Closing Thought–26Jul17

In The Land Of “True Believers”!

I have a couple of friends that are supporters of Trump…they are die hard believers.

I ask why and usually get the same answer ….”he has done what he promised on the campaign trail”….

Then I ask what exactly has he done?

The first reaction is….”he beat Clinton”……(really?  A good sled dog would have beaten Clinton)…..

So I got to wondering just what makes one a Trump “true believer”…..and Salon provided me with an answer so I did not have to give myself a migraine trying to understand…..

When Donald Trump gave the commencement address at Liberty University this spring, he told the graduates that “America has always been the land of dreams because America is a nation of true believers.” Trump argued that, in America, “we don’t worship government; we worship God.”

After reading the article I still do not completely understand the blind obedience of his supporters.

Maybe if we can understand why the country is so divided……

In research that should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the current political climate in the US, a new study discovered that supporters of either candidate in the last Presidential election were more likely to accept new data if it agreed with their desired outcome.

They recruited more than 800 individuals and had each indicate who they wanted to see win the 2016 Presidential election, as well as who they believed would win. Afterwards, each participant was presented with new information that was either consistent or inconsistent with their desired outcome, and again asked which candidate they believed would ultimately win the election. What they found, the authors explained, is that the participants were more likely to update their predictions if the information was consistent with their desired outcome, and were less likely to change their beliefs if the data was inconsistent with their preferred result.

It is all so confusing…..

Could it be as simple as American politics is just screwed up?

Off I go……a cold beer and some cheese dip awaits…..have a day and please come back tomorrow… well, be safe…..chuq

  1. Like you, whenever possible I have been trying to understand this blind obedience to Trump and questioning those misguided souls I encounter in my travels. Of recent note.. this new Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci.. I mean, this guy is loving Trump, worships Trump; on any good day I have NEVER felt that way toward any politician.. and that includes Lincoln and Washington. John Dean of Watergate fame wrote his best selling book, Blind Ambition, about Watergate. I think I should write one called, “Blind Obsession”.

  2. I spoke with a “true believer” this weekend and she just can’t understand why everyone can’t see that Trump is just trying to do good for the Country. I didn’t pursue, she can’t recognize self serving. ~~dru~~

    1. Everyone is “just trying to do good for the country”.. even Clinton. The real reason is more like, “I like HIS way of doing good for the country”. Well, I don’t. 🙂 You are correct, dru… they know not what the believe.

  3. Everyone is “just trying to do good for the country”.. even Clinton would be like that. That’s no reason. The reason is more like.. “I like his way of doing good for the country”. Doesn’t mean his way is the right way. You are correct, dru.

  4. “Could it be as simple as American politics is just screwed up?” LOL! Why, of course it can!

What needs to be remembered is, anyone who can fully buy into the whole God deal, as presented by the formal religions in our culture, is, by doing so, self-programmed to believe damn near anything they are told, whether by a sage or a fool, simply because they’ve been taught to accept certain things as true…. none of which are actually anywhere NEAR the truth. But, this dependence on ‘belief’ rather than learning for oneself puts each and every one of them at the mercy of anyone with a sharp tongue, and no morals. Hence, the American game o thrones….

Trump merely reflects the depth of ignorance now embedded in human culture, and the simple fact of the human bell curve, in which the number of the “AVERAGE” humans comprising the curve are far too ignorant to even be considered sane…. They’re merely programmed robots, manipulable by anyone with the wit, and the lack of morality to do so….

    gigoid, the dubious

  5. Politics is politics and people are bound to believe in something that they can see. I for one believe that Trump could be doing a lot better than what he is doing, and if our nation is going to support him, then we ought to be praying for him!
