Actually I started blogging on another platform December of 2006….so really I have blogging for damn near 18 years.
 
Now on to more stuff!

This may be a rehash of what we already know but I do not think it is too much to remind people what is i8n store for this country with the election of 2024…..

Two Republican officials in Arizona got charged for delaying approval of 2022 election results – and GOP state lawmakers vowed to retaliate against the Democratic attorney general who filed the charges.

Rudy Giuliani faces millions in damages for defaming two Georgia election workers in 2020 – and continued to defame them outside the courtroom.

Donald Trump himself is on trial in four jurisdictions, in part because of election subversion – and and gives public speeches on how he intends to take down his political enemies if he wins again.

Such is the dichotomy of American democracy at this moment: attempts to hold election deniers accountable for their actions are met with doubling down and more intense election denial.

Ahead of the 2020 elections, Trump foreshadowed his plan to claim the election was stolen if he lost, which his supporters often explained away as campaign trail bluster. But he and his followers took their election lies farther than many feared, culminating in an attack on the US Capitol. Biden only made it to the White House because of a handful of steadfast Republicans in key states who refused to bow to Trump’s attempts to overthrow Biden’s victory in the vote.

These days, rather than subsiding after a series of bruising losses, adherence to election denialism is now a major flank of the mainstream Republican party. Trump’s most ardent supporters, some of whom now hold public office, have even sought to reclaim the term: they agree they are in fact election deniers, and proud of it. Their continued attempts to undermine elections since, combined with vulnerabilities that haven’t been addressed, mean the US could be in for even worse this time around.

That is, if Trump loses. If he wins, he’s vowed to use the Department of Justice to pursue vengeance against those who tried to hold him accountable. He’s called his political opponents “vermin”, using the language of authoritarian dictators.

Now a little something to help preserve our fragile democracy….

The first step to defending our democracy is learning to differentiate genuine political disagreement from authoritarian behaviors designed to consolidate power and undermine majority rule. Healthy democracy has room for disputes — even ugly, angry fights — on policy, rhetoric, values, politics, candidates, and priorities. But it has no room for authoritarianism.

Only by separating democracy vs. authoritarianism from left vs. right, from progressive vs. conservative, can we learn to police the boundaries of healthy democracy in our own politics, communities, and conversations.

To Save Democracy

It is election time and both sides seem to think that they are the savior of our beloved Constitution…..both are silly in my world….but I read a blog post the other day that I feel needs to be shared.

What Of Democracy?

These days with an election looming and all the talk about whether or not our democracy is at stake I thought I would take a look at the ‘cradle of democracy’….Greece.

Since it is a Sunday and a good day for me to drop some history and even maybe someone will learn something…..

Remember Socrates?

You know the philosopher that taught Aristotle but what did he think of the idea of ‘democracy’?

Democracy is a form of government in which power is placed in the hands of the people. This can take two main shapes: direct democracy (citizens make decisions themselves) or representative democracy (elected officials make decisions on behalf of the citizens). Most modern democracies operate with some form of representative democracy — such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Ancient Greece, however, had a direct democracy; citizens had a direct and active role in the government, but this was easier back then than today because Greek city-states made the population smaller, and the definition of ‘citizen’ was more exclusive.

Socrates was a philosopher from Athens in the fifth century BCE, and he has gone on to be one of the most well-known thinkers of his time. Although he didn’t leave behind any written works of his own, his students kept his legacy alive, and his influence reverberates today. He’s most known for his teaching style — known today as the Socratic Method — wherein a question-and-answer discussion setting is cultivated to stimulate critical thinking. Socrates believed one should be skeptical of everything, and he practiced what he preached regarding democracy. Socrates was an outspoken critic of the Athenian government. Two of his biggest criticisms of democracy concerned the majority rule’s lack of knowledge and the potential for a demagogue.

Looks like one of Socrates criticisms came true and may come true again….A demagogue is a type of political leader who relies on prejudices, false promises, and charisma to manipulate voters into choosing them.

Was Socrates correct in his criticism?

I think he was pretty spot on and sharp even back then.

Democracy For All

There is a subjective issue.

Democracy means many things to many people….but for this post I will focus on returning the country into the hands of the voter and take the reins of government out of the hands of those high dollar donors.

This is about that infamous ruling by the Roberts court, Citizen United.

To end an era in which wealthy corporations have been given free rein to spend nearly unlimited money on political campaigns, Democrats in the U.S. House on Thursday proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the hugely consequential Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision by U.S. Supreme Court, saying the ruling “has dangerously eroded” the government’s ability to serve the public interest.

Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), and Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) led dozens of co-sponsors in introducing the Democracy for All Amendment two days before the 13th anniversary of the Citizens United decision, in which the court struck down a ban on corporate independent expenditures.

According to Schiff, the constitutional amendment—which the congressman first proposed in 2013—would:

  • Make clear the Constitution does not restrict the ability of Congress or the states to propose reasonable, viewpoint-neutral limitations on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections;
  • Distinguish between natural persons and corporations or other artificial entities, including by prohibiting the latter from spending unlimited amounts of money to influence elections;
  • Allow states to enact public campaign financing systems, which can restrict the influence of corporate or private wealth; and
  • Take further steps to protect the freedom of the press in the case of future campaign finance-related legislation.

“It would affirm the right of the people to pass state and federal laws by restoring Congress’ and the states’ authority to place [limits] on political spending,” said the group.

In addition to overturning Citizens United, the Democrats aim to overturn the “fundamental flaws” and legal precedents that underpinned the court’s reasoning in 2010 and in “an entire line of cases dating back to the 1976 Buckley v. Valeo decision, which prevented meaningful regulation of campaign expenditures by corporations and special interest groups.”

A fine idea that I support.   But I also know that this will go nowhere since the GOP controls the House and they are deep in the pockets of the abusers of campaign finance policies.

I would tell you to contact your representative but that would be counter-productive…..for no one in DC is listening to what you think or want.

Democracy Under Threat

I realize that there is lots of redundancy on this topic….but sadly it needs repeating over and over…..

I know….I know….everybody has an opinion these days about what is happening in this country…..some see it as a good thing to shake things up and others think we are witnessing the demise of our beloved country. I have made my thoughts on this issue quite clear.

I research and read a lot of opinions on this issue and I would like to share them with the reader and hopefully they will offer their thoughts on the direction of this country.

The first opinion is about the attacks on the democracy by political moves and games….

With all that is happening in the country and the world, it was perhaps all too easy to miss the ongoing battle for the future of US democracy. Republicans have opened up new racist offenses against voter rights and are once more pushing through corrupt gerrymandering to rig elections in their favor. They are also blocking the “Freedom to Vote Act” that would to curb systemic racist voter suppression through policies such as automatic registration at MVA, longer early voting, greater access to mail in ballots and fresh regulations for guaranteeing that people are not wrongly barred from voting and reducing partisan interference at the polls.

It is no exaggeration to say that the very survival of liberal democracy is under threat. This Republic strategy is just the latest example of a long history of repressing democracy. From its beginning, the promise of popular rule in the US has been undermined by the power of racism, capitalism, and patriarchy. Further, so much of the nation’s imperialism abroad and repression at home have been sanctioned by elected majorities.

I see that party politics is more important than the country and its future.

Second is an opinion on the country by General Michael V. Hayden is a retired four-star General in the United States Air Force; he served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2006-2009 and as Director of the National Security Agency from 1999-2005.

I was a Brigadier General 30 years ago, assigned in Europe as the head of intelligence. Most of the time I was looking at the Balkans because there was a war going on. Yugoslavia lasted for 72 years and then it was gone; it fell apart.

These were bitter rivalries. Many people were killed. There were multiple civil wars. It lasted 10 years; it’s hard to say, but we think 130,000 to 140,000 actually died. The hardest hit was Bosnia where maybe 100,000 people died, mostly Bosniaks (Muslims). Sarajevo in Bosnia had hosted the Olympics just a few years before.

I went to Sarajevo many times. It was a modern city. It was small and picturesque, on the banks of the Miljacka river.

The First World War began in Sarajevo. And in the 1990s, war returned. Sarajevo was a war zone. And I was in Bosnia, watching it happen. What was going on? Why were they doing this?

I could see artillery pointing down from the wooded hills and I witnessed the destructive product of their work in the streets below. I wondered what manner of man could pull the lanyard to fire on his former neighbors or shoot at unarmed civilians lined up for scarce water at a shuttered brewery.

What struck me most though, when I walked through the city, was not how much Sarajevans were different from the rest of us, but how much they weren’t. This had obviously been a cultured, tolerant, even vibrant city. The veneer of civilization, I sadly concluded then, was quite thin.

Now, 30 years later, I worry about the United States, not Sarajevo. The Cato Institute and Freedom House rank every country for personal, economic and human freedom. The worst is Syria; it’s in last place. There are others: North Korea, Eritrea, China, Turkmenistan, Iran, Cuba.

How about the United States? It’s not good.

My Worry for America

I am truly worried about the future…a future that my granddaughter will have to travel….from where I sit it does not bode well for the country without some corrections.

Democracy is slowly slipping away….but does anyone truly care?

There is no doubt that democracy in the United States is at serious risk. The year began with an attack on the Capitol designed to thwart the transition of power; instead of repudiating this violence, Republicans doubled down on the lie that Trump won the election and are working, right now, to rig the system in their favor. Neither Democrats nor the general public are doing much of anything to stop them.

From where I sit few could care less as long as their social media is intact and a feeder for their delusions.

Few realize how close we came to losing it all….

The first time many Americans learned that a large pro-Donald Trump protest in Washington was planned for January 6 was 18 days earlier when the 45th president tweeted about it—”Will be wild!”

But the wild things Trump and his shrinking, conspiracy-minded inner circle expected weren’t only his rabid supporters like the Proud Boys. The then-president knew his tweet would also be read by leftist counter-protesters, his increasing focus.

Team Trump—after months of violent street clashes between Trumpists and counter-protesters—obsessed on so-called “antifa” just before January 6. On January 5 alone, Trump tweeted for antifa to “stay out of Washington” and signed a memo for stepped-up monitoring of antifa, with a press release: “President Trump will not allow Antifa, or any terrorist organization, to destroy our great country.”

Backsliding Democracies

There was a time when the word ‘democracy’ meant something…..now it is a joke.

In recent years those so-called ‘democracies’ are today backsliding from the principles they once lived by……and the US is one of those democracies…..

The US has been experiencing a “visible deterioration” in its relationship with democracy since 2019, a think tank says. And the organization saw a “decline in the quality of freedom of association and assembly” during the protests after the killing of George Floyd last year. But “a historic turning point,” says the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, arrived “when former president Donald Trump questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election results in the United States.” For that, AFP reports, the US has earned a place for the first time on the global list of backsliding democracies.

“The United States is a high-performing democracy, and even improved its performance in indicators of impartial administration (corruption and predictable enforcement) in 2020,” said Alexander Hudson, a co-author of the “State of Democracy” report. “However, the declines in civil liberties and checks on government indicate that there are serious problems with the fundamentals of democracy.” International IDEA uses 50 years’ worth of indicators to categorize about 160 countries according to their type of rule: authoritarian, hybrid, or democratic—whether they’re solidly so or backsliding.

The group’s secretary general sees the US influencing other nations, and not in a good way. “The violent contestation of the 2020 election without any evidence of fraud has been replicated, in different ways,” Kevin Casas-Zamora said, “in places as diverse as Myanmar, Peru and Israel.” In fact, one-fourth of the world’s population now lives in a democratically backsliding nation, the report says. The group, which is based in Stockholm, noted the irony of it all, per the Washington Post. “The United States, the bastion of global democracy, fell victim to authoritarian tendencies itself,” the report said.

The beacon of justice and liberty is slowly dimming and will eventually go out.

You, the voter, can change that…..but will you?

That beacon that I mentioned needs to be saved….but sadly….not today.

Whether or not President Biden has any understanding that today’s geopolitical landscape is very different from the one which he experienced as the “end of history” was being celebrated in 1991, is an open question.

The upcoming global Democracy Summit was driven by the belief that America is still the only global power capable of dictating the terms of the world order.

But that hasn’t stopped Biden and his foreign policy advisors from rallying approximately the half of the world’s nations together for a summit which will be heralded as the historic meeting place of the freedom-loving liberal states. This means that over 100 countries are excluded from the dialogue and some of them believe that it was done because they claim the right to be able to determine their future without having it imposed by other powers. What arrogance on their part!

The “Democracy Gap”

First we need to define the term…..

A democratic deficit (or democracy deficit) occurs when ostensibly democratic organizations or institutions (particularly governments) fall short of fulfilling the principles of democracy in their practices or operation.

More simply….

There are certain points in history when the gap between governments and their people widen. Whether our democracy is receding depends on your point of view. In the midst of increased government surveillance and economic meltdown, there are grass roots citizens’ movements which are reseeding democracy. But if we only measure democracy by the state of our government, then one could easily argue that government of, by, and for the people has taken some giant leaps backwards; from ‘droning’ out democracy, to the overt Patriot Act that we inflicted upon ourselves. Willingly trading “security” for personal freedoms seems counter to what every patriot has stood or died for.

Ralph Nader (not a big fan of him) wrote an op-ed about the ‘gap’ and ‘lag time’…..

Lag time is another phrase for the “democracy gap.” It is the space between what most of the people want and need, and what those same passive people suffer and tolerate.

Kicking life-saving solutions endlessly down the road is the mark of the brutish power of the corporations over the innocents.

Fifty years ago, medical research warned about the overuse of antibiotics creating mutations of resistant bacterium, making these drugs less effective. Dr. Sidney Wolfe warned about this criminal negligence again and again, along with other colleagues. But the drug companies kept over-promoting to get physicians to over-prescribe. Today, antibiotic resistance takes over 100,000 lives a year just in the U.S. Some bacterium are mutating beyond the ability of medical science to catch up with new more powerful antibiotics to curb new antibiotic resistance bacterium.

For me this ‘lag time’ is yet another symptom of the danger of Centrists…..looking for short term gains and ignoring the long game that would provide more security for the people of this nation.

WE are suffering from society disintegration at this time…..

Social disintegration is the tendency for society to decline or disintegrate over time, perhaps due to the lapse or breakdown of traditional social support systems. In this context, “society” refers to the social orderwhich maintains a society, rather than the political order that defines its boundaries. Society in the sociological sense is not the same as a country.

I do not believe ‘centrism’ is the answer at all….just a cop-out and bowing to the cash from lobbyists….centrism is causing the “gap” and the “disintegration”….if this does not change the nation is looking at end times.

Is American Democracy A Mirage?

I have as well as others have been concerned about the rhetoric and later the actions of some politicians to curb the democratic process in this country.

For me this disturbing trend began with the demonization of minorities by Reagan in 1980….and slowly it became the agenda for the Right…..then in 2010 the obstructionism came into the chambers of Congress….and as they say that brings us to today……

For instance…he GOP is attacking the way that votes are counted as well as the access to voting…..

The GOP are not a political party as we have known such for most of our history. They are closer to a camp of oligarchic terrorists, employing techniques used by Fascists and other authoritarian regimes, and excoriated in 1984, to attempt a slow-moving coup, , whose aim is the destruction of voting rights, constitutional democracy, and the creation of a one-party state.

But has this really come to fruition?

Is American democracy just a mirage?

It is no longer an unknown fact or a view propounded by a handful of radical historians and political scientists: the American political system has such severe structural flaws that it is potentially antithetical to democracy and surely detrimental to the promotion of the common good.

Consider the following stark realizations about the condition of American democracy as evidence of the changing times:

The United States has been rated for a number of consecutive years by the Economist Intelligence Union as a “flawed democracy.”  

Scores of highly respected mainstream scholars have analyzed massive amounts of data showing that public opinion counts very little in US policymaking (see, for example, Larry Bartels, Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age; Princeton University Press, 2nd ed., 2016) to conclude that the American political system works essentially in a manner that actually subverts the will of the common people. 

Others, like Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, have argued that, because of rules set in the political system, the American economy is rigged to favor the rich, a view that is obviously wholeheartedly endorsed by Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow from Asia Research Institute, at the National University of Singapore, when he declares that the US functions like a democracy but is actually a plutocracy.

The American democratic process is being assaulted on all sides by the states….and make no mistake it is an assault.

If we pretend that the balance will return as well as the democratic process is nothing more than a pipe dream…..the people need to take back the process.

If we do not fight back then our very nation is in jeopardy…..

There is an Orwellian thought that I like….“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” 

Or maybe it should be this…..

“The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.”
 
So is American democracy just a mirage?

Newly leaked video footage of a recent event hosted by the right-wing group Patriot Voices shows Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas openly admitting that his party wants “18 more months of chaos and the inability to get stuff done” as President Joe Biden, a bipartisan group of senators, and congressional Democrats work to pass climate and infrastructure legislation.

“Honestly, right now, for the next 18 months, our job is to do everything we can to slow all of that down to get to December of 2022,” Roy says in the clip, referring to the month after that year’s midterm elections. Republicans need to flip just a handful of seats to take back the House and Senate.

“I don’t vote for anything in the House of Representatives right now,” Roy says in response to an audience member’s question about the sweeping infrastructure and safety-net package that Democrats are planning to pass unilaterally alongside a White House-backed bipartisan deal.

Is The Democratic Process Dead?

The basic right within this democratic process is the right to vote….and there seems to be an all out assault on that right.

A majority of states have tried to enact statues that would seriously limit the access to a voting location….even to make it illegal to give water to those standing in the long lines to vote….

So my thought is that this is an assault on the very foundation of this country….

How did it come to this?

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in April 2021 indicates that a majority of Republicans feel that the presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. On January 6, when Congress convened to count and certify the electoral votes, 147 Republican members of the House of Representative voted against certification even after a mob had taken over the U.S. Capitol. This is unprecedented. Never before has a major political party rejected the results of a presidential election. What caused this phenomenon? When and how did forces come together resulting in an attack on democracy by a major political party?

American history is replete with presidential elections that could have been justifiably challenged. Many times results have been less than clear-cut and controversial. Before the 12th Amendment each elector would cast two votes. The candidate with the most votes became president and the runner-up vice-president. In the 1800 election, Jefferson and Burr, the Democratic Republicans, tied for first. It was left to the House of Representatives controlled by the Federalists to decide whether Jefferson or Burr would be president. They chose Jefferson, who was then accepted by all sides as our third president. Today it would be inconceivable for a Republican Congress to decide which Democrat is elected president. But that happened in 1800 as the Federalists accepted the Electoral College system as prescribed by the Founding Fathers.

All this assault brings into question whether the foundational right of this country is in jeopardy….

Do not overlook the process known as gerrymandering…..which will begin soon….that is when politicians pick their voters and not the reverse.

Democracy may well be dead!

n the wake of the bloody insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, one question lingered along with the stench of tear gas and bear spray — was that abomination a one-off, or was it in fact the start of something new, something far more ominous? In the aftermath of the January 6 attack I gave my own guess in an article called “Trump’s Storm Troopers: First Blood.” “Stay tuned,” I advised. “This is just the beginning.” 

Now, five months out, we can see the larger pattern that is forming. The United States is being threatened from within as it has not been since the Civil War. We are once again becoming a nation divided, with family members pitted against each in bitter recrimination. The new Mason-Dixon Line can be almost anything — a MAGA hat, a Black Lives Matter sign, an absentee ballot. Suspicions over COVID-19, masking, and vaccinations simply followed the fault lines already laid bare by the last election, to the point where the pandemic itself became political. The country now seems in gridlock, with a third of the population determined to continue fighting the last election. 

Democracy Is Dead! Long Live Democracy!

You have taken your democratic rights for granted…..and now  you are witnessing the slow process of the loss of those rights.

This sounds like a con job as usual….it will be nothing more than rhetoric from the Cold War….and will not really be about ‘democracy’ at all…..

Reliable reports continue to circulate that President Biden intends to call for a “summit of democracies” to convene this summer, although concerns that such a large gathering might become a super-spreader of the coronavirus may delay those plans. The implicit goal is to create a political, diplomatic (and eventually a military) bloc of democratic countries to contain the power and influence of the two leading authoritarian states, Russia and China, and to counter the supposedly surging appeal of authoritarianism globally. It is a concept that is deeply flawed both conceptually and in terms of execution. Indeed, the pursuit of this pernicious chimera has the potential to poison America’s already fragile relations with several important countries and to heighten risks to the security and well-being of the American people.

Biden and key advisers highlighted their wish to create a league of democracies (under Washington’s benevolent leadership, of course) even before the administration took office. Biden himself gave the proposal considerable prominence during the 2020 presidential election campaign. He and other officials also have exhorted Washington’s existing democratic alliance partners to create a common front against both Moscow and Beijing.

In remarks delivered on December 28, the president-elect stated that “as we compete with China and hold China’s government accountable for its abuses on trade, technology, human rights, and other fronts, our position will be much stronger when we build coalitions of like-minded partners and allies to make common cause with us in defense of our shared interests and values.” Biden added that “on any issue that matters to the U.S.-China relationship,… we [the United States] “are stronger and more effective when we are flanked by nations that share our vision for the future of our world.”

The Fraudulent ‘League of Democracies’ Scheme

This is a waste of time and energy……for the US turns a blind eye to nations that pretend to be a democracy while committing heinous crimes against people.

US needs to cease being a huge hypocrite on the world stage…..how can we truly be a world leader when the word ‘democracy’ means NOTHING to us?

This is a pathetic attempt to bolster the station of the M-IC…..not about the people of any given country.

It is about profit over people…..the usual crap we pretend is democracy.
