Weekly Standard–End Of Days

The title does not imply that this will be some sort of religious rant…..have NO fear I leave those commentaries to those that feel it necessary to share……this post is about the impending doom of a pillar of neo-conservatism….the Weekly Standard.

Political magazines depend on the largesse of motivated patrons for their survival. When the patrons lose interest—or run short on cash—the magazines expire unless other moneybags can be located to cover the losses. Following that eternal script, the Weekly Standard appears close to folding because its current patron—and most important reader—billionaire conservative Philip Anschutz, has grown tired of it. He better favors his other conservative political publication, the Washington Examiner, which his company announced plans on Monday to “expand into a national distributed magazine with a broadened editorial focus.” In other words, the Standard is dying so the Examiner can live larger.

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/12/06/weekly-standard-never-trump-magazine-222766

Since 1995 the Weekly Standard has been a driving force of neo-conservative thought…..from the mind of Bill Kristol sprang a magazine that became a go to source for just about everything neocon……Neocon?…….but just what is a Neocon?

It appears that the magazine that help spread misinformation about Iraq to help make the case for the invasion and occupation and a driving force in the opposition to Iran….is looking like it is dead in the water……

The rumored demise of the Weekly Standard is yet another of Donald J. Trump’s achievements that will go uncelebrated by his liberal enemies: indeed, they are even now mourning the death of the neoconservative flagship as they never did when it was at the height of its maleficent glory.

And of course neoconservatism’s many fellow-travelers are out there with panegyrics. It “stood up for conservative principle” in the age of Trump, writes Meghan McArdle. What principle this might be, Ms. McArdle somehow neglects to say: perhaps it’s a penchant for perpetual war, the only known characteristic this famously eccentric and variable band hold in common. Both McArdle and the editors of the Standard thrilled their readers with stories of the great danger posed by Saddam Hussein, who they told us had nukes hidden beneath his palace ready to launch at a moment’s notice.

Let’s take a look at the three important roles played by the Standard and its editors in the history of the post-9/11 era.

https://original.antiwar.com/justin/2018/12/09/the-end-of-the-weekly-standard/

Could this be the death of the rabid neocon philosophy?

I think not….maybe a rebrand….but these warmongering toads will be with us….for now.

Trump’s News Network Or Reality Show?

A bit cooler weather and a joy to sit in the porch and watch the world go by…….weekends are my “down” time….time to enjoy my family and time to do something other than research……I smell coffee!

It is a Saturday morning and I am enjoying a cup of fine Colombian coffee……while I decide the direction of my day….let’s take a look, a tongue in cheek look, at the possibility of a Trump TV Network…..

I wrote a post awhile back about this possibility and……well Hell read it for yourself and save me the typing……

Source: “Trump News Network” – In Saner Thought

That done I saw an extension of this idea…..in the magazine GQ…..I do not read this rag because it is pretty much dedicated to the ego of men and their lifestyle choices….but the article I reference was pretty humorous…..

Try not to think of Election Day as the end of Donald Trump’s presidential fantasies. That’s so sad! Instead, think of it as the beginning of Trump TV! It’s gonna be the BEST (worst) network. Millions (hundreds) will watch it. Every cable provider (one in Montana) will carry it. Prepare your eyeballs for luxury with a sneak peek at what we assume will be the launch lineup for Trump TV.

Source: Inside Trump TV, Donald Trump’s Network | GQ

If this were to become reality (pun not intended) then it could give new life to some of the wackos that are not so popular these days…..like Sarah Palin, the pedophile Ted Nugent, other such “stars”……and Glen Beck will pout.

Trump is always looking for ways to keep his mug i front of the American people and I cannot think of a better way to do so than a TV network……if so hp[efully he will be better at it than Palin who sucks on air.

Watch this spot for further developments……

Enough already…..go now enjoy the weekend and the cooler temps, my friends……

That Was The Week That Was–05-11 May 2013

In case you live in a vacuum or an experiment like Schrodinger’s cat ………..

I get all kinds of emails and this one is one of the best….10 things idiots did last week….from Think Progress War Room….

10 Crazy Things the Right Did This Week

Another week, another 10 helpings of crazy brought to by the right wing.

  1. Heritage Foundation puts out shoddy report claiming immigrants are takers not makers, conservatives pounce. In a remarkable display this week, the Heritage Foundation put out a study claiming that immigration reform will cost $6.3 TRILLION over the next ten years (Ed. note: it won’t). Immediately, conservatives like Grover Norquist and groups like the American Enterprise Institute and Cato stepped up to trash the report.
  2. Heritage Foundation report co-written by racist who has previously written for white nationalist websites. The co-author of the aforementioned report, Jason Richwine, wrote his PhD dissertation about how racial minorities like Hispanics have inherently lower IQs. In addition to these obviously racist views, he also wrote for a white nationalist website and appeared at a conference alongside a well-known white nationalist. Richwine resigned from Heritage late Friday afternoon.  More to come tomorrow!
  3. Senator proposes ‘Downton Abbey amendment’ to immigration reform bill. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is an avowed enemy of immigration reform including a pathway to earned citizenship, but he appears to have found some jobs he approves of undocumented immigrants being allowed to have: domestic workers. Lee proposed an amendment to allow undocumented immigrants to be hired, but only as domestic workers, specifically including cooks, waiters, butlers, governessess, maids, valets, gardeners, footmen, grooms, and chauffeurs.
  4. Shadowy conservative group cuts ad featuring New Hampshire moms, except the moms turn out to be GOP activists. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) has seen her standing with Granite Staters plummet since she voted against expanded background checks. AnIowa-based secret money group rode the rescue this week with an ad backing Ayotte that purported to show regular moms supporting her. It turns out these regular moms were actually regular GOP activists.
  5. House GOP stages Benghazi hearing, learns nothing new. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) continued the GOP’s Benghazi witch hunt this week with a dramatic hearing. After the hearing, however, Issa admitted that the only thing we learned is that it was a terrorist attack — something President Obama acknowledged in the Rose Garden the day after the attack happened. In other words, we didn’t learn anything new at all as a result of the hearing. In fact, many of the GOP’s star witnesses actually debunked various right-wing conspiracy theories.
  6. GOP senate nominee claimed a $281,500 deduction that the IRS has referred to as a “tax scam.” Massachusetts GOP senate nominee Gabriel Gomez made an agreement with a local conservation association not to alter the facade of his historic home, something which earned him a $281,500 tax deduction. It turns out that he was already legally barred from making any changes. The IRS and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) have both highlighted this practice as an egregious “tax scam.”
  7. Tea Party activist calls for armed march on Washington, D.C. A Tea Party radio host called for protesters carrying loaded rifles to cross into the District of Columbia, which has very strict gun laws, from Virginia. After the police indicated they would meet the gun-toting protesters at the D.C. line, the host then called for mass lawbreaking in addition to the armed gun march.
  8. GOP demands budget process then prevents said process from happening. For the past few years, the GOP has demanded that the Democratic-controlled Senate pass a budget and then confer with the House under the “regular order.” Democrats passed a budget in March, but now Senate Republicans are blocking Senate Democrats from starting an official conference committee with the House, since that would expose the GOP’s unwillingness to compromise. “I think for us to after four years of complaining about Harry Reid’s failure to bring up a budget and then we do one and block conference is something that’s incomprehensible,” said Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
  9. Fox News brings on convicted cover-up expert to discuss alleged Benghazi cover-up. Following the aforementioned House GOP hearing on Benghazi, Fox News brought on Oliver North to discuss the alleged cover up. North himself was of course actually convicted of participating in the Iran-Contra cover-up.
  10. NRA makes some suspicious suggestions. At their national conference last weekend, the NRA suggested that parents store their firearms in their children’s rooms (in case of a home invasion). And the NRA’s youth magazine suggested that children build their own indoor, at-home shooting ranges.

Just thought I would keep everyone up to date on the happenings from the Right…..I will keep doing this every Monday as long as my readers appreciate it…….let me whatcha think.

O’Donnell Tears Into WH Press Corps: They Think ‘Their Questions Are More Important Than The President’s Answer’ | Mediaite

My readers know that I have little respect for the MSM, the corporate media……I think press conferences and interviews are worthless because all it is is a chance to echo talking points without answering questions….O’Donnell tore into the media recently…I could not agree more…….

The Future Of Cable

As Monty Python use to say, “and now for something completely different”…….

We know that newspapers and magazines, well all print, is a dying breed and they are trying desperately trying to save it…..and now to me, it looks like cable may be sliding into oblivion…….you can watch TV, movies, music, etc on your pad or phone or even your TV in the living room…….so is cable capable of surviving?

Cable TV is “on the fast train to oblivion,” but you won’t hear that from its executives. The latest financial results from Time Warner and News Corp are upbeat, and Comcast has decided to snap up the rest of NBCUniversal ahead of schedule. But the disastrous future for these companies is “emperor’s-no-clothes obvious,” writes Michael Wolff at USA Today. The bigwigs pretend that people aren’t “cord-cutting,” but the reality is that “virtually everybody has cut it or is flirting with the possibility of cutting it or being harangued by their children to do so.” At the heart of the problem is “modern business myopia.” Cable TV is deeply entrenched across the US, and for the moment, is still raking in cash—even as viewing habits have fundamentally changed. “My large television is a fully connected but dead presence in the house where a river of video, legal and not, flows over my laptop,” Wolff notes. All that’s left is for people to finally get around to dropping their cable service. Until then, expect the executives to remain in denial, following in the footsteps of Detroit, the music industry, and the newspaper business. Click to read Wolff’s full piece.

It looks like broadband is getting more and more popular and could in the near future replace the need for a cable subscription……look for cable companies to begin scrambling for government support as their popularity wanes………any thoughts?

Media And ‘Moral Panic’

College of Political Knowledge

A Side Note:  This post is my 5000th post…..I guess that would explain the restless nights, headaches and my fingers becoming more tired and a lot more stubby…..I would like to thank my friends, followers and readers for making my blog a joy.

Anyone that reads this blog will know that I do not care for the MSM so much……I will NEVER be a popular blog because I refuse to pile on the crap and sink to the level of  insulting the opposition with every opportunity (I have had occasion when I thought someone was speaking out their butt and call them on it and sometimes very uncomplimentary)  to me they are just another problem that has NO solution…….take for instance in the recent weeks….we have had a woman that testifies and becomes a story…..we have a teenager that is shot and killed…..and most recently we have a comment about stay at home Moms…..all three and not the only ones just the most recent have become reports that have driven the political debate….all three have turned into media gold.

These types of situations are what is known as a “moral panic”.

Moral panics are in essence controversies that involve arguments and social tension and in which disagreement is difficult because the matter at its center is taboo.   The media have long operated as agents of moral indignation, even when they are not self-consciously engaged in crusading or muckraking. Simply reporting the facts can be enough to generate concern, anxiety or panic.  (Thanx to Wikipedia)

Moral panics can be identified by these characteristics:

Moral panics have several distinct features. According to Goode and Ben-Yehuda, moral panic consists of the following characteristics:

  • Concern – There must be awareness that the behaviour of the group or category in question is likely to have a negative impact on society.
  • Hostility – Hostility towards the group in question increases, and they become “folk devils”.   A clear division forms between “them” and “us”.
  • Consensus – Though concern does not have to be nationwide, there must be widespread acceptance that the group in question poses a very real threat to society.   It is important at this stage that the “moral entrepreneurs” are vocal and the “folk devils” appear weak and disorganised.
  • Disproportionality – The action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat posed by the accused group.
  • Volatility – Moral panics are highly volatile and tend to disappear as quickly as they appeared due to a wane in public interest or news reports changing to another topic.

Moral panics occur when the media concentrates on any given problem which is then exaggerated and blown out of all proportion.  The perceived problem is depicted as being typical of a wider social disease which if unchecked will threaten our social tranquility.  Normally it involves groups that are being targeted and scapegoated and blamed for all the ills in our society.

Now think back for the last couple of weeks…..we have had a woman being called a slut and women being ostracized as a group….we have had a teenager shot and the case was already tried in the media with the help of the media….and finally, a comment made by a pundit about work and women and it has turned into a major story as well as a campaign pitch by a candidate…..these three are examples of a moral panic generated by the media….I am speaking about all the media one ideology does not have a high ground in this situation.

Let’s look at a recent situation, the most recent moral panic….a comment was made that a woman has never worked a day in her life……the story became that a stay at home Mom does not work…..this is a false but effective attack…..everyone who heard that comment knew what the pundit was saying……the media took semantics and ran with it……(please before the insults begin…I am NOT saying that being a Mother is not hard work…it is) I am only illustrating how one simple word can be turned into an effective “moral panic”.

Another illustration is the dog stories from the last week or so……the media was fixated on this instead of doing reports on the 6th anniversary of Romneycare in Mass….since the repeal of Obamacare is a priority for the GOP you would think that the model used would be a little more important than an old dog story or what breed was on the menu……

………Again a “moral panic”!

In Case You Were Napping

Since we have a few days before the next media circus that is the New Hampshire primary…….

While you were celebrating the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012…..our prez, Obama, signed into law NDAA……the so-called “detention” law that would give the government free reign to detain protesters as somehow “terrorists”…..with that done all eyes are turning to SOPA, the anti-piracy act…..which could be the end of bloggers like myself and Red State’s Erickson and many many others…..since Obama had NO problem signing NDAA….what are the chances that he will sign the SOPA?

But why would Obama sign such a bill and such an attack on the free speech part of the Constitution?  A good question and here could be the answers that we look for…..

From the website, TwitLonger……….

This list shows who supports #SOPA and who is publicly against it… #StopSOPA #ReTweet

Now take a look….a hard look…..at those in favor of the measure……(pause for reflection)……now you have your answer as to why the US Congress supports it…….MONEY!  RE-ELECTION!

A Very Successful Con Job

I always like to hear about a good con job, especially political ones….you know like the con job that tax cuts will create jobs and increase revenue…..or that national health care will create death panels….just to mention a few….I recently saw a report that leads me to believe there has been a ten year successful con job perpetuated on the American people….

Since the attack on 9/11, a day we observe as Patriots Day….today….has started a deluge of misinformation by a number of sources to foment hatred of Muslims….if you have watched any news organizations shows then you will recall at least one such report of the creeping sharia law or some such …….

But a recent report from the Center for American Progress,  has shed a little more light on what is really going on….with the help of “think tanks” and so-called “experts” the American people have been bombarded with tons of misinformation…..

The 130-page report, ‘Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America’, identifies seven foundations that have quietly provided a total of more than 42 million dollars to key individuals and organisations that have spearheaded the nation-wide effort between 2001 and 2009.The network also includes what the report calls “misinformation experts” – including Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy (CSP), Daniel Pipes of the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum (MEF), Steven Emerson of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, David Yerushalmi of the Society of Americans for National Existence, and Robert Spencer of Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) – who are often tapped by television news networks and right-wing radio talk shows to comment on Islam and the threat it allegedly poses to U.S. national security.

“This small band of radical ideologues has fought to define Sharia as a ‘totalitarian ideology’ and legal- political-military doctrine committed to destroying Western civilization,” the report said. “But a scholar of Islam and Muslim tradition would not recognise their definition of Sharia, let alone a lay practicing Muslim.”

Nonetheless, the group’s messages receive wide dissemination by what the report calls an “Islamophobia echo chamber” consisting of leaders of the Christian Right, such as Franklin Graham and Pat Robertson, and some Republican politicians, such as presidential candidates Representative Michele Bachmann and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich.

This report was released on August 26, 2011 and was NOT covered by any media….I guess we could blame Irene for the lack of attention and by the time the hurricane had run its course…..the report was not considered newsworthy…..

I read the report and just wanted people to know that NOT everything you hear about Muslims is the truth….that some have this desire to have Americans hate someone or something……even if those they hate are Americans….and that my friends…is the truly sad part!

The Media As A Referee?

(Let me finish laughing…it hurts so bad)……NO!  A thousand times NO!  To say the media….ALL the media….were just reporting the facts to the American people is in NO small way delusional……I, as well as many of us on the so-called Left, have said that the media is nothing more than op-ed TV….that is why most of the people that I know that want the facts and only the facts go to….BBC News or Reuters et al…….but to my point….the whole debt deal that was played endlessly in the American media showed just how silly the media was in its handling of the ginned up “crisis”……yes, I will continue to bitch about this subject!

For instance…….this from a much respected news man Tom Brokaw……

Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press :

This is not just a Democratic problem or a Republican problem, the whole country was in on this to get us to this stage. Now, we’re in a huge spending binge in this country. Everybody was along for the ride for a long, long time. President Bush started a war on a credit card. It’s been going on for 10 years. We have prescription drug benefits for the seniors that are not paid for. SEC wasn’t looking at what was happening on Wall Street. Democrats were pushing house ownership for people who didn’t really deserve and shouldn’t be buying houses. At the same time, they were not willing to step up on reforming Medicare and on Medicaid and Social Security. The country itself, they were spending money like crazy, and they were—they’d gotten used to having Washington take care of whatever they needed.

That seems to be the common narrative on this pile of bovine fecal matter……Joe Rosen has a different view about what Brokaw and others are reporting…….

This is what the majority of our journalists believe about the debt crisis. It was created by both sides. It will have to be resolved by both sides. The American people are hugely to blame, as well. The division of responsibility is thus miraculously equal: one third to the Democrats, one third to the Republicans, one third to the public. No distinctions between the parties are tenable. It’s 50-50 all the way down. Symmetrical. Equal and opposite. Neat and clean. Exquisitely balanced.

To the press? Zero responsibility.

This is what a majority of our political journalists believe. Therefore, they should go to war for this interpretation. They should own it. For it is theirs.

[…]

They should drop the fiction of themselves as chroniclers, referees and interlocutors and get down in the muck with the rest of us. Here’s what we think and goddamnit we think we’re right!

The media continues to pretend that they some how speak for all of us….that is CRAP!  Bloggers are more in tuned than the press will ever be…..the press likes to identify us bloggers as people who sit around in our mother’s basement eating Cheetos and typing…….their arrogance is why they are JOKES!  Most political bloggers are very astute observers of the subject they write about….I am NOT talking about those people that spend all their effort calling names and insulting anyone who does not agree with them…..but for the media to try and paint bloggers as some whacked out nerd sitting around in the underwear is just petty jealousy and arrogance.

Are We A Country Of Legal Rights?

Daily Agitator

I am sure that this will get some people’s dander up….but keep in mind that I am NOT making a call on guilt or innocence…….

I was not gonna post anymore on the Anthony trial but since the media has turned this into a three ring circus….I feel I must!

We Americans are proud of our country especially because of our rights and freedoms, at least that is what we are told to be proud of daily, but (there seems to to always a but) there are times that I have a hard time understanding the thinking…..Americans are an emotional people, and at times act in a contrary way than what the Constitution and such say…….

By now everyone with hearing knows that Casey Anthony was been found not guilty of murder….my most appreciative thing about the trial was listening to Nancy Grace self destruct and her head explode at the verdict, that aside….I do not post too often on gossipy crap but this time I will make an exception……

People are all over the media saying what a travesty of justice has been done……of course these are all personal opinions….but look at from a legal point of view and leave the media induced emotionalism behind……the prosecution did not prove its case beyond a shadow of doubt…..is that not what our laws say…..innocent until proven guilty?  The prosecution did not prove its case on her guilt.  That should be enough for the citizens, but instead the media has turned this into a circus for the sake of ratings…..I am not voicing my opinion on whether she is guilty or not, my opinion is just that MINE, I am however saying that because were are a nation of laws and procedures and after a trial of her peers she was found to be not guilty and that should be enough for the people….the system worked the way it was designed to work…..

All the hysteria and emotions that have been poured out by the people is disgusting…….there have even been death threats and physical harm threats against the people on the jury because they did NOT find this person guilty……they did not act the way that the media wanted and so now we have every nut job being trotte3d out to a mic so we can hear what the media wants us to hear….this is unacceptable….if these dirt bags want to harm someone then go after the prosecution, because they did not make their case…..but leave the people on the jury alone…..

And why do all these people think Anthony is guilty?  Basically, because the media made the case against her few of the hysterical people were in the courtroom to hear the evidence so they are talking smack brought on by the media……

Like I said earlier, I am NOT making a judgment on the verdict or the guilt of the person…I am speaking from a purely analytical point of view…..my biggest bitch is that the media has the power to convict a person even before a trial and then has the power to question the verdict to the point that Americans go bat shit crazy and will possibly break the law…if so, where does that serve the public’s best interests?
