Yummy! We are all a foodie deep down….we like what we like and no amount of ‘research’ can change our eating habits, right?
Well sports fans….you really need to read this article…bon apatite!
The same plastic chemicals in yoga mats and shoes are found in nearly 500 foods | GlobalPost.
Well, there goes lunch!
I am not sure why is matters if a chemical that is in my food is also in my yoga mat. It makes for salacious press, but isn’t the real issue whether the chemical has been tested for safety for use in food and whether we believe in the effectiveness of the testing.
Keep in mind that plastic is a product of petroleum……would it contain clogging properties, as in arteries?
Many foods contain contain trace amounts of petroleum products. I am not saying this is safe – I have no idea. But I do think the standard of safety should be government testing for toxicity and exposure, not that it happens to be in some other non food product
This is why I grow my own veggies……just to be safe…
Looks like inspections are getting a slow down…….http://www.salon.com/2014/02/28/feces_in_your_burger_the_dangerous_price_of_cutting_back_on_meat_inspectors_partner/
Just to sound like a superior Canadian for a moment… but the American people’s constant desire to have less government and less taxes, but never see a reduction in services….. interesting to say the least.
But on this specific point – and again, I have no idea if this yoga mat additive is dangerous- chemical safety testing and food safety inspection are completely different things. With chemicals, before a chemical can be used or put to any new used, it undergoes a toxicological assessment to ensure it is safe for that use. In Canada at least, the funding for this work has increased over the past decade or so; by most measures foods are becoming much safer. It is a messy process because as you put more money into it, you discover risks that are small but where previously unknown, So when you find a really low level toxin with a long term effect it seems really scary – in reality it was always there, science had just, previously, lacked the ability to detect and understand it. All that to say, we understand far more about chemicals than we did 10 and 20 years ago and things are actually becoming safer.
Food inspection is very different. It involved inspectors going to cars, restaurant, grocery stores to investigate hygiene. It is very labour intensive and expensive and is being cut everywhere. From what I have read, I really believe this is causing a significant source of risk to our food system (but out has nothing to do with the chemicals in our food); it has to do with the hygienic conditions in which they are prepared
We Americans are a strange lot, especially when it comes to political BS……
