Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has announced that excavation work for Trump’s Triumphal Arc at Memorial Circle in Washington will begin over the next two weeks, despite ongoing litigation against the project and criticism that it will block views of other memorials.
The arch is one of several projects Trump has spearheaded to remake the nation’s capital in his own image. It is also the latest to be rapidly advanced in the face of opposition and without securing final approval. At 250 feet tall and 166 feet wide, the arch would stand in Memorial Circle and be more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial, across the Potomac River at the opposite end of Arlington Memorial Bridge.

On Wednesday he mused on Truth Social about rechristening the Strait of Hormuz as “TRUMP STRAIT,” claiming the US now effectively controls the passage and suggesting the new name would make the strait “hotter” than ever, the Hill reports. Last month, he also said he planned to declare the waterway a US territory, without explaining how.
The strait, bordered by Iran and Oman, carries about a fifth of global oil and gas shipments. The US naval blockade amid the six-month-old war with Iran has disrupted traffic and driven up energy prices. Trump this week touted America’s “almost total control” of the route and Iran’s “totally collapsing” economy, and wondered when Iranians would “rise up and fight.” Despite Trump’s claim of control over the strait, traffic remains well below prewar levels, and transits dropped further this week amid renewed military strikes, CNBC reports.

Trump sharpened those remarks later Wednesday when Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked whether he would send the CIA to arm Iranians if he wants them to “rise up and fight.”
“I’d love to tell you that, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to say,” Trump responded from the Oval Office.
Trump said he understood why Iranians have not risen in larger numbers, arguing that protesters face deadly repression from the government.

Markwayne Mullin said he’s looking to ban heavily pregnant women from visiting the U.S., comparing them to disease carriers.
During a Fox News appearance discussing birthright citizenship, the Secretary of Homeland Security said that heavily pregnant women would be banned from entering the U.S. “We’re looking at how we can stop some of this birthright citizenship by saying ‘Hey, maybe you shouldn’t come to this country if you’re late in your third term,'” said Mullin.
He said there was a precedent for this because the U.S. doesn’t allow “sick individuals to come here if they are coming from an area that could spread a disease.” The comment was quickly shared online, with users ridiculing the secretary.
