Finally Saturday has arrived and I can be puck-ish (really…I can be puck-ish)…..I can push back from the news and post on some cool stuff…..
There is no mistake….I like my cup of Joe….but I recall a couple of years ago when there was a thing that pregnant women should just say no to Starbucks……but like most of these “warnings” there is more…..
Pregnant women who can’t resist a single morning cup of joe don’t have to worry about their caffeine habit when it comes to their child’s future smarts, per a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio found that moderate caffeine consumption during pregnancy wasn’t linked to lower IQ scores or increased behavioral problems in young children, Medical Daily reports. “We consider our results to be reassuring for pregnant women who consume moderate amounts of caffeine, or the equivalent to one or two cups of coffee per day,” study co-author Sarah Keim says in a press release. The study looked at a caffeine marker called paraxanthine—one of the compounds caffeine breaks down into—in 2,197 women at two different points during their pregnancies, then compared those levels to the child’s IQ scores and behavioral assessments at ages 4 and 7.
“We did not find evidence of an adverse association of maternal pregnancy caffeine consumption with child cognition or behavior [at those ages],” study co-author Mark Klebanoff adds. Scientists pulled samples for the study from those collected between 1959 and 1974, when drinking coffee while pregnant wasn’t frowned upon as much, per Live Science. The study’s results are in line with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ findings that moderate caffeine consumption (less than 200mg, or one to two cups of joe per day) is OK for pregnant women, though it points out that the effects of higher amounts of caffeine are still inconclusive…
Have some coffee future Moms and relax……
The news these days is all about healthy eating, right? What can be more healthy than a banana? But the days of eating a banana may be limited…….
If you like bananas, it’s time to start savoring them while you still can. A deadly fungus that’s been killing the plant since the 1960s has jumped continents, moving from where it ravaged crops for decades in Southeast Asia to parts of South Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and Africa—and that’s just since 2013, reports Quartz. The so-called “Panama” disease is spreading thanks to a single clone of the Fusarium fungus, also called Tropical Race 4, scientists report in the journal PLOS Pathogens. Worse still, one of the world’s most popular bananas, the Cavendish, is particularly susceptible to this strain. The soil-borne fungus travels up the plant’s roots, ultimately killing the plant and infesting entire banana plots, which are then contaminated for years.
Entire swaths of banana plantations in Australia, China, the Philippines, Jordan, Mozambique, Pakistan, and beyond have been infested in the past two years, putting many farmers and families out of business and cutting them off from a major food source, reports PhysOrg. Right now the only way to fight the disease is through strict quarantine, so researchers are trying to spread the word about effective measures in the hopes of getting a step ahead of the fast-spreading fungus before it hits Latin America, where most of the world’s bananas are grown. Once it lands there, notes Quartz, “the days of the iconic yellow fruit are numbered.
Okay…that officially sucks! No bananas…..no banana splits!
Like I said….that just sucks!
“per a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology …”

I love my three cups each morning too
Kinda like the oil people and their studies on the environment, huh?
How any mother who can drink tea or coffee whilst pregnant is beyond me……
The smell of it sent me reeling…..
Delicate I was…..horrid being pregnant…..
I had heard about the banana plague….
Enjoy your weekend!
Sorry about the following; too much sleep, I think….
It sucks! But, does it swallow?
As I said apologies for my morning chutzpah….
gigoid, the dubious
and, now you know more about why….
😈
Not that I’m a “caffeine = Satan” person, but I’d be VERY wary of any non-negative studies on caffeine. Most are just bought & paid for by the caffeine cartel. Coffee, pop, “energy” drinks are huge business with lots of clout and good PR spin-meisters. They don’t want to be the next tobacco, so they’re playing offence.
Others studies, like this one that seems to find minimal effects among moderate users, are usually blown way out of proportion in the media. A study that finds “Three cups of coffee a week won’t kill you before age 35.” gets turned into “Drink 57 Red Bullshits a day and your dick will grow larger.”
” We did not find evidence of an adverse association of maternal pregnancy caffeine consumption with child cognition or behavior….. then compared those levels to the child’s IQ scores and behavioral assessments at ages 4 and 7….Scientists pulled samples for the study from those collected between 1959 and 1974…”
Ah, there’s the built-in problem with the study right there!
The average kid born between 1959-74 probably had a higher IQ at age 4 & 7 than most fully grown adults do today. This is a society of iDiots who can’t concentrate on anything for longer than a fucking goldfish can! Most young people will be lucky to break into the IQ double digits during their lifetime. So, even if the brains of the kids who mamas drank coffee were half-fried, they’d still be on-par with the kids of today’s non-caffeinated moms.
As for behaviour? Kids in those days REALLY behaved themselves….OR ELSE!!! Today’s kids are spoiled, undisciplined, little fuckers who, on a good day, spend half their time robbing, looting and beating up homeless drunks on the street. And they spend the rest of the time posting & watching videos of it all on the Internet.
I suspect there is a safe dose of caffeine, but I also suspect there’s a ceiling you (especially pregnant moms & kids) should never go above. And I bet the effects of entering that red zone, even by a few mg, are very significant for said groups. But in today’s world full ultra-caffeinated people who think over-consumption is a Constitutional Right, I doubt too many people are actually consuming safe doses. It’s kind of like the drunk claiming “I only had a couple of drinks”.
I think you just hate Starbucks….LOL
While I stand firmly on my above comments about the study’s inherent weakness…
I really DO hate Starbucks!
They’ve been in my part of Canuckistan for just a few years. However, even in my podunk one-horse town, I can already stand in front of a Starbucks and see another Starbucks! But Canada already had a Tim Horton’s (a massive Canadian coffee & doughnut chain named after a hockey player, of course) on every other corner. So, having that many Starbucks carries even more weight. Virtually every cup of coffee sold in this country is sold (or supplied) by these 2 companies. So, whenever I see them, I see the corpses of the smaller, independent, retailers that used to dominate the coffee scene. Just the fact Starbucks is a mammoth corporation with a near monopoly is more than enough for me. But I got other reasons.
I also really hate the smarmy better-than-thou attitude they and/or their customers have. They are “above” going to Tim Horton’s and are so eager to prove it, they’re willing to get even fatter & broker by paying $10 for a milky, sugary, coffee. Tim Horton’s is just too “Minor League” (aka Canadian) for them. Starbucks is the (non-fossil) fuel of choice for the Global American Empire…and those eager to embrace it. In a way, Starbucks is a super-upscaled version of what McDonald’s was here in the 70’s. It’s kind of like the folks in Austria who threw flowers and cheered the German army as it rolled across the border and down every street.
When I was born, this nation was still a civilized British colony full of tea drinkers. Now we’re an insignificant cog in the highly caffeinated US Empire. We now seem eager to embrace all your “best” (note: with sarcasm) qualities.
And, yes, I also hate all those other peddlers of caffeine too. Especially those over-hyped
speedball“energy” drinks. I have plenty of hate to go round! 🙂I cannot argue…I also hate Starbcuks….I like coffee and I do not know what they serve but to me it is not coffee…..chuq
What is considered a miracle food today may kill you tomorrow. It does suck about bananas. So delicious and nutritious. I’d be surprised if someone wasn’t tbinking of a way to GMO them as we type this. Wouldn’t eat them that way though.
I will miss my splits….so sad
RIP splits 🙁
