Foreign Policy Today

The title sounds like a PBS Special for a Sunday Night….

As an analyst of foreign policy I am always interested in what candidates have to offer….and these days I am not too thrilled with our current leader…..his foreign policy seems a bit amateurish and infantile…..

In the last 60+ years our foreign policy can be labelled a “liberal” foreign policy…..and in that time the hypocrisy of our policies have come to light….

Former US vice-president Joe Biden asserted at the 2019 Munich Security Conference that ‘this too shall pass’, referring to the Trump administration’s challenges to the transatlantic alliance structure and US commitment to multilateralism. Unfortunately, any assumption that America’s commitment to global engagement will revert to the status quo ante in 2021 if President Donald Trump is not re-elected belies the growing polarization in US public opinion about America’s role in the world.

This partisan divide in Americans’ sentiment pre-dated Trump’s election and is likely to continue whatever the outcome of the next US presidential election. Americans have long held ambivalent feelings about their relationship with the rest of the world. Many are descendants of people who turned their backs on their homelands to seek a better life in the New World. Thomas Jefferson’s admonition against ‘entangling alliances’ was a mantra taken up by isolationists in the first half of the 20th century who argued against early US entry into both world wars.

If anyone else were president, the “liberals” would be celebrating. After all, pulling American soldiers out of a couple of failing, endless wars seems like a “win” for progressives. Heck, if Obama did it there might be a ticker-tape parade down Broadway. And there should be. The intervention in Syria is increasingly aimless, dangerous and lacks an end state. Afghanistan is an unwinnable war – America’s longest – and about to end in outright military defeat. Getting out now and salvaging so much national blood and treasure ought to be a progressive dream. There’s only one problem: Donald Trump. Specifically, that it was Trump who gave the order to begin the troop withdrawals.

Lost in the haze of their pathological hatred of President Trump, the majority of mainstream liberal pundits and politicians can’t, for the life of them, see the good sense in extracting the troops from a couple Mideast quagmires. That or they can see the positives, but, in their obsessive compulsion to smear the president, choose politics over country. It’s probably a bit of both. That’s how tribally partisan American political discourse has become. And, how reflexively hawkish and interventionist today’s mainstream Democrats now are. Whither the left-wing antiwar movement? Well, except for a few diehards out there, the movement seems to have been buried long ago with George McGovern.

Then we elected Trump and in the beginning I was with him on some of his foreign policy issues but that quickly went down the toilet after he was elected and his true self came to light……

Those anticipating that President Donald Trump would spend a considerable part of his State of the Union address on foreign policy likely came away disappointed. With the exceptions of his bragging about the U.S. military being stronger and better than ever before, killing one of the al-Qaeda operatives who planned the USS Cole attack over 18 years ago, and condemning Nicolás Maduro-style socialism, Trump was noticeably subdued on events beyond America’s shores.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Trump administration’s favorite target, was portrayed as led by depraved fanatics intent on committing murder and mayhem throughout the Middle East. Russia—a country that has caused Trump all sorts of political trouble in Washington—was called out for violating the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Chinese President Xi Jinping was described as a friend while his government was excoriated as a predatory economic behemoth that has sapped America of its wealth, killed its manufacturing sector, stolen its intellectual capital, and decimated its blue-collar workforce. And Trump minced no words when briefly talking about Venezuela’s Maduro, who has plundered a once wealthy Latin American nation.

Keep in mind the above link is a conserv link and in as such can be a bit neocon in content…..

I then read an article that says that Americans want a less aggressive foreign policy….really?

For decades, American foreign policy has rested on a consensus view about the United States’ role in the world. In an international order where there is one unrivaled superpower, foreign policy experts agree that U.S. soldiers and taxpayer dollars are essential for preserving global stability. But that is an assumption that is not necessarily shared by the American public, based on the findings of a new study Worlds Apart: U.S. Foreign Policy and American Public Opinion, conducted by the Eurasia Group Foundation (EGF), an organization I serve as Board President.

No matter what party they claim allegiance to, Americans favor a foreign policy that resists entanglements abroad, the survey found—and it’s not limited to conservative libertarians on the right and liberal pacifists on the left. In every age group polled, respondents exhibited a waning appetite for the obligations and impositions of imperial governance.

I am NOT sure I agree with that conclusion. Why? I do not believe that most Americans have a grip on foreign policy beyond their favorite news channel…..

Another look at this survey…….https://www.theamericanconservative.com/larison/americans-want-greater-restraint-in-foreign-policy/

I disagree because of the public acceptance of the many many wars we are currently fight…..

It seems the only people that are fighting against all these wars are the people that had to fight them….our veterans….https://truthout.org/articles/veterans-demand-congress-end-the-forever-wars/

We need to find a way to educate the voter on our foreign policy….for as long as they stay uninformed the military can run rough shod over their decisions and as long as the MSM works as the propaganda arm of our polices we will stay in a forever war.

What we need is a Progressive foreign policy….

The 2020 election will not turn on global issues of – and more’s the pity. After all, thanks to decades upon decades of accumulating executive power in an increasingly imperial presidency, it is in foreign affairs that the commander-in-chief possesses near dictatorial power. Conversely, in domestic policy, a hostile Congress can – just ask Barry Obama – effectively block most of a president’s agenda.

Still, the vast majority of Americans don’t give a hoot about issues of war, peace, and international diplomacy. Why should they care? It’s not as though anything is asked of them as citizens. By cynically ditching the draft, Tricky Dick Nixon took the wind out of the sails of current and future antiwar movements, and permanently cleaved a gap between the U.S. people and their military. Mothers no longer lose sleep over their teenage sons serving their country and they – along with the rest of the family – quit caring about foreign policy. Such it is, and so it will be, that the 2020 presidential election is likely to be decided by “kitchen-table” affairs like healthcare, immigration, race, and taxes.

Put China In A Box

Some have pointed out to me that putting China in a box would be near impossible…..I brought this forward because of something that I read a few days ago while surfing my ass off.

Henry Kissinger,(remember that name?) had a meeting with Our Dear Leader, Donald Trump and instructed him to work with Russia to put China in a box.

Henry Kissinger suggested to President Donald Trump that the United States should work with Russia to contain a rising China.

The former secretary of state—who famously engineered the tactic of establishing diplomatic relations with China in order to isolate the Soviet Union—pitched almost the inverse of that idea to Trump during a series of private meetings during the presidential transition, five people familiar with the matter told The Daily Beast. The potential strategy would use closer relations with Russia, along with other countries in the region, to box in China’s growing power and influence.

Kissinger?  I went to a lecture he gave back in the 1980’s and went to sleep…the man is a monotone and after an hour would but a meth head to sleep.

Henry is one of the original neocons and war is all he sees at every turn.

Trump’s policies seems to be trying to do exactly what Kissinger was calling for in our foreign policy…..but is that what we truly need to be doing to China…after all they hold a lot of our debt.

Closing Thought–24Apr18

I have never been a fan of Nikki Haley as the ambassador to the UN……I thought she was too amateurish to run any sort of foreign policy venue…..

It seems that Haley has broken with her boss, Donald Trump, over the newest round of sanctions against Russia…..or should I say the sanctions that Trump refuses to implant…..Haley was very verbal when a Trump advisers tried to imply that Haley was “confused”……aand she fired back…HARD!

Nikki Haley is at war with Donald Trump. She may be his ambassador to the United Nations, but she wants to set a foreign policy all her own, closer to the global interventionism of George W. Bush or Hillary Clinton than to the muscular but restrained foreign policy that Trump campaigned on in 2016. Her differences with the president were on stark display this week, as she first announced sanctions against Russia that Trump had not approved, then shot back at the new director of the national economic council, Larry Kudlow, when he offered a diplomatic interpretation of her mistake. Kudlow ascribed her off-message remarks to “some momentary confusion,” to which Haley responded, “With all due respect, I don’t get confused.”

I do not think she will have a chance in today’s GOP…..it is not what we could call….female friendly.

Hillary Clinton and Her Hawks

I like so many other bloggers will scratch a scab until it bleeds….some see a Muslim conspiracy when they eat marshmallows and then there is me….I see a hawkish foreign policy if the good people of this country elect that neocon Clinton….and means more and more conflicts which we will be called upon to participate….

She is surrounding herself with tons of hawkish and neocons….especially those GOPers that are afraid the a Trump presidency will lessen their roll in government….

As Hillary Clinton begins her final charge for the White House, her advisers are already recommending air strikes and other new military measures against the Assad regime in Syria.

The clear signals of Clinton’s readiness to go to war appears to be aimed at influencing the course of the war in Syria as well as U.S. policy over the remaining six months of the Obama administration. (She also may be hoping to corral the votes of Republican neoconservatives concerned about Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.)

The way it is going then all we have to look forward to is more and more chances for our troops to be involved it things that we should have stayed out of……if so then we can thank the policies of our new  president, Hillary Clinton.

Neocons Come A Calling

2016 has been an unusual election in oh so many ways…..we had the huckster Trump winning the GOP nomination…..we had an old Jewish candidate that energized the young….we had our first woman that won her nomination…candidates in a Twitter war….more email scandals than we needed….all in all a very strange election process indeed.

I believe that this election will come down to the foreign policy the voter thinks is best for this country…..and because of that the Neocons, war hawks if you will, are evacuating from the GOP and lining up behind a Dem…that is right the neocons are supporting Hillary Clinton….(how strange is that?)

As Hillary Clinton puts together what she hopes will be a winning coalition in November, many progressives remain wary — but she has the war-hawks firmly behind her.

“I would say all Republican foreign policy professionals are anti-Trump,” leading neoconservative Robert Kagan told a group gathered around him, groupie-style, at a “foreign policy professionals for Hillary” fundraiser I attended last week. “I would say that a majority of people in my circle will vote for Hillary.”

As the co-founder of the neoconservative think tank Project for the New American Century, Kagan played a leading role in pushing for America’s unilateral invasion of Iraq, and insisted for years afterwards that it had turned out great.

Source: Robert Kagan and Other Neocons Are Backing Hillary Clinton

As an old hippie anti-war protester and now an anti-war writer I find this totally bizarre that a Dem, a Blue Dog Dem, can gain the support of so many neocons during the election process…..

How can this be happening?  Is it something in the water?

“Americans aren’t just electing a President in November,” Clinton told a crowd of supporters and military personnel in San Diego in early June. “We’re choosing our next commander-in-chief—the person we count on to decide questions of war and peace, life and death.”

This was Clinton’s first direct and sustained attack on Trump, and though Democrats had been preoccupied with the unsavory identity politics of the presumptive Republican nominee, Clinton devoted only a few lines to calling out Trump’s habits of “demonizing Muslims” and insulting women, Mexicans, and the disabled. Most of her speech went after Trump’s utterances on foreign policy. “Like many across our country and around the world, I believe the person the Republicans have nominated for President cannot do the job,” she said. “Donald Trump’s ideas aren’t just different—they are dangerously incoherent. They’re not even really ideas—just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds, and outright lies.”

Is this a dream?  Or maybe someone is smoking a mixture that should be made illegal?  I’m confused.

Hillary Clinton Has Long History of Collaboration with GOP on Foreign Policy

I am sure that my regulars know that I am extremely concerned about the future of the US with this election…..Neocons have turn the whole damn world against us in one form or another…..and the Dem front runner has a long history of collaboration with the Neocons….

On foreign policy the two parties are like-minded enough that when the candidate for one strays from party orthodoxy, the candidate for the other may be a more than adequate substitute.

Source: Hillary Clinton Has Long History of Collaboration with GOP on Foreign Policy

This election is too important for people to enter into it with NO knowledge of the candidates other than what they want to believe…..

Donald Vs War Hawks

The candidates for 2016 give me lots of fodder for me to attack their stands and their ideas for international relations…..to be totally honest….I am NOT impressed with any of the candidates for either party….they show me that there is NOT enough emphasis put on foreign relations….instead they set about convincing the mental midgets that they will “turn” the country around (whatever that is suppose to mean)…..and in the meantime their policy will sink the US further into the shit-hole of armed conflicts….too many to count…..

I will step away from the soapbox now……

My main concern in this election is just what will be the future of our interventionism with a new president….the past has been a absolute disaster……Bush and Obama have done nothing to improve our standing in the world….in arms delivery system we have no match…..but as a nation that can avoid war and find solutions to [problems we are a dismal failure…..

Today I would like to touch on candidate Donald Trump and his policies that have the neo-con war hawks pissed off and a little bit afraid for their future….

Neo-cons are those people that thump their chests like crazed primates but somehow manage to stay well away from any actual fighting…..

The neocons are renowned for their courage on the battlefield. There is no keyboard they are afraid to finger. No pen they won’t commandeer. When the battle cry is sounded, they unhesitatingly push the “on” button at their computers and saddle up for battle. Off with the loafers and under the desk! “Caution to the […]

The war hawks have been all choked up because of Trump’s rise to fame…..they are pushing all the buttons to try and head him, Trump, off at the pass…..

Neoconservatives, led by Eliot Cohen, a former counselor of the Department of State under Bush, and Bryan McGrath, managing director at defense contractor FerryBridge Group, penned an open letter along with 100 signatories committing themselves not to support any GOP ticket that includes Trump, writing that the Donald, “would use the authority of his office to act in ways that make America less safe, and which would diminish our standing in the world.”

Source: Neocons Are Freaking out Over Trump and It’s Hilarious | Alternet

I have been a very vocal opponent of anything neo-conservative I think they have done more harm to the reputation of the US than any one single act that we may have committed…..so to hear that these toads are running around with their heads firmly up their butts, crying foul…..just makes my day…..them having massive strokes would do the world a great favor and it turn perhaps save countless American lives….(if that sounds too harsh then maybe you should join the military and have to deal with their actions first hand)……

I could not ever vote for Trump…..but it pleases me to see him give so much grief to the toads that call themselves war hawks…..these toads need to be put in their place and I do not care who it is that does so…..even the Donald!

Go Donald…..keep up the good work!  After all there is still much treasure we have not committed to foreign wars….

The Hawkish Cult of ‘Leadership”

By now most of my regular readers are not surprised that I often quote or press the American Conservative…..they have gotten over the fact that I am an Uber-liberal that sometimes find wisdom in some conservative thought…..

I have found that some in the conservative movement do have a good grasp on foreign policy and international situations…..I may not always agree but that will not preclude me from offering up their thoughts where I see fit….

It is no secret that I think the neocons are just flipping crazy in their approach to international situations….not every problem can be fised by armed invasion or occupation…..

This is one such article that challenges the total BS of the neocons and their false dichotomy of leadership…..

Sens. Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) repeated some boilerplate hawkish nostrums on foreign policy in a recent op-ed. They concluded:We say this delicately, as we work hard to respect

Source: The Hawkish Cult of ‘Leadership’ | The American Conservative

Even the great tactician Sun Tzu knew that war was not always necessary…..but yet some refuse to see the value of thought before action…..

Ever seen the movie “Mad Max”?

As I listen to the GOP candidates, those that are still standing, I am reminded of that movie and the road warrior stuff…….

Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz are hurtling toward a chaotic crash as their three-lane road narrows to one.

“And Now…For Something Completely Different”

If you are an old fart and like me watched PBS and every show of ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus”…then you will recognize the title……so my regular readers might want to brace themselves or at least have a seat……

I am going to defend Donald Trump…..(wait for the amazement to settle down)…..you heard it right…I will defend some of the things the Donald has had to say…….

In the last GOP debate Trump made a comment about the 9/11 attack and the other GOPers are all over him saying that he is blaming GW for the attack……that is a LIE!  He said that the attacks occurred on GW’s watch and NEVER said it was his fault…..

He, Trump, is being attacked by his opponents for saying that Iraq was better off before the US attacked then occupied and that Saddam was known to go after AQ…..all of this is common knowledge……..I want to defend what he said about GW….he said…”Bush would have been better off going to the beach than into Iraq”…..that is an excellent analysis….do not know if it is his or one of his advisers….does not matter…..he is RIGHT.

The Donald has said much and not much of it was anywhere near accurate but on these two points he is……spot on!

Please make note that I have had very little positive to say about Donald Trump…..but I will be fair and give the candidate props when they are deserved….no matter which party they belong….

One more thing….this time it is about Cruz….I heard him talk and say that some were trying to write the 2nd amendment out of the Constitution…..cute campaign rhetoric but no one can write anything out of the Constitution…..any changes must go through the amendment process and then the ratification process……and this from a Senator that is always using the Constitution as a political prop….another pathetic piece of political crap!  My granddaughter knows more about the Constitution than these fools we elect……she has my vote.

Please do not hold this against me…..there is enough lying in politics and I think that they need correcting wherever I see them……

US Hawks Ignore Top Israeli Official on Iran

The Hawks in the GOP for the 2016 election are still thumping their chest about how they will go about killing the Iran nuke deal…..regardless of what anyone says are the benefits…they are opposed….well it does make good political fodder for their campaigns….but is any of it really true….I mean all the visuals they give the voting public?

Neoconservatives and other right-wing pro-Israel hawks have ignored the fact that some (current) officials from Israel’s security establishment never viewed Iran—even armed with a nuclear bomb—as an existential threat. They have instead taken whatever Netanyahu says as articles of faith, faithfully repeating his talking points across any number of media and platforms. Of course, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.

Source: US Hawks Ignore Top Israeli Official on Iran « LobeLog

These politicians are dangerous and will lead the US into a situation that will be our eventual downfall (my personal opinion)……..
