Closing Thought–16Sep19

When I was in the military (1967-1971) the best food was at Navy installations in second place was the Air Force….but that was the days when we had cooks not culinary specialists.

The US military is hell bent on the appearance of their members. Are they buff? Are they overweight? Are they in good shape?

So which service branch is the most obese?

The US Navy takes the prize.

Sailors need remedial physical training.

That could be one just one of many conclusions drawn by a recent Department of Defense study that found the Navy earned the dubious honor of surpassing all other branches in its rate of obese personnel.

The overall rate of fat service members is also up from recent years, with the percentage of personnel weighing in at obese standards climbing to over 17 percent, according to a Health of the DoD Force study.

That number spiked to over a quarter of service members over the age of 35.

For the Navy, the overall number of obese personnel was a shocking 22 percent. The other branches reported the following frequency of obesity:

  • Air Force: 18 percent
  • Army: 17 percent
  • Marine Corps: 8.3 percent

I guess the food is still pretty damn good, huh?

SEALs Have A Problem

My first reaction is to say “NO SH*T”…..

I have been writing about their problems for a couple of years now….https://lobotero.com/2019/07/29/what-the-hell-has-happened/

Now the commander of the SEALs has recognized the problem in public…..

The commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command put the words “We have a problem” in bold font. “I don’t know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately,” reads the July 25 letter from Rear Adm. Collin Green, the man in charge of Navy SEALs. The letter obtained by CNN and the New York Times orders commanders to bring forth problems and recommendations for how to ensure ethical and professional behavior following a series of embarrassing incidents, reports CNN. “This is our main effort and my top priority,” Green writes, noting the culture of the force “is being questioned … for good reason” as “some of our subordinate formations have failed to maintain good order and discipline.”

Retired Navy SEAL Eric Deming brought his concerns to Green on Monday. “I got two boys that are old enough, I wouldn’t even let them be part of [the force],” he tells CBS News. An entire SEAL platoon was sent home from Iraq after allegations of sexual assault and unauthorized drinking. Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, accused of war crimes, was convicted of unlawfully posing with an enemy corpse. And two SEALs were implicated in the 2017 hazing death of a Green Beret just months after members of SEAL Team 10 were found to have used cocaine in April 2018. Green says addressing such issues is necessary to “recalibrate our culture and regain our credibility.” The head of all special operations forces, Gen. Richard Clarke, is expected to address ethics in his own letter to the force, per CNN.

Recognizing the problems is not a solution…it can be a good beginning but progress must be made.

Then ask…is it a problem that can be corrected?

I have even heard rumblings that the SEALs should be abolished…and I have read an opinion on this questions…..

I recently saw this question posed on Quora and it made me think. Let me start by answering with my opinion, which is NO. But . . .

It’s interesting to look at the history. Marcinko ended up in Federal Prison after he founded Red Cell. I’ve met the man, did booksignings with him, and even was asked to co-write some of his fiction, which I declined. I just didn’t agree with his leadership philosophy as set out in Rogue Warrior. Essentially it was “Do it MY way” not the Navy’s way. His rules took precedence over the legal rules. To me, that was a recipe for disaster which is bearing fruit now.

I’m not certain but I’ve heard that Admiral McRaven who commanded SOCOM and was a SEAL was assigned to 6 and asked to be transferred out due to the slack command culture.

Should the SEALS be abolished?

I hope that the SEALs find a solution……as long as we continue our adventurism and interventions worldwide we will need the SEALs at full capacity and at the ready.

After writing this draft news came out that the head of the SEALs has ordered an investigation…..

The head of U.S. Special Operations Command is initiating a comprehensive review of all Special Operations Forces culture and ethics, according to a memo he sent to commanders Friday evening.

“Recent incidents have called our culture and ethics into question and threaten the trust placed in us,” Gen. Richard Clarke wrote. The review will focus on recruiting, how new SOF members are selected, how leaders are trained and grown, how the force is educated about ethics and how ethical failures are addressed.

The review comes after a string of high-profile incidents involving Special Operations Forces, which include the Navy SEALs, the Green Berets and the Delta Force, among others.

This is a long time coming….hopefully this will help the SEALs change the course they have been traveling.

What The Hell Has Happened?

The question is aimed at our elite fighting force, the US Navy SEALs.

There discipline problems keep mounting up and up……

First they are involved in the death of a fellow special ops soldier in Mali…..https://lobotero.com/2019/05/20/death-in-mali-is-justice-served/

Then word came out that there was a discipline problem within the SEALs…..https://lobotero.com/2018/10/26/socom-you-have-a-problem/….as well as…..https://lobotero.com/2018/10/19/its-about-the-discipline/

Just recently the SEALs have been asked to leave Iraq because of their problems…..

A Naval Special Warfare platoon has been recalled from the war zone after their leader lost trust in their ability to carry out their mission — an extraordinary move for a command that has faced recent troubling discipline problems.

The commander of the Special Operations Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq ordered a SEAL team platoon to return to San Diego “due to a perceived deterioration of good order and discipline within the team during non-operational periods,” officials with U.S. Special Operations Command announced in a Wednesday night release.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/2019/07/24/navy-seals-kicked-out-iraq-over-deterioration-good-order-and-discipline.html

Then there was the recent news of SEAL Team 6……

A member of the famed Navy SEAL Team 6 has reportedly been charged with pretending to be another person via text message to get nude photos of women.

Charge documents show that Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Howard has been accused of pretending to be multiple people while requesting the pictures, The Virginian Pilot reported Friday

https://thehill.com/policy/defense/navy/454941-member-of-seal-team-6-charged-with-impersonating-someone-to-get-nude-pics

What has happened to the “best of the best”?

SEALs were walking on water as the best military force in the world a decade ago. They killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. They rescued Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates. No one seemed more professional or capable than they were.

The only thing more remarkable about how much esteem the SEALs had is how far they’ve fallen since then. In the latest disgrace, the special operations commander in Iraq just unceremoniously kicked out a SEAL platoon, “Due to a perceived deterioration of good order and discipline within the team during non-operational periods,” U.S. Special Operations Command has announced.

“The Commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission,” A SOCOM news release said.

Defense officials are not saying exactly what these special operators did to deserve being sent back to San Diego early, but Navy Times Editor Carl Prine revealed the SEALs allegedly threw an alcohol-soaked July 4th party.

https://taskandpurpose.com/navy-seals-discipline-problem

What the Hell is going on within the ranks of the SEALs?

Can the SEALs reclaim their exemplary reputation or will they continue to slide into the muck?  Counties should be aware of these problems before they invite them into the fray.

U.S. special operations forces are adored by politicians and the public, their reputations burnished by feats like the raid on Osama bin Laden, the sea rescue of the Maersk Alabama’s captain and countless other daring operations against high-value targets around the globe. But the special ops brand — brave, honorable, can-do warriors achieving the impossible — is now being undermined by reports of battlefield lawlessness, loyalty over integrity, a willingness to challenge commands and a seeming pattern of disciplinary impunity.

Just this week, the U.S. Special Operations Command called home an entire Navy SEAL platoon from Iraq “due to a perceived deterioration of good order and discipline. … The commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission.”

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/07/26/special-forces-values-crisis-congress-must-investigate-fix-column/1790315001/

SEAL Team 6 is not alone Team 10 has its problems as well…….

Before they were caught last year, several SEAL Team 10 special warfare operators snorted cocaine or spiked their booze with the banned substance, often defeating military drug tests they termed “a joke,” according to an internal investigation obtained by Navy Times.

The Little Creek, Virginia-based command conducted urinalysis testing on April 9 and April 16, 2018, nabbing six SEALs for allegedly abusing cocaine and other banned substances.

Several SEALs told investigators they previously beat the testing program by swapping out tainted urine for clean samples — but they weren’t screened very often anyway.

Has their “Celebrity” gone to their collective heads?

How long will this continue before some concrete changes are made?

Remember The USS Liberty!

Today my Saturday will be in remembrance of the American deaths from the bastards that attacked the US Naval ship, the USS Liberty…..since I am giving so much information for my reader to digest this will be my only post today.

Image result for USS Liberty

Every year on the day of the attack, 08 June, I do a post on the USS Liberty in honor of those killed and wounded by the cowardly attack by Israel on a US Naval ship….There are many articles and papers written about this attack and I try to give my reader a library of work on the situation…..so they can better understand what happened on that fateful day.

And yes it was a fateful day…34 American sailors were murdered by a supposed ally, Israel and the US allowed the cowardly attack to go unanswered.

As they say….it’s a small world…..look at how all these situations are intertwine…..

And we have been protecting Israel from paying for their crimes and the list is substantial ever since that attack.

These Americans should NEVER have been forgotten….and they have for most of the society….I hopefully can help their memory endure.

For those that need visuals……

Please help a country remember their dead…..sailors they have mostly forgotten.

REMEMBER THE LIBERTY!

Please Pass it On!

Allow me to reiterate…..That is a lot of information to be digested so this will be my only post for the day……..

Have a good start to the weekend and may your day be filled with joy and love…..

Military Gets Politicized (Again)

On the trip to Japan Our Beloved Supreme Leader (accusation not confirmed) wanted the ship USS McCain hidden from view……(My post) https://lobotero.com/2019/05/31/uss-john-mccain/

Personally, I feel that our military is too much in the news as a political tool of sorts…..

The Pentagon has told the White House to stop politicizing the military, amid a furor over a Trump administration order to have the Navy ship named for the late US Sen. John McCain hidden from view during President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Japan, the AP reports. A senior Trump aide scoffed at the idea that anyone working for the White House might be punished, saying, “We think it’s much ado about nothing.” A US defense official said Patrick Shanahan, Trump’s acting defense chief, is also considering sending out formal guidance to military units in order to avoid similar problems in the future. Shanahan confirmed details about a Navy email that said the White House military office wanted the USS John McCain kept “out of sight” when Trump was in Japan about a week ago.

This was all too petty to be taken seriously….and then the email came to light……

The internal Navy email came to light last week, triggering a storm of outrage. Trump, who long feuded with McCain, has said he knew nothing about the request, but added that “somebody did it because they thought I didn’t like him, OK? And they were well-meaning, I will say.” Shanahan told reporters traveling with him to South Korea on Sunday that he is not planning to seek an investigation by the Pentagon’s internal watchdog into the matter “because there was nothing carried out” by the Navy. He added that he still needs to gather more information about exactly what happened and what service members did. “How did the people receiving the information—how did they treat it,” Shanahan said. “That would give me an understanding on the next steps” to take.

This is a prime example of using the military as a political tool……but not many of the sycophants that work in the Trump White House take this seriously……

Asking the US Navy to conceal a ship named after three generations of American war heroes to avoid potentially irritating the president was “not an unreasonable thing,” according to Mick Mulvaney. The acting White House chief of staff told NBC‘s Meet the Press Sunday that it was “probably someone on the advance team” from the White House that asked the Navy to keep the USS John McCain out of sight during President Trump’s visit to a naval base in Japan last week. “The fact that some 23 or 24-year-old person on the advance team went to that site and said ‘Oh my goodness, there’s the John McCain, we all know how the president feels about the former senator, maybe that’s not the best backdrop, can somebody look into moving it?’ That’s not an unreasonable thing,” Mulvaney argued.

Host Chuck Todd (not one of my favorites) apparently couldn’t believe Mulvaney was trying to defend the request, Slate reports. “Seriously?” he asked. Mulvaney went on to say the person responsible for the request, which the Navy confirmed on Sunday, would not be fired. “The president’s feeling towards the former senator are well known,” he said. “They are well known throughout the office, they are well known in the media, but to think you’re gonna get fired over this is silly.” Later, on Fox News Sunday, Mulvaney said nobody would even be disciplined over the “minor issue.” The USS John McCain, originally named after Sen. John McCain’s father and grandfather, both Navy admirals, was rededicated last year to include the late senator.

This whole affair is just silly and a bit pathetic. But then that describes this administration to a tee.

We Have Been Warned!

It seems, it has been reported, that China has warned the US about sailing into the disputed waters in the South China Sea…..yes I said WARNED!

China said on Monday that it has warned two US ships sailing near disputed islands in the South China Sea to leave the area.

The move comes amid heightened tension between Beijing and Washington over trade tariffs, sanctions and Taiwan.

Warships in the South China Sea

  • US guided-missile destroyers Preble and Chung-Hoon traveled within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs.
  • The reefs form part of the Spratly Islands, a region of the South China Sea over which China claims sovereignty.
  • The Foreign Ministry said the US vessels entered the waters without Chinese permission.

‘Infringed on Chinese sovereignty’

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a press conference that China “is strongly dissatisfied and is resolutely opposed” to the US operation.

https://www.dw.com/en/china-warns-us-after-warships-sail-in-disputed-south-china-sea/a-48614428

Interesting turn of events……usually the US is the country warning others with our might and now the shoe is on the other foot.

China is expanding and the Pacific is their “backyard”…..

On September 30th 2018, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy Type 052C destroyer Lanzhou maneuvered dangerously close to American guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur as it patrolled the South China Sea. Lanzhou came within 50 meters of Decatur’s bow, sounding collision warnings on the bridge as radio calls went unanswered. Chinese skippers typically shadow U.S. vessels in these contested waters, but this behavior was uncharacteristically aggressive.

Decatur was conducting what the U.S. calls a freedom-of-navigation operation  near Gaven Reef in the hotly-contested Spratly Islands.[1] These operations demonstrate the U.S. Navy’s ability to transit international waters under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea—a treaty the U.S. recognizes even if it has not ratified it.[2] China, which is a party to the law of the sea convention, claims adherence to its letter but often violates its spirit with excessive maritime claims.[3]

Things are still tense in the South China Sea….maybe the US should focus on this instead of issuing more tariffs that will make any situation worse……this situation will be tense and will be watched……hopefully calmer intentions and/of rhetoric will prevail.

Wag The Dog!

Trump over the weekend was freaking out on Twitter over the announcement that Mueller would be testifying before Congress this month.

Then from the shadows came the word that the US was deploying a strike group to the Middle East….

The United States will send an aircraft carrier and a bomber task force to the Middle East in response to “troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” from Iran, national security advisor John Bolton announced on Sunday.

Bolton, who is known for his hawkish stance on Iran, did not specify what “warnings” the United States was responding to; however, a U.S. official with knowledge of the situation told CNN that threats had been made against “both U.S. maritime and land-based forces in the Middle East.”

Although there has been no indication that “any action by Iran is imminent,” the deployments are meant as a deterrent, the official told the news network.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Sunday that the U.S. had seen “escalatory actions from the Iranians,” AP reported. He refused to elaborate on what these actions entailed, yet insisted that “we have good reason to want to communicate clearly about how the Iranians should understand how we will respond to actions they may take.”

What troubling developments?

Was this the news to deflect the temper tantrum our Dear Beloved Supreme Leader is having during his most recent meltdown?

Please tell me this is not some BS to “protect” Israel.

With all the aid they get from the US they are well capable of protecting themselves from rockets and stones.

Speaking of rockets…..what happened to their “Iron Dome” defense…a system that the US is suppose to buy….if rockets get through maybe it is not as effective as they say…..maybe the US should save that cash.  (Sounds like a good topic for a post)

My money is on trying to divert attention from Trump to Iran…..a diversion too often used by this administration (well most admins have used this technique)……..
