Only the Pentagon Could Spend $640 on a Toilet Seat

I try to point out just how much money the Pentagon wastes in the course of “doing business”…..we all know the famous stories of a $1000 screw or the $200 hammer and of course the “famous” $600 toilet seat…..but the waste goes much deeper than those that get highlighted occasionally….

What your tax dollars go towards at America’s defense headquarters.

From spending $150 million on private villas for a handful of personnel in Afghanistan to blowing $2.7 billion on an air surveillance balloon that doesn’t work, the latest revelations of waste at the Pentagon are just the most recent howlers in a long line of similar stories stretching back at least five decades.  Other hot-off-the-presses examples would include the Army’s purchase of helicopter gears worth $500 each for $8,000 each and the accumulation of billions of dollars’ worth of weapons components that will never be used. And then there’s the one that would have to be everyone’s favorite Pentagon waste story: the spending of $50,000 to investigate the bomb-detecting capabilities of African elephants. (And here’s a shock: they didn’t turn out to be that great!) The elephant research, of course, represents chump change in the Pentagon’s wastage sweepstakes and in the context of its $600-billion-plus budget, but think of it as indicative of the absurd lengths the Department of Defense will go to when what’s at stake is throwing away taxpayer dollars.

Yes this is an awful waste……if we accept that then the next point is how did this happen?

The truly sad part is that many Americans DO NOT care how much is wasted as long as it is not wasted on poor people or hungry people…..pathetic!

  1. American pays more attention to feeding illegals than they do in feeding their own citizens because … America is the land of opportunity and there is no excuse for anybody in America to be either poor or hungry. We have a raging obesity problem … especially among the so-called poor. They must be finding something to eat to get that darned fat! I do not like the idea of “Poor” people in America because all those I know that are supposed to be poor live better on the dole than I do on my earned-pension. So where is all this “American Hunger and American ‘Poor’ stuff coming from anyway?

    1. Illegals have little to with the waste that we Americans tolerate all in the name of national security….so you think the poor are better off? Geez John, we picked the wrong subject….and this illustrates what I am saying.

      1. The coincept of “Poor” in America is either an oxymoron or somebody’s political fantasy to be used for agenda promotion. There are no “Poor” in America. “Poor” people do not have cell phones and 60-inch TV sets and they do not have steaks and lobster for dinner on their EBT cards and they do not have access to the most expensive hospital services … or housing assistance .. or educational assistance … The “Poor” in America live very high on the hog when International Comparisons can be made. The “Poor” in America are rich in the eyes of some of the Ethiopians, for example.

      2. You should probably live where I do then because I am telling you the truth. The supposed-to-be “Slums” near where I live are filled with 3rd generation welfare bums who play the system and who live just as good as anybody with a steady job … free food, help with rent, help with raising their kids, help with school expenses, free medical care on welfare care cards, large-screen television sets, decent automobiles, free cell phones … I have seen it, I have experienced it, I have communicated with a lot of these people and one of them even brags about how he will never have to punch a time card in his life and the only thing wrong with him is that he is an alcoholic who has convinced a doctor to certify him as disabled for work so he can draw his monthly $900+ SSI check. It’s disgusting and it’s real and it is the America where I live.

      3. Then you should get out of state more because I am telling you the truth…there are very few poor people living high on the hog….unless of course you choose to believe the rags that call themselves news.

      4. I have friends in Kentucky who cannot wait to cash their welfare checks and that is about all they have. — I have lived in Biloxi, Mississippi and I have seen some of the squalor that used to decorate the Atlanta skyline — and I remember affirmative action … and I have been to almost every state in the union … with very few exceptions ….There are people who have learned to game the system and who will never work a day in their lives because they know they can live in relative ease on the government handouts.

  2. Both the post, and the comments, are enough to convince me to NOT get started on any of this subject (i.e. waste in America). Instead, to save time and angst, I’ll leave y’all with some thoughts on the subject from one of our most cogent ancient sages…

“The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.” — Aristotle

“It is not the possessions but the desires of mankind which require to be equalized.” — Aristotle

    1. This always happens….and the comments proved my point…..it was all about waste at the Pentagon and instead I get “welfare queen” bullshit…..chuq

      1. Aye… ’tis why I passed on it, & let Ari make my point for me

But WC Fields remark fits well, too

“You can’t cheat an honest man.”…

  3. A $3 million lost blimp? $50,000 to blow up elephants? Just some more crap to be filed under “MISC spending”!
