IST Saturday News Dump–26Sep26

Another fine week and about the best thing that I can say is September is almost over….but that is just me….

Question of the week–Why would anyone want to eat the world’s hottest pepper?

Local–It seems that the idiotic sport of Banana Ball is coming to the Coast….I would explain it it but the thought of it makes me ill….if you want to know then I suggest Google.

WE are fortunate to go at least for awhile some 60s at night….but it shall not last ling I fear.

The Coast is preparing for the world’s biggest block party, of so it is billed, Cruisin’ The Coast will begin next weekend and last for a week….there will be events in every major city on the Coast and cover three counties….I will be safe at home for the traffic is horrendous.

Personal–Today is a bit of an off day the chemo is still kicking my old white ass.\

Other than that the iks not much to report about me and my life.

Once again I shall begin with health news….

Some new research for people with massive paralysis….

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) carry a lot of hope for people with certain disabilities, potentially reading the brain activity of people unable to speak and turning it into words. While this technology gets the headlines, BCIs that can convey facial expressions and hand gestures have also been produced, but it is only now that one has been demonstrated to do both at the same time.

“Conversation is about much more than the words being spoken. It’s a multilayered, dynamic process involving the whole motor cortex,” said Professor Edward Chang, M.D. of the University of California, San Francisco in a statement. “This proof-of-concept shows us it’s possible for a BCI to restore some of this freedom and flexibility.”

Chang and colleagues trained decoders to identify the brain activity associated with three amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients’ speech and gestures and had online avatars speak and move as the patients were trying to. Each patient used a vocabulary of 10 words and 10 gestures, giving 100 ways they could be combined.

This could go a long way for some normalcy in their lives.

If you have ever had a broken bone then you know what a pain in the ass it can be…..

More than 10 years ago, Håkan Engqvist and Philip Procter began developing a bone glue designed to help repair fractures. Now, the glue has been used on a patient in England for the first time. In early August this year, the bone glue was used on a patient during knee surgery in England. The patient is the first participant in a clinical study evaluating the glue’s effectiveness in treating fractures near joints.

“It’s really exciting to see things moving forward and to reach the stage where there is an actual product in the clinical trial phase,” says Engqvist, professor of applied materials science at the Department of Materials Science.

Today, development of the bone glue is being driven by the Irish company Biomimetic Innovations Ltd., but the original version was created by Engqvist and his colleagues Procter and Gerard Insley in the lab at the Ångström Laboratory. Ten years ago, after securing funding, they began experimenting to achieve the right composition.

Brain research…..

Your brain may be more of a duet than a solo act. A new study in Nature Neuroscience suggests that the human brain is essentially two ancient nervous systems that evolved separately but now function as one tightly linked organ, reports the Telegraph. By tracking the earliest stages of brain formation in mouse embryos, the team found that the front (forebrain and midbrain, which handle thinking and decision-making) and the back (hindbrain or brain stem, which manages breathing, heartbeat, sleep, and swallowing) arise from entirely different progenitor cells that never overlap.

“Our research suggests that evolution took two existing neural systems and pushed them together spatially,” says Stanford researcher Kyle Loh in a university release. “Having the brain as one organ would probably be more efficient, but we rely on this primordial way to make the brain as two separate pieces.” The work helps explain why scientists had long struggled to grow hindbrain cells in the lab, a hurdle in studying conditions like spinal muscular atrophy and ALS that damage brain-stem neurons. The findings will enable them to do so, says Loh, opening a path to better disease models and potential drug discovery. The pattern also shows up in simple sea creatures, suggesting this two-system setup has been around for about 500 million years.

What happened to those MAGA twats?

This is about MAHA study that is trying to reband nicotine….

An ironic development emerging alongside the “Make America Healthy Again” movement is the portrayal of nicotine as a wellness and performance-enhancing product. Across social media, podcasts, wellness communities and tech startups, prominent wellness personalities and other influencers are portraying nicotine as a misunderstood compound whose potential benefits have been overshadowed by its negative association with cigarette smoking.

s a result, nicotine is being repositioned from an addictive substance linked to tobacco use to a natural product that can be used for everything from improving focus to protecting against cognitive decline. This trend includes use of nicotine alone in noncombustible products such as nicotine pouches, or in combination with caffeine and nootropics, which are substances marketed to enhance cognition.

Now for the Med diet….we are told to eat more fish….matters not just more fish….

From a nutritional standpoint, seafood is a pretty safe bet: It’s packed with protein and good-for-you monounsaturated fats. Unfortunately, though, some types of also contain mercury, which can affect a fetus or child’s neurological development, says Mira Ilic, R.D., a nutritionist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Since the contaminant stays in your body for more than a year, it’s crucial that you avoid ingesting it even if there’s just a chance you could become a mom soon. All fish contain some mercury, but here are five types you should definitely steer clear of (along with five better alternatives).

As someone who fights 2 cancers it is always good to see the research is finding new ways of detecting and treating the different cancers….

Pancreatic cancer is one of the hardest cancers to treat because it is often discovered only after it has spread.

Early disease may cause few or no clear symptoms, and the pancreas sits deep inside the abdomen, making small tumors difficult to detect. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, or PDAC, is the most common form of the disease.

Scientists from the Sloan Kettering Institute at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and IRB Barcelona have now uncovered new details about the earliest stages of pancreatic cancer.

The research was published in Science. The findings may eventually help scientists develop better ways to detect or stop the disease before it becomes advanced.

A gene called KRAS plays a major role in pancreatic cancer. KRAS normally helps control cell growth, but mutations can leave its growth signal permanently switched on. However, having a KRAS mutation does not automatically mean that a normal pancreatic cell will become cancerous.

Hopefully this will benefit the detection of pancreatic cancer, as promised….

This is for those guys that have a fixation on the size of their penis….

The internet has now reached the point where men are hanging weighted shopping bags from their penises in hopes of gaining an inch. The downside is that you can also end up with pain, scar tissue, erectile dysfunction, or a permanently altered erection angle. That is a wild amount of risk for one inch.

Clavicular, the 20-year-old looksmaxxing influencer whose real name is Braden Peters, described the method on an upcoming episode of Howie Mandel’s podcast, Howie Mandel Does Stuff. He was talking about “printmaxxing,” or trying to make the outline of your penis more visible through clothing, when the conversation moved to pumping, stretching, and something called the “shopping bag hang.”

This Penis-Enlargement Trend Involves Shopping Bags, Weights, and a Lot of Pain

Seriously?  This vanity bullshit is getting out of hand.

That does it for this Saturday…..enjoy your day and as always…..Be Well and Be Safe….
