“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”

Ah!  Fond memories of my youth……”Sgt. Pepper’s” album….back in the day many believed that the title meant the use of the drug LSD….maybe because so many were experimenting with the drug in real life.

Ask anyone who used the “good stuff” not the crap they pass off today and you will hear about creativity and expanded thought…..of course some will prefer to believe the stories of people diving out windows thinking they could fly….well my experience was NOTHING along those lines…..the only “bad trip” of the people I knew was a guy who dropped acid and then took a shower and he started to cry because he thought he was melting…..he did no harm to myself or anyone else……

The reason I bring this up is because there is a study from the UK about the use of LSD and the brain……

After taking the first-ever look at how the brain functions on LSD, Imperial College, London researchers sound nearly as enthusiastic about the drug as Timothy Leary. The team scanned the brains of 20 volunteers on the drug and discovered that not only did it increase connectivity between parts of the brain that usually perform specialized functions, many of those areas became involved in visual processing, leading to complex, dreamlike hallucinations and other visual effects, CNET reports. The researchers, whose study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists, say the more “unified” brain they witnessed could explain why LSD users describe feeling more at one with the universe, and sometimes report increased well-being even long after the trip is over.

“This is to neuroscience what the Higgs boson was to particle physics,” senior researcher David Nutt, once the British government’s drug adviser, tells the Guardian. He says scientists have “waited 50 years for this moment,” but “enormous hurdles” have made it difficult to research LSD since the drug was banned in the ’60s. “For the first time we can really see what’s happening in the brain during the psychedelic state, and can better understand why LSD had such a profound impact on self-awareness in users and on music and art,” he says. “This could have great implications for psychiatry, and helping patients overcome conditions such as depression.”

    1. Not if you were one of the subjects that got such high dosage that they think they are GOD. But made for a happy subject.

  3. I read an interesting article years and years ago, about experiments performed by legitimate scientists before it was banned. The chemical that is significant enters the fluid in the neurons of our system, where nerves come together to pass along information from the nerve endings. The chemical alters (in an unknown fashion) the chemical balance in the fluid, thereby altering the information passed from one neuron to the next… This, of course, is why we get the apparent hallucinations, as our brains attempt to process the altered information.

I suppose, if done right, in the right dosage, it could very well act as an enhancement, once the brain learns to interpret the new form the information is presented, which it will always do, given the time.

To my mind, there are some rather exciting possibilities implied for enhancing the scope of our abilities…. Sadly, there are also some pretty scary implications, as it could also imply a path to mind control by immoral persons, of which our species has no lack.

Fascinating stuff. Personally, having only taken it once (the very finest made by Owsley, of ancient fame in Berkeley), I was not impressed with it, as it was less comfortable than fun. I guess my brain was too grounded in normal paths of perception, and didn’t like the altered state as much as that found with other substances….

Having thus given away much of my own past, I’ll say, keep an eye on what you eat, ffolkes. It doesn’t take much to be affected…

      1. Oh gawd and the yellow snow….I never dropped but many of my friends did or I guess still may, do. It was always a pleasant experience to be with them… However because of the fact that I am a sheeple and because I’m a paranoid idiot, who is influenced by peer groups, who can makes me Nutz, all by themselves, and this was WAY B4 my DX of clinical depression and inanity caused by anxiety, so I didn’t drop because I actually though I might think I could fly. Timothy and the CIA none the less, I’d try it now in a controlled environment but sigh….there are no clinical trials where I exist.

Oh, SGT.P aside; the Stones were correct, they did “out live” and out publish ’em. Shit evidently the London School of Economics really can teach an artist something about survival. dru

        ps chuq….I LOVE THE WEEKENDS!

  4. I have to get a little facetious here for the sake of the humor implicit in this post of yours and here, for the record books is my exercise in facetiousity: “When I dropped a tab …. back in the day … way way way back in the day (1961) … I did not get to the point where I “Thought” I was God … I got to the point where I “Knew” it …. and some of that has stuck to this day — especially when I compare myself to some of the dweebs who inhabit the sewers of the political internet … basically establishment elites who change their drawers the same as I do … whenever they choose to change them that is … which I suspect (from the smell of them) isn’t always that often sometimes …LOL … Snark!

Great post! Great fun to read!

Truthfully however, I never had the experiences like some of my friends did. I had this one friend who popped a tab and actually believed his feet had grown to the plush carpet in his glittering gold-plated apartment.
