Three Thanksgivings

Another Thanksgiving has passed into the memories of our nation….and it is another time when troops are away from their loved ones…..we see glowing tributes by the different media companies to show that their spirits and mental make-up is just ducky and all is well….but is it?

I read an article by Maj. Danny Sjursen that I felt I needed to share with my readers……

Millions of American troops have spent countless holidays away from home, in Iraq, Afghanistan and various smaller wars across the region – it’s worth asking what it’s all for.

The memories can be fond, some of them anyway. Patrolling in the morning with a platoon full of mates – brothers, really – and then returning to base to share decent turkey dinners flown in for our enjoyment. We wore dirty uniforms, gorged ourselves on turkey and sides, and washed it all down with plentiful doses of nonalcoholic beer and energy drinks. Another year, sticking around the chow hall after the holiday meal to watch cricket matches with the vaguely Pakistani contractors who prepared and served our food, desperately trying to learn the rules of the odd sport.

For all the hardships of three holidays spent in Iraq and Afghanistan (2006, 2007, and 2011), the army never failed to get us a Thanksgiving Dinner of sorts. There was a certain sadness, of course, about being away from family and friends – but it was surprisingly easy to face the day and manage a smile in front of the troops. Our humor was dark – dark as hell – but, in times since, I’ve rarely laughed so hard. In a way, Thanksgivings at war weren’t all that bad.

A National Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has always been a day for doing the thing that it is entitled……giving thanks…..

And as usual the Old Professor wants to add some history to your day of rest and good food……

Thanksgiving is a peculiar holiday, at least in the modern world. Its roots are religious, and the American nation is, at least in law, secular.   Its very name speaks of thanks, or gratitude, and gratitude is an ancient virtue.  Indeed Aristotle speaks highly of it.  Even so, or perhaps for that reason, it is very American.  In his Thanksgiving address in 1922, President Coolidge called it “perhaps the most characteristic of our national observances.”   He was not wrong for, as Chesterton wrote, America is “a nation with the soul of a church,” and Abraham Lincoln called us an “almost chosen people.”

The holiday reminds us, in other words, of the peculiar character of the American nation, and of the President’s role in it.  Strictly speaking, to be an American is to be an American citizen.  When one calls someone an American, the first definition one usually has in mind is political.   By contrast, when one says that someone is Chinese or Turkish, the first thought is of an ethnic or racial identity.  Even so, there is an American culture.  Hence it is very common to say that something is “very American.”  Thanksgiving itself deserves that moniker.   Is it a constitutional observance?  That’s an open question.

I will do very little today but cook and then go to my daughter’s house for the meal…..turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, Made from scratch Mac and Cheese, green bean casserole, green peas, cranberry sauce (jellied not whole berry) bread and gravy with peach cobbler for dessert……and after the meal we will sit around the table in their garden and drink a bit of sherry and/or brandy……I would play golf but I would rather have my toes removed one at a time……NO!  I will sit on my ass and enjoy the day and my granddaughter…..

What I Bullsh*t Speech!

Our Fearless Leader has addressed the troops on this T’Giving Day and it will make you puke.

And he spoke……

U.S. President Donald Trump gave a bullish Thanksgiving address to troops overseas on Thursday, hailing progress in Afghanistan and against ISIS, and telling them they were fighting for “something real,” including a stock market at record highs and his promised “big, beautiful fat tax cuts.”

Speaking in a live video teleconference from Palm Beach, Florida, with military personnel serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, Trump told them they were “very, very special people.”

He called troops in Afghanistan “brave, incredible fighters” who had “turned it around” in the past three to four months.

We opened it up; we said go ahead, we’re going to fight to win,” he said. “We’re not fighting any more to just walk around, we are fighting to win.”

Trump told the troops they could look forward at home to the benefits of “big, beautiful fat tax cuts,” a stock market at record highs, jobs and economic growth.

“We’re doing well at home, the economy is doing great,” Trump said. “You’re fighting for something real, you’re fighting for something good.”

Trump said he had told the troops overseas the country was “doing great,” thanks to his cuts in “regulation and all the waste and all the abuse.”

“I told them … you folks are fighting so hard and working so hard, and it’s nice that you’re working for something that’s really starting to work.”

Not a speech to the troops that are away from their loved ones fighting in whatever worthless war they are fighting…..

This was a goddamn campaign speech….but if he had ever served his country he would know this was a worthless waste of time.

A Thanksgiving History

And you thought you would get off easy because it is a holiday…..but no the mad professor is still writing and posting about history……

And NO this is not about the first Thanksgiving…..it deals with something I write a lot about….war.

Happy Thanksgiving from War on the Rocks!  Today is all about tradition: turkey and stuffing; family, friends, and football.  From early childhood, we all learn the origin story of Thanksgiving that is so mythically central to its celebration.  Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony marked a successful harvest with a feast to which they invited Native Americans who had lent much-needed assistance after the previous hard winter.  Records of earlier harvest celebrations and debates (google “thanksgiving origins” if you’re interested and have hours to kill) about the actual provenance of what would become our Thanksgiving aside, it is no surprise that the centuries-long history would make it the holiday most steeped in uniform tradition across America.

But how did thanksgiving become Thanksgiving?  The first recognition of a single, nationally celebrated holiday of Thanksgiving came in a proclamation by the Second Continental Congress in 1777, a year after it signed the Declaration of Independence.  It came as our young country’s future was far from certain, and was indeed issued from a temporary meeting site because the national capital of Philadelphia itself was then occupied by British forces.  The language was marked by its central theme of gratitude for American forces’ successes, thanking God,

See that did not hurt so bad……with this bit of history under your belt now go enjoy a meal and have some fun…..chuq

T’Giving At Taco Bell

Just a little something to think about…LOL

If you have no place to go for your T’Giving dinner then maybe a trip to Taco Bell would be to your liking….a little something special for the holiday.

I do not know how accurate this menu is but it rings of T/Giving spirit….

I think this could be an experience worth the effort….that if you have no family waiting to dazzle you with brilliance over the T/Giving meal……or it could be a gastronomical nightmare after all it is fast food outlet.

Enjoy?

Happy Thanksgiving Day–2016

I will be stepping back from the brink today and spending some time with my daughter and her family…..for some good food, wine and excellent cheeses…..stuff myself and snooze like a turtle on a rock in the sun….

I would like to wish all my readers and followers a pleasant day and a day that brings some joy into your life….we all need a bit of joy from time to time….

Go out and have some food fun and football (if that is your thing) and we will return Friday for more stuff and aggravation (tee hee)……

Love….Peace……and Smiles

Happy Thanksgiving–2015

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving…..a day when we think about all the blessings we have in our lives and in doing so give thanks for those blessings.

This will be my only post today for I will be spending the day with the people I love most…..and yes we will be eating….eating lots…….first, assorted apps like fruit, nuts, cheese and a fine Spanish Rose and then on to the main attraction…..ham, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, peas, corn and my daughter’s cheese cake…it is to die for……and after all that….a good nap is in order.

Please when you are thank whatever deity you believe in for the pleasures in life like food, family and shelter …..take some time and thank him/her that you are NOT someone that the rest of the world hates because they do not have the pleasures of life that you have…..

Go out and enjoy your time…..and get some fun in also……

I will be back in force tomorrow……

Peace out
