From the VOMITORIUM
Just thought I would let my readers know that this post was inspired by a comment to Quin at Quintessential Havoc (GO! Blogroll will take you to his site…thoughtful and insightful) about the religious and political theater developing over the mosque in NYC.
In case you were wondering….a VOMITORIUM is where people go to pass on political regurgitation…..and this subject is all about such an occurrence…..
Second, I am by NO means condoning nor condemning the idea of a Islamic Center near Ground Zero…..what I will speak about is the whole affair through the lens of the US Constitution…..
Holy Crap! Did you hear what the President had to say about the building of the center near ground zero?
“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” Mr. Obama told an intently listening crowd gathered at the White House Friday evening to observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”
And after he said that…the firestorm of the fanatical Right began firing the shots at what the Prez had to say….it was going to be inevitable…..
Gingrich, a Republican and former House speaker, also condemned the president’s comments.
“There is nothing surprising in the president’s continued pandering to radical Islam,” Gingrich said. “What he said last night is untrue and inaccurate. The fact is this is not about religious liberty.”
Gingrich said that the proposed mosque and community center would be a symbol of Muslim “triumphalism” and that building it near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust museum.”
You know, unless as an outsider I’ve simply missed out on a whole load of this, I do wish the Right would just OCCASIONALLY get some of their facts 100% correct. I mean, as you know, there’s nothing left wing about me – maybe a bit moderate at times, occasionally even slightly liberal, but left wing? Nah! Grew out of that in college when I realised the numbers don’t add up. However…
What, where and who is the “radical” Islam that Gingrich is saying the Prez is pandering to? They want to build a f*cking church for chrissake! Damn! That’s radical as hell, isn’t it?
Damn Right this isn’t about religious freedom – it WAS, but Gingrich just changed that and made it about party politics and prejudice – assh*le!
The real insult, if there is one here, is some know nothing jumped up twerp of a US politician making comparisons between the Holocaust of WW2 and a couple of moderately tall buildings that were taken out with the loss of several thousand lives in downtown Manhattan, or wherever on American soil.
It was a cowardly and disgusting act – but THAT’S the point, though, isn’t it? To self centered, self important jerks like Gingrich, two or three thousand innocent people (or even a couple of unoccupied buildings come to that) on one day ON AMERICAN SOIL is the equivalent of, or far worse than, millions over a period of years herded into concentration camps, starved to death. worked to death, or used as medical guinea pigs – the “lucky” ones were just used for target practice.
What a motor-mouth! 👿
I use to think that Gingrich was at least semi-intelligent…..but that has been disproved. GOP is for smaller government with lots of local control and for private property rights…..well the mosque will be on private property and it should be left to the local government for a decision…..this is NOT a national issue.
Absolutely! But then almost all politicians are as selective about the application of their “principles” as they are when it comes to memory beyond election day!
My thought on this is….if you do NOT live in NYC or you do NOT have a family member that was injured or killed on 9/11…..then your opinion is of NO importance…it is NONE of your business…..
…and I just realised I didn’t say in all that, “thanx for the heads up”. (actually I’m sure I did, but I guess I edited it out along with something else) 🙁
You are more than welcome…..we all can use all the help we can get to attract readers…..
