Russia is doing with the Military…….

We began the forecasting process with Russia by looking at the country’s military capability. Russia has intervened in Syria to great fanfare, and while it has demonstrated undeniable improvements in some of its capabilities, the Russian military is far weaker than most make it out to be. Our 2016 forecast predicted a frozen conflict in Ukraine, and we came to the conclusion that this frozen conflict will be formalized in 2017 by answering a very basic question: What is the Russian military capability in Ukraine and in general?

The answer is found not by looking at events pertaining to the Ukrainian revolution in 2014, but rather the performance of the Russian military in the 2008 Georgia War. Russia achieved all of its strategic objectives in that five-day war, but serious deficiencies in Russian capabilities were revealed. Operational and tactical logistics left much to be desired, as the Russians had serious difficulties maintaining supply lines for food, fuel, and ammunition. Much of Russia’s military equipment was old and falling apart, Russian suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) and electronic warfare capabilities were deficient, and use of precision-guided munitions was rare. Joint operational planning between different services was either nonexistent or ineffective.

After the war, Russia set out on an ambitious and vast military modernization program, reforming everything from doctrine to training to weapons. Russia set clear goals for reducing the number of conscript soldiers to professionalize the force. The 10-year State Armaments Program, announced by President Vladimir Putin in 2010, allocated 19.4 trillion rubles (worth $698.4 billion at the time) to revamp the equipment and weapons used by the Russian armed forces, and Russia’s military expenditures have been increasing both in absolute terms and as a percent of Russia’s GDP ever since.

Russia has taken some impressive steps forward. In 2008, it is unlikely Russia could have fielded a force and deployed it in Syria as it did in 2015. Of all the weapons Russia used in Syria, roughly 20% have been precision-guided munitions, which shows progress… but it also shows how much room Russia has to grow. Russia has deployed unmanned aerial vehicles to help with intelligence gathering, and both SEAD and joint inter-service operations have improved. According to Russian military officials, conscripts in the military have been reduced from roughly 600,000 in 2011, to 200,000 by the end of 2016.

These improvements and the media campaign around the Russian intervention, however, obscure the two most important elements to consider in evaluating the Russian military. First, despite these improvements, Russia has neither the military capability nor the political capital to conquer Ukraine, even if it wanted to. Russia beat Georgia because Georgia is a small country and Russia could overwhelm the Georgians with larger numbers. Ukraine is eight times the size of Georgia in terms of total land and can field a much larger infantry force. Many of Russia’s Rapid Reaction Forces that would be mobilized in such an action still consist of significant numbers of conscripts. Even if Russia could blitz its way to Kiev, it couldn’t hold the country, considering the long supply lines and Ukraine’s large, hostile population. And if the US or NATO decided to intervene, Russia would require even greater forces.

Second, Putin and the Russian government are aware of these limitations. Since 2008, they have been doing everything possible to modernize the Russian armed forces and to reach, if not parity, then a level of strength that could give them more strategic options. That has meant increasing military spending.
While Russia was flush with oil money, that was a perfectly logical plan. But Russia was not expecting oil prices to collapse in 2014. Russia had planned a budget on the then-conservative estimate that oil wouldn’t fall below $82 a barrel. Oil has averaged between $34 and $35 a barrel in 2016, and there’s no reason to expect the oversupplied market to give Russia significant relief in the coming year. Modernizing Russia’s forces is one of the top priorities for the government in the next three years, but it’s not clear if Russia has the money to spend.

Like I said…it is starting to smell a lot like 1949.

Closing Thought–27Dec16

Today I celebrate my 10th anniversary of blogging.

Ten years ago today I started my blog as a way to fight the depression that I was falling into after badly screwing up my right leg after a fall…..I had learned that I would no longer be able to work that took physical exercise since my leg was only about 70% and painful all the time……so I was put out to pasture as they say…..

In the 10 years I have made some amazing friends here on IST…..I been able to get 1900+ followers and an outlet for my opinionated ass.  In these years I have made few adjustments to this blog….name changes and series that just did not generate much interest…..for the most part….what you see is what you get.

This short post is to say thank you for all the people that have chosen to visit and to comment on IST…..to me it is a success maybe not by some people’s definition of the word….but to me it has been an amazing trip…

I hope to continue for as long as I can and hope all my followers will stick with me and help me make this even more successful……and a great journey.

Thank you, my friends.

May The Force Be With Her

Sad news today….Carrie Fischer dies at age 60…..

Actress Carrie Fisher has died after a heart attack on board a flight from London to Los Angeles. Best known for playing Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies, Fisher was 60.

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” Simon Halls, spokesman for Fisher’s daughter said on Tuesday in a statement reported by People magazine.

Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Friday when she suffered a heart attack. She was evacuated from the flight and rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was reported stable in the Intensive Care Unit.

May the force be with her and may she rest in peace…….

She will be missed.

Who’s The Boss?

Nope, not some nostalgic crap about a 1980’s sitcom….this is a real question after a vote at the Untied Nations…..for decades the Israelis have been stealing land from Palestinians under a cloud of deceit and lies…..finally the UN has stepped up and given a resolution against this land theft.

Israel’s liar in chief BiBi is fuming over the vote and is pissed at the US for not voting instead we abstained….

The Israeli government’s furious reaction to the UN Security Council’s adoption of a resolution opposing Jewish settlements in occupied territory underscores its fundamental and bitter dispute with the international community about the future of the West Bank and east Jerusalem, writes Josef Federman at AP. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists there is nothing wrong with his controversial policy of building Jewish towns in occupied areas that the Palestinians, with overwhelming world support, claim for their state. But Friday’s UN rebuke was a stark reminder that the rest of the world considers it a crime. The embattled leader is now placing his hopes in the incoming administration of Donald Trump, which is shaping up as the first major player to embrace Israel’s nationalist right and its West Bank settlements.

In a series of statements, Netanyahu has criticized the Obama administration for letting Resolution 2334 pass Friday by abstaining, using unprecedented language that has turned a policy disagreement into a personal vendetta. “From the information that we have, we have no doubt that the Obama administration initiated it, stood behind it, coordinated on the wording, and demanded that it be passed,” Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday. The resolution marked a sharp international rebuke of Israeli settlement policies in the West Bank and east Jerusalem—territories captured in the 1967 Mideast war and claimed by the Palestinians as parts of a future independent state. Some 600,000 Israelis now live in the two areas, complicating any partition of the land between Israel and a future Palestine. On Sunday, Netanyahu also summoned the US ambassador and the ambassadors of 10 other nations to protest the vote, reports USA Today.

BiBi has been lying for 20 years to the American public….and what is it to say that he continues to do so……but he says what every demagogue says…..BiBi is butt hurt and vows REVENGE…not on the US but on Palestinians…..a true peaceful humanitarian.  (He’s a douche)

As a response to the resolution, Israel and it’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to conduct ‘revenge demolitions‘ of Palestinian homes; approved building some 5,600 housing units in East Jerusalem for illegal settlements;  cut funding to five UN institutions worth $7.8 million; threatened to directly target UNRWA with Trump’s help; and recalled it’s ambassadors from Senegal and New Zealand.

What’s he gonna do?  Israel needs the US more than the US needs Israel.  I say call his bluff…that is what you do to bullies and dolts……

Keeping watching the news….the fallout of this situation……you will see WHO is really in charge of the government of the US….it has already begun…..Senators on the Israeli payroll are already voicing their handlers words….

Could It Be WW3 By Mistake?

I have in the past looked for that linch pin, an occurrence that could start a World War (kinda like Sarajevo in 1914), a place that could ignite into a major conflict….but recently with all the babble about fake news….. could something be written on social media that could be that spark?

But first a little historic perspective from 1980……

Harsh political rhetoric, combined with the vulnerability of the nuclear command-and-control system, has made the risk of global catastrophe greater than ever.

On June 3, 1980, at about two-thirty in the morning, computers at the National Military Command Center, beneath the Pentagon, at the headquarters of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), deep within Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, and at Site R, the Pentagon’s alternate command post center hidden inside Raven Rock Mountain, Pennsylvania, issued an urgent warning: the Soviet Union had just launched a nuclear attack on the United States. The Soviets had recently invaded Afghanistan, and the animosity between the two superpowers was greater than at any other time since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

U.S. Air Force ballistic-missile crews removed their launch keys from the safes, bomber crews ran to their planes, fighter planes took off to search the skies, and the Federal Aviation Administration prepared to order every airborne commercial airliner to land.

Now for the social media thingy…..there was an incident in 2016 that could have led to a massive reaction…..

If 2016 is the year of the fake news story, then it’s ending in appropriate fashion: One bogus story has just led to a veiled threat of nuclear retaliation. As the Times of Israel explains, the craziness began when a fake news site, AWD News, ran a fake story in which an Israeli official accuses Pakistan of meddling in Syria and warns that Israel would attack Islamabad with nuclear weapons in response. One clue it’s a fake story: The Israeli official quoted is named as defense minister Yoshe Ma’alon, but he left the post months ago. However, this did not deter Pakistani defense chief Khawaja Mohammad Asif, who responded to the fake nuclear threat with a tweet that sounds uncomfortably close to a real one: “Israeli def min threatens nuclear retaliation presuming pak role in Syria against Daesh. Israel forgets Pakistan is a Nuclear state too.”

Israel’s defense ministry tweeted back that the story is “entirely false,” reports the New York Times. Pakistan hasn’t yet responded. This, however, isn’t Asif’s first threat regarding his country’s nuclear arsenal. In September, he warned that Pakistan would consider using tactical nuclear weapons against India if it were threatened by its neighbor, reported the Times of India. For the record, Israel maintains a policy of what the AP terms “nuclear ambiguity:” It has neither confirmed nor denied that it has such an arsenal.

Sometimes the major insanity of war is ignited by one small seemingly insignificant spark…these days are dangerous and volatile….caution and commonsense are needed now more than ever…..two characteristics that are sadly lacking.

A Geopolitical Convergence Between The US And Russia

For years now many pundits have been saying the the US and Russia are on a collision course….there have been minor confrontations but they, the experts, claiming that a major situation is due to occur in the future….some say the near future.

I read a good piece but it does have a pro-Russia lean to it….nonetheless it makes some good points and some outstanding observations.

It has to be recognized that the Cold War bipolarity after 1989 was, at least up to 2008, superseded by the US-led unipolarity – a hegemonic configuration of the US accumulated hyper power in global politics that presented quite new challenges to the international relations. However, after the event of 9/11, the US administration started to act on the accelerating achievement after the Cold War of supreme political and military power in the globe for the sake to complete a mission of a global hegemon. The US administration, however, purposely presented the 9/11 attack as the work of (only) a network of Al Qaeda, a Islamic terrorist organization led by Osama bin Laden who was a Saudi millionaire’s son but as well as „who learned his terrorist trade, with U.S. assistance, fighting Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s“.[6] The US administration of the President George W. Bush responded very quickly and by the end of 2001 a Taliban regime in Afghanistan, that was a radical Islamic regime which was providing a base of operations for Al Qaeda, became demolished and the biggest part of the country occupied or controlled in a coalition with the US satellite states. That was the beginning of the announced „War on Terrorism“ that actually had to serve as a good excuse to further strengthen the US position as the global policeman followed by the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Therefore, a policy of a global unipolarity – a condition of a global politics in which a system of international relations is dictated by a single dominant power-hegemon that is quite capable of dominating all other states, became an order of the day for both the Pentagon and the White House.

WE will be watching the situation…..we have new president that seems to be a “friend” to Russia and its leader, Putin….the military front is the place to watch….and for both sides…..the game of “Risk” has begun

Every confrontation could be another small step to a major confrontation.

Closing Thought–26Dec16

‘Tis the day after Christmas and I hope all went well on that special day for all my readers and followers…..now we prepare for the next big day…New Year’s.

One thought before I start……..Christmas that magical time for Christians….but did anyone notice that those good Christians in a time of “good will toward men” could not cease their vulgar attacks on any one that does not agree with their perverted mindset?  Good Christians everyone.

Enough…time to move on….

I am not a techno geek and I am a blogger and I use Twitter basically for news but many of my friends and readers are on Facebook….I am not one of those….I did not trust the Facebook format at all from the very beginning so I avoided it like a plague….these days our intel group is visiting our social media outlets regularly….at least they could do is leave a positive note……

But I read something about Facebook that is disturbing to me……

Facebook released its latest transparency report today, detailing government requests for user data for the first half of 2016. According to the report, government requests for account data increased by 27 percent globally as compared with the last half of 2015. The number of requests grew from 46,710 to 59,229, Facebook said.

The majority of the requests (56 percent) received from U.S. law enforcement contained a non-disclosure clause that prevented Facebook from notifying the user in question, the company noted.

As with prior transparency reports, Facebook also detailed the number of content restriction requests — that is, the requests from governments in response to postings that violate local laws.

I wonder how many “hacks” were done without the official “request”?

Call me paranoid if you like…but I would sooner kiss a rattlesnake than trust Facebook.

Thoughts?

See you guys tomorrow….have a day….chuq
